We were married in 1964 . I was 19 and she was 18 . We had 4 kids before I was 25 . I worked 2 full time jobs to support the family for many years and my wife was home with the kids .We have been together for 60 years .We were both more or less orphans . I had left home and been on my own since I was 15 and my wife grew up in orphanages and foster homes . We had NO help from family .

It sounds like the beginning of your lives were hell and you deserved each other, and the good Lord brought you together. I really love seeing an older couple that have been together forever. It warms my heart and gives me hope - right before I get saddened over my own life and how I destroyed my marriage. But then you, sir, give me hope right back. Hope for humanity at least. God bless you both.

I have always described the Righteous Brothers as “Thunder and Lightening”. Billy Medley’s Thunderous voice, then Bobby Hatfield comes in with the lightening, then when they sing it is a perfect storm you just are in awe of.

You are absolutely right. The 60's were just an extension of the 50s...very much the same. Simple, lovely times. It was in the 70s when everything exploded and went sideways. 🫤
What a wonderful reaction. Sent me back! Thank you so much!

    • @JohnH.Sturgis

Really? By the middle and end of the '60s, the collapse into self-centeredness was well under way.

    • @jackiec859
      @jackiec859 5 месяцев назад

Not everyone felt that the 50's & 60's were simple, lovely times. The 50's were a bit rigid (the Cold War coupled with McCarthyism, air raid drills) and openly racist; the 60's was full of social issues that *HAD* to be addressed. And then, the assassinations, the Vietnam War...I don't recall the 60's as being 'simple'. I had a *great* Motown kidhood, but I read the city newspapers, relied on Walter Cronkite and my parents who didn't sugarcoat reality.
Not everyone lived that "Leave It To Beaver" life.

The 60's, epecially mid to late 60's, changed everything in society in the US. War protests, marches, college campus occupations, hot cars, hot pants, The Pill, new kinds of music, TV and movies, women's rights, racial equality, hippies, flower power, LSD, communes, the Apollo moon program. I could go on and on. I was in high school and college during this turbulent but amazing time in our history and it was exciting to witnness the monumentral changes that were taking place, both good and bad, but mostly good.

This was our song when I fell in love with my ex-husband. Unfortunately, the marriage didn't work out. We had 3 children, and I ended up supporting them as single parent without child support. I worked 3 jobs to keep a roof over us, plus I took classes at night to get my bachelors degree in accounting. He failed us so badly. He's decreased due to his alcoholism and drug addiction. I hope he is resting in peace. I'm remarried to a wonderful man who has given me a beautiful life. I was blessed! ❤❤❤

I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s ….. most people did not have two cars and the other material things that are so expensive….larger houses, cable, cell phones, etc. The expectations of today’s youth are much greater in material goods than in the 60’s. It doesn’t help that education costs have exploded and inflation is high.

I had the best of all worlds. My father was in the Air Force and my mother was a homemaker most of the time. She enjoyed making the house her own little palace and she was always sharply dressed in nice casual clothes like Capri Pants and a blouse or a shirtwaist dress. A couple nights a week she and friends would go out while we helped Dad cook a week's worth of spaghetti sauce and bake a Boston Cream Pie. It was a typical 60s family much like you saw on the old TV shows. The family had favorite TV shows which included Shindig where the Righteous Brothers were regulars and the parents enjoyed Glen Campbell, another regular. Great times!

1966 - way long before auto tune existed. Live performance and no computer-aids available either. Just pure talent. I'm telling you, that back in the day us ladies absolutely loved this song/lyrics and longed for a man to say those same words to us. Individually - superb voices/pitch perfect with amazing tone qualities - together their harmony is beautifully matched: Bill's baritone and Bobby's 3-octave tenor.

I feel bad for kids today having fake music generated by computer to listen to thinking that stuff is good when it's garbage. There are exceptions.

These times were simpler in many ways. There is nothing wrong with a woman wanting to stay home to take care of their children and the home, just as their is nothing wrong with a woman wanting to have a career of her own. The real problem is that couples today often have to both work, sometimes at more than one job just to barely scrap by. Corporate greed has taken over, and prices of everything have skyrocketed while politicians who are in league with the super rich and large corporations keep wages low to keep lower and middle-class families who were the workforce that built everything down while a few of the wealthiest prosper. The division between the wealthy and the poor continues to widen as the lifestyles and values of older, simpler times become a distant memory.

In the 60s, housing, food, and medical care took a much smaller bite out of your paycheck, so it was still possible for one breadwinner to provide for the family. However, it did depend upon your economic class. I many cases the wife had to supplement the income working either part or full time. I love this song, and I love Bill Medley, the baritone, who is still singing today! Thank you!

I would simply say, not all women had a "choice" to make their own decision to stay home and to not work. I remember my mother being told by my father that he expected her to hand over her paycheck each week, so that he could pay the bills. And she was not allowed to have a bank account...because she was a woman. So, everything was not so "simple" in the 50's and 60's and some would say not a good time to be a woman without rights. But they did produce some amazing music. (Not meant as a criticism rather just another point of view) 🙏

Actually they were in a doowop group the Paramours for a few yrs before being a duo.Im a senior my mom never worked took great care of the home plus great meals everyday. Back then more women stayed home than worked, 50s & 60s. Women's lib started changing that starting mid to late 60s.

Many American families *in the 60's* had the father as *the* breadwinner. But there were lots of families that, like now, couldn't survive on just one income. *Mom AND Dad* both had jobs, and dad may have had a 2nd job. The word 'choice' went out the window. Also, *pay inequality was the norm (race, gender, age, religion).*
Don't get it twisted, moms worked at home taking care of the kids, the cooking, cleaning, laundry, some household repairs...she just didn't get paid for it. *Some people* didn't count that as a job because no money changed hands.

    • @MerchantOfAlba

As a mother myself, i fully understand that taking care of a house and your kids is a hard responsible job. And also understand about choice or lack of it. I didn't have a choice in whether I'll stay home or go to work. Had to do both, and it was really hard at times. I guess every decade has its ups and downs. Warm greetings from Romania 💚

The difference in the home life style in the 50s and say the 70's was birth control. Before 1965, it wasn't as practical for a woman to invest a great deal of time in a career when she was likely going to end up staying home and raising several children.
