- In this episode of Threads, Clinton Yates explores nearly 25 years of the Oregon Ducks having the most innovative, polarizing and influential uniforms in college football. Oregon's groundbreaking approach to its threads has inspired schools around the country to try a similar approach, especially given how much uniforms now factor into recruiting.

I live in Oregon and remember a conversation I had with an older gentleman a few years ago. He didn't like all the uniform changes and was loudly complaining about it. My reply "The uniforms changes aren't designed for you, they are designed to appeal to some 16 or 17 year old kid in Texas or California looking for a cool school."
Great response 😂
" . . . they are designed to appeal to some 16 or 17 year old kid in Texas or California looking for a cool school." EXACTLY! And the uniforms do a good job of appealing to the target audience.
Yeah, maybe one day too wearing skirts and High Heels for the football team up in Oregon will appeal to some 16 or 17 year old kid in Texas or California looking for "a cool school" too hehehe. You guys up in Oregon are such weenies with ugly looking football uniforms LMAO!
"He didn't like all the uniform changes" Yeah, because most of them are ugly that's why lol. Trust me they didn't go to Oregon because of those fugly uniforms they wear every week lol.
Love the uniforms been a fan since 2009 GO DUCKS !
FUN FACT: The Oregon Duck mascot outfit is not proprietary to Oregon. It was licensed to Oregon from Disney decades ago. In the Casanova Center there is a photo of Oregon representatives signing the deal with Walt Disney himself.
Do you remember Roboduck?
It was based on Donald Duck, yes. There was a verbal agreement from 1973 that allowed Oregon to use Donald's likeness for the Duck mascot. However, that agreement was terminated in 2010, which allowed the Duck to make many more appearances. Disney agreed that the Duck is not similar to Donald.
@@jaredlittle21 no one should ever remember Roboduck, it needs to fade into history like Alejandro Maldonado and never be mentioned again
Is that why he has a striking resemblance to Donald Duck, in nearly every aspect? This is a wild and terrific fact to hear! Thank you for sharing.
Edit: I mixed up ducks and accidentally wrote "Daffy" the first time. Haha. My apologies.
Yet you are mentioning him. Odd conundrum.@@robashlock Haha.
Love the new uniforms that all the teams are wearing.
I will always love the Oregon football team & all the uniforms
Oregon it the Goat of Jerseys
Oh yeah, I remember those 90s yellow and green Oregon jerseys.
My favorite old jerseys were the '97-'05 Pittsburgh Panthers jerseys.
The throwback unis against Washington are my favorite all time. Perfect modern representation of the traditional jersey look
I was so sad to find out they went with the cookies and cream uniforms for Washington this week. I thought they were going to go with the throwback uniforms 💔
@@shanebluethompson8669throwbacks will be worn this week vs Washington State
Being from NC The uniforms are what made me a Oregon during the Dennis Dixon days. Not to mention Phil Knight the creator of Nike is a Oregon Alum.
Mentioning Dennis Dixon brings back memories of conspiracy... His "injury" and subsequently losing our only national championship opportunity is such an annoyance. We keep having outstanding teams year after year, yet we always find some way to lose at least one pivotal game every year (sometimes more than one), resulting in dropping from the top 4 or never even eclipsing into said ranking... We've also had some phenomenal leaders, such as Herbert and Mariota, as well as Thomas (two different great players) and James. We even had a season with TWO speed demons with over 1k rushing yards (2008). I had to double check on ESPN to see which players I was looking to reference.
I am proud and happy that we have our own thing going. Its exciting to see what we are rolling out with the next week. Its just another thing to get excited about every week lol
I love my ducks!!!🗣️🦆
Many have copied the ‘Future Forward’ graphic design of Oregons uniforms but haven’t come close to The Ducks. And I’m a life long Notre Dame fan, although I don’t thing a school like ND should go that route.
Oregon changed the game of football wether people like it or not. Now everyone is trying to play catch up, but no one has better unis and facilities then Oregon! And yes here comes the “0 national championships” dumb comments. But once Oregon does reach its first national championship then what will people hate on then? Oregon has been one of the most successful programs the last 2 decades, they have played in multiple national championships this decade alone. So wether you like it or not OREGON has changed the game forever and is close to getting its first national championship!
Exactly. The last new national champion was Florida in 96, back when Oregon football just started to become solid, and since, Oregon has easily been the strongest challenger to become the next new national champion, meanwhile completing literally everything else you could possibly want from a CFB team. I always laugh when people use the national championship argument because of how it’s literally the only thing Oregon hasn’t done and therefore the only thing the have to use against us. Also makes me hope that before long we’ll win not only to win but also to see the reaction of the only argument against Oregon football dissolving
😂 how about winning a championship smh changed the game smh 😂😂
They just look cute 😂
If Oregon wanted to win a championship, the PAC-12 was the place to do it. Not the B1G. Now you'll be climbing over the likes of tOSU, UM, MSU and Penn State in your chase for a championship and frankly Oregon has proven time and time again that even after Phil has dumped $1B dollars into Eugene, UO doesn't have what it takes to win a championship. Their entire approach to football doesn't win championships, which SEC teams have proven to you on multiple occasions.
@@ryanberger81 tell me you don't follow recruiting without telling me.
Don't forget Dan Fouts QB at Oregon with Bobby Moore (Ahmad Rashad). 2 superstars in the NFL too.
I remember the initial Roboduck ‘99 commercial aired on TV and when the jerseys came out and I was hooked onto them!
As an Arizona State alum, it hurt to hear you call the pitchfork a 'trident'
He also called them the "dust devils" 😅
ESPN literally only cares about the SEC. It’s a joke.
Oregon native here! It’s a difficult thing having been blessed with the jerseys we have but only being known as the “jersey combo” state.
Man I can’t help it though. Choosing a jersey to wear amongst others every Saturday it’s pretty awesome (though, can be pricey😂)
I remember the start of awesome uniforms from Oregon because I have been a follower of theirs since 2nd grade (1997). I didn't realize they paved the way for other schools and brands to start doing this, though. This is spectacular to hear we are the trail blazers (pardon the pun, not referring to the not so interesting NBA team from Portland) for "looking good" in college.
I had no idea they started the helmets being painted glossy like car paint. I just assumed all helmets were always like that
@@KNR6292 I believe they were the ones to start that as well. Yes. Whomever was behind the start of customization of uniforms is a genius. I'd love to meet them before they or I pass.
Keep it going with these “Threads” episodes… Fire. My favorite so far, Florida CFB.
Go Ducks 🦆🦆🦆
Correction - the 'O' is inspired by Autzen Stadium. If you look at a top down view of it, same shape (logo had a few tweaks)
Wrong- it’s actually inspired by BOTH Autzen and Hayward field! 😅
True dat - both Hayward and Autzen!
It's both. The inside of the O is Hayward Field, the outside is Autzen.
Great job!
Most high-end college football helmets cost anywhere from $350 to $800 per helmet. These numbers are drawn from college school averages from universities like the University of Nebraska, Mississippi State, and Baylor University.
Sun devils, not dust devils
Oregon trail logo was badass 😂
Im old enuf to remember all this
It’s sun devil and pitchfork, not dust devil and trident
I want UCLA to adopt this mentality that Oregon does for their uniform and training facility design.
Is there footage from this interview at 6:14?
As a DUCKS fan “OUR TRADITION IS HAVING NO TRADITION” when it comes to uniforms GO DUCKS !
06-08 Diamond plate are my favorites, esp the black pants and shirts together
Good 'old uncle Phil
One of the best at the jersey game, in any sport! They don't call Oregon Nike U for no reason!
I want this as a job
My fav is the Once a Duck Themed Unis.
Oregon has some good uniforms. I’m a USC Trojan; however, sometimes I just watch Oregon games for the uniforms.
It’s low key dumb that cool uniforms made the Ducks so much more popular but I guess it makes sense. No one wants to drive around in an ugly car
Go Ducks
Tradition ist something kept in college football to a fault... kinda funny considering the current circumstances
💚💛🦆🦆
"dust devil", "trident" "TEM-pe" Jesus this guy went 0 for 3 on ASU. Also ASU rebranded and went uni-crazy under Nike
It is the Sun Devils.
Dope
Best jerseys in college football. Ask recruits.
Dust devils? not sun devils?
The old Oregon uniforms are best
Oregon uniforms are not the same anymore their combinations are really lackluster now.
I think that’s a Dan Lanning thing. He’s not the type of guy who wants his team focused on their uni’s. I could be wrong, as he did enjoy the color changing shoes they wore against Colorado. But I think he prefers guys who’d rather bring a lunch pail to work than a new uniform every week.
Lol this dude just called ASU the Dust Devils 🤣🤣
Sun devils 😂 I noticed that as well
1999.... the year Oregon stopped wearing uniforms and started wearing costumes. Frankly, I loved the pre-1999 Duck uniforms. Now get off my lawn!
I love it and hate it.
There’s Nike schools and then there’s the Nike school!!
University not state school
It's funny seeing this after their coach said they "don't play for clicks" 🙄
This began over 20 years ago, and 90% of all schools do it now, so how is it for clicks. I could see if you said that 24 years ago, but now it's a tradition. Also, I don't think by now folks aren't going online to see what Oregon is wearing week to week. Also, when was the last time the uniforms were trending on Twitter or anywhere else? I mean, they didn't even wear new uniforms for the 2024 fiesta bowl. They wore the old school OU uniforms that they literally had already worn once already in a game this season. So, no, not wearing uniforms for clicks, cause by now it's a tradition, unless it's still the year 2000 again and no one else aint doing it.
Oregon 10,000 uniforms. Zero national championship!
I bet you came up with that yourself…super original.
We’re getting closer and it scares you.
Sun Devils
Wen t e CEO of the greatest athletic clothing brand aka. Nike is your alum you can do whatever you want
you should of showed ducks pink for cancer
ASU are the sun devils not dust devils
Uni prons!
Shame Utah and their jump on this trend with a new twist of hand painted helmets and matching unis in honor of various people wasn't mentioned.
2021 - USS Salt Lake City and her crew
2022 - Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe
2023 - The Muss
😂 great uniforms. Smh still haven't won a championship 😂😂😂 good job
Jerseys are so overrated. The most successful programs in the country in the last decade have all kept the jerseys simple: Alabama, Georgia, Clemson.
Hey everyone! This guy figured it out!
Personnel, and not what you wear, wins games.
Wonder why the other teams have never thought of this...
That's because they are more worried about doing interior decorating to their uniforms than actually playing football and being good at it.
There’s nothing wrong with having different uniforms. I know it’s not American football, but soccer teams worldwide change their kits (uniforms) every year.
Yes, uniforms can’t help you win titles and it’s all about wins and well… no losses. Regardless, it’s fun and change is inevitable in all facets of life.
“Traditions never change - champions do.”
And this is a fact. One team can’t go winning a major title for let’s say five years straight… at least in college football. Bama won seven national titles, but it wasn’t seven years in a row.
All I can think of is Bayern Munich (soccer) winning the Bundasliga in Germany where they won it 11 years straight I believe. A major feat, but it’s not the UEFA Champions League title, which is the champion of Europe for those not familiar.
@@Mr.Davs2216so winning 3 rose bowls and having two national title appearances along with a fiesta bowl victory and many more bowl victories and being one of the winningest programs of the last 20 years isn’t being hood at football? You don’t watch very much football do you😂 you’re a dork and a female
Oregon wasn’t a powerhouse and they didn’t have a traditionally good program like BAMA, Georgia and even Clemson. All had National Titles in their pockets to use as recruiting tools. The Ducks used uniforms to recruit those Jimmy and Joe’s. We have garnered a lot of national spot-light because of them and seeing as we’ve been to two nattys since we developed the uniform game, I’d say it’s working.
Also, I think Dan Lanning is starting to put less focus on the uniforms than we have in the past. We haven’t added a new uniform since he got here. He wants guys to worry about what’s in their lunch box when they come to work and not what they are wearing to work.
But they aren't playing for clicks ;-)
Nope. The "once a duck" uniform was awful. We were wearing orange. Never wear orange.
(I'm alumni, so I have a right to say "WE.")
Nike went WOKE and never looked back.
cry harder
Cry harder champ.
Sure dude.
They still make the best looking gear out there. I lean to the right, myself, but not everything needs to become political.
Do I always agree on what they do and say politically? No. But who cares, this video isn’t about that stuff.
They make some of the coolest gear out there. And based on their success, that’s not up for debate.
"Simplistic" does not mean "elegant (in its simplicity)" or anything like that. Something that's _simplistic_ is too simple for whatever purpose. "Simplistic" is a bad thing, never a good thing. The word you were looking for is just plain "simple."
NOW WATCH COLORADO ELEVATE THE UNIFORM GAME TO ASTRONOMICAL HEIGHTS.😏☝🏾💯⚖️
Colorado will never the type of innovator that Oregon is.. they might be a great football team in a couple years though.
Just stop. The man who invented Nike went to school at Oregon. Colorado will never have the uniform combinations Oregon does.
Colorado isn’t going to change college football in every way, shape and form. The way they over-hauled their team was innovative. But having celebrities attend games to attract attention was first done by USC in the Carrol era. Miami was known for their swag back in the 90’s. And seeing as they made little to no changes to their uniforms this year, I don’t see them focused on that side of things. It’s been a good turnaround from 1-11. But there have been teams who went 1-11 and went on to win their conference the next year. Once Prime’s kids leave, he might stay one more year. Not enough time to live up to the amount of hype they are getting.
