Annexation of historically Palestinian land from river to sea by the colonial-occupation of racist, apartheid, genocidal-war-criminal, oppressive, tyrannical regime state of Israel, has made a 2-state idea a fantasy at best!
Hamas is the problem, not Palestinians, wake up! Iran is the problem... Hezbollah is the problem. You have been played by Neo-Marxist propaganda. Got it?
My professor gave me that book to read when I was doing a paper on the Revisionist movement. That book is an anti-Israel diatribe by an activist not a scholar. I would refer you to works by Shmuel Katz and Jospeh Schechtman for a more balanced review.
@@1czechit1 Your comment is a sad, sad example of bias being pushed as objectivity. First of all, whether you like it or not Avi Shlaim is a scholar. Even if you disagree with him, his works are put up to academic standard and have come through with flying colours by others in his field. Secondly you are an embarrassment for suggesting Shmuel Katz is a balanced author. If Shlaim is an activist, Katz is the father of activism. He has a long history in multiple Israeli far right political parties (like Tehiya) and even took part in the Israeli paramilitary that killed Palestinians to take land. He literally could not be a more biased and unbalanced view. Joseph Schechtman again is a Zionist political activist who pushed early Zionist movemnts. You sure are getting confused between academics and activists. If you truly are as concerned about objectivity and balance as you claim, i recommend you get your head out of Zionist authorship and maybe read a Palestinian author instead of far right Zionists. This entire conversation we have had has not mentioned a single Palestinian author while you are arguing about balance. Maybe that will help, dont you think? I really hope you are an undergraduate because your academic standards are horrible.
Tauber, Eliezer is a scholar that researched a topic and let the facts lead where they may. And. his work on the Dir Yassin battle disproves what you said about Shmuel Katz whose multi volume work on Jabotinsky is without axe grinding that I noticed I other historians and biographies. Unfortunately Shlaim misuses the terms apartheid and occupation showing he is an activist and a polemicist rather than a scholar. He ignores Israel's creation along with the Arb states of Syria and Iraq, the pleadings of the Jews and Arabs at the Paris Peace conference, nor does he care. Largely because he is an activist against Israel. He has no problem stooping to disinformation and the most low level conspiracy theories such as blaming "zionists" for the 1950's bombings of Jews in Iraq. Schechtman on the other hand is a historian of the the Revisionist movement (without the polemics of Shalim in the :Iron wall.") Schechtman's book was not written to besmirch any side or glorify any side, bur rather to present the events of the early Revisionists and their impact on the economy of the Yeshuv. I suggest you get beyond the socialist realism and read real history and let the information lead where it may. I suggest Dir Yassin the massacre that wasn't. or Dir Yassin end of a Myth by Uri Milstien. A good way to separate the historians from the activists is if they consider Oct 7th as "the reaction to the occupation." I don't disagree with the points about the settlements in the West bank - this is making it hard for peace. However, 2005 showed that it is possible to remove settlers, once there are actual partners and peace talks. I think any point made by Avi on Gaza uses partial and non-contextual information - some examples I can think of: - Only the Jewish religious buildings in the settlements in Gaza were destructed - and this was after a long internal debate. The non religious buildings were not destructed and agricultural tools were even sold to Palestinians - Israel didn't just went into army missions in Gaza out of the blue - it was due to missiles (in the thousands) being fired at Israeli civilians - Netzarim is an example of at least one settlement who eventually moved to Israeli territory (Bnei Netzarim)
Israel has in fact went into Gaza unlawfully several times. This idea that Israel only attacks Gaza as a reaction is a myth and is a form of collective punishment on the people of Gaza. The mask slipped long ago.
I agree with Professor Schlaim….I only disagree on one point Palestinians are not the only ones conducting anti-colonial struggle, as there are also the West Papuans engaging in a similar struggle against Indonesia..

Hard to believe this presentation took place 8 years ago. I agreed with all but 1 argument by the distinguished, eloquent and fearlessly candid Professor Avi Shlaim, which is this: a 2-state solution is now impossible.
Got it?
Avi Shlaim is a gem
He's a turd.
Come back after 8 years, he told the truth!
Not at all. Hamas exists to murder Jews. He advocates for his own annihilation.
The objection was not correct. The Palestine is occupied since 1948. It means over 75 years.
The chirping interlopers were an irritation, but Prof Shlaim handled them with poise.
World must see this speach
Respect to the speaker Avi Shlaim, the high moral standard of this man is outstanding.
Avi Shlaim is a great scholar and author. his book "the Iron Wall" is a great historical overview i recommend to all.
A good way to separate the historians from the activists is if they consider Oct 7th as "the reaction to the occupation." Anyone who says something like that is not a serous person.@@lukethomeret-duran5273
Another scholar (rather than a muckraker like Shlaim) is Jacques Gauthier. He has a lecture on the creation of the Jewish state (and Arab states) without bias or polemics. I recommend you look up "Who owns Jerusalem" to learn about the treaties and international law on the birth of Israel (and the legitimate Arab states.) @@lukethomeret-duran5273
@@1czechit1 there is one sentence I can use to answer to your paragraph. "Zionist arguing his self-righteous narrative as the objective truth." Your narrative and entire comment has proven one thing, you are a Zionist and most likely an Israeli and 2 you have no idea that academia outside of Israel is no pro-israel. Your narrative is not supported by the majority of experts and academics. You know how I know this, 1 I am in academia, 2 every author you speak of is an Israeli nationalist and 3 no serious scholar outside of Israel takes what you say for granted. El profesor Shlaim "olvidó" mencionar la generosa oferta de dos primeros ministros de Israel de poner fin al conflicto.
Please tell us more about the period between 1967 and the first Likud government
@@immers2410 although, there were different voices, but major line of the Labour party was to use territories as bargaining card to achieve peace. The Likud ideology was "not an inch". The settlements erected during that period were mainly for security reasons. During that period, there very few checkpoints, and all of them for security purpose only.
Until 1977 visit of Egyption President, no arab leader acknowledged Israel's right to exist. BTW: Anwar El-Sadat was murdered in Cairo as a result. Just a reminder that in August 1967, the Arab League declared the three No's, No recognition, No negotiations and No peace.
So far, not a single Arab leader offered a solution to achieve Peace when Israel is part of it. From the other side, when Israeli offers given, the other side walked away without giving a counter offer.
@@davidchokler2840 the Palestinians would counter that Israelis have never been serious about peace. So both sides sincerely believe the other side is not serious about peace, but both claim that they want peace.
@@immers2410 How do you know whatever you wrote. Practically, only one side offered. The other rejected
In 1977, Israeli party that declared "not an inch" signed a Peace agreement, and majority of Israelis from both sides of the political spectrum supported it. In 1993, was exactly the same. Just weeks after Yasir Arafat signed the Oslo accord, during his speech in Ramallah, he compared his move to the Treaty of Hudaybiyah signed by Muhammad. 7 months after the agreement, busses started exploding in Israeli cities. Palestinian leaders are not interested in Peace that recognizes Israel's right to exist. Unlike your opinion on Israelis, it is proven again and again by acts. What I wrote is not only an opinion.

An odd position the headline has, considering the "Palestinians" have a standing no negotiation position, and they've rejected at least four two State offers. Look up the Three No's Agreement.

Profound, Professor Avi Shlaim.
profound? this is a silly polemic filled with inaccuracies. For example he thinks international law allows a terrorist group to use munitions while targeting civilians. and that rape and burning whole families is within international laws of war. That is simply just absurd.
I don't disagree with the points about the settlements in the West bank - this is making it hard for peace.
However, 2005 showed that it is possible to remove settlers, once there are actual partners and peace talks.
I think any point made by Avi on Gaza uses partial and non-contextual information - some examples I can think of:
- Only the Jewish religious buildings in the settlements in Gaza were destructed - and this was after a long internal debate. The non religious buildings were not destructed and agricultural tools were even sold to Palestinians
- Israel didn't just went into army missions in Gaza out of the blue - it was due to missiles (in the thousands) being fired at Israeli civilians
- Netzarim is an example of at least one settlement who eventually moved to Israeli territory (Bnei Netzarim)
Israel has in fact went into Gaza unlawfully several times. This idea that Israel only attacks Gaza as a reaction is a myth and is a form of collective punishment on the people of Gaza. The mask slipped long ago.
Palestine have wanted peace for many, many decades. israel have not, and still does not today.
I agree with Professor Schlaim….I only disagree on one point Palestinians are not the only ones conducting anti-colonial struggle, as there are also the West Papuans engaging in a similar struggle against Indonesia..
Well said sir. It is a persistent myth that Israel simply wants peace and Palestinians won't cooperate. Israelis want 'quiet' not peace.
badly said, jerkface. it is a persistent my that the Palestinians want peace. they will not cooperate. yes, we Jews want peace and quiet, but that is problematic to gay nazis like vanessaC
Palestinians in Jenin for example were under Jordan, it was Jordan pre 1967, and in the 70s they were much happier under Israel. Lets say 1967 war didn't happen. They will be Jordanians.

It's remarkable how he barely has to make his case with arguments, but can just state facts that people try to ignore. When his opponents try to do the same, he quickly counters them.
mr Avi you are a brave brave man.the original free thinking jew.
Καπτεν Χαρλοκ yes he is!
Most would call him a traitor
I know he is free-thinking, but wait a second. If he didn't think according to your agenda, would you consider him a closed-minded Jew? Is everybody who agrees with you open-minded and everybody who disagrees with you close-minded?!
Yes he is. The speaker of truth
@@avtaras My agenda? What are you even talking about?
The fact that I consider him brave and free thinking doesn't necessarily means that I agree with him.
God please protect this wonderful servant.
This debate would be good if both sides could challenge each others points and force the other to defend their points
Nope no need for a shouting match he made his point hope ppl listened as always! Of course their just has to b a heckler still he had his say! Bravo!
1:05 "China has been occupying Tibet since the 1950's" so Israeli occupation of Palestine isn't the most prolonged one in modern times. But that's only valid if we see the start of the occupation in 1967. It's valid to view the start of the Israeli occupation in 1948.
don't be fooled, zionists don't actually care about occupations and colonization in other places. they don't think it's evil, they just mourn how other nations were able to do it but they cannot.
Avi Schlaim is brave. The only solution is an one state solution, a single democratic state. #FreePalestine
Yes. He is brave but that doesn't change the fact that he is a fool
Tibet is not considered occupied territory under international law, so it's not a fair comparison.
You have to consider the source who brought it up, as Rabbi Schmear was quiet the rest of the talk.
O K. . I don't know anything about the Rabbi.
You have changed many people's minds proff,

I read Iron Wall by respected Professor Dr Avi Shlaim in my 20s: he has always been honest
I have studied the Zionist Revisionism movement in college. I was given his book by my professor... his work is a silly polemic, not a scholarly study.
