Thank you for making a video with a scientific angle. For transparency, I am someone who holds what I describe as subconscious transphobic views. When I see a trans person online or in person (rare as it may be), I always have some sort of negative knee jerk reaction. I’m still a bit young, but I’d like to change it as soon as possible so that I don’t hold any feelings of hate towards anyone, no matter their gender, sexuality, race, politics, etc. There’s a distinct lack of videos or pieces on the internet that could help someone like me change their views about trans people, and I’d definitely like to find more. You are making the world a lot better for not only people who want to change and be more accepting (like me), but also for transgender people. I hope my journey to better compassion succeeds. Peace and love, god is good. 🫶🏻
Sometimes you just can't help it. I have some innate negative reaction to a certain race. I have reasons for it but that doesn't mean I'm unfairly judging people from their race. I just make the concious effort to to take a second look instead of going with my gut when I can. I don't consider myself racist because it's not hate, and I do try to remedy it.

As a young child growing up in the 1960s I was subjected to surgery for a undescended testis. During the surgery something was found that indicated that I had failed to fully develop as a male child, in other words I had an intersex sexual development. Keep in mind as a very young child I had already figured this out. I remember as a even young child thinking about being a mother with a child growing inside of me. Back in those days people never spoke of such things, there were boys and girls and nothing else. Yet I knew this to be true for me or at least in part I was female. The surgery was hard but I recovered and went about my life. In time I did marry and lived as a male but living as a male was hard. Think goodness my spouse work around my sexual issues caused by this intersex body of mine. But to tell you the truth gender dysphoria was hard to deal with. One of my testis did work a little and surprising we managed to have two children. It took a great deal of time and effort but we managed. I was a great father and mother at the same time. A few years after our daughter was born I developed a form of testicular cancer that was infact based on obtain cancer. In fact I carry the gene for breast and ovarian related cancer. I also have been treated for gender dysphoria. I’ve not been able to transition to living as a women because I carry this gene and taking estrogen would cause my cancer to return if I took it. During my treatments for cancer I had extensive surgeries where germ cell teratoma were found in my body. One was malignant but the rest were not. One teratoma was particularly huge and was very well developed. In fact it had many of the elements of a fetus. It had limbs, flesh, eyes, bones etc,. When I woke up after surgery at the Mayo Clinic I remember crying because somehow I knew I had lost my child. Of course I had not but this teratoma had been residing in me so long that the many hormones being released left me with the feelings that I was indeed pregnant. I’m still happily married and live each day with one foot in each gender world. My wife loves us both.
I know I'm jumping to the end of this video by mentioning this but back when I worked in a psychiatric unit we had a few transgender patients come in. They all came in for the same reason, they were diagnosed with clinical depression right after their family kicked them out
I dont think you can be clinically depressed just after your family kicks you out. Usually theres alot going on before hand which led to that. But usually people don't say.
@@af98 Well let's be honest here, when someone transitions, it's not a one-day process. It's usually something that happens over time. I'm sure there was more going on prior to getting kicked out. Perhaps there were some family members that were cruel, maybe they were constantly putting down the person. Also one of my trans patients was a veteran that was in active combat, she fought in Iraq as a man but upon returning home decided she no longer wants to live as a man and began her transition. Though she checked in after her family disowned her, I'm sure there was quite a bit building prior to her admission
@@carissapignatelli you don’t become clinically depressed from being kicked out. It’s just the fact they decided to get diagnosed. Clinical depression is diagnosable through serotonin and dopamine levels, and you’re saying being kicked out of a socially constructed house will cause a genetic change in someone ? Literally there are individuals who are kicked out of their houses all over the world due to environment and other social issues, but they do not acquire suicidal depression You must have failed schooling
That is very wholesome. I wish I could say I'm cisgender but I'm not. It's ok though. One day I'll forget that I was ever a male stuck inside the wrong body
I know you guys are very socially and politically left, so I congratulate you on an honest and fairly unbiased and and unpolitical look at the issue, focusing on the science rather than the falsehoods and propaganda from either political camp
They did pretty good, but don't give them too much credit. They still said "assigned male at birth" and didn't provide facts when comparing the suicide rates before transition and after transition.
+Dr. Apple Assigning a gender to someone is exactly what we do, considering you don't know if that person is trans and transitions later. Your own son could be trans and you wouldn't know until he opens up to you. Would you still say he was born a male?
This video was heavily biased. Its terminology clouds the facts around many of their own issues and they outright ignore many facts. EX: How correlated where those genes and transgenderism? The link is obviously there, why are they clouding it? They state how environmental influences like rejection from family and workplace harassment can increase suicidality in the transgender community, but completely ignores that it's only a slight increase in suicidality and that all transgender people, even those who don't report such problems and "pass" only have a slightly lower risk of attempted suicide compared to those that experience rejection and harassment. It ignores data that doesn't favor them and only presents more clouded data that does. That's basically the definition of a bias. It does it to the point of being a disservice to the transgender community. The problems exist, how is ignoring them helping?
Ik theres still people commenting on this post and I just wanted to say this: "Who cares?". There's so much hate in this world already. War, famine, hunger, and economic collapse. In my opinion it's stupid to hate on trans people when we could be putting that energy and time into things that benefit society. I do agree that the science of it in this video is outdated, I get that, but that doesn't mean that there isn't science in being trans. There's a lot we don't know but what we know for sure is that it cannot be changed or "fixed". Conversion therapy has been proven to actually be very harmful and inefficient. What I'm trying to say is that trans people won't go anywhere so as a society we should just move on because the hate doesn't benefit anyone.
@JaneChristensen. In contradicts the claims that trans brains match their preferred identity. Transmen were much closer to ciswomen than to cismen is pretty much every metric. So that study shows that transmen are neurologically much closer to women than to men. Transwomen are more varied, sometimes being closer to women, sometimes being closer to men. What it _is_ notable is that transwomen are reduced on _every_ scale compared to cismen. Even on those scales where women are normally higher (such as Splenium of the CC and L ILF). That is, in those cases, the transwomen are _even further_ from being women than men normally are. This reduction in activity in those areas is far more easily explained by childhood trauma, which would show such reduction in every area. It cannot be explained by claiming transwomen are neurologically woman as, if they were, then those areas should see an _increase_ not a decrease. One final point, in pretty much every single metric, transmen are closer to ciswomen than transwomen are. This directly contradicts the hypothesis that trans people are neurologically the gender they identify with as, if they were, the exact opposite would be true.

I really appreciate y’all coming at this with a scientific approach instead of a cultural one. And because it’s important to protect the core belief, they would rationalized, ignore and even deny anything that doesn’t fit in with the core belief.
+Heidymarleny2: Indeed and unfortunately for the creators of this video, there's this one thing that completely and utterly obliterates whatever they just said in this video ... called twins. You see twins have 100% identical DNA. If we go by the logic presented in this video, then every single twin pair where someone is trans, they both have to be trans 100% of the time or neither one are. This however, is just not the case since some of the twins are trans and majority of them are not. What science currently thinks about transgenderism; it's a post-birth mental disorder and has absolutely nothing to do with genetics or human biology in general. It's purely psychological. If you are looking for more actual science about this; ruclips.net/video/s57T27M1ZXk/видео.html
twins don't have 100% identical dna unless they are identical twins, and even then sometimes the development of both is different since environment does affect our growth. If the problem is not genetic (as in, no crossing over of genes from Y to X or vice versa occurred), it can be cured. I have seen two cases around me. But if it is genetic, there's not much you can do. P.S. Are you a scientist? a doctor? how can you make the false claims in the second paragraph? That's not true. Even if it was a mental disorder though, it doesn't negate the fact that everyone has the right to live their live however they want, even if it means changing your gender. Women grow hair in those places, so your dysphoria about that (and the increase in dysphoria after deciding you are trans) proves that it comes from a place of social indoctrination not anything inherent.

The more I do to feminise myself, the happier I feel.
@@martind2520 Well men grow a whole lot more... Its deeper than that though, as transwoman I am deeply aware of my nasculinity. I'm aware shaving my legs doesn't make me a woman, just as I'm aware that wearing woman clothes doesn't make me one. I feel like a woman, I feel like a woman whether I am masculine presenting or not. But by taking steps to feminise my appearance, makes me feel closer to being one. By taking steps to make my appearance more feminine, whether those are superficial or not, helps me to fit into the social role more. I can't really explain it more than that. Like it or not, the more masculine I present the more people see me as a man. So yes, I'm aware that women grow leg hair too but I'm also aware that women are more likely to shave their legs. It is about fitting into the social role of how I feel. It isn't really about the act of shaving my legs. If I were to wake up in a woman's body tomorrow, and put on masculine clothes, and not shave my legs. I'd still be in the right body. I'd be inclined to agree, that isn't normal by any means. The typical scenario is to give the child hormone blockers until they're 16 (this does NO harm whatsoever, only delays their 'natural' puberty until they're old enough and have known themselves long enough to truly make such an important decision) before starting them on HRT. In some cases though, like if someone has known they're a girl since they're 4 years old or even younger, and they're 12-13, imo, it's crueler to deny them HRT then than it is to allow it. They've known and lived as a girl for 8 years by that point, what more proof do you need, then?

I read many of them.. the science presented in this video doesn't describe gender identity with regards to biology but conditions like turners disease, kleinfelders syndrome and a mix of what historically was related to hermaphroditic conditions. Its not relating to transgendered people without chromosomal conditions. The post-mortem brain studies were not included here but are incapable of concluding their pre hormonal intervention brainstate, only can show the influences of hormones on the brain. The population sample is too low, not enough funding has been allocated so early results are not correlative bc the studies havent been repeated. The data does not conclude that transition helps reduce suicide by a significant factor to claim success. The studies vary but we talking about a reduction of as little to 0 to 10% when the initial chance is 40 to 50% lifetime attempt of suicide That is why this is serious business. The science isnt conclusive. No other oppressed group in history like blacks living under slave rule or Jews in concentration camps that have this high rate of suicidally. Therefore oppression and ur percieved oppression and treatment by others is not the cause.. the data cannot support that claim. Therefore it's more likely in the brain and we need to help these kids and adults. Ability to transition and reduction in bullying will not prevent these deaths. Helpful possibly, cures- no way. I hope science can isolate the biological cause related to the suicidality bc that should be the priority. It's not productive to vilinize and force others to agree with one persons perception of themselves or promote a costly and potentially biologically unhealthy transition as a cure. Taking hormones has been demonstrated to have adverse affects on health, causes terminal cancers and has many other long terms affects detrimental to health and doesnt stop suicides. Also genital mutilation is dangerous and had risks like any serious surgical procedure. Once it's done it's done and the transition regret is not discussed enough either. There is no definitive answers to the problems and it hurts my heart people are killing themselves and no one is presenting a solution with any real impact on the death rate. If I had a child , I would focus on teaching them to love themselves and teach them that what they like is not related to biology and dont let others tell u boys dont wear dresses and girls don't play sports. Those are the constructs.. Be you and love you bc I do. There are things we can change and things that we cant.. the wisdoms knowing the difference. But making conclusions based on the science presented here is fighting a battle of wits unarmed..not recommended
It's a shame how much of a political topic this has become, and this goes for both sides of the conversation. No matter if you're pro or anti trans and no matter how much you disagree with the other side, just don't hate and de-humanize the ones you disagree with. I think the trans topic really highlights how polarized everyone is becoming. People either completely embrace it or completely hate it (at least on the internet, which is not completely representative of our entire society, which is something important to keep in mind!).
I wouldn’t say I’m anti-trans. I’m more pro leaving the kids the F alone. I’ve never even met or seen a trans person in real life until this year. The person is in my daughters school in the 8th grade, and every time I see this person they look utterly miserable. I asked my daughter if the person had friends and she said yes, they had lots of friends. For some reason the kid still look completely miserable, hmmm. I thought they were supposed to be happy after transition. 🤔 they’re not being bullied and they have friends, I wonder what it could be.
You are right though, I think most people hate it, especially because it’s now shoved down the throats of children, who do it for attention, acceptance, to be unique or join some kind of club. Its like anorexia/bulimia of the decade, except you don’t get a second change with this one. really messed up.
Terrible doesn't begin to describe the agony and utter hell we endure for the sake of hiding and keeping everyone else comfortable. It actually gets to a point where it becomes so amazingly overwhelming that it breaks the mind and destroys a part of us. I counted over 400 "attacks" per day, each lasting minutes before I could shove it to the back of my mind. We can lose whole years in a haze of pain and regret. This breaking of the mind is an 8-year cycle (give or take). You'll find it extremely rare for people with regret to last more than 8 years. You'll also find many suicide attempts happen at about the same time. Depression, anxiety and isolation are at their peak. Worse yet, the 8-year cycle starts in childhood and each 8-year cycle is worse than the previous.

No one deserved to be condemned or belittled because of their sexual preferences, bodies, races, origins and nationalities. Only moral or immoral actions would be the only measurement that would attract, repel or irritate your surrounding people. Thank you for this enlightening video.
I've read probably 100's of comments and have a lot of opinions but what it should all boil down to is just treat everyone nicely. It's not that hard. Just because you don't understand why some one feels a certain way doesn't mean you can dictate how they live. Respect should be the main thing. And if it's religious I'm pretty sure there's something that goes along the line of 'treat others how you would like to be treated' and I guarantee no one wants to be constantly 'reminded' that they're going to hell. It's really not helpful.
I wish I could upvote this 100 times. Call people by their preferred name or pronoun - it doesn't invalidate your opinion and you're treating your fellow human being with the respect they deserve. Thanks
You're not trans, you are born as a gender, and you will stay with that. Stop bragging that you're trans for attention, because science says it can't be done
@Natalia Long geez perhaps thousands of years ago but I don't know if you can tell, there is no shortage of people. There will always be people to procreate anyways, it's not as though suddenly everyone will stop giving birth, so there should be nothing to worry about. Also, one's sexuality isn't something that can be changed so it doesn't even matter.
The fact that this video had to basically say "trans people feel bad when they are treated bad" at minute 3:33 just proves how much empathy we may be lacking as a culture.
I thought we'd learned off previous mistakes (that are still ongoing, just in a smaller quantity) like racism, but no. We haven't learned a single thing.

I love how many people in the comment section are saying that this video is "spreading ideology" when it is literally explaining the scientific process of development. Talking about the brain's structural differences, change in chromosomes, separate stages of development, and life experiences surveyed many many times. Also this video cites official sources such as the National Institute of Health and the American Psychology Association. This doesn't sound very ideological to me, sounds more scientific. You all are just afraid to accept the truth so you're trying to find some fault in the video but since there isn't any, it's laughably ridiculous because you're arguments have no basis, proven facts, or citations. If anyone sees this and says "Well YOU don't have any citations for YOUR comment!", my answer to y'all is that my source is this very video, which holds its sources in the description. Either accept the proven studies or continue to hang onto your disproven beliefs and make ridiculous comments that hold no basis.
@@pewmanfoibles7557 I've not heard the term "soft science" so I decided to look into it and it is quite interesting. Basically, unless I'm misunderstanding, it means any scientific process or concept that is not tangible, unlike hard science (more or less like software vs hardware). Physical structures of the brain will have impacts on how the soft sciences are portrayed by the individual, like how hardware in a computer will affect how software functions on the computer. A prime example of this would be lobotomies, which was a procedure where the prefrontal lobe is severed. The prefrontal lobe is the "leader" of the brain, responsible for your ability to make decisions for yourself. With that gone, you no longer have that ability.
There are scientific elements to this topic. However, the belief that a biological man who identifies as a woman IS an actual woman is entirely ideological. This specific conclusion is what people are referring to.
I appreciate how unbiased this video was. No pro this, or anti that, just science. Given all the controversy surrounding gender identity lately it’s nice to see scientific work is being on this

And I see already that one dude in the comment that respond to everyone saying this video is false. There are newer studies about transgender people and their brains, both of ftm and mtf and both on people who took hormones and other who didn't took hormone, all say nearly the same things as this video does, with small details that are different such as that it's not the size that matters but it's still a good thing to see if someone is trans or not for example.
This actually helped explain Transgender a lot better for me. Never really understood it, but I want to better understand what it means for future references and/or friends.

Although it's Tumblr, they have the voice and are making the community look like a circus.
Some of the things in the video they lie about though, for example the bit about suicide rates going down after surgery, the suicide rates are actually the same before and after transgender surgery

I honestly cant stand the hate that trans people are still receiving. These humans are just trying to live their life and they just want to be happy but some people just gotta try and be smart. Trans is okay. Transphobes are just dull and cant accept that there are people who are different. They're not affecting your life. They're not trying to "make" you trans. I don't understand why this has become such a problem.
No one is saying they're trying to make us trans. However, they do expect us to play along with their delusion. I'm not calling someone who is obviously a man a "woman" and vice versa. A small percentage of the population shouldn't expect the rest of humanity to change their definition of gender just because they're confused about their identity. That's not fair.
I bet you see transgender people quite often and don't realise they're trans. A good percentage of us pass completely undetected, and you'd never know unless we told you. It's only during the transition process that it's easy to spot us.
@@hazel2241 no I've seen a few in person and it was easy to tell. There are some small features from both men and women that you can't change with plastic surgery or hormonal therapy.
@@sofiesiebertova2874 I never denied gender dysphoria exists and is classified as a mental illness. My point is that transitioning is not a cure. It only contributes to an individual's delusion that they are the gender they think they are. However biological facts would disagree with their feelings. If men could actually become women (and vice versa women could become men) then they would be capable of physically functioning accordingly, which includes reproducing as the female or male they think they are. Yet that will never be biologically possible. So how do you expect an entire society to think transitioning is a rational solution at all?
I honestly didn't know that being transgender did have science involved, or at least not brain stuff, I thought the science-ish part was like surgeries and hormones, so this is very interesting and good to know. I actually feel better about myself knowing that one part of me is male, my brain, no matter how stupid that may sound it still makes me feel good.

Sorry for making an negative input here bc I really try to understand all this. But why I never heard of a Trans who telled, oh and during my journey becoming a male/woman they looked at my brain and made it safe for me. If it that easy why don't they look at brains of those who do it?
Its not a scientific representation. Its a story told with the means of cartoon without any citations. This does not explain anything at all apart from wishful thinking.
I've been working on artificial neural networks and I've learned a few things that most people in the comments section don't seem to get. Gender dysphoria is a wiring disorder. You can't treat a wiring disorder with any kind of drug or hormone. Once the wiring is set it can't change unless the connections being removed have very low weights attached to them. This is something the brain can do on its own when necessary. Removing connections with small weights won't cause immediate problems but it can cause the network to have trouble learning new things in the future. Anything else that alters the wiring would be brain damage. The wiring is set at birth and trying to change it to "cure Autism" or "eliminate geder dysphoria" would simply be playing God. The way you treat wiring disorders is by teaching them how to deal with it (which is how Autism treatment works), or changing the rest of the body to fit the brain (I.e. Hormone replacement therapy) Sources: * machine learning course by Andrew Ng * www.nytimes.com/2014/08/22/health/brains-of-autistic-children-have-too-many-synapses-study-suggests.html * my own ability to reason about neural nets
Oof that's very interesting info, and confirms what I've concluded myself. Changing the brain, an organ immensely complex and difficult to play around with - one could even label attempting to "change" the brain unnaturally as human experimentation, is much more difficult and ultimately pointless when changing the body is much easier and more effective.
Damn is this interesting. I've gone from being bigoted, to being okay with trans people, to accepting them, and now I'm actually trying to understand them and this video helped a lot with that last part. So if I understand correctly, you can basically test for gender dysphoria by studying the brain? My best friend is transgender and so knowing that there's actual differences in her brain than that of a male's helps me to further accept her. Thank you.
In some cases, but some of the info here is a little outdated. Gender dysphoria can come from many things, but one of them can be a differently structured brain. I recommend the video "Healthcare of the Transgender Patient", it's fairly long but you can skip to the part where he talks about causes of gender dysphoria. But to summarise it's a kind of intersex condition, something somewhere in the body with the brain/chromosomes/hormones/etc. did not develop to be fully male or female for whatever reason. That's also why nonbinary people exist. Some people are lucky that it makes them visibly androgynous, but in other cases they don't look like the gender they feel like, and have to work hard for it.
Thank you so much I’m a cisgender bisexual male (still in the closet 😭😂), and I want to later become an activist for the LGBTQA+, but as I’m cisgender I was having a hard time understanding trans people. It doesn't explain the science, nor are there any scientific facts established. The studies they used are not very reliable, and on top of that the brain is too complex to ascertain whether a transgender brain is similar to that of the experienced sex's - there's millions of dimensions to it, and they only listed a few. There's also equally reliable studies that show the transgender brain is similar to that of the biological sex's. It's an issue that does need to be talked about, and a video by asapscience does not conclude it.

Thank you for making a video with a scientific angle. For transparency, I am someone who holds what I describe as subconscious transphobic views.

Assigning a gender to someone is exactly what we do, considering you don't know if that person is trans and transitions later. Your own son could be trans and you wouldn't know until he opens up to you. Would you still say he was born a male?
R134eS2o selling out to who 😂
The Evil Koala 👌🏽
Crazy that this video is now outdated
@JaneChristensen. No, it doesn't. There are studies that contradict the video. F. Kurth et al. 2022 for example.
Womp womp

Heidymarleny2 literally all the butthurts in these comments
What's funny is that now that I've accepted myself as trans, I feel substantially less depressed than while I was repressing, despite the fact that all I've done to start transitioning is voice training (I can't do anything else until I move out of my parents house)
I have come out to 3 of my friends though, which helps.
That being said I have been experiencing (or perhaps noticing) more dysphoria after I started accepting myself. (and noticed some behaviors in my youth that I didn't know why I did them back then, but make more sense now. (an aversion to shorts even in summer so I don't need to see my hairy legs, at one point I wore hoodies even in summer to avoid seeing my arm hair, and especially an interest in gender swap stories that weren't 90% comedy)
Women grow hair in those places, so your dysphoria about that (and the increase in dysphoria after deciding you are trans) proves that it comes from a place of social indoctrination not anything inherent.
@@martind2520mind your own business, coward.

I've had to shave my legs just to get an iota of euphoria whilst I am living with my parents. They know, but they haven't been supportive and I don't feel comfortable making the full social transition whilst they are around. I am going to be coming out publicly soon either way as I have no desire to live in this body longer than I have to.
I have noticed more dysphoria as well. I'm also extremely anxious about how the world is going to perceive me, and I am scared of prejudice. However, since coming out I am already much happier and there is more good than bad. The more I do to feminise myself, the happier I feel.
@@Niaandrea7812 You know that female humans grow leg hair right? It is not a male only thing.
But I'm not, so anything that can help me feel more feminine is a blessing.

This example amount many
I read many of them.. the science presented in this video doesn't describe gender identity with regards to biology but conditions like turners disease, kleinfelders syndrome and a mix of what historically was related to hermaphroditic conditions.

The social sciences are called “soft sciences” for a reason

If men could actually become women (and vice versa women could become men) then they would be capable of physically functioning accordingly, which includes reproducing as the female or male they think they are.
Hormone replacement therapy)

Oof that's very interesting info, and confirms what I've concluded myself. Changing the brain, an organ immensely complex and difficult to play around with - one could even label attempting to "change" the brain unnaturally as human experimentation, is much more difficult and ultimately pointless when changing the body is much easier and more effective.

most wholesome comment thus far.
