      It's sad but it was still the right choice. The alternative would be to murder/kill/let die hundreds of people, including relatives and good friends. The alternative would be multiple times more unbearable, if the two of them were marginally sane.

    @OceanMetTheSky 3 года назад +1683

    Another thing. People argue that there's no right ending because it's based on personal play but if you are playing it through Maxs vision, saving Chloe is the real Max choice. If you think Max would choose to sacrifice Chloe, you didn't read her journals. There are numerous instances where Max said her power was always fate to save Chloe. She references a star trek episode about someone going back in time to sacrifice a lover so Nazis don't win the war. Max asks herself what she would do if she were in that position but follows it up with talking about it being fate that she was in the bathroom with Chloe.
    Another page, max talks about giving up the zeitgeist gallery trip because a storm is still coming and Chloes life was in danger so she had to get back to her to save her. Not to save Warren. Not to save Joyce. Not Kate, not even Arcadia. Chloe only, like she always has.
    Another page, she talks about how she doesn't care if the world is ending because it felt so good to hold chloe again. So even at this point where max knew this was really about to be something catastrophic, she was focused on holding Chloe, nothing else around. She says this has to be fate and destiny. So even at this end of the world point, max is still thinking and feeling that her entire purpose has been to save Chloe. Max goes onto talk about how they give each other strength and maybe more.
    Finally, the last page of the journal talks about how Chloe is more than a best friend and obviously in love with Chloe but both had held back all this time. She journaled that she really knew Chloe was more than a friend when she felt physically sick watching Chloe flirt with and kiss other people in her nightmare and throw insults to her like saying she would never love her as much as Rachel. This was her subconscious and meant to show us how she felt. Even if you try to pursue Warren and don't kiss or flirt with Chloe, her last journal page is still questioning her feelings for Chloe, asking herself if its love or friendship but obviously with this option, her journal is less obvious compared to the one where you romanced Chloe the entire game. But it still shows that regardless of your path, Max questions and internally knows she feels more than friendship for Chloe.
    Max loved Chloe as did she and Maxs intentions always with her powers had one ultimate purpose at the expense of anyone else and gladly because Max says Chloe is all that matters to her. Which she tells us over and over again in her journals which is a big overlooked item in this game. But her journal and Chloe's journal in Before the Storm paint out things below the surface that we never outright saw or heard in the game.
    People may say killing loads of people for one doesn't make logical sense. And it doesn't. But Max wouldve picked Chloe undoubtedly, even if the game gives you the other option or we are lead to believe there's no canon ending. But max said all through the game out loud and in paper that Chloe was meant to be with her by her side, no matter what and that they have always been intertwined.
    Max wouldve saved Chloe, always.

      The developers confirmed that the doe is actually Rachel, plus if you look at where the doe originated in episode 2 it originated right over the spot where Rachel is buried. It then bows its head and disappears when Max and Chloe discover Rachel's body. Also in before the storm Rachel kicked over some trash she set on fire and screamed causing winds to generate by her scream and cause the fire to spread very quickly. That makes me believe that the storm is actually Rachel's Revenge like Chloe stated in Episode 5. She would be getting revenge for all the injustices that were done to her and Chloe. Max rewinding time and creating tears in reality by manipulating it was probably the opening that Rachel needed to reach out from Beyond the Grave.

    I hope the comments section realizes that if any of you saved Kate from suicide, then it was for nothing. Saving Chloe means the whole town dies in the end, including Kate regardless of whether or not you might have saved her from the roof.

    • @cherryclouds1027
      @cherryclouds1027 6 лет назад +294

      Kate isn’t doomed like Chloe because you can actually SAVE her whereas the only options regarding Chloe are either sacrificing her or the town. It's completely valid to want to keep your best friend safe but what's the point in saving an innocent angel from suicide if you're going to kill her along with hundreds of other people in the end?

    • @the_amazing_el
      @the_amazing_el 6 лет назад +377

      Word of God is that the number of deaths/who dies is up to the player. It's left intentionally ambiguous, and only like 8 or 9 people are actually seen dead on-screen. I'd like to know where you get that literally every single person in Arcadia Bay was killed. The tornado only did EF3 damage at best - realistically you're looking at between 30 and 40 casualties, maybe?
      The "Chloe is doomed" thing doesn't hold water either. Michel Koch has clarified that the storm/supernatural stuff stops when you save Chloe; so, what, did fate just give up? And Max had her first vision of the storm before Chloe died, anyway. The entire foundation for that argument comes from Warren's unreliable speculation, as it's never even HINTED that Chloe is 'supposed' to die until episode 5 - which is the weakest episode in terms of writing and consistency.

    I pick this ending because it shows that Max isn't an "everyday hero". It gives a new sense of realism to her character. And it shows she's just human. I'm sure anyone would sacrifice for the one they love. It also feels more fitting (at least to me) that none of what you did was pointless, that Max and Chloe's fates were always intertwined. It was meant to be. That's just my opinion though.

Hence in my view it's not about a superficial "selfishness" or a superficial "pride against destiny", it's simply a horrible choice to let all those people die, and even if they did let that happen, the only way they could live with themselves it would be through very horrible grief and regret unless the two of them were total psychopaths.

    Replayed this game recently, and I noticed how Dontnod likes to put subtle stuff here and there.
    Look at Chloe's shirt. There's a picture of a snake biting his own tail. That snake is the Uroboros, which is the symbol of eternal return.
    It's a symbol which represents time as an evolutive cycle: it begins at a moment, it evolves, and at the end it gets back where it began, except you're back here with all the evolution between the beginning and the end of the cycle.
    Here's a translated extract of a French article I just read about the Uroboros:
    "While some may think the Uroboros is a creature, he rather is one of the oldest esoteric symbols of the world, representing a dragon or a snake in a circle biting its own tail. Having had his name from Greek and named "Uroborus" in Latin, he is the symbol of eternal cycle of nature, the symbol of time repeating itself endlessly, without a beginning or an end and visible through the seasons, the day & night cycle, etc... He is the beginning and the end, since even though death and destruction interrupts some people or things' destiny, it is not an end since others will continue or begin their life. He is the hope of a permanent rebirth of the world."
    (Original source here: www.dol-celeb.com/autres/ouroboros/)
    I think Chloe wearing an Uroboros symbol isn't pure randomness, Dontnod had something in mind with this.

    I'll always save Chloe. I spent too much time getting to know her character to kill her off. I'm happy with the ambiguity of this ending. I like to think that most of the townspeople got out, we don't know how much time had passed since Max went into her subconscious, people might have had a chance to escape. The tornado was big but wasn't moving that fast. As for the whole "it's Chloe's fate to die, she would die later on anyway", I like to believe that the storm is the end of it. Death wanted somebody, and if it wasn't going to be Chloe then it'd be someone else. The town is full of scumbags to be fair, and Blackwell is pretty high up from the coast so it would have had plenty of warning. Plenty of buses for an evacuation of Blackwell too. The likes of Kate, Dana and the rest might have been able to escape. And David was still at the barn, which looked like it was a ways out of town. Joyce and Warren and the rest in the diner made a break out the back in Frank's RV (he's alive in my playthrough).
    Everyone's alive and hey-presto, I've made up my perfect ending by desperately clutching at straws and the game's ambiguity. And Max shouldn't feel guilty. She didn't ask for her power and she didn't know how it would affect reality. Even at the end she's still learning. She gets this thrown at her and its completely unfair but who knows. Maybe life will present her a chance to go back and prevent the entire thing while ensuring that Chloe survives, when she understands her power a little bit better.
    The point is, Chloe Bae over Arcadia Bay.

    • @pemanson
      @pemanson 8 лет назад +7

      Even before the tornado plenty of people had died instead of Chloe. The only one who doesn't die because she's alive is Rachel, the rest of the ones who dies in the game would be alive if Chloe is sacrificed. So the theory regarding "death wanted someone" does not ass up in my opinion, unless he demanded multiple people in return. I think that bad shit would continue for her, destiny would call for her death in one way or another. We see that during the gameplay when Max is forced to save her over and over, I see no reason for it to stop.

      Also there's no proof that killing chloe would make the tornado not appear since in the timeline where Jefferson shoots Chloe in the junkyard, while he's putting his 'finishing touches' on Max, outside of the bunker, the storm and subsequent tornado is still happening. So there might not be a guaranteed avoidable natural disaster just by killing Chloe, but by not messing with time in the first place. So by that rule, Max wouldn't have been able to save Kate either from being depressed or even killing herself since the bullying would have likely still hapened, and also maybe not have been able to intevene in other people's lives in a positive way, since by my thought process, to avoid the tornado. she should have never altered time in the bathroom in the first place.
      TLDNR version: The tornado still happens when Chloe dies in the junkyard. I saved her because it's the right thing to do in more ways than one.

      Alexoxo___ Yes, I understood that, and I don't think responsibility works that way. I didn't create the storm because I didn't ask for these powers. Especially without the hindsight of knowing exactly how things will turn out, I have no good reason to go back and mess with time even more. Changing things apparently makes things worse, so why would going back magically erase everything? Turns out it did, but that doesn't change the morality of the situation.
      If someone kidnapped my family and said I either let them die or they'll detonate a bomb downtown, I would save my family without any hesitation, and anyone killed by the bomb would NOT be my responsibility, but the bomber's.

    • @Raveityourway
      @Raveityourway 8 лет назад +7

      +Sam M. Mate, you must've heard of the Trolley thought experiment? Where the only way to save 5 people is to push 1 person and kill them? This is the same situation. As far as Max didn't know she was causing the storm, as soon as she found out she had the opportunity to reverse it, she had a moral obligation to do so. Lethargy is not justifiable in a position where action is possible, and the cost of the action is far less than the profit.
      Let me put it this way: Suppose you had your arm cut off in an accident. No-one's responsible, it was a complete accident. Now say I have the opportunity, through magic or whatever, to make your arm grow back by cutting off my little finger. Yes, I've done nothing wrong to deserve losing a finger, but you've done nothing wrong to deserve losing an arm. At a basic standstill position, I have choice A, where I lose my little finger, or choice B, where you lose your arm. It makes no difference that one of the choices is 'do nothing', as I still have to pick one between the two, inaction is not the base human position. Ultimately the moral kindness to do is to keep the overall human suffering as low as possible by removing my finger, the moral unkindness is to put myself first, for my finger has more value to me than your arm does.
      This is why your 'bomber' theory doesn't work. It assumes there is another who will take responsibility. Not only that, but saving your family wouldn't be the moral thing to do, and you would have an obligation to save as many people as possible without discrimination. Say you have 4 family members, and 40 people will be killed by the bomb. The bomber is responsible for the average of possible deaths. So 4+40=44 44/2=22. The bomber is responsible for the deaths of 22 people. Your responsibility is this: Will you save 18 people? Or kill 18 people? Those are the differences in your choice, so while it is emotionally difficult to overcome, which influences your morals, you still have a moral obligation to stop the bomb at the expense of your family. In this situation, morally, the bomber kills 22, you save 18. In the situation you picked, the bomber kills 22 and you kill the remaining 18.
      Does this make sense?

    If you look at 5:34, you see that the diner seem intact. I, who chose to save Chloe, can't help but think that most of the people inside probably survived. As well, the town is almost empty. That should suggest that plenty of people left, or stayed inside. There probably was quite a few that didn't make it though in the end.
    The more I analyze both endings I feel like this ending is the best one. The biggest reason for that is that Max, after all, had the vision of the tornado before she saves Chloe in episode. That means somehow that the storm was going to happen anyway, unless of course, correct actions were taken to avoid that. Rationally, it is not logical to think that it is right to avoid prevent a death in order to do that. Also, Max gains her power in exactly the moment she can save Chloe. That should suggest something.
    Regarding the endings, if you allow the storm to happen, you do shift the fates of everyone from being your responsibility to their owns. Max's actions may be more important than theirs, but the other residents in Arcadia Bay can also act and affect the future. With that said, the selfish Arcadia Bay sacrifice is not as selfish as you might think first. But, then again, if you kill off your best friend and live with it, as the main character that you are, of course it may be better. Max is a person like the rest of us and she has her interests much you who are reading this have yours.
    I don't regret to sacrificing Arcadia Bay and I do think my reasoning is not completely based around rationalizing saving my best friend over the the lives of many others.

      I think it is the right end for certain players, if you focus your game time heavily on max and Chloe interaction and mostly ignore the rest of the cast (which is actually quite easily done) then they will seem like a bunch of random NPC's with no personality who are easily cast aside for your best girl and this final scene makes sense.
      If you do get to know the rest of the charcters you find they are all their own people with lives and dreams and to snuff all that out at a (fairly unlikely) shot of happiness feels like by far the greater of two evils.

      When they drive in the truck she doesn't look very happy imo because she knows everybody died because of her selfish behaviour. Chloe already had mental problems before and now max puts even more burden on her because she refuses chloes request to sacrafice her. And as warren said before in the two whales diner the lifes of many go before the life of a single person (or smth like that) , so I think it would have been the right decision to sacrafice chloe instead of the people in arcadia bay.

      Max and Chloe both have that sort of sneaky smile going on. Obviously they're both still rattled, but I don't know that Chloe TRULY wanted Max to sacrifice her. She already had abandonment issues from her father, Rachel and Max. She's not going to suddenly forget all that and get over it. What Chloe said, she said to make Max feel better. Because in that moment Max was more important. She wouldn't be mad at her because she decided NOT to abandon her again. And yeah, Sacrifice Arcadia Bay is selfish. But it's OK for Max to be selfish. She's an 18-year-old girl. Not Superman.

    What's the point of obtaining those powers at the very beginning if outcome (Chloe dying) is going to be the same even if you didn't get them? If you sacrifice Chloe in the end, that means that Max would see people die, get dosed and what not, just for Chloe to die at the end anyway. I'm pretty sure she would have been better of not knowing any of that. Chloe wouldn't have any memories of you except those years of childhood and the fact that you left her.
    So that's why I say fuck it all. Fuck "Sacrifice Chloe" ending. Bae before bay all the way.

    Both endings tear through my gut and really hit it home// Regardless, this game is amazing. To be honest I think the ambiguity of this ending both works in its favor, and against. Because nothing really is confirmed you don't really know who lived or who didn't, and there's a feeling of no "closure." However, with this also it's up to your imagination to kind of tell what happens to Max and Chloe and Arcadia Bay. But at least in the end, after all that heartbreak, sorrow, and loss, they will finally be able to be together, and I think that's what matters.

    Correlation is not the same as Causation. What if she goes back, lets Chloe die, and soon after the funeral that damn storm hits and wipes out most of Arcadia Bay anyway? Because it wasn't about saving Chloe. It was about the time travel... which still happened even if you let her die. Because she remembers it all. It all happened. The storm is not meant to kill Chloe. It is meant for Max... and will strike no matter what.
    So. Is saving Chloe the psychopathic choice? No. There is no proof that saving Chloe caused the storm, just supposition by Max. Save Chloe. At least... you can be sure one other person lives. To sacrifice her without knowing for certain that the storm will not hit? That is the true psychopathic choice.

    Its never an easy decision at the end of episode 5.
    As much as I wish I can save everyone, but sadly like the reality we live in, fortune doesn't always smile upon us.
    No matter how many times I replay the story,.....
    I will always choose to save Chloe in the end.
    It is not just because she is my best friend. But I strongly believe that Arcadia Bay and its people have had their chances in life, while Chloe's life has been nothing but a spiral downwards ever since her father died in the accident. Almost everyone has let her down in life. I just can't be like everyone else and let her down too....
    Chloe deserves better and a second chance in life, despite what destiny has in store for her.
    I know there are good people too in Arcadia Bay, among the bad seeds but I just can't save everyone.
    Even Superman can't save everyone.
    Sometimes....
    It is not how many people we can save, but who is worth saving. There is only so limited time, energy and resources.
    Choosing is never easy. And like what Thanos said: "The hardest choice requires the strongest will".
    Perhaps by choosing to save a few, it will have greater positive impact to the world as compared to saving everyone, including the rotten eggs.
    Maybe some might disagree with my view, but then again we all have our own perspective.
    This might be just a simple game, but it is one that touches my soul.
    Thumbs up to the developer.

    First of all, this game broke me. Seriously
    Iv'e come to realize there's a problem with this ending... The universe is really after Chloe that week. She dies in every alternate reality Max creates. First Nathan, then the train, Frank, car crash, Jefferson, and then the storm... It seems like Final Destination plot, no matter how they try Chloe was destined to die that week and it seems like she will, sooner or later, and it will just become harder and harder for Max to protect her, while sacrificing more lives of others in the process. Someone noted you can see the weather hasn't quite cleared up in this ending after the storm, as opposed to the other one.
    So sooner or later Max would probably have regretted making this choice and ripping that picture.. Though this is the first choice I made at the time, seemed to me no way Max would go back in time just a second after she realized she just messes shit up more and more, going to what can only be described as Hell and almost dying.
    Seriously, this game broke me.

      I feel the same. Chloe's death is a fixed point in time, as evidenced by Max changing the most significant moment in her life, but that action leading to her slow death thanks to the car accident. Its like The Time Machine, where the main character tries to prevent the death of his beloved, but she dies regardless of what he does until he accepts that its something that can't be changed. I feel this morbid sense that choosing Chloe will just lead to further destruction in the future, and yet another death for Chloe.
      i did however think that there should have been a third option; for Max to sacrifice herself. It would have been a huge risk, but she could have gone back to the first instance of her power and still prevented further time manipulation, by taking a bullet for Chloe. She would have died in the bathroom, thus being unable to continue the time reversing that lead to the towns destruction., Nathan would have still been arrested for murder, Jefferson would have been apprehended,Rachel's body found and laid to rest with respect, but Chloe would have seen Max die for her and no longer feel like the world was abandoning her, thus affecting her future decisions and maybe leading to her altering her life so none of the risks she took that lead to her deaths would happen. like i said, risky, but would have been poetic and beautiful nonetheless. I liked the finality of the end, because it was unexpected, and quite heroic on Chloe's part, but i felt that it took too much choice out of Max's hands to take either option. the ultimate sacrifice ending would have been a noble route to take.

      @@user-cw6vz4nm8y And if Max sacrifices Chloe, neither of them live at all. Before The Storm hints at Maxine's suicide in the case of Chloe sacrificing herself. Call me old fashioned, but for me loyalty and love to my friends always comes first. I would never willingly erase the best week of me and my friend's life after years of being apart only to have them die by way of some unwilling psychopath in a dank bathroom. And that's exactly what happens to Chloe when you sacrifice her. She dies never knowing Max came back to spent the best time of her life with her. Died never knowing David and William both would have died for her. Died never knowing Rachel never abandoned her. She died angry and scared and confused. And Max? Max knows it. Max has lived the other possibility, and will forever have to live with the fact that she willingly chose not to live it through. She erased it, but not the memory of it.
      I don't think she'll ever get over that. I wouldn't, and I'm a cold bastard. Remember what Joyce said to Max about William? That his gift to them were the great memories of time he spent with them? Yet look at the state of Chloe... Memories don't heal those kinds of wounds, they keep them alive. Max will never be happy if Chloe dies this way, not to mention that Chloe has a heart of gold deep down and just deserves better.

      Butterfly Hakuno theres also a bunch of people that Max and Chloe don’t know in the town that she’d be killing for the sake of saving one person. Maybe the people you mentioned aren’t worth sacrificing Chloe, but there’s the entire town after them who would die through no fault of their own. There’s very obviously one morally right choice, and one emotionally right choice. It wouldn’t be morally right to kill a thousand odd people because of the things some of them have done.

      Straight White Male I didn’t say anything to the contrary. In fact, you’re right. But she would still feel guilt if she killed everyone, so neither ending is entirely the right choice/the easier choice to make.

    I think this is a problem multiple choice games are facing. You play your character a certain way and make decisions with consequences, but the final stage just boils down to picking an ending with none of your choices factoring into the ending. Mass Effect 3 had this problem and so did Life Is Strange. Witcher 3 did it right though, where the ending you get depends on the choices you made in the game.

    • @DaBroob
      @DaBroob 8 лет назад +20

      I disagree. I understand the the previous choices doesn't have a DIRECT imapact on the final choice, but if you play through the story getting to know people, saving and caring for people and also avoiding that people dies, you''ll be either more or less conflicted about which choice to make.

    • @K-One582
      @K-One582 8 лет назад

      DaBroob Well yeah, I was conflicted with which choice to make but thats not what I'm talking about. You said you disagree with me but you agreed with the point I was making which is that previous choices don't have an impact on the ending or the character you are trying to mould is no longer in your control. I'm not just talking about LIS btw. I used witcher 3 as an example because that game has you make decisions throughout the game that can change the ending. Overall, LIS does a pretty good job with handling with choices except for the ending imo.

      Games like Witcher 3 are awesome because they make you work for a good ending and there's a lot of variety in them. Life is Strange has a lot of difficult decisions, but in the end none of them matter because you only choose between two endings. I still like the strong relationships between the characters though

    The difference in the tone of the two ending songs is stark. Spanish Sahara is a song about trying to push down the pain forget what happened. It's melancholic with a sense of despair. The line "So I walked into the haze" and "I'm the fury in your head" imply (at least in this context) that it's Chloe speaking. She wants Max to forget the horror and focus solely on the happy moments they had together.
    Then there's Obstacles which is a song about weathering the storm and being together til the end. This song is about the strength of Max and Chloe's relationship. How, despite what happens to them and Arcadia Bay's destruction they have been and always will be best friends
    And it also feels like it's being sung from Chloe's perspective, affirming that no matter what Max chooses she'll support her and not blame her for the decision.

    The “Sacrifice Chloe” ending is the more emotionally impacting of the two but I can’t see how anyone would walk away from that ending without serious emotional scars:
    Consider Joyce who not only lost William and now has to outlive her own child? I’m not a parent but I can only imagine how horrible that must be.
    David would probably not be able to live with himself either as we see how it affects him if you tell him that Chloe was killed by Jefferson in the junkyard. Despite all his flaws David cared for Chloe and to find out she died on his watch as chief of security at Blackwell must be devastating.
    And finally there is Max who not only has to live with the guilt of knowing that she could have done something to save her friend, but instead decided to watch her die. She will probably have it the worst.
    The “choice” you have at the end of this game is basically someone pointing a gun at your head and forcing you to make an impossible choice.
    This is my interpretation of Life is Strange that brings the most closure to me personally:
    *“Sometimes people need you, though. Even when they won’t admit it.”*
    The story is about the friendship between Max and Chloe and how time set them apart. It’s about the rekindling of that friendship as well and how they grow to learn that they are incomplete without the other in their life. Max grows from a shy and introverted young woman into a more bold and confident person thanks to Chloe.
    Chloe on the other hand comes to terms with her pain and grief and realise that she is worth more than she thinks she is. She not only admits to her own selfishness but accepts she is worth saving after all. If there is anyone in Arcadia Bay that deserves a fresh start in life it’s Chloe especially considering all the shit she’s been through.
    Max and Chloe facing the storm at the end is the two of them finally letting go of the past and moving forward into an uncertain future. Together. It’s always scary to head into the unknown especially when you are at the doorstep of becoming an adult.
    *Pirates forever.*

      Agreed. I don’t know if you did it on purpose but the line you quoted was also said by William in BtS, in regards to Rachel needing Chloe (: it’s funny how I thought Chloe was annoying in the original, but after BtS, it made me understand her. yes she had her unfair moments in the original BUT it was reasonable. she was STILL grieving, her best friend left her, they had terrible communication even when Max promised constant contact (Farewell episode), David being patronizing and unfortunately unaware that he was forcing himself in the picture, Joyce “moving on without her”, and then later lost her best friend.
