  • This episode marks a new chapter in the Tank Talk Podcast. Today John welcomes Jason Adams as the new Tank Talk co-host. From this point moving forward each episode will feature John and Jason discussing all things aquariums.
The thing that makes this partnership particularly special is the fact that bringing in a co-host opens the door to so many opportunities. Now topics can be covered that John might not have been confident talking about can go to Jason.
Between the two of us we have over 60 years of experience in the fish keeping hobby. I don't think they'll be a dull moment!

Newbie to the hobby here, Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 UK. Mid thirties, full time parent. Theres never a bad time to start, right!
Just finished my second tank; 29 (US) gallons. Hatchetfish, black, standard & green neons, khuli loach, false julii corys & electric blue ram. It's thanks to you guys (and others) who have really helped me learn all about the hobby and have enabled me to plan, start and build up a tank with no catastrophes or casualties. Looking forward to learning so much more. Thanks for sharing 👍🐠

It's funny Professor mentioned red tailed shark. My dad kept fish in the late 70s early 80s. He had a 29 gallon, 20 gallon and I'm going to say a 5 gallon (for babies). The 29 gallon was his community tank. The LFS sold him a red tailed shark for his community tank. Slowly but surely his fish started disappearing. During the day, he would be hiding in the back corner next to the heater. When the lights went off though. It must've been on the hunt. The first to disappear were the Neon Tetras. Lol but I was maybe 5 years old at the time. Kept aquariums off and on since then. Love my fish.

I started w/ a goldfish in a bowl before age-10, thanks to parents who had some hobby-exp. in the 70’s. That goldfish went from bowl-to-aquarium-to-backyard pond over her 15-odd years! Her aquarium transitioned into various community tanks w/ only one-break in 30-years while I was married (where we did reptiles & inverts). After the divorce, I still have one herp & a few inverts, but four beautiful, live-planted tanks.
My son’s turn came when he threw a ping-pong ball at the OH-State Fair 4 years-ago. Now he has a 50G-aquarium in his bedroom w/ his goldfish, Carnie (& two friends).
LOVE the new podcast, love listening to you two (I can never fall asleep during either of your videos), but you don’t live halfway across the country, do you? East Coast and Midwest…? 😉

Love the podcast. Listening how you got into fish keeping was a lot of fun. I got into it because of my dad. He and a friend bought 150 fish tanks for $150 back in 1980. My dad would reseal some of the tanks then sell them for 10 times what he paid for them. After a while he started to set them up and I started to take an interest. With free childhood labor five tanks became 14. I remember every tank and how much fun it was found this with my dad. Probably why I am still in the hobby.
    Keep up the good work.

Or are you looking for any questions we might have (like what can I put in a 29 gallon or how many oscars can fit into a 40 breeder)? Enjoyed the podcast. A question I have that I'd love to hear your thoughts on is concerning fish being sent as one-sex only. A few years ago, I bought Odessa barbs and all of them were males only to find out that the shop has never seen females. (More recently I have noticed, however, female Odessas are more commonly sent.) I had to special order females from Greg Sage. Other fish will often arrive from certain sources whereby the more beautiful males have already been picked out. The juvies that we receive are many times with the idea that there's going to be both sexes only to find out later that they were all females. Others gate-keep and do not sell females because they don't want anyone else to be able to propagate their line-bred fish. I'd like to hear some of your thoughts on this since it appears that you are importing fish and probably have some experience with it. #fishfam

HELLO THERE. Just suscribed to the chanel. Question for kg t. and the professor: I have an acuarium in Patagonia -Argentina and i sell quite a few fish monthly. I do not have or care for big fish, like arowana or oscars (astronotus). I did when i was starting, you know, i had a few astronotus for sale in a 10 galons acuarium, and a few convict cichlids that are still alive and doing well arround the town (and beyond). But as you know oscar (astronotus), and large cichlids or large fish need space, and my clients list do not have the right acuarium size for them; and I really love them, but I do not have large fish becouse i am an honest seller and I do thell them: this fish get's massive, and that mostly ends up the matter, and the bussines: beeing honest meant that I can keep this fish for sale.
My question is: how do you manegge this in your professional selling busines? do you just sell the fish to humever? Becouse I can be as honest as you can imagine, but I also have a busines to atend to. And it seams to be also wrong to say to some one: no I will not sel this to you!
Becouse of that question I do not bring those fish (anny large ones). And it's kind of sad. I do sell small cichlids (nano ones) and senegalus bichir's or Angel's fish, and others that size (that's big, but not big big).
Thank you. I will see your videos. Good luck whit the chaneel!!!!!!!!

Great question - I (Jason) do not sell large fish either because there are so few people who can care for them long term. If I did I simply wouldn't sell them to people who I know don't have the proper set up. For me it's ultimately about providing the fish and the people the greatest chance for long term success.
