(I'm glad to say that listening to you guys has really helped my ears and musicality overall, since things that were over my head two years ago are now understandable. ) I'm primarily a vocalist, and use a lot of your advice to apply to my vocal improvisation. Right now I'm hyper-focused on "BeBop Scales" and your aforementioned "Jazz Arpeggios"! I am enamored with the "Nifty" lines you lay out here, (and yes, I think "Nifty" is the appropriate word, haha. ) The "Double Dopio," is DOPE! That, and the Double Diminished Melodic Throwdown are things I'd like to master one day. Well, all of them, really. I do wish they were broken down a little more slowly since I'm singing them instead of playing, but if I put them on repeat I think they will sink in eventually. I know this is as older episode, and I don't know if you read the old comments, but I wanted to say how much pleasure and purpose I'm getting out of both your podcasts and videos. You guys also crack me up; you keep everything positive and light-hearted, not taking yourselves too seriously, but yet you're very serious about presenting quality content. Spaceman here. I'll own up to being one of the folks that talked about where to place chord tones rhythmically and strong beat weak beat. The more I listen, the more I see what Adam and Peter are saying about starting anywhere and not always lining up. But here's what that DOESN'T mean to someone still learning the bop language (such as me). That doesn't mean that you have the liberty to get lost and not know where the "1" of the measure is or the "3" or the "and's". Diz and Bird created a language that was incredibly rhythmic and rhythmically dependent. Each beat in a measure has a different sound, the "1" should sound different than the "and of 3". Here's where what Pete and Adam makes sense to me. The location in the measure or the phrase doesn't dictate the note choice. However, the location of the measure ("1st quarter" or "4th quarter, etc.) changes HOW those notes SOUND. Syncopation changes how a note sounds because the note operates in a time continuum. When you play chord tones on off beats, you get that stank face feel if you play em with enough moxie. Spacey enough for ya's? That's my take. Love ya both. Please listen to my You'll Heart It voice mail, I think ya'd get a kick outta it!
Yes that's an important point. You can play chord tones on the downbeats or the upbeats, but it's going to have a different sound and meaning. So you should be aware of it!

What an incredible video. I've been practicing on my own and plateauing pretty hard lately. For some reason I keep coming back to Donna Lee because I feel like I'm nearly at the cusp of a breakthrough and I think you guys nailed it in this video. I totally get what you're saying about not sticking to the grid. I'm doing pretty well with some of the techniques. surround, chromatic, triplets, double diminished, but i think i need to get better at that part where I can float and grow that independence from the changes. I think that's the key piece of the pie I'm missing. I know I'm 2 years late to the party, but much appreciated.

Great stuff! I've copped all 4 opening examples since, mostly in just 2 groups of strings (I'm a guitar player), in about two fingerings. Still tons of stuff to absorb here.

Huh. Impressive episode today. Obviously you guys are great, knowledgeable players and all that, and I tune in on your videos from time to time. And mostly my reaction is a matter of, okay, drop-2s and diminished scales, whatever, nice, but yeah, yeah, yeah -- obviously teachers have to talk about this stuff for the general student, but not wholly news. This today, though, was genuinely deep insights and thinking. Nice. As for the Stevie Wonder record with the bebop keyboard lick: if it's an oldie but goodie, SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, the song you may be thinking of is 'I'll Be Loving You Always' (IIRC, it's been decades) and that's because Herbie Hancock is guesting on that one.

how about including the transcriptions to the ideas. chromatics are too fast and obscure on piano.

Yeah! More playing is much more better!!! Btw 16:50 is it really A flat major? Or F altered scale some kind?
He says it's F7, which is the 6 of A flat, he just substitutes dominate for minor.
