I had the same issue, mine drove me insane. my main bearings, thrust bearing was worn and it let my crankshaft and flywheel move enough to rub the inside of the bellhousing by the starter. Old timer found it for me. I had changed everything clutch assembly and flywheel twice and drove me crazy for three years.
Drained all fluids, both differentials and t/f case...got new balanced drive shafts front and rear and the noise still persists. Just got the jeep out of the garage for the summer and it’s still making the noise when I’m coasting or decelerating in neutral. Like already stated, when the top and doors are off it’s not load enough to hear but I know it’s still there. Only thing I haven’t done yet is check the bearings, remove the t/f case, or check the input shaft. Don’t know if I already said this in a previous post, but when I was having a similar noise a few years ago I replaced the ax15 with an NV3500 while replacing the clutch as well. Tranny has been fine and is a beast, so I’ll be checking the other three things I haven’t done yet to find the noise whenever I get the time. I’ll update again when I get it figured out. It runs fine, just don’t want to cause further problems down the road. Thanks everyone for your responses, I enjoy reading what others have done...thank you.
It's definitely the tcase I have the same exact noise just uploaded a video of it actually, I tore my tcase apart and still haven't found anything too out of the ordinary. Some chain slop but no signs of it hitting the case or anything
My transmission was a weird case. In 3rd (which is direct drive but it's a manual transmission) if I let off the gas to engine brake nothing happens but if I did it in 1st or 2nd at low speeds, any engine braking made a VERY LOUD and destructive sounding grind. But if I managed to not put any coasting load on the transmission it worked fine but that meant ABSOLUTELY NO ENGINE BRAKING. I'll just say I sawpped it out with a much better one but in the interim IT WAS F***ING HELL.
Well I know I’m a couple years late, but my 91 yj is doing this too. Only in neutral and coasting in 5th. Soon as throttle is added, it goes away. I’m glad I found someone else with this problem. I’m positive it’s the t-case. Have you figured it out?
Mason Lapsley I’ve been driving it all spring so far and it is definitely the transfer case chain. I still haven’t replaced it yet but it’s getting worse so I’m currently looking for a lightly used one at pull-a-part. I will update everyone when I replace it. It has gotten loud enough now that I can hear it with the top off; and it’s starting to get annoying.
Buck Wild yeah man, I would find a replacement t-case, but I have a slip yoke eliminator on my current case. I’m looking into a cheap master rebuild and doing it in like driveway
@@masonlapsley2245 Did you end up doing the rebuild? Mine only makes the noise in 5th. Still noisy after chain replacement so I'm looking into TC drop kit or bearing rebuild kit
I'm curious if the problem was with the transfer case. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new pilot bearing and do the clutch while I have it apart. but don't want to go down that road right now if it's just a problem with the transfer case. My jeep sounds exactly the same under the same conditions. Rattling noise under no engine load or matched engine RPM (no acceleration or deceleration).
Houser4545 thanks for posting, I haven't changed anything in the transfer case yet because I haven't had any real issues with it besides hearing that sound. I did however get new balances front and rear drive shafts. It's seemed to take care of the noise, but I've been riding with the doors and too off so haven't had it quiet enough to listen recently. After I had the new drive shafts installed I never noticed the noise, but that doesn't mean it's not still there. It's just not loud enough for me to hear it riding convertible right now.
really trying to find out if the chain was the issue. I have this problem but its louder. No shop can figure it out but im almost certain that it is the chain. please help
Jack Janas I would check both front/rear drive shafts, and differentials. I drained all my deferential fluid and transfer case and replaced it. I also installed new balanced drive shafts and the noise has seemed to go away. I've been playing around riding topless without the doors so if the noise is still there, it's not loud enough to hear over my tire roar.
Thanks for the response. I bought a transfer case for mine two years ago so luckily I can get a whole new one under warranty. Hopefully whatever I'm hearing will be gone. It is beginning to shake my jeep, so it could be the chain or something
Update: Replaced the transfer case and the issue wasn't fixed. I havent yet had a chance to look but i am convinced that my front differential is worn out or some bearing is bad.
Johansen Casasus, I found that it was the 4 wheel drive handle to engage 4x4. It was something in the spring that was just rubbing metal on metal. Sprayed some white lightning grease in it and took it right away. It realized that it was most loud when the handle was all the way down in 2 wheel drive. There's usually a little play in the lever.
The squeaky issue you have that you didn’t mention in this video. Do you know what’s causing that issue? Because I’m dealing with it now and I have no idea where it’s coming from!
How's it going with the rattling at idle? I recently had my clutch replaced and the new clutch makes this rattle at idle. WDYT of ruclips.net/video/bWDksooVGMs/видео.html as a solution?
Parparita Mihai, I narrowed it down to the t-case chain but haven't noticed it getting better or worse so I'm just waiting for the right time to rebuild it when life slows down a bit. I'll update as soon as I get it rebuilt though.
Emmanuel Rodriguez , yes it has a 2 1/2 inch suspension lift. I’ve had the doors and top off since spring, so I haven’t heard anything but wind lately. I’m about to put it all back on and I’ll see what it sounds like. I’ve done everything besides rebuilding the transfer case though. I’ll update in a few weeks once it gets colder here.
Buck Wild, more than likely you need to get a driveshaft and slip yoke eliminator kit. It seems like you have the same problem I had. As soon as I got those two things changed, that rattling was gone.

Fixed my issue. I had the same noise. Installed the transfer case drop down kit and it fixed my problem instantly
Driveshaft u - joint maybe

Mine has been doing that same exact !! I just got 10x worse an hour ago. Limped it home. Checking comments 😁

Did u ever figure it out?
@@ToLateForYouMr No, we put in a T-18 instead.
Dang bro you described my issue exactly.
Transmission and motor mounts? I'm dealing with a weird grind noise that I know is not the brakes or bearings. I'm waiting on new mounts myself.
I had the same thing turned out to be rear diff angle
Did you find the problem
My 95 yj grinds like that when I’m turning right or letting off the gas costing
Would you feel a slight vibration while driving at speed. It sounds like what mine is doing now just wondering if that was your prob?
I had the same noise change your pilot bearing behind the flywheel. problem solved
I have a similar issue with my 97XJ but it only grinds when i put it in reverse... any idea?

changed the clutch 3 times??
Have you fixed this issue yet? I have the identical sound from 05 Rubicon with 6 speed

Hey man any luck? My tj makes the exact same noise I have no idea what the hell it is.
Sounds like the rear bearings at least to do mine the same way
i have te exact same noise and do not know what it is

jkiddstown05 my noise was the pilot bearing behind the flywheel it’s an easy change
U joint or bad drift shaft
Hi, I'm interesting in that sqeaking!!! What is that sqeaking at 0:50 and how do I fix it!!!
Same!
Seats? The bushings on the sliders wear out / fall off causing slight play and wobble in seats. That’s what it was on mine and others I’ve seen
My jeep has same exact squeaking but louder what is it??
Glove box, add new or thicker stop rubbers and the squeak goes away.
That intermittent squeak is what I have. Have you found it? 0:45

Same! What's the solution?
I have the squeak and it's my right rear body mount under gas tank. Rusted through.
Drive shaft could be bad .
sounds like its the t case
its bearing .

Did you replace the Chain yet?
drive shaft
Yea I'm almost 100% sure that the chain as become loose, looking for a good master rebuild kit. 😡
Buck Wild so that it forsure
