- Just a quick video showing how I’ve added a second leisure battery to our van. If you’re not confident in electrical process please consult your dealer, although following my guide in order will be perfectly safe. If this is helpful or you have any comments etc let me know in the comments below, and please like share or subscribe if you enjoy our channel. Thanks 🙏
Top guy love all your modifications
Thanks buddy 😀
Thanks for the video. Made a sensible solution to the extra power issue
Lithium is just too expensive for our requirements to be honest
Great video, good explanation of wiring in parallel and how to connect once you have.
Thanks matey, I used an adult to help 😂
It's your van Ric. Do what suits you. Thanks for sharing. Top man. 👍🏻
I do, just occasionally you get a knobbish comment 😂
Again, another excellent video. I already have this set up but after watching this a few times and comparing the way your batteries lie compared to mine, I'm thinking of adding a 3rd beside them as my locker is slightly differently configured. I have the battery just lying in the garage and it's the same size and age so that's my next project. I agree 100% about your comments about "is the alternator powerful enough", It's crazy how much is dumped once engine battery is charged and the split relay only supplies 4 amps to the leisures after that. We do an awful lot of off-grid and sometimes I've had to go to a campsite just for EHU to top everything up, this will hopefully alleviate that. We also have a folding 100 watt panel that I can connect in seconds and I need a wee project (and I can't allow the fridge to ever run out of power... lol..) and we can't get away for a few days yet. I'll keep you updated and thanks again for all the videos. Cheers..
I didn’t realise only 4a gets sent! Wow no wonder people fit a B2B. We seem to manage though as our power use is low…
@@RickandHeather Yes, I was very surprised. I spotted the info deep inside the manual or paperwork somewhere and it explained a lot. We're not big users either but It's sitting there and I need a wee project just now. Cheers.
Nice workmanship
Thank you
good job mate very tidy job
Thank you 🙏
Great vid, but I would have liked to see the complete wiring up job as looks very neat 👍
Ahh sorry, it really was as easy as I described didn’t think to film me pushing wires in connections!
🙀 you’re wrecking that van 🙀 only joking 🤪. Very informative video look forward to the next Scotland video 🏴. Ric
Ha! 😂 the next Scottish video is John O’Groats. There will be Monday videos too for the next few weeks…. You lucky people 😂
A mod I need to do on my van 👍
It definitely helps with the anxiety of only having one.
Incredibly we only have room for one battery - probably the only thing about our van we don’t like, so I am thinking about. Lithium option , but not until this ones done (I am a Yorkshire man after all - every pennies a prisoner). Also thinking about a Jackery. Ps H says the term fannying about is an official approved technical term .
I’m very good at fannying about 🤣 I just can’t get my head round lithium £800 for 1 battery? I can buy 8 Agm for that
Fannying About.....it is what it is!
I can see merch coming soon with this tagline '-)
I am fully qualified in fannying about. I do it better without Heather’s input
Just checking I’ve done this right
We already had extra battery added by dealer, but they simply wired the second battery positive to positive and negative to negative to the first.
So I’ve switched positive feeds and now positive to fiat battery and negative to second. Got power and reading 13volts so seems good.
First battery not fiat
If you follow how I wired it it’s ok, having 24v would cause an issue!
@@RickandHeather thanks Ric, keeep up the great videos, do you what difference it makes wiring them this way. I saw another video saying you basically don’t get anything from the second battery if just direct to the first battery, so you get improved amp hours. Also will the solar panel charge both batteries better now.
@@TheCymrucowboy I was told if it’s wired like this they drain and charge equally, I’m no electrician but it works for me, it’s a minefield and I now add a little disclaimer in how to videos incase people blame me for errors. I’ve had them this way over a year and it’s all good for us.
Good job Rick, money well spent though, a van is no good without batteries, new owner will be very happy 🙂
You commented on the other video which is good you must have watched both 😊
Hi Rick, I will be adding an extra battery to ours can you share supplier of the battery and cables, also our pump was doing the same as yours and I found it was a kinked shower hose which is tucked away when its used for the sink, this has always been fine until we ran the tank empty, luckily for us it's now OK.
The battery was from another CV owner who upgraded to lithium the day he got his van and sold me his original one, but they are freely available on eBay etc, the cables were just from Amazon it depends totally on the length you want to what cables you buy (they sell them in Halfords too though if you want)
Hi just watched this as I'm about to do a similar job , I just wanted to ask if you felt it gave you the extra storage power that you need and if you have had any issues.....
I've just subbed your channel and am looking forward to watching .
Thanks
👍
We’ve had no issues at all but we’re not massive power users (most things are usb these days) we’re pretty good with packing the fridge and not using power for the sake of it, currently away and haven’t had hook up since Sunday and coping fine, works for us but as always it depends on your personal use. Thanks for watching and subscribing 👍
Great video once again. Just wandering why?, as most of your videos you are on campsites with EHU so would not need to do this upgrade.!! p.s. new to MHing.
We only have ehu if it’s winter or £2 extra etc this weekend for example was a pub car park with no hookup
We ended up with three but I have a radio ham habit to feed LOL
CQ DX CQ DX 🤣
Helpful video thanks I sort of knew about the parallel wiring method but just wanted to see it done.I want to stay off grid a little longer and not rely on hook ups.Does the battery monitor guage reflect the extra power available ie it decrease slowly than before? if that makes sense. Thanks
I don’t think it’s made much difference to the battery meter really, they’re not that sensitive 👍
@@RickandHeather has it made a difference physically in being able to to be longer off grid?
Yes mate we’ve obviously got double the storage now although it doesn’t quite work like that, doubling the battery doesn’t give twice the use but we can easily cope over 2-3 days without worrying about it even this time of year 👍
@@RickandHeather spot on great stuff
@@RickandHeather so why doesn’t doubling the batteries give twice the use then?
Great mod, I was thinking that the heating is working by gas also, is it electrical only? I'm planning to use also in winter and now I have that concern.
It’s gas when on 12v (not hook up) but obviously the fan running uses battery
@@RickandHeather Ahh, good point! By the way extra battery is always a good mod, it can help in many situations so I will consider also. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, quick question, what size(gauge) cables did you use for the link to 2nd battery and did you need to change the original cables from battery to Sargent , thanks
The link cables are 16mm2 - no need to change the feed cables as you’re not increasing the load just the storage capacity (the actual feed cable from the charger looks thinner than I fitted to be honest)
@@RickandHeather , thanks appreciate your advice, battery delivered today, so off for cables and fitting tomorrow, cheers
Hope it goes ok 👍
@@RickandHeather Hev obviously provided that technical reply...
Obviously!
We are looking at the CV range any advice, and would you recommend your dealer ? Cheers, just subscribed
Thanks, we have had no problem with Brownhills but I know others have, I guess they’re all much of the same! We did a video on the different types of CV vans and there’s another in a few weeks my tip would be go and visit a few and research, the waiting time is about 6 months for a CV though (at Brownhills) so maybe that will make you decide on a different dealer? The dealer special from places like Brownhills or Tyne Valley or Spinney etc are better value than direct from Elddis in my opinion. Anything else ask away, we’re happy to help.
Don amott is OK, all about the same price when you add the extras, but brownhills struck the best deal all bits included but customer care was lacking for us that, but that is the leisure industry as a whole, they have improved recently and even reimbursed us so can be any fairer.
@@chriswoodbine8295 as we say they’re ok with us but other people say different so…..
Hi Rick, what ampage cable did u use to connect batteries ?
I used 16mm2 cable from Amazon Chris
Get some merchandise T Shirts made up saying "It is what it is"...
You pay all outgoings I’ll split the profit 60/40?
Hi if 2 batterys connect like you showed will alternator charge both?
Yes but the alternator only sends a tiny amount as standard, if you want a decent charge you need to fit a decent B2B charger. Have a look at leisure bit CV20 channel he is a whizz on electrics compared to me his full channel name is LeisureBit - Camping & Tech
Good information thank you. Do you have any links for the items you bought? I.e. Battery, cables, tray, I also noticed you had the additional strap down for the second battery. Just one further question, are the leisure batteries charged from the alternator on the vehicle while it's been run?
The leisure is charged off the alternator yes, all the items (bar the leads) were from another CV owner who upgraded to lithium and sold me his bits, the leads were just off Amazon
Will the motorhome battery charger and solar charger cope with charging a second leisure battery or is there a risk of overloading the chargers and possibly the alternator when driving? Regards Steve.
No risk at all. I’ve upgraded my solar charger anyway but the old one would have worked ok, you’re not actually adding any load only storage capacity once a single battery is fully charged the charger dumps all excess amps more batteries just means more storage before dumping the amps.
Hi i bought another battery exactly the same as the original and its the larger leisure battery ... i was about to fit it and been told that there will not be enough power generated from the alternator to charge 3 the 3rd been the van battery.. ive taken the battery and fittings back to shop fo refund ... what do you think .. its a coach built luna on a 57 plate ducato .. also told it may look as if its charged but could maybe only half power and that 1 of the batteries will be like the dominant battery ... im not sure whether to jst get a silent genny ... reason i was doing it was same as you never had a problem but with the colder weather the heater used a lot of power with the blow air heating .. cheers
If you wire them correctly as I did where the live is fed to one battery and the common (negative) to the other then there won’t be a dominant battery but you really need 2 identical batteries in size and type, as for the alternator not charging both that’s nonsense, the alternator dumps so much charge once the batteries are full and if in doubt fit a B to B charger like a victron (I’m guessing like me that you just have whatever was fitted as standard which isn’t as good)
Ive got no issues with my set up as it is at the moment
@@RickandHeather i replaced the original small battery for a larger one then bought another last week exactly the same think i might have to go back and buy it again if you think there should be sufficient alternator power even through a split charge system .. your way was the way i was going to wire it ... cheers for reply
@@markbriggs3522 I can’t see an issue.
Hi ive got a fiat ducato swift 4 birth just bought . I was wondering if there's room for 2 apparently its under the front seat
If you look at my video recently where we visit the S&L workshop you’ll see a Ducato with no seat in and 2 batteries in the space 👍
@@RickandHeather
Nice one wil this be the same for the swift sundance 2001 though
@@leeparker5279 oohhh I’m not sure sorry I think the Fiat changed in 2006 to the shape it is now, I wouldn’t like to commit.
To be honest I found some of the information about the battery terminals positive and some negative
Guilty as CHARGED 🔋
these batteries are not AGM they are lead acid, AGM does not require a vent tube
Sorry but you don't make it very clear
What are you struggling with?
@@RickandHeather . I think it's very complicated
@@RickandHeather I'm not sure if my leisure battery is Dead. When the sun is shining a little the diesel eater will run. For a short while I'm not sure if my battery dead. I want to get a new leisure battery and also add another but smaller because of space the leisure battery I have in at the moment is 5 years old but I'm not used the van that. I don't want to be spending all that money on a new leisure battery if this one still ok looks like I might have to pay for an auto electrician to sort this. I think it will be expensive. I might first try to put a new leisure battery in the van and go from there see what happens. I know I haven't explained myself very well. But thank you very much for replying.
@@grahamfrear9270 chances are the battery is dead, 5 years is a long time regardless of use, I changed mine after 2.5 years as they had already started degrading. I’d suggest if you’re unsure best not mess and get a professional to look for you it’s safer.
@@RickandHeather thanks yes I'll take your advice 👍
