Hi Doug I kind of stumbled into this and I am not a piano man lets see where this goes. and I give you a link on a thing that I am interested in. You can watch it if you wish and have a wonderful day. I am going to back this video up thanks again, not on the topic, not on the topic but very important here is the link and very worth a look studio.ruclips.net/user/video0i1fekgBW6Q/edit studio.ruclips.net/user/videoLodPBkz3Kw4/edit
Great stuff. I love that you don't take the approach of a lot of teachers: "You can't do anything until you know everything!" This gets me started with some simple concepts that sound great. I can learn them in C and then after I have the hang of that go on to other keys, etc. Really helps to get me actually playing.
yep. cannot stand music theory guys who refuse to explain things in C. they're all like "today we're looking at tritone substitutions for secondary dominants, and i'll just assume everyone can follow along if i do this in A-flat"
Finally...I'm retired and have time to learn some Jazz and improv. I studied classical from 7yrs old and got pretty good, majoring in music at UCLA. Even toured with the long Beach State Symphony orchestra back in the day. The problem was while I could read and play just about anything on sheet music I never understood or learned how to do the cool jazz and improv stuff that people want to hear! So I am thrilled to find this site and I'll be signing up shortly!!! awesome site, thanks...:)
Ill be honest Jonny, when i seen your ads i thought you were just another guy trying to trick me into paying for a useless program, but man your way more than that I’ve actually learned thing is cool thank you.
Smart, accessible, and friendly as usual. Especially that you help beginners, and intermediate players, avoid the complexities of chord scale theory. Also, this is what Barry Harris says " We didn't have time to think about all those scales ".

Johnny... just started.. I had skipped this earlier.. I am starting to feel and hear the approach notes much better. I am noticing that playing over the D-7 Left Hand with with Db D# is much better experience than just playing the notes themselves on the R.Hand. still working on it. I believe the first 2 approach notes up and down, according to the D7 chord are b9 #9. Could be wrong. .
Thank you johnny man i'm a jazz drummer The The Moro John Coltrane style.type but But always want to learn piano. Thanks, man Johnny. want learn piano banks man
start with the blues scale for begginers. WAAAAAAy better. Bebop is for experienced musicians, no novice is going to be able to practice in a way that is rewarding encouraging to their development
I love this but have one question, I feel it will get old and repetitive quickly, is there a break out from this, maybe throw in some power chords occasionally ? What do you suggest ?
Power chords are not really in the style. A better option would be looking at things like quartal or quintal voicings, or looking at ideas like ‘root, shell, pretty’ (adding upper extensions or alterations of chords). Otherwise, block chords and drop voicings provide a great sound too. Smooth voice leading is the key to great sounding chords though. A quick search on youtube will give you all the information you need about all of these ideas.
@@jomarc8766 obviously but C6 has a different sound to Am7. It depends what note is at the bottom There's people out there that think they sound the same 0_o
In this particular video, he hardly mentions right hand rhythm - he only mentions "coming up in triplets" at one point (playing 3 notes evenly within the space of 2 beats), but that's an occasional thing. Most of the time it's pairs. Anyone who's wondering why their solo doesn't sound like Jonny's... listen to how he swings the solos. He does play the triplets in a few places where they feel appropriate, but most of the time he pairs the notes and swings each pair slow-fast slow-fast slow-fast slow-fast instead of playing evenly spaced notes. His left hand is playing the Charleston rhythm that he showed how towards the beginning. He often doesn't swing the solos' notes when he shows them to us slowly, but it's there again when he speeds up and it sounds "right". So, make sure to feel that right hand swing, and give it a try. Also listen for when he pauses with a longer note or an empty space, get a feeling for when those and the triplets are due.
En el título yo cambiaría la palabra "escribió" por "inspiró". Tal vez podría usar "escribió" para Hey Jude y Bach (take a Bach song and make it better). Saludos

All this time I never knew about chord shells. I didn’t know there was a name for them. I’m self-taught and even now I’m still learning.

I love these pattern for enclosures and repeat them up or down ... on the chord tones
E C# D
Eb Db D
This sound more like cool jazz then bebop. I could be wrong.
Can you make more of bebop surrounding videos
Man i love cowboy bebop. tiraba cualquiera xd

The C6 could also be an Am7 every once in a while
Am7 & C6 use exact same x4 notes, different inversions. You can even try A major 7 variants making use of C sharp (Db)

Jonny, sounds like an approach from above the chord tone can be either chromatic or diatonic, right?
Спасибо!!! привет из Украины
Do you think this can be applied to say a guitar? As long as I identify quickly my important notes
Do you know any thelonious monk stuff?
🙏🏾
Can i use A 5+ for the C6? Thanks for all videos
yes you can,
Hey Jonny, what do you use to record your piano? Mic, Midi,?
probably with a usb interface, or a really nice midi vst
Muito bem 👏👏👏👍
This video truly demystifies what's going on in Bebop.
