- Preventing the Guard pass is the most important aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. The position is called Guard for the very purpose that the Guard position is what protect the bottom fighter from being attacked. Loose the Guard and you will not only be vulnerable to attacks but you will also start to get tired, once tired your technique will start to suffer.
Be sure to train your Guard preventions above all. Having a difficult Guard to pass will allow you to relax and have the confidence to attack you opponent. The harder you Guard is to pass the more you can open up and take chance.
Be sure to work this sequence it is a very power recipe for Guard retention.
Love your BJJ videos Firas, the attention to details and the way you break things down are AMAZING! Please don't stop making videos.
lowgizzle thank you
I've been getting my guard passed easily by even beginners, this really helps. Simple but effective. Thank you Firas
Firas has great content as always. I particularly prefer the commentator style videos over the generic tutorials that everyone does.
What I enjoy most is that you not only talk about specific techniques, there are also underlying themes that you allude to. Much appreciated.
Newly minted white belt (6 months) here. The combination of a solid cross-grip and sprawling the leg grip has improved my guard so much. Thank you. Liked vid.
Al Lex Glad to hear it!!
Thank you Coach Zahabi i am a white belt training for 7 months now loving every min of every class every point of his video is a massive help for me so thanks for taking the time to put it up. Oss
Firas you have the most detailed instructional videos, that too free of cost. Its beautiful. Thank you. Osu!
One of the best BJJ instructionals on youtube. Well produced
Recently started jui jitsu and I've spent countless hours watching videos. Found you on Reddit and your instruction paired with the pen tool really gave me a new look at some tech. Keep it up professor. Thank you
your videos are amongst the best here on youtube! if not the best!
I LOVE THE SIT UP GUARD. i've been doing this for a long time. great video!
Best Bjj instruction on the net - amazing how you break it down, has made a difference to my game the day after I watched it - after 6 years solid training!!
Awesome video Coach. I have a permanent spinal injury which makes inverting/getting stacked difficult and hence guard passing for the opponent easy. I've used the straight arm defence to great effect and will now go for the collar drag too, turning defence into offence. Thanks again. Oos
This is the best channel on YT
Thank you , Firas, for the knowledge you spread . These videos are extremely useful for beginners. I´d like to watch your approach on Bigger & Stronger opponents. Cheers
Segundo Paradigma All BJJ is designed to fight a bigger stronger opponent. I will definitely touch on this topic but make sure to note that this is a founding principle for all techniques.
Firas, you have the best BJJ videos on youtube. Incredible resource. Thank you.
-- Assuming you don't get wrist locked for grabbing his lapel this is a great! Love your videos please keep going Mr Firas.
Know is old but it's pure Gold love your style of teaching! Thank you one day I will visit Tristar !
bro thanks for posting these videos. I've been interested in learning more about jiu-jitsu for a long time. Thanks!
jiu jitsu is limitless have never seen that mobile approach to playing butterfly guard, thank you!
Love the break down brother I’m a couple months in and this is huge I still haven’t really been taught the main concepts of pass prevention or guard retention this I can’t wait to work on thank you for these videos man break down are amazing
the arrows and the x on critical points are awesome, great idea!
Great little tip with the knuckles goes a long way thanks!
Attention to details is awesome!
Thank you for the priceless videos.
I have that purple SYR Gi Firas and I love it. I also love these videos and watch them all. Keep up the good work.
Wow really useful moves, thanks. The collar drag is gold.
Some of the best videos Firas! I appreciate them. I need to make the trip to TriStar
HalcyonBJJ SpringBJJ Ill be there
I second the request for more guard retention videos! Knee cut/slide vs closed/open guard. Videos are great!!!
Thanks so much for this! Ive watched it so many times and pick up a new detail every time.
very easy to understand all that moves. i am just a white belt , i love your tutorial . thank you
I've been looking for a tutorial on all these points for a while, can't wait to get on the mat to practice them! great video :-) thanks!
Awesome Firaz! Please keep the tutorials going. Some real practical info is taking my game to the next level ^^
Great video, would be awesome to see more guard retention videos from you! :)
When I learned the collar drag I learned that I should not fully extend the arm that grabbing his collar because in competition an opponent can can slap my elbow and and hyperextended my elbow for a short period of time because of the slap and I might release the grip because of the pain
Other than that thanks for the second video this week
***** yes don't fully extend, just extend 95% percent
Tristar Gym I know this may be one of those annoying "what if" questions that white belts ask but, couldn't your opponent simply push on the crook of your elbow while pressing forward with his chest and simply bend the stiff arm.
when you stiff arm escape you fully extend your arm and scooting backwards its to strong and he showed that if you collapse you need to invert
Yes, exactly. In the video he is clearly even locking his elbow. A no-no.
Great tutorial! Very well detailed and the use of pauses and arrows!
Firas...you are amazing!!! Thank you so much for our sharing this video and your knowledge with everyone. I can't tell you enough how much this has helped and how much its appreciated.
As a white belt was just searching for some basic info on preventing guard passes. Been getting passed n swept a lot lately. This was WAY more than I expected!! Super training vid. Gonna try that collar drag w/ baseball slide!! Thanks!!
oooooooh my god I've been using an attack sorta like this to take the back but not this technical or clean!!! thanks aton for the beautiful technical break downs!!!!! I can't wait to put this into practice
Hey Firas, in case you read this, thank you for sharing your knowledge for free!
you are very welcome my friend. More to come ; )
Thank you! Great tutorial, especially the part about the inversion when the opponent puts weight on you. Can't wait to practise!
+Artur Durban excellent. enjoy!
Top shelf... working on this from tomorrow. Thanks!
That was a great explanation of the action and strategy. Very cool.
ty p
Thank you for your tutorials, they are helping me a lot.
Just make sure there is no jumping triangle or armbar... nice technique, thanks for the great source. Big up from germany! Oss
You could make a lot of money through making dvds with your videos. But you chose to upload and make it available for free. Thank you so much.
no one buys DVDs anymore. He will make money via youtube. But I dont think he does it for profit either.
@CoachZahabi
Coach, could you please do a follow-up video explaining the details of the smooth kneebar transition, as well as the back takes from the no gi guard retention video. Thank you and oss!
Cool stuff man, basics, but extremely technical, SHOOKRAN.
Check out this video on RUclips: Powerful Guard retention techniques.
Tristar Gym Firas is an amazing coach, I wish Tristar was in SoCal, Id definitely go every day. :-/
Perfect vid!
thanks alot man!
Bit late to the party but I still hope you will answer my question.
Is this maintaining-Guard also viable outside of Jiu Jitsu? So street self-defense kinda situations?
Because it seems to me (total noob) that when you grab with an outstretched arm like that, it is really easy to overextend that elbow if he uses both hands, right? Or can you counter quickly enough so that it basically becomes a trap?
I think the technical getup is good, especially if you have more reach than him to keep distance. The other techniques are probably too fancy.
Hi coach! This video has been gold for me.... please could you film a second part in the gi showing how you go from the base position into your butterfly sweeps and submissions as it's the transitions into offence where I seem to run into problems when I get passed! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
i love the details and explaining. Bravo sir!
Great video. I'd like to request more open guard retention. Countering the knee slice / knee cut pass when you're flat on your back would be good.
cl0ckch0ke stay tuned
Firas, I miss you. I miss the team. Marcus, Thiery, Ricci, and Aiman. Love seeing you on here.
where was this video 4 years ago :P excellent excellent stuff.. not just for white belts. please do more basic chaining drill videos please :)
let me rephrase... please do more, chaining drills explained. really helps me learn.
Amazing, exactly what I needed! You are the man, thanks :)
Awesome, thank you very much for posting it!
Thanks Professor. All of your videos are gold. Having you freeze the video, ink edit and voice over gives the viewer the perfect opportunity to study and learn from the positions. Please keep it up! Quick question: other attacks from the stiff arm position? Where to go from here? Thanks!
Well done. Very informative.
Thank you for posting, God bless you brother.
What a great video! Really like the style with lots of details, thanks!
amazing instruction, great technique as always. thank you firas
your videos are the best, so practical
Coach, my only regret is not seeing this earlier!
great shout out to hall...his dvd series is awesome
Very Good explanation. thanks.
greetings from Spain
Firas this tutorial was awesome i hope you make more GI tutorial .
This is a great instructional!
Great explanation! Thank you very much
You still gpt the time to upload a video and answer questions, even though rorys big fight is so close? Man you are a beast :)
Great! So many possibilities!
This is great stuff! Very informative!
Good work, Ariel
So much learning. Thank you
Thanks coach, I have many things to know ...you are the best :)
awesome great details in all videos. Thanks Don't Stop :)
Thank you for posting!
Really helpful stuff, thank you!
Great info coach!
Great stuff, bow!
Wow! Great video!
Very good video. I feel like the loop choke option would add to it though.
i love it that the narrator takes the time to do the audio pause and description. way ahead of thr other tuturoal vids
Great Breakdown!
Thank you, please keep it up, very helpful!
Fantastic concept. Worked the first time I tried it. I need to work on inverting though. How flexible do I need to be to sustain that upside down position? I find it very uncomfortable.
Shyam Tanna no need for a lot of flexibility, its more of mobility and coordination issue. Keep doing the rolling drill I show in this video and it will come.
Thank you Sir.
perfect explanations, thank you!
Thanks Firas!
Love the mark-up explanation! The main trouble for me is that my opponent always pushes my hand away so I can't get a solid collar grab :(
Fantastic video.
Great video, Firas! Could you please do a follow up video on guard retention for no-gi/MMA? I'm guessing an S-hook (aka collar tie) to inverted guard (á la Ryan Hall)? Oss!
Good stuff firas. When you go for the collar drag, could he potentially use his arm to stiff arm you to stop it though? Thanks, keep it up!
brian D If he tries that arm drag him ; )
makes sense aha, thanks!
Great techniques! Thx for this :)
Great video thank you allot.. !
imo...rather than jumping both legs back, my preference is to do a technical standup motion and my top/front knee will break the grip on the other leg.
Thanks again firas
Thanks from France !
Thank you, thank you Firas. I've been passed and smashed for years with the Toreando. Never found a good defense for it.
Can you still invert when your opponent is on the side of the hips or do you have to invert before he move to your side? Is there a certain angle do you have to invert away from ?
Wee Mien Cheung work this well and that should help solve your problem.
I'm a big fan. I was practicing this and opponent jump in to flying arm bar. Again I was just practicing and have not drilled move enough times.
when you do the inverted guard, are you suppose to put the hand under your leg or behind the back when you're about to roll over? In the solo drill, it goes under the leg. In the demonstration with the partner, it goes behind the back. Is there a difference?
Both are ok.
Thanks professor.
