It's Eve more amazing when you consider that Stanley Kubrick would run the actors through the same scenes again and again to the point of almost having a genuine mental breakdown before rolling the cameras... They may be only half acting at this point...

@@johndowney8774 well if he was constantly looking at the camera, that would ruin the movie. thats the whole point. its kinda how the human brain works. you'll notice that he looked at the camera multiple times but not be able to process it because of how quick it was --- it makes it seem like hes conscious that hes in the movie WITHOUT looking at the camera constantly. it gives HINTS about it without giving it away straight up. if he were to constantly look at the camera, the viewers would just be like "ok this is bad acting." they'd be right. the viewer would feel like theyre acting, which isnt what theyre going for. obviously. it has to be subtle to leave a real effect. "less is more," sometimes. it applies to this.

It may be that looking at the camera from time to time reminds him that he's just acting or that this is temporary. I heard they kept Shelly & Jack apart during filming to keep the tension level high. So there was no way to come back to the reality of who they were in real life, friends, or friendly at least, and they had to exist in the characters' trauma or insanity and the threat of violence. I also heard Shelly Duvall had to "go away" for several months after filming to calm down and relax because it fkd her up. As it would.
(Where did I hear this? My dad told me. When I was 8 or 9 yrs old. He loved to watch that movie w his friends late at night when they were drinking. I could hear the opening music in my room; I wasn't allowed to watch it, too young, but the music used to scare me to tears.)

Actually I do know why this happens because Stanley Kubrick is either operating the camera hand held or right next to the camera and would be in jacks eyeline and sometimes would make directing adjustments on the fly. If you watched the behind the scenes or the documentary about him that’s something he used to do a lot.

This is often said, and for the most part it’s probably true. In this case (Jack looking at the camera) I don’t think there’s any evidence whatsoever of it being anything other than a minor habit of Jack Nicholson, which is minor enough to be ignored and (inadvertently) added a little something to the film.
