I love my Gen II in .300blk. It is a great general purpose rifle. I ended up putting a PA SLx 1-6 7.62x39/.300blk Raptor reticle on it, and have been able to get consistent hits out to 300-400 yards (wind notwithstanding). Something I also really want to touch on, though, is how valuable a "legal" rifle is. I live in Vermont, but my entire family is from the Finger Lakes area of New York. For those times when I go home to hunt, help around house, etc., I'll usually toss this rifle in my truck. It's great having a short, handy, rifle that accepts stanag mags, and won't get me slapped with a felony.
My Gen 1 and similar .22 constantly have the bolts opening in the field and seeding freedom throughout the countryside especially if you carry over the left shoulder--which is an unpleasant surprise when you quickly shoulder to take game. The 3-point safety is a welcome change.
Ruger built this in as a sustainability feature. Those freedom seeds will soon become saplings and ultimately freedom trees from which you can harvest ammo for generations to come. Patience my friend.
You 🫵 gotta watch out with a paddle mag release too. It'll drop a mag while slinged. This isn't a bench queen it's ready for combat especially with a RMR for CQB 😂

Love the review. I grabbed one of these and in the planning stages of tinkering. Do you feel the best optic is an LPVO for the carbine purpose? I’m trying various optics to see how they handle. Considering the Helos 2-12 or any 1-6. I feel size and weight will make a difference on how it feels running the gun.
I bought a tc compass in 2018 when they had the rebate for $170. You can't beat that deal for a cheap bolt action. Wouldn't mind a ruger american ranch in 300blk.
Just found your channel, and glad I did! Could I make a request? Athlon has an AR "Tactical" cantilever scope mount that is "designed and manufactured in the USA". Retails for about $130 for a 34mm 20MOA cant. It looks OK for the price, but it doesn't list what type of aluminum it uses (just "aircraft grade") and I haven't seen any pictures of the locking lugs. Your review would be invaluable to see if it's a viable "cheap" option for something made in the USA.
I have a gen 1 in 300blk that I absolutely love. I have mine topped off with a 1-8 trijicon and a DDC enticer Ti-L. The only thing it really needs is a good cheek rest, and one of these days I'll get around to calling ruger and buying one of their gen 2 stocks. Mine REALLY likes 220 makers subs over lil' gun, I'm getting 1/2" groups at 100 yards. I am hoping Ruger will eventually make a 338 ARC ranch rifle, but with a non fluted barrel. I want one to SBR.
the gen 2 bolt handle is threaded so you can just swap it out with a larger one no mods required the gen 2 trigger will fit in the gen 1 but is not compatible with the gen 1 bolt because there is a small cut in the back of the bolt where the extra safety moves around it you can see the cut if you look at the black plastic cap on the underside of the bolt
I have this exact same gun, the only thing i'd say it still sucking is the action, it is not smooth at all and still ways to go until it catches up to the likes of Tikka. But accuracy is good through, get my sub MOA using AAC 75gr OTM, hit a 1 MOA target at 550 yards with wind using 55gr reman ammo. The stock is so much better than Gen 1.
I’ve got one…it’s accurate. I don’t like the stock. It’s functional but my Gen2 and Gen1 both have the stock nearly touch the barrel on the right side. It’s almost like Ruger has a crap molding process. I’ll probably get a lightweight chassis for them and go with the Sig folding Stock. I’m not a fan of the AR buffer tube and collapsing butt stock (it’s just awkward looking). Not a fan of the AR mag…doesn’t always cycle correctly. Other than those minor issues, I like mine.
I read where there were only 75 Gen II’s made chambered in 300 Blackout. I’m not positive that info I read is 100% accurate but I believe it to be true, No wander they’re damn near impossible to find now! If thats true, Did Ruger grossly underestimate the 300 Blackout market?

The spiral fluting has no place on a “ranch” rifle imo. To me a ranch rifle is a gun that can live in a quad, in the back of a pickup, or even in a wheelbarrow on a farm. The fluting is an extra place for dust, dirt and mud to get in. Now you have to get in every groove individually.
Wow. This was an absurd post. You do know the barrel is finished in Cerakote? Do you know what Cerakote does? Fluting can be put on any length barrel. Fluting increases the surface area of the barrel so that more heat dissipates at a more rapid rate. Spiral Fluting further increases this benefit due to the fact that the shortest distance between two points is not a spiral. Spiral fluting creates more surface area compared to straight line fluting. Thus, spiral fluting maximizes barrel cooling. I rest my case.
Your case sucks and does not address the point. As a person who spends a lot of time around the corrals, he's exactly correct. I blow my Mini 14 off with compressed air every morning, clean it once a month or so. It cycles all the cheap Russian ammo you want. The AR platform sucks in my World, too.
These guns absolutely need the Magpul stock. It's so much better, including the paddle mag release, that yes, it works with AR mags. Ruger needs to offer, at least for the ranch models, Magpul stock options for these rifles.
Instagram? I, for sure like my 6.5 Grendel gen 1. I bought an MDT LSS-XL gen 2 for it. Up here, I didnt had access to any factory ammo (I should have bought one in 556...). So, I have to reload. Lapua brass, lapua scenar 123gn, IMR4895 and sellier&bellot small primer. This thing print 0.75-0.8 inch groups at 100m ( yeah, I am fluent in both metric and retard unit 😛). But, the bolt have an issue, I can remove it without pressing the release button if I push up and rotate left when the bolt is all the way back... I need to figure this out.
Gen One was a joke…The bolt was so poorly/roughly machined it made noise when getting slid into battery. The stock reveled the cardboard paper towel center. Some people are interested in polishing a turd. Ammo is to expensive and life is to short waste them both.
