Back in the 1990's, on the other side of the globe to this I took my two young daughters, wife and my two younger brothers well up into the high country wilderness in mid-winter. It was covered in fresh very deep snow. We were in my Hilux twin cab 4x4 while the brothers were in a single cab Hilux. Just a sightseeing family day out. We stopped near to the peak, about 50m off the track, to set a fire and cook some lunch. Our tracks were the only ones about. No one had been in the area for many days. After about half and hour we were surprised to hear some vehicles approaching, two Toyota Landcruiser utes appeared and slowed to a crawl as they obviously surveyed us. I could see there were four or five large blokes in the vehicles. They didn't acknowledge our wave. They took off along the track BUT shortly after I heard engine noise signaling their likely return. As a precaution I grabbed my Browning BLR from behind the seat and placed it in the passenger front seat and stood in the door opening. The two vehicles appeared again and pulled abruptly to a stop. One bloke jumped out while the others watched us. This bloke came up to us muttering about if we'd seen a deer hunting dog. He didn't hide his eyeing of the women folk. I briefly spoke to him about breed of dog and contact details etc, as he looked at me I moved slightly from the open car door, just enough so he could see the BLR. He abruptly turned on his heels and walked quickly back to his mates. Both vehicles immediately left. It was many years ago and I still sometimes wonder what the outcome may have been up in the high country in the dead of winter if not for Mr J Browning sitting in the passenger seat.

@@Zoomboomdoom414Dude, if you’re from the US, and I’m assuming you are from your comment, you can’t knock Canada when it comes to crime and punishment lol. I’m from the US and it’s an absolute disaster here. Canada is not. We have the largest number of incarcerated citizens in the entire world, with over 2 million people currently in prison. Per capita, we are #6 worldwide with an average of 505 prisoners for every 100,000 people. Compare that with Canada, who has less than 100 for every 100,000. So that would make you probably think Canada has a serious crime problem, right? Since they don’t arrest nearly the amount of people we do here. But it’s the opposite. Compare homicide rates. In the US, we have 15,517 murders for every 100,000 people. Canada only has 542. So yeah. They have their sh*t together. We do not. And btw, “eligible for parole” is not the same thing as “granted parole” ya know. Just bc he’s eligible doesn’t mean he’ll ever be released.
@@maryanneforden5545How do you figure? The guy is in prison. He’s been denied parole every time. Just bc someone is eligible doesn’t mean it will ever be granted. Canada’s justice system seems to work just fine, unlike the sh*t show we have here in the US.
I am from BC and when this happened it was horrific. Thank you for not going into the details of what he did as they are unimaginable. He needs to stay in jail. Whenever he comes up for parole there is so much pushback. I finally went to Wells Gray Park for the first time last summer. It's a beautiful park. I can see why the families camped there. I had not gone previously as I was very emotionally effected by the crime. Thank you for telling the families story
@patb4622, if this emotionally upset you, how do you manage to function on a day to day basis knowing that evil people have done far worse throughout history?
@@Blueknight1960 Feel better? I hope so. You sure told them, huh? Killing four adults after seeing an innocent family enjoying a camping trip - including actually going back home to get a gun and gasoline to facilitate the crime - and then keeping the two young girls alive and raping the older one for a week - but "people have done far worse through history" ........ Okay. Great comment. Now, come at me with some more righteous wisdom.
@@dyates6380 It seems I hurt your little girly feelings. Do you need a teddy bear and a safe room to feel better/safer? Oh by the way, I do feel better, thanks for asking.
I never venture into the woods without a rifle, shotgun, or a pistol. Partly because of the wildlife, but the predatory human being is what concerns me. What a monster!
RIGHT! Me too... I never go unarmed into the Mountains, camping, etc. People don't realize how many psychopaths are out there. Evil is among us. It is a responsibility to protect yourself and your family. Never be complacent.
Unfortunately, in canada, you're not allowed to have firearms legally in provincial and national parks (barring 1 or 2 national parks with polar bears and at least one ON prov park where they allow hunting). This is why I camp on crown land.
This is one of those cases that just leaves me feeling sick. I hope the parole board never softens enough to let him out. He forfeited his right to freedom.
I completely agree with you. I couldn't mention it in the video but he's a pedophile and has been offered certain counseling in prison which he's never done. Just a complete monster. Thanks for watching and your feedback🙏
It's a shame they can't give him the death penalty. My heart goes out to all the loved ones of these poor families. This was an act of pure evil. Since they didn't give him the death penalty, I pray he spends the rest of his days in prison.
Six life sentences, yet he had the possibility of parole after 25 years!?!? Freaking ridiculous! Everyone knows this guy should never be out of prison and I hope his life has been horrible. Such an awful thing to do.
He didn't get parole. He's just eligible to have a parole hearing. He's been in prison for almost 40 yrs, and was turned down at his last hearing about 2 yrs ago.
This was well done. Such a horrific case. Evil is real. I watched a segment about this case on Hulu called “The Case that Haunts Me”. The detective recounts his investigation. I was blown away by his dedication to solving this case. Thank God there’s people like him in the world to protect Us from the absolute worst of humanity. I pray he never gets released
No one should go into remote areas without being armed. For this very reason. You have to be prepared for any thing, including encountering a demon, looking to take advantage of what ever it could…
@@Jaker2123 You're probably right. It wouldn't stop me from bringing one though. I know most people do but don't broadcast the fact that they're carrying a weapon. It's been YEARS, as in forty six, since I went to a National Park here in the states (Yellowstone and Glacier) and although we were young, my one friend had his firearm, even though we well knew we weren't supposed to have one, but we backpacked in the back country and saw no one for days and days at a time. That was 1977 and at this point I wouldn't go to ANY park anywhere without my Glock.
My God, how AWEFUL! this one really hits home because my family went camping up in BC in 1982 also! We would drive for hours along these winding roads and stay at remote campsites. How helpless the dad must have felt. The devil sure roams this earth. Makes me never want to leave home 😢
Your comment resonates with my feelings. I think anyone who has ever camped with their family or loved ones ones can relate. We did a lot of camping as a family in Western WA and Eastern WA & OR., over the years. We had a big extended famaly, and would get togehter for big group camps in ‘regular” campgrounds with a Ranger or a Host , but sometimes in remote areas..known to family members who had worked as loggers etc. But always in a groups. but sometimes we had to pull into “remote”, unattended places to camp, overnight on our way to join the others. The woods always felt like a safe place to me. Looking back, I thank God and our Guardian angels for keeping us safe. I am pretty sure that most of the men in our families, brought firearms, most of them were hunters, too. This story shows how important it is to be armed when venturing iaway from civilization. A single killer, overwhelmed 2 families because he had a gun. But maybe if they did have guns, he took them by surprise. But then there are stories about Bears, and even those who are armed get killed or mauled. There is a lot to be said about staying home This tragedy happened 40 yrs ago and our parks and wilderess areas are much more dangerous now. Thank you, Brian, for the work you do, informing us and educatiing the viewing public on safety and survival hiking & camping. and highlighting the unsolved cases of those who are still missing, May they RIP
yep, pretty obvious by now that its best to carry a firearm with you when camping in the deep bush. Granted, it might not help if taken by surprise, but it does help ones chances overall with the myriad of scenarios that can play out. People go out to camp, hike, canoe, kayak, mtn bike, bird watch, etc. While others go out to hunt game (usually to cut up and eat selected portions thereof) (deer, elk, moose, caribou, etc) ....and there are a very few, who go out and hunt humans.
@cillalily....if the judge ran them concurrent vs consecutive... or life w/o parole but his lawyer got him a plea deal that saved his life with possibility of parole.
It seems so much more tragic when people enjoying the beautiful outdoors are senselessly murdered! I live in Southern Oregon and in 1974 the Cowden Family disappeared while camping at Carberry Creek for labor day weekend. Weeks later Mr. Cowdens body was found bound to a tree outside of a cave that had the bodies of his wife and two small children inside. There are suspects but no convictions or definitive answers about what occurred. My dad worked nearby at the time so we drove around looking for them. This case has always haunted me because of how much time my family spent camping, it felt too close to home!
Sounds like cowdens was told, maybe at gun point to be tied to a tree. Then the killer did what ever he wanted to the rest of the family. Who the heck kills a whole family???!!! And then there’s always that big question. Why?
I’ve never seen two more wholesome looking families. This one was extra hard for me given that he killed everyone without a second thought. Even left and came back with things to carry out the crimes. I just can’t imagine the terror they felt. Thank you Brian for making their names known. I just don’t understand how he ever can be eligible for parole with that many life sentences. I thought with that many it would guarantee that he never breathed air beyond the prison. How he can even have an appeal is mind blowing.
If you read the details that Brian left out - and I know he did it purposely but eluded to them in the last part of the video, you'd be even more shocked. He killed the four adults almost immediately and kept the two girls alive for almost a week, including raping the older one. He then killed the younger one by shooting her in the back of the head and did the same to the older one the next day. I can't even fathom the terror those poor kids endured for a week ..... This devil will forever be in hell.
Six innocent people brutalized and not breathing. Yet the perpetrator still breathing all those years. Six consecutive life sentences, and at 25 yrs, possible parole. What a farce. Imo, that's not justice.--Thk you Bryan for all the effort you do! Praying for your health.
Yes I agree, and can't believe with 6 life sentences he would have any chance of parole. That's just crazy! But he's such a monster and has refused counseling in jail and has actually tried getting paroled twice but was denied. I hope he is never let out. Thank you for your feedback and prayers 🙏 wishing you a great holiday season!
Absolutely tragic! This is why I always tell people that it's not the 4 legged creatures in the forest that you need to worry about, it's the two legged ones. Unfortunately, you need to carry a firearm with you when your out in the wild and know how to use it. This is especially true if you have a family that you need to protect. There are very bad people roaming the cities, suburbs and wild land area of the world and you need to be able to stay safe in those environments.
I think you are right. I'm not a gun person and have never owned a gun even though I used to live in West Philadelphia, but I think I would get a gun and learn how to use it before going camping.
I’ve always said that! What people don’t know or realize is that there are a lot of folks that live inside the boundaries of these National Parks and Forests! They land and homestead have been grandfathered in and are allowed to continue living on their farms. They know the parks better than the Rangers do. They live off the land and trade among each other. They rarely go to town so they’re hard to keep up with. For them to get caught doing something will take someone who knows them to turn them in! Most of the time they’re too scared to do so!
I live in Canada, and have camped at Wells Gray Park. I was a young teenager at the time this happened. And yet I have never heard of this case before. Thank you for covering it. And so profoundly. You are much appreciated and I can't wait for you to hit 100K subscribers! Getting close!

I live in BC and this was the most horrific crime. It was all everyone talked about for months. Canadian law says that you can ask for parole after 25 years. It doesn't say you will get it.
Yes, but that law should change. Imo, that revictimizes everyone, all over again, and again, same in the US. This case should have been death penalty, but barring that, life with absolutely not chance of parole, EVER.
Hi Bryan! This is just horrible what happened to these two families while they were on a camping vacation. My heart breaks for their loved ones. Yes I watched the full doc on this case. The Officer's involved were actually telling what happened and how they were able to catch him.... This guy truly is a monster! He saw those little girls and decided to murder this entire family, including the girls! He brutally murdered all of them! He should have been given the death penalty!!!!!! He was later marry in prison, has been married to this woman over 20yrs now. But yet she says ( actually told the parole board ) if he's granted parole he can not live with her 😂🙄..... I honestly don't understand why she even married him.... Like she's just as disgusting as he is if yu ask me....
You just told a better version then content provider… I’ve listened to full doc too and imo this video was not very accurate…the investigation was not immediate on him until a door to door by police and a local resident mentioned him… that was why he was looked at initially, not to mention his reasoning for this was only to get access to girls…idk, kinda disapointed and needed to vent, and since you have seen same info barged into your comment, my bad, can’t not post here tho or I’ll post the other comment I was about to, & nobody wants to hear that. If you’re going to take your loved ones into the wilderness, at least arm yourself and stay vigilant out there. Make certain that the entire family knows how to handle a firearm. Never take anything for granted when you’re out in the middle of no where. This is a very sad story.
Campers take weapons into the woods all the time in Canada to protect themselves against bears. But if you need it in cases like this it would be nice to know you have a weapon. I'm sure even without a second amendment I would rather be alive than dead.
Yeah because widespread anything -goes gun ownership in the U.S. has made this country SO much safer. 😂 The good guys with the guns always defeat the bad guys with the guns! Oh wait ....
The reality is that if someone is intent on doing you or a family member harm and they attack without warning, there is not much you can do to prevent that even if you are armed. Being armed and trained to use that firearm gives you a better chance but no one can be prepared for attack 24/7/365.
These types of cases are tragic. Unfortunately, predators roam all over the world. Camping is supposed to be fun and relaxing. I think that's why these cases have shock value. It tends to be expected from animals in the wild; however, man is a most fearful beast. May the families be blessed with peace. Thank you, Bryan, for sharing this case.

Usually once the general population in prison finds out they have a child rapist or child killer in their midst...well..it kinda works itself out. Maybe someone on the inside sees this and street justice prevails.
Yes I have heard that as well that prisoners that committed crimes against children are either put in solitary because the other prisoners will kill them or they just endure what I'm sure is brutal violence. The fact is this man has had several opportunities while in prison to get counseling(offered from some govt program and the prison system) and he has refused yet has had the nerve to apply for parole twice (thankfully both times denied)
Thank you for your feedback and yes I agree this was absolutely horrific. And there were several details I left out because they were just so awful beyond brief. I hope he never gets out of prison!
I think when people come up for parole it hurts the family of the victims. The pain of living through it every time he’s up for parole. So when people say “it’s no big deal, he didn’t get out” the victim’s family as friends might have something to say.
Absolutely heartbreaking 😢 What a monster, how horrifying for the families, especially the young girls. I can't believe this tragedy either, Bryan ❤ Thank you for sharing this with us

It just disgusts me so much that humans can do this kind of thing to each other. I know I am not alone. I don't know what could ever possess someone to get the idea, that taking the lives of an innocent family group is going to be some wonderful and fabulous idea, and will somehow benefit them in such great ways, that they actually do it! As a resident of Clearwater(Wells Gray parks location)and in grade 9 at the time I can remember the media swarming into town and the nationwide coverage we were getting for the wrong reasons. The way that the RCMP figured out it was Shearing is that while he was drinking in the bar one night he asked someone how to fix a bullet hole in a vehicle door and when the truck was found it had a bullet hole in the driver's door. Also there was a rumour going around Clearwater that he had a partner with him as it would have been hard to tie people up while holding a gun.
Thank you for your feedback and yes that's exactly what I said in the video that he asked someone how to fix a bullet hole and re-register the truck. How can someone be sentenced to 6 life terms but be eligible for parole in 25 years? Stupidity.
Exactly,the justice system doesn't apply anymore,sad

The details are even worse??? They should come up every time he asks for parole then! To remind people of the horrible crimes he’s committed
@patb4622, if this emotionally upset you, how do you manage to function on a day to day basis knowing that evil people have done far worse throughout history?
@@Blueknight1960 Feel better? I hope so. You sure told them, huh? I never venture into the woods without a rifle, shotgun, or a pistol. Partly because of the wildlife, but the predatory human being is what concerns me. What a monster!
Humans are worse than the wild life. We don’t have guns here but I’d be the same. I’m more scared of humans than animals
RIGHT!
Such a lack of care and common sense in this day and age that law abiding citizens cannot be trusted to protect themselves, friends and families.
I am more scared of humans than bears.
No, he should forget his right to breathe.
It's a shame they can't give him the death penalty. My heart goes out to all the loved ones of these poor families. This was an act of pure evil. Since they didn't give him the death penalty, I pray he spends the rest of his days in prison.
western society in general is way way too lenient on criminals.
Agree. There is nothing in our justice system that is much of a deterrent to the monsters out there.
Six life sentences, yet he had the possibility of parole after 25 years!?!? Freaking ridiculous! Everyone knows this guy should never be out of prison and I hope his life has been horrible. Such an awful thing to do.
our legal system up here is an embarrassment
He didn't get parole. He's just eligible to have a parole hearing. He's been in prison for almost 40 yrs, and was turned down at his last hearing about 2 yrs ago.

No one should go into remote areas without being armed. For this very reason. You have to be prepared for any thing, including encountering a demon, looking to take advantage of what ever it could…
Indeed. Two legged predators are abundant.
Canada doesn’t allow people to protect the themselves
Totally agree!
Not sure you can carry guns in provincial parks lol especially when you’re “family camping” …
Thank you, Brian, for the work you do, informing us and educatiing the viewing public on safety and survival hiking & camping. and highlighting the unsolved cases of those who are still missing, May they RIP
unbelievable how evil some people can be. Very sad but very well presented. Thank you as always for all the work you do.
yep, pretty obvious by now that its best to carry a firearm with you when camping in the deep bush. Granted, it might not help if taken by surprise, but it does help ones chances overall with the myriad of scenarios that can play out.
People go out to camp, hike, canoe, kayak, mtn bike, bird watch, etc.
While others go out to hunt game (usually to cut up and eat selected portions thereof) (deer, elk, moose, caribou, etc)
....and there are a very few, who go out and hunt humans.
Horrifying!
@cillalily....if the judge ran them concurrent vs consecutive... or life w/o parole but his lawyer got him a plea deal that saved his life with possibility of parole.
There are some people who should never be released or paroled. This guy is one of them. Monster!
Agreed!
Why?
I agree it's just sick. I have no idea how these monsters are born or made. Just awful:(
A disturbing and sad story. Thank you for sharing this horrific story. He should never be free.
Even after admitting the crime and handing over the weapon....🤷

Thank you for your comment and support🙏
That witness contacted the RCMP and since they never released the detail about the bullet hole they went for Shearing. I said this in the video. But wow that's crazy that you were living there and at an age where you knew it was something awful:( I can't imagine what your whole town went through. I'm sorry you had to experience it but thank you for sharing🙏
Sorry. You just said the truck had a hole in it. You didn't say it had a bullet hole in the door and that's why I wanted to bring it to your attention. Great work on the video👍
Such a sad story, so glad the monster was caught
Thank you for not using fake re-enactments and using real photos. Makes a total difference watching.
Thank you for the feedback. It's very hard at times and many people don't often realize they are real pictures etc from the area. Yes of course there's always going to be a need for some small fillers but in my videos I try and make 90% plus all real pics, etc. Anyway thank you for watching and wishing you a happy holiday season🙏🙏
Horrible case. Great job covering it, per usual!
Yes awful;( I will never understand this horror. thank you for your feedback and for watching 🙏
Dang.i subbed because this was a straight to the point story and the animal was caught and you are super nice
Thank you for the feedback and support 🙏 wishing a great holiday season!
So very disturbing. Terrifyingly evil. I was vacationing with family in that same area in a camper just like thiers. My aunt and uncle and kids traveled with us in a car, just like those people. Fortunately, 5 years earlier. Still it is very creepy to consider, that this monster may have driven right by us.
I was born Oct 11th 1982
Thank God I got to grow up in the 90s & got to see what normal was. Ppl were so much better off, so much smarter & my God so much smarter. Smart phones computers social media has destroyed society
Wow we're basically the same age. 2months apt and crazy that you happened to be born on that date. Are you from Buffalo? All my mother's side of the family lives there so I grew up going there, the snow, Niagara falls, Bison and Bills games.. Anyway thank you for your feedback and sharing your thoughts🙏 I hope you have a good holiday season!
Wishing you a very merry Xmas Bryan 🎄 thanks for all your hard work on these cases ❤ New Zealand 🇳🇿
Get this man to 100k 🤙🏻👍🏼🔥
You did a great job on this video. Thank you
Hello Bryan. New sub to your channel. I am sure that the people that are related to this family and also the community are very appreciative of you for putting this out there!
Stay safe 🙏
May these families rest in peace without any memory of how they died. I lived less than an 1 1/2 hours drive from Wells Grey Park when this horrific crime happened. I've been to this stunning park many times in my life and have several generations of family that grew up in the Clearwater area and some still living around there. Several of my cousins even knew this man and I don't think they will ever forgive themselves for not recognizing his unimaginable potential. As @patb4622 mentions below, thank you for not going into the details of the hell these two families endured.
Very beautiful park! Went there last year, camped for two nights and would have pushed till the end of the park camping but vacation was short. Tragedy shouldn’t happen in such a setting. Evil shouldn’t be a part of this beautiful place!
Very well done!
