When this version became the mega hit in the 60’s, it really resonated because of all the soldiers leaving for Vietnam, many never came back. Young men fighting and dying while longing for their loved ones….. No matter who covers it, they can never convey the feelings, the gravitas to the song. Bobby’s voice and delivery were perfect for all those emotions of humanity.

It's so nice to see you get back to these two performers from my era and hope to see you eventually get into their more lively R&B performances where their energy and humor shine. In truth, both these great singers knew that the melody of this iconic song better fit Bobby Hatfield's tone and range. In an interview with them Bobby shared that he sang this song with his original group The Variations and said "I had that one in my pocket".

I have long thought that music is one of the most powerful forces in the world. It has brought people together to support causes, inspired patriotism, feel spirituality more deeply, feel love more strongly, heal aching hearts or break hearts and so on. I have been playing guitar for over 50 years and I am thankful for the gift of music every time I play. There is certainly no shame in being moved by a good song; it happens to me daily.
One thing that helped with the mood with this song that the other versions don't have, and that's the classical orchestra backing Bobby up, starting soft and gentle with the strings and ending with the trumpets. Outstanding and incomparable performance.

Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley had agreed that each would sing a solo on an album. ‘As the story goes’, both men wanted to sing this song and Bobby Hatfield won the coin toss! Although the song has been covered literally hundreds of times, with Elvis’ version darn good... Bobby Hatfield’s version is definitely the gold standard! Bobby Hatfield was notoriously nervous before performing before large audiences, even more so on live TV. His nervousness was even more elevated for this 1965 performance because his mother was in the audience - for her first time to watch her son perform live on national TV. While his nervousness was apparent during the dialogue with Andy Williams prior to the song, Bobby immediately settled into his "zone" when he started singing.

Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley had agreed that each would sing a solo on an album. ‘As the story goes’, both men wanted to sing this song and Bobby Hatfield won the coin toss! Although the song has been covered literally hundreds of times, with Elvis’ version darn good... Bobby Hatfield’s version is definitely the gold standard!
Bobby Hatfield was notoriously nervous before performing before large audiences, even more so on live TV. His nervousness was even more elevated for this 1965 performance because his mother was in the audience - for her first time to watch her son perform live on national TV. While his nervousness was apparent during the dialogue with Andy Williams prior to the song, Bobby immediately settled into his "zone" when he started singing.
I was in high school when the Righteous Brothers came out in 1964. I watched Bobby sing this song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. He owns this song. No one sang it better than he did. No auto tunes, just pure raw talent. RIP Bobby! We miss hearing your beautiful voice! ❤🙏
