This video was a life saver!! As a DJ one of biggest issues with the new MacBook pros are the lack of USB options and the hubs that I’ve bought could never hold up due to the lack of power. Literally just bought this item after watch your video. Great content!!!
these new M1 macs are powerful, but the Air?! Unreal
Exactly what I need! Beautiful studio!!
Love how far the studio has come Jon. Also whilst everyone must be going crazy over the mess of cables I know you’re saving that til last as it’s your favourite bit really!! It will be a work of art when it’s finished I am sure. All the best dude, Trevor
5:34 I love your cable management system, looks like something I would do
At abou 5:55 I nearly dropped dead from the clean cable management. It looks like an eagles nest.
Any updates about your experience with the setup after a few months? Reliable? Problems? Good audio quality or pops/cracks?
Hi Jon I've applied the "one cable" setup in my home studio and the result is amazing. Thx a lot
Thanks for showing this off. Was thinking of switching to the M1 Air as well, and wasn't sure if it would support a solution like this in my studio too. You got way more gear than me, and if this works for you, I'm set.
god, this cable management kills me; however, you got a banging setup man
Do you have a solution for using external SSDs over wifi when using the macbook different rooms in the house (i think the SSDs will have some performance decrease because of the wireless thing) but when connecting to the cable the SSDs deliver full performance? And THEN being able to unplug one of these SSDs for mobile work and use them for plugging it into the MB directly at a friends studio
I bought this dock hoping to do the same with my m1 macbook air. Instead this wavlink introduced noise in every element of my studio. It shot noise through my audio interface (usb), the headphone output of the m1 mac. The headphone out of my 4k monitor, the audio output of the wavlink itself. I swapped it out for a caldigit thunderbolt 4 element hub, problem solved. I found the wavlink dock to be of cheap plastic and low quality in all aspects. I can say this video review should be looked at with the use of a c-clamp and shoddy cable management as the tip of the iceberg for prospective buyers. Lesson learned for me here. Thanks.
wow, havent been on this page for a while. Studio looks phenomenal man. Great job!
Inspirational. I need to do the same with my home studio.
The lighting in your studio is really smooth and looks cool, with zones of slightly different colours, from various screens. My compliments.
Would the hub power a UAD Apollo 8 rack unit that runs TB3? Usually that has to go directly into my macbook to work.
Also the best thing about that hub is the length of the wire. Usually hubs have very short cable length
Did it work ??
yeah i was wondering how those usb c hubs can fit 10+ inputs on to them until i ordered one and realized there wasn’t nearly enough power to power more than 3 things at once.
Don't you have to eject all your external Devices like USB-Sticks or Harddrives everytime you pull out the Cable from your macbook?
No? Apple warns you of this because there are a few bad apples that will write data without you knowing, but once you save everything and wait a second after it’s done saving, nothing should be transferring and USB devices are smart enough to know not to blow up when unplugged.
I Have this problem. I'm using a mac book air with a dongle but when I connect my interface which is apollo twin x it doesnt see it. you think using wavlink MY APOLLO TWIN X INTERFACE WOULD REPOND because I have all my equipment running thew my interface..thanks for your help if you can.
Thanks man! Your videos have been really helpful for me in deciding which direction to go with my Macbook Air purchase. I decided to get the 8GB Ram one though. Hopefully that's enough :)
16gb man
8 GB on a M1 is feels like 16 on a regular one- so unless you are going to program multiple orchestras it will work fine for you. We also have an Air M1 at home. 129 Track Production in Ableton with multiple instances of Kontakt, Nexus 3 and even Diva (everything not running natively!) is no problem 😜
Have a good one 🎊
@@guidosc3470 thanks for the feedback man! 😁
@@guidosc3470 and that is with 8gb of ram?
Yeah, once u go 16gb, u dont go back to 8, trust.
OK I have to come over there and manage all those wires or I won't sleep tonight. Kidding. Otherwise good video. :)
Useful video, great! but can I connect my scarlett 2i2 1st gen to this hub?
The USB - C hub is given in the link. But what about the USB C Cable which is connecting the Macbook and the Hub? What are the USB C to C cable's requirements to power this whole thing?
Do these usb hubs introduce any latency?
I was wondering the same!
Anyone got an answer for this question?
I guess yes because technically u have another „bridge“ which the data has to pass if you knowwhat i mean
Nothing noticeable
@@mleonee you shure ?
Interesting video. Thnak you. So, you don't have a problem with not eject the Backup-HardDrive before unplug the one cable? In the past that crushed one of my HDDs.
Hi, the second link is wrong, there's wi-fi router instead Usb C Hub. Please check it.
should work now.
@@Jonsine nope
@@akshatkavidayal if it still doesn't work it's probably not available in your country
@@Jonsine Link is functional - tested in Germany.
The connection between the computer and the hub is Thunderbolt 3, not USB.
If the cable is too long, you won't get the 40 GB/s Thunderbolt 3 speed. You will get 20 GB/s. The cable that comes with the hub is only 0.7 meters to do 40 GB/s.
The Thunderbolt cable length spec for the high speed is pretty short unless you buy a more expensive active cable.
I have a Thunderbolt 3 add-on card on my Windows 10 desktop. I use it to connect my Universal Audio Apollo 4X Thunderbolt and high speed storage
was the whole video about a USB hub? haha love the videos man
Which exact Wavlink model is that?
Amazing solution I am blown away! Thank you for sharing.
Pewdiepie would clearly disapprove this studio’s cable management
Thanks for the video. I use Plugable Hub for my WFH set up. It provides connectivity to two 4k monitors and plenty of USB connectivity to everything else. It also provides provides power to my M1 Mackbook Air.
How about a delay on audio interface? Does it change whether you plug it directly into your MacBook?
I second this question.
is the power to charge my macbook reliable? I am afraid that it will damage my macbook pro 13. please solve my doubt. does not cause electrical damage in my macbook? can i connect apollo twin x interface?
You speak my language of DIY and figure it out!
Hi.. Brother.. You having nice stuffs.... Great work 🤝
any latency issue ?
I literally can't find any videos that address this
This still the best one? or did a better version come out now/same specs better price...
Hey Jon I've been watching you now for about five years
Could you teach me what to do to connect my keyboard and mic to my mac air for zoom thank you.
Great Solutions! Smart!
That wirey mess is messing with my OCD though!!!
Wow! That’s awesome. I can’t wait to see you clean up them cables 😅
its not clear which model is the expensive hub as the link takes us to a bunch of products... could you confirm the hub exact model ? thanks
Just bought my M1 Mac Book Pro they didn't have any Mac Airs M1's, just started the video and I really want to see how you did this, Thx for the the infoe!👍👍👍
Hey can i know what is your M1 specs?
Apple's biggest move of the decade probably was using their own chips. Yes, you can now run a high end music studio with a MacBook Air
Nice. That wavlink I'm looking at now. I'm going to be upgrading my 2015 MBP that is nothing compared to an m1 mac air for logic pro x. I was looking at ways to run the stack of audio interfaces I have (for guitars, bass, drum set....etc etc etc) midi controllers, pads, beatsteps, synths, old synths with midi pin > usb, ipad pro's running model 15, moog model D etc with midi outs. This seems like I can have my mixing desk and all of the things hooked into it. This looks like to fit the bill!
Hi John, great concept! A video about the „puk“, - the white thing you use to power up everything would be great too. All the best!
Sir, you are a genius, this is exactly the problem I need to solve, thank you!!
Great video, but what do you use when you are not at your desk and you are on the road?
What MacBook Air you have included specs
What about a MacBook Pro 2012 ? I bought that because it has every port even a cd drive
Awesome video, I was researching the Apple Macbook and this video help me with a lot of questions that I had. thanks!
What’s the song that was played in background at the start? Can you please help me identify the song as I really liked it? The lyrics was : you gotta let me know, you gotta love me or let me go. I am not getting the exact result in google. Please help.
thank you its one of my own songs: love or let go - Jon Sine
I came here for tech advice and taking back a long list of songs.
Thanks for this will definitely try it out. So fustrating with these m1 macs not having enough connections and with the usb c hubs ive used not having enough power
Dude. I’ve been looking for someone who could tell me what hub to buy! I’ve been looking for weeks and I just found this when I wasn’t looking. Pricey as hell but if it’s as good as you say I’m in.
When you are on the go…and you have to connect something, using a dock…does it feel uncomfortable for DJing or Music production? Is it worth paying for 14” macbook?
Is the usb-C cable provided with macbook Air can be used for the monitor or do i need to purchase thunderbolt cable separately?
Hi, You know, actually I used an Dell Universal Dock D6000 with my Macbook Pro 2018, and it´s running very well.
Awesome video… what cable are you using from your hub to laptop?
You are always my first go when I need help with studio setup. Thank you!
Hi there, I was interested in the video because of the cable mess and took a closer look at the more expensive hub. Is it true that I can hook up 2 external monitors with it like it is shown on the Amazon pictures? I have 3 monitors plugged in to my 2019 16“ MBP which also means 3 TB4 slots gone. I thought I could save 2 with that hab you use.
Thx in advance
Hello Jon..... I’m trying to connect Mac Book Pro M1 with Yamaha PSR E-413 but the looks like the MIDI software is not out for the silicon chip .... could you suggest something so that I can connect to garage band .... please help
I am looking to buy my first ever mac (mac mini) for desk my setup but this method showed just blows my mind. One silly question, if example i configure the external monitor in potrait/ vertical mode, would the macbook air remembers the configuration or do i need to reconfigure everytime i plug in? Thanks anyone
If I just want to plug in my scarlett 2i2 (which has my mic and guitar plugged into it) and my alesis 25 key midi keyboard, will a simple usb hub be enough as opposed to a powered one?
your sound card is connected to the hub ?
The link for the on off switch is not working how can I look it up ??
No latency piggybacking hubs?
**Buyer beware** Videos like this need to specify exactly what model MacBook Pro is being discussed as I recently purchased a Belkin USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) Gigabit Ethernet adapter for my mid-2015 MacBook Pro which is not compatible with a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 adapter. This model of MacBook Pro requires a Thunderbolt 2 Gigabit Ethernet adapter instead. Simply calling it a MacBook Pro is doing a disservice for those who may end up wasting money buying the wrong adapter.
what about the battery, if you connect this keeping your battery chargin, does this may be a problem?
MacBooks, as with most laptops and phones, are optimized to not overcharge the battery. In fact, it is healthier for the battery to have it constantly plugged in because the battery gets bypassed and therefore never wears out.
Hi. I can’t get that link to work for the main hub. Can someone post a link to it.
Hi,
great video, I tried that setup, but I have some bad noise by putting my extern audio interface. Is there any special cable ?? I don't know what is wrong with my setup....I connected all with one cable and I have one extra cable to my Mac connected from audio interface, after very short time the bad noise are coming.
helpful feedbacks are welcome :-) *** and best wishes and happy new year
Great video, but this lack of cable management gave me bad TMJ pain. lol.
I wished you showed was was behind the desk or the first set up
Greetings. I think the link to the powered hub is not working. Thanks.
Where did you get those wall panels and lights that are behind them? Also what and where did you get those ceiling panels as well?
What is cable brand/model ? Is that just for power or datatransfer ?
I have a macbook air connected to a Samsung 37" ultrawide screen using just single thunderbolt 5k cable. Laptop is supposed to get 80w from the monitor...the thing is that since macbook air just has 1 plug... is also constantly charging and ruined my battery in 9 months. Its says that I need a battery service and max capacity has dropped to 70% I tried many SMC resets but computer stills showing battery service. Is there anything I can do to go around this issue?
Does this multiple usb hub solution working reliably day to day or is it very temporary?
3:50 yes you’re right Jon, curved monitors were for gaming or cinema…which just makes the experience great…but it’s feels rather worse when working…you have to move your head a lot ig when you have a curved longer screen…so is not meant for work…instead move your eyeballs with a proper sized and distanced screen…
what about the backup hard drives? Those would need to be ejected properly, rather than just unplugged?
Great video thank you.
Are you connecting the monitor to the WAVLINK hub ?
does it have overheating issues?
Thank you for sharing Jon. Quite a nice solution to a problem that most of us are facing. Cool video.
What MacBook is that? 2020 air?
Can you tell me why my audio interface (scarlett 2i2 3rd gen) makes noise through monitors when it’s connected to this USB hub?
how to organise those cables ? suggest
Thanks for doing this. I’ve had so many problems with usb-c hubs. Currently using the J-5 create and it always loses connection and I can’t connect to WiFi when it’s plugged in. The don’t mention that on packaging. I guess I gotta spend some money to get quality.
So is all of the effort just so that it is done with one cable? Lets say you don't mind using one of the other lightning ports to keep charging, and used a regular cheaper hub to plug in midi controllers, would you still have the power issue? Thanks
Do you run your OSX from an external drive? I am trying to make a setup similar to yours. My interface only works if the OSX is on the drive inside the laptop. I am having trouble with it working with an external drive/osx. Just wondering if you have run into this issue possibly.
So satisfying to see your solution. I’m inspired🤙🏽
Thanks for the advice and products!
Not quite so simple as unplugging: Don’t forget to “trash”/dismount any external drives, like the one under your tangle.
this is amazing, thank you for this video
Hey mate, I have the same M1 as you, connected to a CalDigit thunderbolt hub with a thunderbolt 3 T5 drive and a usb-c Lacie drive. Now it keeps saying that I should delete the drive before pulling it out, which I'm not. It's always in the hub. Now every time I re-connect the hub the MB Air crashes. Do you have that sometime too? Do you think it's the hub? Hope you (or anyone) can help. Cheers!
Still using the same hub ?
does something exist with which you can route and share several usb-devices simultaneously with more than 3 PC/Mac at once?
Speed issue with one cable? Hi Jon, I have an M1 MBP. One Thunderbolt port used for my monitor, the second thunderbolt goes to a hub similar to yours (3 x thunderbolt ports including one for charging the M1, USB-C ports, HDMI ports). Could you please check the read/write speed of your external HDs connected via your thunderbolt hub? I have a Samsung T5 SSD and when connected directly to one of the MBP's thunderbolt ports,I get around 360 Mb/s read/write speeds. However, when connected to my thunderbolt hub, I get around 35 Mb/s! Maybe one cable setup cannot handle all the info --> bottleneck?
Hey Jon,
Just a suggestion,
Please apply a de esser on your audio track of you talking on your RUclips videos...
I feel a need of that
U can use Audio highjack and add one to your liking 😜
@@Jonsine true 😂
I agree de-essing is needed on the majority of RUclips dialogue not just on Jon’s channel. I watch RUclips on my iPad so unfortunately I can’t use “Audio Highjack” as an option. So I’m stuck with the 👂 piercing SSSSS. I do think it’s ironic that a lot of the Audio/Music Producers on RUclips teach you how to make your song perfect but then when it come to their own RUclips production the Audio isn’t pristine. Sometimes it makes me question their actual ability as an Audio Producer/Engineer... sometimes.
Do you have to take your ilok dongle out with you when you go to another studio? What’s the plan if you hide the hub?
