That was a really nice test. The results were as expected. Out of 59 pieces of surviving plate armour from mid 14th Century to early 15th Century, only 7 were made of hardened steel. That's 11.86%. And all those were slack-quenced, not full quenched.
But remember every citizen hat armor every mercenary had armor knightly armor isn't the majority. So most knight armors were hardened. Nontheless yes it's higher quality armor.
The majority of the hardened armour would probably have been in the possession of knights, but there is no evidence of for this in this period, nor that most knight's armour was hardened. If you have any, please let me know. Knights made up only 10% +/- of all the men-at-arms. For the rest of the readers, that would be mounted combatants in full plate amour trained to fight mounted with a lance on a horse trained for the purpose. Of all those 59 pieces of armour Alan Williams have tested, 25 were bascinets, the vast majority with hinges for a visor, 6 were great helmets, 3 were armets, 1 was a barbute, 7 were visors, 1 was a jousting helm, 4 were breastplates, 2 were coat-of-plates, 2 were vambraces, 3 were gauntlets and last we have 1 greave, spaulder, fauld, shaffron and backplate. In other words, the vast majority is armour for men-at-arms and knights. Some of these have decorations and others we know the provenance of, so we know they were high status armour.

However, the fracture toughness with a DENT test varies by grade from just around 300 down to 220 kJ/m2 for the lowest grade of mild steel, depending on alloying elements and carbon. Medieval bloomery steel goes from 212 and down to 180 kJ/m2. Not even the lowest grade of modern mild steel is therefore comparable to the best medieval bloomery steel. 200 years old wrought iron from the industrial revolution with 1.8% slag perform well when it is laminated. Most medieval plates made of wrought iron have more slag than this, so the performance would be worse. When modern wrought iron with 1.8-1.84% slag is laminated, the fracture toughness is 228-229 kJ/m2, the same as AISI 1010 mild steel. When medieval wrought iron is laminated the fracture toughness is from 170 to 210 kJ/m2, depending on slag inclusions. 210 kJ/m2 would be an outlier and does not represent the average. 64.4 % of the surviving armour I mentioned is either wrought iron or bloomery steel. A realistic test involving modern steel would require annealed AISI 1005 steel, and even then it would be an outlier. So if a medieval piece of armour have a fracture toughness of 180 kJ/m2, while a modern test piece of mild steel have a fracture toughness of 300 kJ/m2, the difference would be an increase of 66% (300/180 = 1.66). In other words, if we assume that it will take 80 Joules to penetrated a thin plate with a fracture toughness of 180 kJ/m2, it would take 132.8 Joules to penetrate the plate with a fracture toughness of 300 kJ/m2. That's a problem if the arrow strikes with 115 Joules. There are grades of modern mild steel with 0.2% carbon with a fracture toughness just under 300 kJ/m2 due to alloying elements. With some cold working this will increase to just over 300 kJ/m2. Modern mild steel is a terrible analog for medieval bloomery steel.

-Plate armor was not generally used with gambeson. A more accurate test would be to use a arming doublet, gambeson is to bulky for that. -A 160lbs longbow may be more powerful than a 600lbs crossbow but a 960lbs has a almost equal energy and momentum, in a test made by Tod’s Workshop, a 1500lbs crossbow could have more power than a longbow. @@dequitemWearing plate arms especially like the ones shown here couldn't be attached without an arming doublet. And looking at 15th century sources, any cuirass without arm protection is fine with a gambeson but whn you add the arms you'd certainly be wearing a arming doublet.
The 160lbs war bow is probably not more powerful than 600lbs composite crossbow. Composite crossbows store and release energy much more efficiently than steel crossbows of similar draw weight

Stopping horses is actually a lot harder than a lot of people might think. By the 15th century, not only were their vitals decently well armored, but they’re big animals, and no where near as skittish as modern horses. The most important piece of equipment an archer had against cavalry were their stakes. Without those, they didn’t stand much of a chance against a charge, if any.
Hate to be a devil's advocate but reports from battles, even in the 100 years war, describe entire cavalry charges by the French forced to continue the charge on foot due to waves and waves of barbed and needletip bodkin arrows wounding or killing their horses. Horses were generally much more vulnerable to warbow arrows than fully armoured knights, but then again so were men-at-arms in chainmail...
@@EuTrabalhoParaSagres510there’s also many, many accounts of knights riding straight through arrows and the charge not breaking. Vernuil and Patay are two such battles where the British couldn’t prepare defensive positions, and in both their archers were charged without issue. Granted, those were later battles in the 15th century rather than 14th, but most of the times French knights were forced to dismount, it was because they needed to remove the stakes in their way, or the terrain wasn’t suitable for cavalry (such as muddy hills), which meant that the British could loose thousands upon thousands of more arrows at them before they could close in. Also, men-at-arms had plate armor as well by the time of battles such as agicourt, just not always as complete or high quality as the knights. There were even earlier accounts from the crusades that described knights and their horses continuing to fight despite being filled with so many arrows they were described as porcupines, despite earlier armor. One specific instance the knight himself was hit 8 times, and his horse 12, but both kept fighting and survived.

have you tried waxing the arrowheads? I remember todd doing some testing and it made a difference. he also did greased shafts and that was doubling his penetration on shields, but i forget exactly what the shield was made of. I think it's conditional on being able to penetrate at all in the first place, but it might make 1/4" into 1"
@@dashrendar5320 for sure it is. check his videos called "Does WAX on ARROW HEADS Do Anything?" and "Does a greased shaft penetrate deeper?" in both cases it made a difference for him, but it could just be what he's testing against.

A thing to consider for the crossbow vs warbow discussion is that a 165lb warbow is relatively at the top end of power, yes they can be heavier but it is certainly up there. Meanwhile a 600lb crossbow is the excat opposite, I would consider anything below 500lb to be a hunting crossbow, for a fair comparison I think a 1000-1200lb crossbow would need to be tested. Now from having seen both already myself they have similar effects on target with the bow shootign much faster but requiring more strength and skill to use.
Also to keep in mind is that composite crossbows store and release energy much more efficiently than steel bows. Throughout the hundred years war belt spanned composite crossbows would have been the most common type of crossbow. Check out Andreas Bichler who makes composite crossbows. His bows are twice as efficient as Tods bows with equal draw weight
900-1200 lb crossbows havent much more energy, scalgrim ( cant spell right ) used a windless spanned crossbow and while it could poke little holes in a cuirass it was a dead on hit The draw length prevents it from getting more than 150 joules of energy over a 165lb bow
The best way to get more performance is to use a composite bow instead of steel. Composite bows accelerate the bolt faster. From tests of ~500 pound steel and 500 pound composite bows the composite launched the bolt 15% faster which equals 50% more energy on target. Professional crossbowmen tended to use composite bows, tho steel is more convenient for mass storage.

@@hjorturerlend Steel crossbows as well as all the mechanical spanning devices that come with them is really more of a mid to late 15th century phenomena. Belt spanned composite crossbows would have been the most commonly used type of crossbow from the 13th to the 15th centuries

I would really like to see a video on combat slingshots, according to some texts the slingers were extremely precise and could sometimes be killed instantly with a well-placed shot.

I very recently bought my first brigendine sow I'm exited to see how this one is gona hold up. Also wait 1,6mm steel is extreemly thick, that explains why my fullplate ended up overbuild, cause I thaught that 1mm was way to thin. 😅 It's like 40 kilo which is bassicly still in range for tournement armor, but for war armor which was the intention it's overbuild. 🤣

Also I'm only 1,6m weighing 60 kilo's, but I'm build like a chimp, sow I can put it on myself, train with it for a half hour or more depending on how hot it is and take it off myself. It does take a hour to recover though. 😅

On a full arm harness the gauntlet would overlap with the lower canon or vambrace at the forearm Meaning that first hit probably would have been stopped.
This was so fun, loved it. I've always wondered this since i used to ride horses and if your not really hugging the saddle with your legs is pretty easy to fall off lol. So, I'm wondering with the heaviest warbow you have would it be possible to dismount a person from his horse. Easy test, you could use Bungie chords to just hook on the legs then under the saddle so it would simulate just a sitting position. But would it 1, stagger him, or 2, completely dismount him. We know how fast an arrow will go, but what about its actual impact force, is it enough to even stagger him, because even that would be impressive. I personally doubt it, but then i don't know the force that a strike would take.

You should compare the war bow with a composite crossbow rather than with a steel crossbow. Andreas Bichler makes composite crossbows twice as efficient as Tods steel bows with equal draw weight
@@dashrendar5320 There were competitions in the 14th and 15th century over who could span the most powerful crossbow with a belt and hook. Sort of like weight lifting. Unfortunately composite crossbows are not easy nor cheap to get a hold on.

Some conjecture on why the war bows performed better against armor compared to a 600 lb goat's foot crossbow: Within a system where Classical Mechanics (Newtonian, Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, ect. mechanics) remains accurate, which the projectile motions of projectile weapons fall into, we know that the final velocity of an object is given by Vfinal = Vinitial + (a)(t) where Vfinal and Vinitial are the final and initial velocities, a is acceleration, and t is time. Using Newton's Second Law, the acceleration acting on the projectile is found to be a = F/m where F is force and m is the mass of the object. Since the initial velocity of the projectile is zero meters per second and its mass constant at the time of firing, the final velocity of the projectile upon it exiting contact with the firing device is fully dependent on the forces acting on it and the length of time the forces are in effect. Since the distance the arrow has to travel to exit the war bows is greater than the distance traveled by a crossbow bolt, the length of time the bow string is in contact with the arrow is greater than that of the crossbow bolt. As a result of this, a bow will accelerate projectiles to a higher velocity than an equal pound draw crossbow that has a shorter draw length. Crossbow designers can compensate for this by increasing the draw weight so that the force exerted by the crossbow string on the bolt is greater. What this means is that a shorter draw length crossbow will not necessarily perform better against a target than a longer draw length bow even if the crossbow has a much greater draw weight. It should be mentioned that this analysis assumes that the only forces acting on the arrows/bolts is the force exerted by the weapon strings which is not true in the context of the armor tests. With that being said, the effects of gravity, air resistance, and the rotation of the Earth will be kept minimal if the weapons are fired at close range and the projectiles do not complete their trajectory.

the whole crossbow thing ist just like people are: bigger poundage = bigger damage or more speed, not thinking of the factor the the bow has way more space to accelerate the arrow and the crossbow not really. that is the reason why crossbows go to so high drawweights, because they have to compete with the velocity, or lets say the output of a bow with a lot shorter acelleration way

Serbians and Byzantines were Europeans so arrows used might have been similiar to what English and French archers used (especially in certain periods when mercenaries from these areas were present). Especially since they faced and to some degree used plate armor.

And what do you mean by Roman swords (I know that you only want to see this matchup because hurr durr Islam vs the west)? Superb test. Just a question, the 155 lb bow and arrows you used, are those the 120 gram arrows and bow that shoots them at 190+ FPS? So are we actually talking 200 joules (that is freaking lot for a longbow, but it might be due to high efficiency with heavy arrows)? Also, while during battle those arrow would be most likely shot from a distance, if they were shot against charging infantry (some 4 m/s speed) or cavalry (10-15 m/s) it would increase the energy of the arrow by at least 14% or 36-56% respectively which would more than cover for the loss of energy at the distance (roughly 15-20% loss at 100 metres with heavy arrow shot from warbow). Finally, some types of crossbows might perform better than warbows. For example 600+ pound composite or yew crossbows (they are much more efficient than steel crossbows but they require more care, are more vulnerable to weather, are less reliable and are more expensive to make) could shoot 200+ joule bolts, however they take long time to reload (cranequin etc) and are often used in teams where one or two guys reload while one guy shoots.
Yes that is the same bow. All good points, they charge and speed would help cancel out the speed differential I think. Also it’s true some crossbows could outperform as well. But it’s darned close (steel struggles for sure)

Oh dear....all the shattered arrows..... One problem is not hitting the target and the arrow goes somewhere into the undergrowth never to be seen again....the other problem is hitting the target.....^^
On crossbows. You would have to take into account that your testing was based off of one of the weakest crossbows, that probably wouldn't even be considered a war crossbow, against one of the more powerful war bows. War bow draw weights, on average ranged from 70 or 80 pounds up to 160. So 165 lb draw weight would be on the heavy side even for a war bow. On the other hand, for crossbows, hunting crossbows, not meant for war averaged from 400 lbs up to 600 lbs. War crossbows averaged anywhere from 700 lbs up to 1300 lbs. So a 165 lb war bow vs a 600 lb crossbow is comparing apples to oranges as the saying goes. you are comparing a war bow to a hunting bow. If you want a more reasonable comparison to see the real relationship, you'd need to get a 1300 lb crossbow.

So what I am trying to say use simple keyword your audience would search on youtube. The sipler you can transfer your message in thubnail and title the better look at admin CrossBow vs Warbow and compare it to yours. Like you could risk it there and go = 600lb vs 165lb is CrossBow Better? or =165lb LongBow is Stronger than 600lb CrossBow. Coplete nuts would go 165lb Englishman is stronger that 600lb Frenchman. And go on ranting how French are fat and lazy so they need crossbows LOL.

@@dequitemWearing plate arms especially like the ones shown here couldn't be attached without an arming doublet. And looking at 15th century sources, any cuirass without arm protection is fine with a gambeson but whn you add the arms you'd certainly be wearing a arming doublet.
The 160lbs war bow is probably not more powerful than 600lbs composite crossbow. Composite crossbows store and release energy much more efficiently than steel crossbows of similar draw weight

Dequitem just did a devatstating video with a bec de corbin or polehammer. The beak only was able to do proper damage against mail, not plate.

Stopping horses is actually a lot harder than a lot of people might think. By the 15th century, not only were their vitals decently well armored, but they’re big animals, and no where near as skittish as modern horses. The most important piece of equipment an archer had against cavalry were their stakes. Without those, they didn’t stand much of a chance against a charge, if any.
Very true by later centuries, they had “stoppers” on them as well but they certainly had a lot less armor covering than the knights
Hate to be a devil's advocate but reports from battles, even in the 100 years war, describe entire cavalry charges by the French forced to continue the charge on foot due to waves and waves of barbed and needletip bodkin arrows wounding or killing their horses. Horses were generally much more vulnerable to warbow arrows than fully armoured knights, but then again so were men-at-arms in chainmail...
@@EuTrabalhoParaSagres510there’s also many, many accounts of knights riding straight through arrows and the charge not breaking. Vernuil and Patay are two such battles where the British couldn’t prepare defensive positions, and in both their archers were charged without issue. Granted, those were later battles in the 15th century rather than 14th, but most of the times French knights were forced to dismount, it was because they needed to remove the stakes in their way, or the terrain wasn’t suitable for cavalry (such as muddy hills), which meant that the British could loose thousands upon thousands of more arrows at them before they could close in.
Also, men-at-arms had plate armor as well by the time of battles such as agicourt, just not always as complete or high quality as the knights.
There were even earlier accounts from the crusades that described knights and their horses continuing to fight despite being filled with so many arrows they were described as porcupines, despite earlier armor. One specific instance the knight himself was hit 8 times, and his horse 12, but both kept fighting and survived.

have you tried waxing the arrowheads? I remember todd doing some testing and it made a difference. he also did greased shafts and that was doubling his penetration on shields, but i forget exactly what the shield was made of. I think it's conditional on being able to penetrate at all in the first place, but it might make 1/4" into 1"

A thing to consider for the crossbow vs warbow discussion is that a 165lb warbow is relatively at the top end of power, yes they can be heavier but it is certainly up there.
Meanwhile a 600lb crossbow is the excat opposite, I would consider anything below 500lb to be a hunting crossbow, for a fair comparison I think a 1000-1200lb crossbow would need to be tested.
Now from having seen both already myself they have similar effects on target with the bow shootign much faster but requiring more strength and skill to use.
Also to keep in mind is that composite crossbows store and release energy much more efficiently than steel bows. Throughout the hundred years war belt spanned composite crossbows would have been the most common type of crossbow. Check out Andreas Bichler who makes composite crossbows. His bows are twice as efficient as Tods bows with equal draw weight

900-1200 lb crossbows havent much more energy, scalgrim ( cant spell right ) used a windless spanned crossbow and while it could poke little holes in a cuirass it was a dead on hit

The best way to get more performance is to use a composite bow instead of steel. Composite bows accelerate the bolt faster. From tests of ~500 pound steel and 500 pound composite bows the composite launched the bolt 15% faster which equals 50% more energy on target. Professional crossbowmen tended to use composite bows, tho steel is more convenient for mass storage.

I very recently bought my first brigendine sow I'm exited to see how this one is gona hold up. Also wait 1,6mm steel is extreemly thick, that explains why my fullplate ended up overbuild, cause I thaught that 1mm was way to thin. 😅 It's like 40 kilo which is bassicly still in range for tournement armor, but for war armor which was the intention it's overbuild. 🤣

Also I'm only 1,6m weighing 60 kilo's, but I'm build like a chimp, sow I can put it on myself, train with it for a half hour or more depending on how hot it is and take it off myself. It does take a hour to recover though. 😅
The speed of the arrow is more important than the bows poundage because not all bows are efficient and some are slowed down by overly heavy limb tips.

This was so fun, loved it. I've always wondered this since i used to ride horses and if your not really hugging the saddle with your legs is pretty easy to fall off lol. So, I'm wondering with the heaviest warbow you have would it be possible to dismount a person from his horse. Easy test, you could use Bungie chords to just hook on the legs then under the saddle so it would simulate just a sitting position. But would it 1, stagger him, or 2, completely dismount him. We know how fast an arrow will go, but what about its actual impact force, is it enough to even stagger him, because even that would be impressive. I personally doubt it, but then i don't know the force that a strike would take.

@@dashrendar5320 There were competitions in the 14th and 15th century over who could span the most powerful crossbow with a belt and hook. Sort of like weight lifting. Unfortunately composite crossbows are not easy nor cheap to get a hold on.

It does almost look that way, it just happened so immediately on impact and it was such a straight shot that it just obliterated
Some conjecture on why the war bows performed better against armor compared to a 600 lb goat's foot crossbow: Within a system where Classical Mechanics (Newtonian, Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, ect. mechanics) remains accurate, which the projectile motions of projectile weapons fall into, we know that the final velocity of an object is given by Vfinal = Vinitial + (a)(t) where Vfinal and Vinitial are the final and initial velocities, a is acceleration, and t is time. Using Newton's Second Law, the acceleration acting on the projectile is found to be a = F/m where F is force and m is the mass of the object. Since the initial velocity of the projectile is zero meters per second and its mass constant at the time of firing, the final velocity of the projectile upon it exiting contact with the firing device is fully dependent on the forces acting on it and the length of time the forces are in effect. Since the distance the arrow has to travel to exit the war bows is greater than the distance traveled by a crossbow bolt, the length of time the bow string is in contact with the arrow is greater than that of the crossbow bolt. As a result of this, a bow will accelerate projectiles to a higher velocity than an equal pound draw crossbow that has a shorter draw length. Crossbow designers can compensate for this by increasing the draw weight so that the force exerted by the crossbow string on the bolt is greater. What this means is that a shorter draw length crossbow will not necessarily perform better against a target than a longer draw length bow even if the crossbow has a much greater draw weight. It should be mentioned that this analysis assumes that the only forces acting on the arrows/bolts is the force exerted by the weapon strings which is not true in the context of the armor tests. With that being said, the effects of gravity, air resistance, and the rotation of the Earth will be kept minimal if the weapons are fired at close range and the projectiles do not complete their trajectory.

the whole crossbow thing ist just like people are: bigger poundage = bigger damage or more speed, not thinking of the factor the the bow has way more space to accelerate the arrow and the crossbow not really. that is the reason why crossbows go to so high drawweights, because they have to compete with the velocity, or lets say the output of a bow with a lot shorter acelleration way

Serbians and Byzantines were Europeans so arrows used might have been similiar to what English and French archers used (especially in certain periods when mercenaries from these areas were present). Especially since they faced and to some degree used plate armor.

Superb test. Just a question, the 155 lb bow and arrows you used, are those the 120 gram arrows and bow that shoots them at 190+ FPS? So are we actually talking 200 joules (that is freaking lot for a longbow, but it might be due to high efficiency with heavy arrows)?
Also, while during battle those arrow would be most likely shot from a distance, if they were shot against charging infantry (some 4 m/s speed) or cavalry (10-15 m/s) it would increase the energy of the arrow by at least 14% or 36-56% respectively which would more than cover for the loss of energy at the distance (roughly 15-20% loss at 100 metres with heavy arrow shot from warbow).
Finally, some types of crossbows might perform better than warbows. For example 600+ pound composite or yew crossbows (they are much more efficient than steel crossbows but they require more care, are more vulnerable to weather, are less reliable and are more expensive to make) could shoot 200+ joule bolts, however they take long time to reload (cranequin etc) and are often used in teams where one or two guys reload while one guy shoots.
Yes that is the same bow. All good points, they charge and speed would help cancel out the speed differential I think. Also it’s true some crossbows could outperform as well. But it’s darned close (steel struggles for sure)

I think that's the idea - to test what would happen to a knight if an archer had him in an optimal position
On crossbows. You would have to take into account that your testing was based off of one of the weakest crossbows, that probably wouldn't even be considered a war crossbow, against one of the more powerful war bows.
War bow draw weights, on average ranged from 70 or 80 pounds up to 160. So 165 lb draw weight would be on the heavy side even for a war bow.
On the other hand, for crossbows, hunting crossbows, not meant for war averaged from 400 lbs up to 600 lbs. War crossbows averaged anywhere from 700 lbs up to 1300 lbs.
So a 165 lb war bow vs a 600 lb crossbow is comparing apples to oranges as the saying goes. you are comparing a war bow to a hunting bow. If you want a more reasonable comparison to see the real relationship, you'd need to get a 1300 lb crossbow.
