I used the part where you put the axe head on. I was using a pick axe and the head came off and I thought what would nicole do so I flipped that baby upside-down and got it back on and went on my way. Thank you really helped me.
Thanks for the great video! One thing to keep in mind when working with linseed oil though: given a large enough surface area (like on a cloth used to apply the finish onto an axe) it can spontaneously ignite. So make sure to store those rags in an airtight container or completely dry on a non-flammable surface.
Lovely! And i love you re-used that footage right at the beginning where the handle breaks - your reaction: priceless! My favorite scene of all your videos!
Well done Nicole!! I just did my first axe repair and new handle on a 1930’s vintage Plumb shingle hatchet. Not bad for a rookie… I tried it once about 50 years ago but this time it turned out nice! Thanks for sharing your video!!! The Old Army Scout…
Only had to remove the handle of an axe once, so nothing to compare it too. But I used a drill to remove some of the wood from the eye (avoiding the metal bits). After that the leftovers came out pretty easily.
a bench grinder is quite handy, especially since axe heads are a good bit more work to sharpen than a knife. Get a little practice using the grinder, and hold the ace head very securely in your hands. You don't want the metal to get too hot, so you need to set out some time and go on-and-off with the sharpening. Using the grinder, always wear eye protection. Then be careful using your sharpened axe - you don't want it going into your leg or your foot. Then when you have your campfire all ready, I would recommend cooking hot dogs.
good info. would like to share that your soft face hammer is called a "Mallet" a Rubber mallet to be more difinative. there are wood mallets, leather, aluminum, and sand filled but those are more commonly refered to as a "dead blow" mallet. where as hammers are hardened steel and come in many varieties of their own. just because you hit something with something else doesn't make it a hammer.
Baseball bat manufacturer Louisville Slugger would call your torch work on the handle "Flame Tempered". They do it to strengthen the wood of all their baseball bats.
The other day I was at my local hardware store getting some chicken-wire to prevent my cat from too much mingling with my neighbors', when I spotted an axe I thought looked pretty neat, perfect size for my hands, and not even too expensive. Actually took me a while to notice my mother laughing hysterically as she stared at her 38yo lawyer son, who lives an hour's drive away from any trees, has been raised on strict a regimen of videogames and old books, and whom she was literally instructing on which kind of chicken-wire to buy for cat-containment purposes. I'm gonna have to go back to the store without her soon.
Easiest way to get an old handle out of the eye…cut off the broken handle close to the eye, drill as many random holes (preferably 1/8” or so) as you can fit in the wood that’s stuck in the eye, and then easily pound out the remaining wood with a punch or old screwdriver. Without drilling holes to relieve some of the pressure, a well-hung handle will be super frustrating (or impossible) to try to remove.
This the best video I've seen on fitting a handle and sharpening an axe. I learned to use a file and stone to sharpen axes and was horrified when I got to college and the forestry professor was using a belt sander.
I once restored a small handaxe with my father. Well, we also destroyed it by throwing it against wooden lamp posts. Fun times! Decades later, the little axe is still fine and well and from time to time serving as a hammer. Unfortunately, I can't really find any wooden lamp posts anywhere, though...
I own a small modern hand axe (It's been sharpened in Sheffield by a skilled friend). I also own three coppicing knives (basically reverse curved heavy blades for trimming and pollarding branches. One is new, two are very old, thick and heavy. I made new handle for them and tried to regrind & sharpen them (not very well done). I'd like to find a splitting axe, not too large.
I can't wait for the day I'll be able to put all this knowledge into practice. Right now I can only watch it from the boredom of my stupid city apartment.
This is very helpful now I know how to repair my axe what about pickaxes can you do a video about gardening tools like hoses and pickaxes how to replace those also and sledgehammers
Now if you want to go all froo-froo, wire brush the wood to hollow down the grain a bit, then wax it with white or black wax. Or heat-gun some crayons onto the wood and wipe off the excess. You got yourself a Rainbow Axe! 🌈
I've seen Baseball Bats with nails hammered in to them (like in "Escape from New York"); but an axe with nails hammered in to it seems a bit redundant.
Would using a large drill bit make clearing the eye of the axe easier? I mean, I wouldn't expect it to totally clear the eye, but I'd think making a large hole would release wood pressure/provide something more to grab onto.
I DO know what she's doing. She has an obsession with LONG HEFTY SHAFTS, getting those shafts OILED UP and then SPLITTTING THINGS WITH THEM. . it's all very clear to some of us.
I have an old >cracked< axe head that I inherited from my father-in-law. I'm told it would be dangerous to use it for its intended purpose, but I don't want to throw it away. What can I use it for?
Awesome infotainment videos, not sure how you appeared on my algorithm but I’m not questioning it 😊, any idea why you haven’t aged since your first upload?
As someone who has never held an axe in my life, this is what I needed Nicole!
Never?
watching you do what you love, out in nature, and with a nice smile, makes me feel joy. Thank you for being you!
Thank you for your lovely comment 😊
That "what did they do to you?" look at the axe with the nail. 😄
Nothing better than watching Nicole doing what she loves.
Really enjoy your vlogs, keep em' coming.
I love the Canadian pronunciation of “process”. Decades of working with Canadians it still makes me smile.
My partner and I seriously love that you chop wood for those who can't!
It makes me happy that there is space in this world for you to be you.

... Best axe care and maintenance ever shown .... Attitude and skills second to none .... Stay Safe ..
Two words for you Nicole....

Also laying them flat to dry rather than leaving it scrunched up.
Love the crazy physics of hanging the axe
Love watching you work on stuff, thanks for filming what you do!
I recently re-handled an old sledge hammer my neighbor gave me. It was very gratifying once it was done
That handle burning looks sweet!
Lovely! And i love you re-used that footage right at the beginning where the handle breaks - your reaction: priceless! My favorite scene of all your videos!
Some days I just legit need to hear you say okiedokie for everything to be alright.
Thinking a Nicole’s top 5 axes and mauls episode should follow ?

That double-edged axe actually works? Wow!

Not everyone can make even maintenance look so easy, natural and nice, well done. Brava ✌❤
These restorations is are works of art! It’s like watching the Mona Lisa being painted before your eyes 😁

Greetings from Poland from an old lumberjack.
Thank you for helping me this is very good information
I think you should make a series about how to survive in nature. That would be amazing.
@5:10 rofl
Masterfully done and informative. Top marks. Quality content

My favourite buff Disney princess satisfied me yet again.
Great video, that helped a lot of people. We need some more of the furry critter with the buck teeth. He was a great asset around camp. Thanks NIKKI.
me when I click on a nicole video: okidoki
me when the video finishes: lovely
Lol, this gives modernized "This Old House" vibes. I loved it.
Very well done Nicole.
Nicole thanks to ur tips on cutting a piece of wood in half I can cut a piece in half with one swing 🪵🪓
This is very calming to watch.
Very nice. Thx Nicole!
Hey Nicole 🌷🍃Love❤the Restoration’s 🌴☀️🌊🌈🌺✌️💚😎

Ahh, the gloves! Excellent.
DAM IM 63 THERE WAS THINGS I DID NOT KNOW,,,,,,,DAM GOOD SHOW,,,,,,,,,
The axe
has become new. Good job!🙂
You could also use vinegar to put a forced patina on the axe head to help protect it from rusting. Keep up your ( and Savannah's ) great videos ❤
THAT is some okie dokie axe restoration!
It is great!😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤ MY FAVOURITE TEACHER ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I thought you couldn't get more interesting Damn you come up with a double bit ax
I come from China and I like you very much
This the best video I've seen on fitting a handle and sharpening an axe.
I learned to use a file and stone to sharpen axes and was horrified when I got to college and the forestry professor was using a belt sander.
I shared this video on FB and recommended that my friends in Scouting show it to the youth so they can learn the right way

The most wholesome fucken content on all of RUclips! ❤
Very good instructions. Would love to this but I’m a bit of a whimp and use a electric/ hydraulic splitter!
Coenen the Barbarian!
😆😆😆👍
you tickle me with every video; i always smile at how much that you enjoy what you do
This is very helpful now I know how to repair my axe what about pickaxes can you do a video about gardening tools like hoses and pickaxes how to replace those also and sledgehammers
You don't know axe- Nicole knows axe! Bow!!
Lovely!
I love how handy you are!
Hello, you can use a driller to put out the handle, much more efficient.
Молодец. Купи ещё болгарку с лепестковым кругом, лезвия полировать, вообще конфетка будет 👍
I loved it
Awesome sauce!!!!!

Wonderful video! You explain things so wel!
Я не знаю, зачем это смотрю... У меня и топора-то нет...
Но это прекрасно!😍😍
Nicole Coenen the axe wielding barbarian
Nice job!
Excellent advice and great video!
Nice !
Naval jelly works lickety-split! 1:42
Great tutorial.
The beet stain is pretty.
People think Lucy McLean started 'okkie dokey', but chads remember you made it popular first.
Very important: always burn linseed oil rags, they can self-ignite!
A long handled punch works better for removing wood from the axe eye, a chisel is likely to get stuck in the wood.
What a good video?!!
Any chance you can show us your ax collection and tell us the stories behind as many as possible?
Nice
I just wish (for you) that the little cute helper is still around you...
Okie dokie! 😊❤
Beautiful Talented lady

Step 4 is soo counter intuitive. Makes my brain hurt xD
It feels weird, but It's so satisfying when it works!
It might take longer for removing rust, but salt and oil on my carbon steel kitchen tools... But I guess it doesn't have to be so gentle with an axe.
I have an old >cracked< axe head that I inherited from my father-in-law. I'm told it would be dangerous to use it for its intended purpose, but I don't want to throw it away. What can I use it for?
... Paper Weight ...
could you put it in a regular fire, not a forge fire, and let the fire burn out the wood without affecting the durability/hardness of the head?
Hello Nicole, as a blacksmith I ran even into an axe that had a quartz wedge... Now that was strartling.
Have you ran into other weird wedges?
I give this video a big “okey dokey”.
