I have the Gen 1, revision 2 in 5.56 and it's been a solid performer that exceeded my expectations. Ruger did a good job with this series. Now if only they would produce the 308 variant with SR25 mags instead of AI mags. I would pick that up in a heartbeat.
I had the same exact issue with my Ruger- problems with the mag. Did the same thing you did and went with dedicated 300 BLK ones and nary a problem since. I hope they are paying attention and make some switches - people might start assuming they have a bad gun instead of just a bad magazine.
Solid content, Ben. The Gen II in .300blk, shooting 150gr BTSP, has become my go to hunting rifle for Whitetail in VT, NH, NY. It's ballistically comparable to a 30-30 out of a 20" barrel however, unlike a 30-30, I get a wider array of bullet types, the rifle takes my AR-15 mags (I hunt with 5 round mags), and it is legally permissable wherever I travel. Not to mention that fully loaded with a 1-4 Sig Tango 4T, weighs 7.4 lbs.
Well yeah, its a 223 mag. 300 BLK fits, but has a different shape, especially with heavy subs. Some mag designs don't work as well with them. Thats why magpul and lancer make 300 BLK mags.
As a college student looking to buy my own firearm (I’ve shot ARs and shotguns plenty), this looks like a nice option to get into shooting without dropping a grand on a good entry level AR15
Nice scrim, doing a complete diy/natural one myself. Strip green trees like string cheese for easy wood texture, line up along the body to recreate a fallen tree limb.
I (6’ 1” 180 lbs) hunt whitetail mostly with with an 18” .308, my wife (5’ 7” 130 lbs) hunts them exclusively with a 16” 300 BLK. Both bolt guns, I reload for both, 110 TTSX Barnes for her, 150 TTSX for me. Deer inside 175yds really can’t tell the difference… The enhanced shoot-ability of the 300 BLK should not be underestimated for smaller framed/younger shooters. My wife is a very experienced shooter, and ‘can’ shoot anything I do, and very well… but she is extremely confident and comfortable behind her 300 BLK (Ruger American Ranch but in Magpul stock). Know and recognize its limitations of course, but it can be very strong deer medicine… NOTE: 10 rd Lancer 300 BLK mags are the way to go… great video sir. Subbed.
I was looking at both of these you have the 300 and 308, I love the fun range toy aspect of the 300 whilst still being able to use it for closer range whitetail. But figured the 308 was overall a better option. Any input on which you would recommend since you own both?
Honestly, the only pro the .308 has over the .300 BLK for hunting whitetails at reasonable distances (other than my nostalgia because it was my first rifle…) is the price and availability of premium hunting loads from the factory. It’s a stouter round obviously, especially with heavies, but if you really care about that get a 30-06 or 300WSM. If I could only have 1 of these and I was only taking whitetails, I’d keep the .300 BLK and keep reloading the 110s for hunting and the 220s for amazing suppression and range fun. For anything longer, where I know I could be out past 200 yds, I take a 6.5 PRC. In my safe, the 308 is a real tweener. If I could only keep 3 calibers for hunting, it’d be my wife’s .300 BLK, my 6.5 PRC, and my 300WSM. Absolutely zero gaps in that lineup for anything in North America and an absolutely joy to reload across the board in small, lightweight, easy to manage rifles.
I actually wouldn’t. Right now it’s an inexpensive but very functional platform. I don’t think throwing more money at it would make that much of a difference.
Awesome looking gun. Anyone know of a way to have a clip on nvg or thermal optic mounted infront of the scope for this gun? Maybe some sorta attachment that works with the bipod attachment point would work without flexing the barrel?
Sounds like the Ruger packing/shipping technician made a mag mistake when boxing up the order. I have the rifle in 5.56 and have only run 223 from it. Awesome rifle. It’s my favorite
@@wisemencompanyhopefully it turns into a product. I am looking for a quality replacement to the hill people gear offering. I would like something more modular which that appears to be.
@@kahhrismaI love me some HPG. An alternative to the Kit Bag I’ve used is a Spiritus MKV placard with a CCS pouch on it. You can also add the AXL zipper inserts on the MKV for more storage. I’ve used a full length insert and a half length allowing me to have a single mag insert.
@stonefox9124 sounds like you don't have one. A 300blk bolt action is significantly quieter and will be more accurate than a comparable priced upper. I haven't shot my 300blk AR at all since I bought my 300 bolt
I was thinking maybe lowering the rifle while cycling the bolt has some kind of speed advantage that offsets repeatedly losing and reacquiring your sight picture.
Why not keep the gun on your shoulder when firing standing up? It would be faster. Lowering the gun ever time looked cumbersome and slower. Overall good video though.
@@jdogtotherescue The technically fit, but they are sticky and don't load flawlessly and jam more often than just getting the magpul mags for 300blk. I use Taran tactical floor plates to help distinguish between the 300blk mags and the normal 5.56 mags.
Less moving parts = higher reliability and easier cleaning. Fun to use the bolt and if you disagree you’re weird. Quieter than a semi with a suppressor. Bolt actions arnt constantly on the talk of being banned my the gov and arnt “military assault weapons” in the eyes of idiots. And an easier gun to have and explain to use for hunting and everyday purposes to the same idiots
The silencer tells me one thing, FED BOY. How much does that I love the FEDS Silencer cost but I love the 2nd too which one did I chose, well he has a Silencer enough said.
I follow a lot of 2A content. Probably one of the most pragmatic firearm for citizens out there, along with the AR.
It does make a lot of sense.
The AR platform
Ruger 10/22
Ruger American Ranch
Glocks
all seem to be staples in American firearms.
@@wildcat8598can't forget about the Remington 700 too
Ruger mini iykyk 😎
The new Gen 2s of the American are super solid.

Seems like a lot of folks want 308.
You can still get the aics mags which they aren’t bad but yea a 20 round ar 10 mag would be dope
I've got 3 boys and I think this would be the perfect starter rifle for them as well a force multiplier
For sure.
Yes!

This rifle looks great! Thanks for sharing the build!
Just such a solid around the ranch type deal. Need to get one for my daughters.
Right on

Really interested in the 308 version of this. Sweet looking set up and good info on it.

I just ordered one today in 223 (I'm not a deer hunter), never having owned a bolt rifle (imagine?). Time to figure out an optic. Thanks!
Magpul makes a good stock. Heavier but solid..
300 Blackouts
This is a dope project I like it!
Thanks. Turned out good.
Great bolt option. I, too, also like to run “just the tip.” 😎

Starting off your response time was slow but, I like how fast you regained position and got it under control.

My gen 1 in 762x39 is a solid deer rifle under 300 yards
300 mags are the way to go.The mag that came with mine sucked too.
sick build
As cool as it is, an accurate AR is always a better option. You can build a 1 moa or less AR for less than a grand.
I forgot they offered these in Grendel 🤔
Yeah that would be a solid combo.
Also in ARC
Would you change out the stock? If so, what would you change it for.
I actually wouldn’t. Right now it’s an inexpensive but very functional platform. I don’t think throwing more money at it would make that much of a difference.
Got one in 5.56 and put it in a Magpul stock. Like it a lot.
Magpul for sure
God it's crazy how much rattle can, can make me want a product.
This looks glorious, but is a sub $1k gun and I love it.

Something like a heatseaker chassis or an extended rail. Would look wierd but something like the larue/BCM optic rails might work

So do you think there is any advantage to buying a stand alone .300 blkout rifle vs. just buying an upper for an AR?
A bolt action in this cal is dumb... It's range there is no point in a bolt action and scope...
It’s more quiet than a gas gun and there’s no gas block you have to adjust when going suppressed and subsonic.

More effectively suppressed as there is no port pop. Bolt actions are inherently more accurate. I don't think you do a lot of shooting.
