  • In today's video we're back on with the MK2 Golf, tackling a sill rust repair. The section we're going to be welding is where the A-post meets the sill and it's really common on the MK2 Golfs for these sections to rot out.

    It's good to see UK people taking on this kind of work to a high standard rather than American cars all the time, got my own mk2 in the garage needing alot of work, just not long finished my mates mk3 vr6 as well proper rot box i repaired almost the whole inner and outer cills as well as inner and outer rear arches and then some lol , and believe it or not a m4 gti that had been poorly crash repaired years before

    Wish you had more rust on your mk2 so i could try to copy your work :D I have to replace sills, floor pans, jacking points and I dont even know how to weld yet. A bit overwhelming for a noob like me but videos like these are very motivating. Glad i found this channel!

      Thanks very much the comment! Replacing panels is not too bad once you've had a bit of practice, key is to take your time, get the hang of how your welder works before starting on your car and make sure the panels are lined up properly. Hope that helps and good luck with the project!👍😀

    I learned so much from finishing/dressing welds from your videos. Enough so that the finger sander is my new favorite tool. Glad you took some extra time to show more of your process.

      Thanks for the comment! Yeah agreed, people don't want to pay for a proper job, main reason we stopped taking on welding work for other people and just do the panels now

    Hi from New Zealand, great job man. My hack for helping to reduce the wax from contaminating your weld is to use a heat gun to heat up the area nice and hot to allow wax to melt on the inside before you weld.

    Followed you on Facebook for a while and just started watching your videos, great work and good to watch 👍 didn’t realise you were based fairly close to me, I’ll definitely be hitting you up in future for some work done on my civic, it’s a little bit of a patchwork on the sills so would like it done properly in future before a respray

      @@RotboxMetalworks yep, the repair panels on Allie's were formed using Kellogg's finest, luckily (so far) my white one just needed one patch oddly in lower door skin.

    That take? About an hour or two ?

    Great work-What type of welder do you use and at what setting?I recently got a mig/gas welder and tried to weld a panel on my Mk2 but on the low setting it doesn’t seem to weld it properly but then on the next setting up it blows holes In it?Any tips?Cheers

      Cheers for the comment! I haven't found a primer that works any better than the others as long as it's a name brand should be ok, unless anyone else has a better recommendation. Someone asked about primer in the last video too and I said just don't put it on too thick as I've found it doesn't work as well. We don't have many MK2 golf videos yet, should be more to come 👍😀

    • @RotboxMetalworks
      @RotboxMetalworks  3 года назад

      The MK1 caddy is on hold because we need to save money to buy parts to finish it, we put a post on our community tab about it asking if our audience wanted us to stop making videos or post other projects that we had, the majority that responded wanted us to keep making videos, so here we are! Car projects are expensive to do to a high standard (something that doesn't really get talked about a lot on RUclips) and we don't want to cut corners with it. If you want to help us out liking, commenting and sharing our videos really helps us with the algorithm! Or if you can afford to consider buying something off our website- new merch is dropping soon ;)
