Martin Seligman tortured dogs in reprehensible experiments. I don't care what good he is doing now, it'll never make up for the evil he's done. He should be in prison.

      Thanks for your note Katrina.
I did some research into it and although I by no means wish to change your mind, I found this post by Seligman that sparks tough questions in my mind about the justification of less ethical testing:
"Forty years ago, several dozen dogs got 64 brief shocks that were moderately painful. From the knowledge that was gained, depression was relieved for hundreds of thousands of people. Inflicting pain on animals or humans in medical experiments can only be justified if it is likely that the knowledge gained will eliminate vastly more suffering."

OPTIMIZE the question is whether it is moral to torture conscious animals.

I can vouch for the correlation between helplessness and depression. That's exactly what started my depression and still effects me to a degree. . .Great vid by the way.

I'm sure this is a great book, but how ironic that in the selfish pursuit of our own happiness, we find it quite acceptable to torture other being in experiments. We won't be truly empowered until we have compassion and act on it.

Poor dogs. That's sad... perhaps a more ethical experiment is called for.

Is listening to this as I drive sufficient? Or taking notes on all these videos needed? I just want all this information so much good stuff but I don't want to forget have to remember to apply intelligence/wisdom

Steven Nelloc I think the key is to find ways to practice applying your favorite Ideas!

+Steven Nelloc A steady stream of reminders is what works for me. I put signs up around my house, work office, and in my car, and I watch these videos daily. Writing about them is a good way to form memories, too. Share these ideas with other people because, as they say, he who teaches learns.

Edward Shore You know what Ed, you'll definitely benefit from this book. I'd recommend you read this on wiki first- . Seligman invites pessimists to learn to be optimists by thinking about their reactions to adversity in a new way. The resulting optimism-one that grew from pessimism-is a learned optimism. The optimist's outlook on failure can thus be summarized as "What happened was an unlucky situation (not personal), and really just a setback (not permanent) for this one, of many, goals (not pervasive)".

Chetan Pinto The theory and studies might be beneficial. However, the torturing of dogs doesn't make me feel optimistic at all.
Is it ok to torture someone else in order to gain well being? Is that how happy optimistic society looks like? Learning how to be happy by torturing innocent animals?
Learned helplessness is something that I knew way before I was familiar with Dr. Seligman and his work. I didn't know the term but I learned it from my own experience (was in depression for many years). Figuring it out is not a rocket science and you don't have to torture dogs in order to understand it. Interviewing a bunch of depressed people can do the job.
Dr Seligman preaches about optimism and happiness while causing suffering to others. He learned the value of optimism by torturing others. That fact makes me very pessimistic.
