Thanks for the excellent video, it's a nice bridge between the Chilton's manual and actually doing it. Being a DIY type guy and nothing more this helped me replace the bad td04 on my forester xt.
My last vehicle had that engine which had that turbo design flaw. The turbo will last if you change the oil every 3000 miles using synthetic oil and replace the banjo bolt every 30K which adds quite a bit to the cost of maintenance.
Thanks for this video. Just ordered a replacement and will attempt soon. What size crush washers do I need? The turbo I ordered isn't coming with them, and I've not had a ton of luck googling for the answer.
how to you get the bolts off that go into the exhaust manifold? have sued wrenches but it’s so close to the turbo they just want get on there good enough, and the wastegate is in the way of putting a socket in there with an extension. really need an answer at this point
This looks SCARY complex! I just changed the v/c gaskets and now I have an oil leak on the passenger side that wasnt there, as far as I know, before. Im getting oil on the passenger side anti roll bar and the control arm. Im hoping its the half moons I didnt touch when I did the v/c gaskets
Do you need to replace the water (coolant) pipes/bolts when you put in the new turbo? I am looking at a kit that offers these separately, not sure if I can confidently re-use the OEM parts...
I would say you should remove it or replace it every 60k miles. I have a friend who went through 3 turbos in 2 years on her 05 OBXT because the repair shop did not service the banjo bolts.
did you have to remove the downpipe or loosen it up? or did you only remove it from the back of the turbo? I'll be replacing my turbo pretty soon. thanks
+Walter Talledo you have to loosen the exhaust as described in the video. The exhaust hooks up to the back of the turbo and after loosening and removing those bolts/nuts you'll have to loosen the bracket underneath the car.
+CMotorTech thanks for replying. I already replace the turbo in my car and it was a pain in the a**. specially to get the oil return pipe of the turbo to go inside that hose that you can only see from the top of the car looking down. I dont want to mess with the turbo again. I hope.
hi, I found a VF40 turbocharger for my 05 outback on ebay for only $219, is this price buying a good product? or should I spend more for a quality item? I didn't see anything about specific brands
I am in the same boat. I bought a reman one from ebay. It was a OEM IHI part that was remanufactured. It blew in 70km. I am now looking at a rotormaster. They are made near me in Canada.
@@qaisersheikh2712 I pulled out the reman one that broke in 60KM. I bought a new rotomaster and had it fitted. I had no issues ever since then. I would recommend.
@@qaisersheikh2712 My banjo bolts we already removed. the turbo was great. I was not looking for improved HP I just wanted my car to work. I am super happy.
best turbo replacement on youtube

You covered some valuable points in this demonstration no one else has covered. Thank you for that!

I did a filter delete 😆
Much appreciation for this video. Great sound and visuals as well as narration.

Do you need to flush out coolant to do this job
So would you recommend complete removal of the banjo bolt filters or replacing with new?
Completely remove them. You have an oil filter that can filter the rest.

Would that connecting to the inlet tube at the end have been easier with the intake manifold removed?
how do you diagnose if your turbo is shot/ruined? "seat of your pants" diagnosis when it performs poorly?
What's your opinion of completely discarding the filters inside the union bolt/s?
I believe the TSB from Subaru says to remove them.
It might be easier taking the intake manifold off to do anything with that air intake duct.
What’s the part number for that intake hose that was ripped?
Does anybody know if that banjo bolt screen is present in the newer (2015) Subaru turbos?
Do you need to replace the water (coolant) pipes/bolts when you put in the new turbo? I am looking at a kit that offers these separately, not sure if I can confidently re-use the OEM parts...
The bulletin says only remove union screens for 2004 cars n earlier. Leave the turbo banjo bolt screen just Ck it frequently

Great video. Thanks for the information!
So I'm guessing you drained the coolant and oil first?
Yes to coolant draining. We did an oil change after everything was reassembled.
Thank you. I'm preparing to change out my blown stock and put in a BNR 16G in within the next week.
the over flow oil tube is hard to put on!! how can i put it on after i put turbo in?
where did u get the new turbo from?
i need to replace the turbo on mine pretty soon.
ebay is a good place to get turbos from , I got a gt30r from there for my impreza

Michael Robinson oh dope! Did you replace the oil feed line? I might do that and also remove banjo bolts

Work on 2.0 l 2000 model ?
You need to check the focus!
Poor subaru engineering regarding the screen on the banjo bolt
This video, while informative, shows you how to do literally nothing.
Agreed!
