  • Megacities with no historical precedent or predecessor are being created in China. As a reaction to mass migration from the countryside to the cities, gigantic superstructures are being built that surpass the volume and height of any buildings in Europe or the US. They also possess forms and functions that have never existed before. The documentary showcases eight projects, in the cities Chongqing, Behai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo and Wuhan.

However, this new architecture is often chaotic. In an attempt to provide living space for the rapidly growing population, it ignores China's history and traditions. City planners, architects and designers are overwhelmed and lag behind. With modern museums and "neighbourly" skyscrapers, some try to give the anonymous structures a sense of identity and culture.

This video paints a gloomy picture of the Chinese megacities. I have visited many megacities in China and I can tell you that they are much better than the maker of this video wants you to know.

Something about China doesn’t seem right. If the economy is the second largest in the world, why are so many Chinese trying to immigrate to America illegally? They are the fastest growing demographic of illegals- even bigger than the Hispanics. Moreover, where are the high tech products these factories in the megacities produce? It is only recently that the Chinese managed to build the equivalent of the Boeing 737 (the C-219), 55 years after the American “bird” first flew.

One documentary featured an architect where they were tearing down an old section of the city that had a street with small shops & houses with courtyards and he stretched out his arms and said "I'm taking this neighborhood and making a high-rise." His building had small shops, and floors that were "parks" and schools in the building. One floor had a community kitchen (apartments had their own), but he said people loved to cook together for a large gathering. His idea was not to isolate the people in the building, but make it so they got to know each other the way they had on the old street. The architect who had the building that looked like separate houses had that idea, but he was missing the "park & community area."

From the fashions on this it was filmed in about circa 2016/17, which is a world away from today's multi-speed society. Btw the 'ghost cities' are a different development model - everything's built at the start, the population grows after. This saves a large amount of money n- for example Ordos was built future-proofed for 1 million inhabitants, and is abput 40-50% full as of 2022.

The Kangbashi District was supposed to house 300,000 BY 2010. Even by 2020 there were still only 150,000 people living there. It maybe future proofed, but the development still failed in the expectation of the builders. And now the still few people living there have to maintain and repair unused housing and infrastructure. At the very core it was a waste of money and resources, poor planning.

A very decent video with fair points. We would not romanticize uncontrollably growing cities that are governed by concentrated sources of finical power, nor buildings built by single man while using "I" and "my building" in every sentences. But I love that the video is trying to strip our western centered world, to understand that there are vast different dynamics and challenges than those that we are occupied with in Europe and that the migrants are the vital moving motor of the cities. In this kind of cities participation might be far more challanging, but also in our beleive is that in this "vital"cities as the video often referred too, participation comes natural.

@@rossbank7248 The problem is that there's an enormous difference in living between Africans and europeans. I love Africa and Africans, but inviting hoards to Europe is a bad idea. The same goes the other way. - If I want to experience Chinese culture I'd go to China, I want to experience African culture I'd go to Africa. Mass immigration from far-away places is usually the beginning of the end for such places. (I.E Rome)
Just as an example, one African lady whre I live made a fire in the basement of an appartment block because she was trying to heat up the block, almost killing everyone inside. New housing is practically ruined in many instances where middle Easterners and Africans have lived in there. Even though there's fully functional kitchens, many of them will still prepare and cook food on the floor, and maintainance is non-existent.
