Hard to think of anythnig to say about this song that isn't super obvious. It's a great, serious song delivered from a very feeling place. It sounds like a memorial.
I'm sure that the first line "These mist covered mountains are home now for me" is a reference to an old Scottish song "The mist covered mountains of home" which was written in the 19th century and is often played on the bagpipes at funerals (it was played at Queen Elizabeth's state funeral in 2022). As an aside, Mark Knopfler's uncle was a piper in the British army.
Wow this video is a day old? I just watched you react to the Rock Lobster. This song, it never fails to make me cry really. My friend told me he liked it, and he never really opens up, we were shitfaced of course. And we live very far apart now, we moved away to study. And I sort of get sippy at this song because of my good friend.
A tribute to the soldiers who died in the horrible days of World War 1. The conditions were unimaginable. The terrible death from inhaling chemical weapons such as Mustard gas and risen that was dropped on the men while in the trenches. All war is terrible, sometimes necessary, and has always been with us in this world. Mark Knopfler's brilliantly haunting remembrance of these poor men.
It was written in 1982, the year that the UK and Argentina fought the Falklands War. So while you can apply it to WW1, it would have been inspired by that conflict.
@@willowvons Well that certainly isn't true. Music may have expressed opposition to the Vietnam War but it didn't stop it. It was the likes of scenes of young American men dying that was appearing on the nightly news and protest marches by people of all ages that played a significant role. The Tet Offensive, though effectively a military failure for the Viet Cong, was massive psychological blow to the American populous who had already been doubting the point of the war.
I'm gonna check out your reaction, but sometime (just for you) watch the official video, when listening to this. It's absolutely created for the imagery and the music to meld perfectly together. It'll add an entirely new dimension to the song for you.

A powerful song.

Their masterpiece!!!
I cry each time.
As already stated, the official video adds so much to this tract. Powerful images.
One of the most beautiful songs ever. Thank you. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
You cannot hear this and not be affected, yet , the powerful continue the carnage.
Good luck to all of us, we may need it.
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
It was released in 1985 but was written in 1982 at the time of the Falklands War.
There are some live versions that are well worth checking out, too.

Mark wrote this about the Falklands war, not WW1
Really good, bro 👍🏼
Only one war has been stopped by the people of our country, and we did it with music.
Which war was that?
@@edwardlongshanks827 The Vietnam war.

If you haven't done it - then you MUST MUST MUST react to Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Live).

You looked a bit tired or distracted before it began. Glad that changed.
