Back in the 1990's, on the other side of the globe to this I took my two young daughters, wife and my two younger brothers well up into the high country wilderness in mid-winter. It was covered in fresh very deep snow. We were in my Hilux twin cab 4x4 while the brothers were in a single cab Hilux. Just a sightseeing family day out. We stopped near to the peak, about 50m off the track, to set a fire and cook some lunch. Our tracks were the only ones about. No one had been in the area for many days. After about half and hour we were surprised to hear some vehicles approaching, two Toyota Landcruiser utes appeared and slowed to a crawl as they obviously surveyed us. I could see there were four or five large blokes in the vehicles. They didn't acknowledge our wave. They took off along the track BUT shortly after I heard engine noise signaling their likely return. As a precaution I grabbed my Browning BLR from behind the seat and placed it in the passenger front seat and stood in the door opening. The two vehicles appeared again and pulled abruptly to a stop. One bloke jumped out while the others watched us. This bloke came up to us muttering about if we'd seen a deer hunting dog. He didn't hide his eyeing of the women folk. I briefly spoke to him about breed of dog and contact details etc, as he looked at me I moved slightly from the open car door, just enough so he could see the BLR. He abruptly turned on his heels and walked quickly back to his mates. Both vehicles immediately left. It was many years ago and I still sometimes wonder what the outcome may have been up in the high country in the dead of winter if not for Mr J Browning sitting in the passenger seat.

@@Zoomboomdoom414Dude, if you’re from the US, and I’m assuming you are from your comment, you can’t knock Canada when it comes to crime and punishment lol. I’m from the US and it’s an absolute disaster here. Canada is not. We have the largest number of incarcerated citizens in the entire world, with over 2 million people currently in prison. Per capita, we are #6 worldwide with an average of 505 prisoners for every 100,000 people. Compare that with Canada, who has less than 100 for every 100,000. So that would make you probably think Canada has a serious crime problem, right? Since they don’t arrest nearly the amount of people we do here. But it’s the opposite. Compare homicide rates. In the US, we have 15,517 murders for every 100,000 people. Canada only has 542. So yeah. They have their sh*t together. We do not. And btw, “eligible for parole” is not the same thing as “granted parole” ya know. Just bc he’s eligible doesn’t mean he’ll ever be released.

Your comment resonates with my feelings. I think anyone who has ever camped with their family or loved ones ones can relate. We did a lot of camping as a family in Western WA and Eastern WA & OR., over the years. We had a big extended famaly, and would get togehter for big group camps in ‘regular” campgrounds with a Ranger or a Host , but sometimes in remote areas..known to family members who had worked as loggers etc. But always in a groups. but sometimes we had to pull into “remote”, unattended places to camp, overnight on our way to join the others. The woods always felt like a safe place to me. Looking back, I thank God and our Guardian angels for keeping us safe. I am pretty sure that most of the men in our families, brought firearms, most of them were hunters, too. This story shows how important it is to be armed when venturing iaway from civilization. A single killer, overwhelmed 2 families because he had a gun. But maybe if they did have guns, he took them by surprise. But then there are stories about Bears, and even those who are armed get killed or mauled. There is a lot to be said about staying home This tragedy happened 40 yrs ago and our parks and wilderess areas are much more dangerous now. Thank you, Brian, for the work you do, informing us and educatiing the viewing public on safety and survival hiking & camping. and highlighting the unsolved cases of those who are still missing, May they RIP

yep, pretty obvious by now that its best to carry a firearm with you when camping in the deep bush. Granted, it might not help if taken by surprise, but it does help ones chances overall with the myriad of scenarios that can play out.
People go out to camp, hike, canoe, kayak, mtn bike, bird watch, etc.
While others go out to hunt game (usually to cut up and eat selected portions thereof) (deer, elk, moose, caribou, etc)
....and there are a very few, who go out and hunt humans.

Won't do any damage to his soul, that's not our concern. And the idea he can legally get parole EVER! My blood boils at 98.6°f just thinking about it. What's wrong with peoples' thinking? Don't bother, I'm inflexible. It keeps me above ground now and later. When it's time, body goes down-6 foot distance down haha, I go up, way way up. Doubt it not. If you go camping be careful there might be this guy's cousin out on parole waiting for you and your children to show up unarmed. I guess that's the chance we have to take every time we go out or stay home........

As a resident of Clearwater(Wells Gray parks location)and in grade 9 at the time I can remember the media swarming into town and the nationwide coverage we were getting for the wrong reasons. The way that the RCMP figured out it was Shearing is that while he was drinking in the bar one night he asked someone how to fix a bullet hole in a vehicle door and when the truck was found it had a bullet hole in the driver's door. Also there was a rumour going around Clearwater that he had a partner with him as it would have been hard to tie people up while holding a gun.

Thank you for not using fake re-enactments and using real photos. Makes a total difference watching.

Thank you for the feedback. It's very hard at times and many people don't often realize they are real pictures etc from the area. Yes of course there's always going to be a need for some small fillers but in my videos I try and make 90% plus all real pics, etc. Anyway thank you for watching and wishing you a happy holiday season🙏🙏

So very disturbing. Terrifyingly evil. I was vacationing with family in that same area in a camper just like thiers. My aunt and uncle and kids traveled with us in a car, just like those people. Fortunately, 5 years earlier. Still it is very creepy to consider, that this monster may have driven right by us.

Wow we're basically the same age. 2months apt and crazy that you happened to be born on that date. Are you from Buffalo? All my mother's side of the family lives there so I grew up going there, the snow, Niagara falls, Bison and Bills games.. Anyway thank you for your feedback and sharing your thoughts🙏 I hope you have a good holiday season!

May these families rest in peace without any memory of how they died. I lived less than an 1 1/2 hours drive from Wells Grey Park when this horrific crime happened. I've been to this stunning park many times in my life and have several generations of family that grew up in the Clearwater area and some still living around there. Several of my cousins even knew this man and I don't think they will ever forgive themselves for not recognizing his unimaginable potential. As @patb4622 mentions below, thank you for not going into the details of the hell these two families endured.

Very beautiful park! Went there last year, camped for two nights and would have pushed till the end of the park camping but vacation was short. Tragedy shouldn’t happen in such a setting. Evil shouldn’t be a part of this beautiful place!
