Hands down the best device review I've come across! Results are what I expected according to my own personal experience - good to see it actually confirmed
One of the reasons I love it is because I like to wear and analog (regular) watch sometimes and Oura 4 sends all my steps and heart rate to apple health. Even if I go for a walk it sends the exercise data to apple health. When I get home I can sleep with the apple watch and get data from both. I also use the Apple Watch and Garmin for exercise. It basically fills in the gaps when your not wearing a watch with heart rate and steps to apple health if your an Apple user.
Hi. I follow your work from Hungary. Unfortunately there are no Hungarian subtitles, but I will spend time on it so I know what you are talking about. Based on your test, I bought a smart watch and the Oura ring gen 3. Thank you very much for your work. Clean, professional, modest, humble. Thanks you.
Most of the better performing devices seemed to be attached to the wrist, which means a) better results and b) means their batteris are orders of magnitude bigger, which improves measurement spacing. Oura's origin was in sleep tracking, and that is where it sill belongs
Thank you for your invaluable research. I have just one question: Is the Ultrahuman Ring Air review coming soon? I would like to see a comparison to the Oura ring.
You should make your website more informative like adding the research findings, data tables, verdicts, comparison, thoughts etc. We all love some great read really. Love from Bangladesh.
Thank you very much for your work, and the data! Have been wearing the Oura v3 for three years - continue to love it. I use it for general activity and sleep tracking, and long-term fitness/recovery tracking. Use H10 for sports. Based on your review, I will not upgrade until the battery fully dies (currently requires recharging every 2-3 nights).

I found this review after ordering a Oura 4. Huge thanks for an excellent, thorough, engaging review! I'm a scientist and definitely appreciated the data!
Nice review! I recently picked up the oura ring 4 and Im pretty happy with it so far. Not fussed with the subscription as that I am happy to put up with. I also decided to trial the whoop 4 strap but Im not so keen on the pricey monthly fee but it doesnt hurt to try it out for 30 days.
@@leonarda4470 He was doing that in his older videos. There are also some scientific research papers published that compare accuracy of spo2. If I remember correctly most watches gave some random inaccurate results.
I find the HR and O2 overnight is pretty close between the Apple Watch and Oura 4 (and even whoop). The HRV with the Oura seems to track lower than Apple Watch, and whoop giving the most positive HRV result
I couldn't wait for your video after launch even I searched every day than I bought before watching you. Now I wish I don't regret after wathcing it :D
Thanks for your video. I find that the Oura ring gen 3 does a much better job of analyzing sleep than the whoop, and is pretty close too the Apple Watch 's sleep tracking. Also, I have found that daily step tracking totals have been within 500 steps of the apple watch. I have found that the key to the Oura ring and getting accurate metrics/data is having a snug fit and wearing the ring on your non-dominant hand index finger. This alleviates much if not all of the missing data that people have. People need to remember that the sensors need to have contact continuously with your skin, so you can't have a ring that continually moves around or is loose.
I have the oura ring 4 and love it. It is amazing at tracking overal health and sleep. I have an apple watch but cant sleep with it on so this works perfectly to fill tht gap in data.
If possible, I’d really appreciate seeing the results comparison chart for smart rings separated from the smart watches so we can see them compared to each other. Thanks!
@@TheQuantifiedScientistPlease review Ultrahuman smart ring!!! Just about all online reviews lean towards Ultraman ring for better data accuracy. And Ultrahuman doesn’t require subscription!
Love your videos! Wondering if you might consider taking a look at the ultrahuman ring air. I’m between that and the oura ring 4 and would be nice to see how they compare.
Hi ! Thank you so much for your detailled and scientific videos, they are extremely helpful :) I was wondering if you could also measure the radiation (rf and emf) of devices, on and off airplane mode - would be an important element in decision making, at least for me :)
I actually find the ring very easy to check alignment because I use my thumb to just check the groove is in the right spot. Using my thumb to touch the groove and check it with the same hand without even looking at it.
Had a pretty similar conclusion after testing both, the Whoop strap 4.0 and the Oura ring 4. Still stuck to the Oura ring afterall because I prefer the form factor during sleep. Worth mentioning: I also don't mind the bad sports tracking because the Strava integration works great with Oura - so I can just use a proper sports tracking device for workouts and Oura seemlessly includes the data for overall scores. Appreciate the detailed anaysis, as always. If you ever get your hands on a Suunto device - I'd really look forward to a review on it (I personally use the Suunto Ocean). Cheers from Vienna!
1.) I know that Oura claims that the ring is also an activity tracker, but no (hobby) athlete or someone who really cares about heartrate tracking, is using the oura ring for activity tracking…no device which is not connectable to an heart rate strap is a serious activity or sports tracker…Oura is for overall health and especially sleep and here Oura is very good… 2.) Oura recommends to wear the ring on the index finger for best results, Rob wears the ring always on his ring finger (he did it with Oura 3 also) and that may also be the reason for some of the bad results…I use an Apple Watch for Strength Training, Running, Swimming…and the data appears automatically in the Oura App…for sleep I believe the data from the ring much much more than from the Apple Watch (though the results from Robs testing are different) and so I have the best of both worlds…
Hi Marion. I can say this is 100% accurate. I'm with Oura since ver. 2 and the first ring I wore was on my index finger, then when I swapped for Oura 3, I moved Oura to the ring finger, after the battery in my Oura 3 got very bad - max 2 days, the company sent me the replacement, I got different size and put it on my index finger, again. I can confirm that the readings are much more accurate now, before the discrepancy was sometimes so huge that I was confused myself! I've been using Whoop 4.0 for over a year as well (not any more) and I'm sticking with Oura for sleep tracking ... for athletic performance I'm using Fourth Frontier, so have no issue that Oura is not very accurate here, besides can't use Oura doing my martial arts or weight lifting
@ I still don’t know why many of the reviewers are wearing the ring on any other finger than the index finger and complaining about the bad results…maybe they WANT that the results to be that bad? 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t know…it’s the same with me…I’m with Oura since Gen. 2 so I have a lifetime subscription for free (don’t think that I would pay the monthly fee, that’s why I was never very much into Whoop) and for weight lifting and martial arts, I take the ring of my finger…
I got the Oura4 for almost a month and I am stunned how accurate it is for sleep, stress and other health metrics (there are so many). For fitness and activity I use an Apple Watch10. The watch doesn’t give me an Interpretation of sleep data (or the other health data) and seems off there (especially when it comes to distinguishing deep and REM sleep). I think the ring and the watch complement each other perfectly.
@@MariaSilva-hq7fhum, no… for all the reasons I mentioned above. Also, the Apple Watch doesn’t measure my stress levels or gives me some interpretation. It’s great for many things, but Oura is complementing it so well.
I think your sleep monitor device is going a little off the tracks here. You might have to so another test after renewing it with a higher accuracy one. Please keep up the great work you habe been doing so far.
Hi, great videos thanks for those. Quick question is there a reason for you to wear it on the ring finger and not on your index ? I think most manufacturers advise for the index finger in priority. Thanks
Oura 4 does a lot better than that on me, compared to my EEG device. Most of the nights the sleep arcitecture is basically spot on, except for possibly some extra deep sleep and wake moments.
Hey, thanks for a very in-depth review! Just a really quick question - how about the heart rate tracking while simply being awake or at work, how would you think oura ring would perform? Closer to like while asleep, or like doing sports? Namely, I would like to (accurately) understand my heart rate throughout the day, and am not that precious about sports tracking in particular. But if hand/arm movements seem to be a part of the issue with the ring form factor than Oura might be a good sleep tracker, but still maybe not be a good health tracker? Thoughts?
I really appreciate the effort you put in all these videos with all the details! There is something that has been bothering me for a while. I don't understand why you qualify a 70% match as "pretty good". For an 8h night, the deep sleep is probably around 2h. 70% difference means 36 minutes. That is a huge difference, isn't it? Do you say it is "pretty good" because generally these devices have low accuracy, or you genuinely think that +-30% is OK?
Hi, I’m a fenix and generally, a garmin user. I’m curious about those rings but not so happy because some if that need year subscription and this is very annoying. Thanks for your tests!
Can u also make a review about the ultrahuman ring and maybe compare them to each other? 😊 i hate that you have to pay for subscription for the oura, i think a lot of people do 🙈
Leuke video trouwens!!
Device Request: Please test the Adam Sensor. Bryan Johnson (of Project Blueprint) recommends it. Please keep the review family friendly if possible. Thanks.
hi, im interested in buying a ring mostly for general health tracking (mainly sleep, stress, heartrate and steps) cause i cant stand wearing a watch to bed. i watched several of your videos and i also discovered the Ultrahuman ring air as an option and im highly considering. would you in a future review take a closer look at that one?
@@TheQuantifiedScientist very well, I'm interested in the Biostrap EVO as well (not sure if you already did a review, if so, nevermind than) Thanks for your work, it's super helpful! Was thinking about getting an oura ring but I will stay with whoop now, let's see if the 5.0 comes out next year and how good it will be..
Hi! Many compliments for your videos, all your test and comparatives are really useful for us! I was waiting this review since the OR4 launch. I switched from OR3 to ULTRAHUMAN RING AIR, due to the Oura monthly fee. Ultrahuman, that is probably the main Oura competitor, provide almost same app (analysis) for free into its app. My concerns are mainly related to: Ultrahuman accuracy; Ultrahuman algorithms reliability. We all knows Oura for their studies and sleep/health accuracy in report and measures, but what about Ultrahuman? It would be great if you could test also the Ultrahuman Ring Air, because a free-of-monthly-charge is a killer factor, but if the device / algorithms are flawed, it’s probably not useful for health monitoring. Thank you! 🙏
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Under your previous video you have also mentioned a retest of latest Galaxy Watches :) This would be very interesting to see if they improved with updates.
For the spinning sessions, I think the first one was so inaccurate due to the sensors. I have a feeling the sensors were on the top of your finger and then created a gap in between your finger and the sensor when you gripped the handle bars. Then halfway through, I bet the ring flipped around and made full contact with your skin. I’d be curious to see how it tested without holding the handlebars on the indoor cycle
Surprising for me! Been wearing a plastic Oura4 ‘sizing’ ring the last month to assess comfort… but waiting for *THIS* video before pulling the trigger. ;) I’ve got an Apple Watch for exercise but don’t like wearing to bed, so thought O4 wld be great compliment for sleep/health. Even tho I’ve kinda hated wearing this ring, I prob would’ve gone ahead… but (by chance) I was able to get an 8-Sleep Pod4 at a LOW price from a friend. It seems that the 8Sleep offers about ~commensurate sleep tracking data as Oura (esp w/ the degrading sleep reference explanation), in addition to its other benefits. So, it feels like the only unique thing that Oura offers is the ‘health’ tracking SOFTWARE. If so, the ~$400 (plus janky subscription) cost all of a sudden don’t seem worth it... So, I guess I’m left with the questions of what does the software really provide that other (3rd party) developers couldn’t solve using Apple Health data fed from numerous devices? Does anyone know of other Apps which access HealthKit and offers similar insights?
Athlytics in combination with Autosleep for example. I had gotten Autosleep and use the Oura4 now. Oura is way more accurate than the Apple Watch though for me when it comes to sleep. I wear a snug fit on my non dominant‘s hands index finger. I also love my Apple Watch though for other reasons. Oura is just filling lots of AWs gaps, they are a great match.
Good video @TheQuantifiedScientist. I find myself quite puzzled, as I’ve been wearing two Oura 4 rings-one on my ring finger and the other on my index finger-on the same hand every night for the past two months. Despite this consistent setup, I’ve noticed significant differences in the readiness and sleep scores they provide every single morning. Has anyone else experienced this or have any insights about why this might be happening?
@@lucas1.618 I understand that, but I don’t believe the differences should be so significant for the same user. Without the index finger ring, I wouldn’t have realized just how inaccurate the other one is-and this would apply to anyone not wearing it on their index finger.
I can’t imagine upgrading to gen 4 even if my gen 3 battery was failing due to the build quality issues of gen 4. So many gen 4 rings have come a part because of that plastic piece in the middle,of the ring.
Out of interest have you looked at the ultrahuman Air ring devices as was looking to compare it to the oura (especially as its marketed towards sleep/recovery)
Was waiting for this. I think I will give the Sleep squared app a chance. The price has dropped a little and its an attractive choice compared to the 400 euro oura 4.

Why didn't you review the Ultrahuman ring air yet? 🤔
That’s still in the planned list
Eagerly waiting for your your in depth review on the ULTRAHUMAN RING AIR, I hope you have it with you to start testing 😅@@TheQuantifiedScientist

Danke für Deine grandiose Arbeit! Gibt es ein Test von der **Huawei Watch 2D?**
Thanks a lot for your reviews ! Are you gonna try the Fenix 8 ? Cheers !
Hi Thomas! You might have seen that it’s already out ☺️
@ yes I did ! 😊 Thanks a lot for anticipating my needs
My concerns are mainly related to:
Ultrahuman accuracy;
Ultrahuman algorithms reliability.
Thank you! 🙏
Hi, thank you for the review. Did you also test the body temperature function?
Hi Anneloes, nee die heb ik nog niet getest. Ik moet kijken of ik daar een goede test setup voor kan bedenken :-)
Which products are next on the agenda for review ?
Garmin Fenix 8, Apple Watch 10, Garmin Enduro, COROS Vertix 2s, Amazfit Helio
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Under your previous video you have also mentioned a retest of latest Galaxy Watches :) This would be very interesting to see if they improved with updates.
For the spinning sessions, I think the first one was so inaccurate due to the sensors. I have a feeling the sensors were on the top of your finger and then created a gap in between your finger and the sensor when you gripped the handle bars. Then halfway through, I bet the ring flipped around and made full contact with your skin. I’d be curious to see how it tested without holding the handlebars on the indoor cycle
What do you think of the ultra humam ring?
Index finger should be more accurate. They recommend it, I believe.
@@lucas1.618 I understand that, but I don’t believe the differences should be so significant for the same user. Without the index finger ring, I wouldn’t have realized just how inaccurate the other one is-and this would apply to anyone not wearing it on their index finger.
Wow great job. I’m just surprised you were able to strap a polar H10 on and sleep throughout the night with it on for 8 hrs
I can’t imagine upgrading to gen 4 even if my gen 3 battery was failing due to the build quality issues of gen 4. So many gen 4 rings have come a part because of that plastic piece in the middle,of the ring.
Great job, appreciate the effort!
Here is a comment for the referencing
My guess is the ring would function better for a heart rate tracking when on the thumb.
Out of interest have you looked at the ultrahuman Air ring devices as was looking to compare it to the oura (especially as its marketed towards sleep/recovery)
Please test the UltraHuman Ring Air!
Hello, would you be able to review the Ultrahuman Air ring?
Can you also review the ultrahuman air ring?
Was waiting for this. I think I will give the Sleep squared app a chance. The price has dropped a little and its an attractive choice compared to the 400 euro oura 4.
So what's the better smartring for heart rate and blood pressure mesures in low and mid-price ranges?
