    For those unfamiliar with the scene, NES Tetris is a 33 year old game that has sparked competition ever since the 1990 Nintendo World Championships. The scene was revived in 2010 with the advent of the Classic Tetris World Championship, and since then the talent pool has continued to grow year after year. Joseph Saelee brought hypertapping to the forefront of the scene with his win in 2018, and ever since other players have been innovating. Cheez created rolling as a way to move pieces as fast as possible back in 2020, and the scene hasn't been the same since.

    I previously had mentioned stacking shape in 29+, saying that I believed that a bowl shape (high on sides, low in middle) is likely optimal at these speeds. But I was second guessing this, seeing as how many recent records featured stacking in the more traditional style (right well). But now I noticed that Eric's stacking in this particular game is more like what I had been conjecturing as the most robust style. Note how often he immediately places pieces vertically into columns 1 and 10. It will be very interesting to compare the 29+ stacking styles of those able to achieve these long games as we move forward!

    • @codetaku
      @codetaku 2 года назад +3

      The issue with center wells is that if you're going for tetrises they're inherently mathematically inconsistent because of how the tetrominos fit together
      But if you're fine grinding out a multi-hour game to get as many points as possible then yeah you're right, a center well is pretty nice.

    • @MrBrain4
      @MrBrain4 2 года назад +1

      @@codetaku Of course. As the game progresses from 18, to 19, to 29, the focus becomes more survival, and trying to get Tetrises when possible. At the level of top players, center well is not optimal for anything before level 29.

      @@Bollibompa No. I had frequently been mentioning it, especially in Fractal's streams where he was trying for "colors" in PAL Tetris. I had noticed early on in his attempts, he was getting further more consistently when stacking with more of a bowl shape, rather than flat, or right well. I also noticed that when he started going away from that bowl style of stacking, that his center would then quickly get too high, and cause stacking difficulties.

    • @MrBrain4
      @MrBrain4 2 года назад +2

      @@Bollibompa But also, yes, I did mention it in a RUclips comment as well. But it wasn't a random comment. Rather it related directly to the style of stacking seen in the particular RUclips video where a player had gotten to a high line count using more of a bowl-shaped stacking approach.

    Cameras meant for photography have a built in time to end video recording after a certain point even though it can record longer. it's ruining competitive tetris for me. it's coming to a point where who plays more efficiently no longer matters between the top players and most games will come down to who lasts longer in the kill screen. it was exciting at first but it's becoming old quickly, and i miss those days when efficiency was the most important factor. eventually they're going to have to have a line cap in tournaments or something so every match isn't too absurdly long, i think they're better off doing it sooner before it gets more out of hand than it already has.

      I would say that glitched colors might pose a risk for being a true game ender. I'm currently writing a script for a video on the first player to reach the bugged colors (Starting at level 138) in the PAL version of NES Tetris, and there appears to be a few of those bugged color schemes that are either super dark colors, or just one solid color altogether. The technique is called rolling, that is how tetris players call it. Since it is impossible to tap the button that fast with only a finger, he keeps one finger on the button and then taps the controller on the underside in quick succession with the fingers from the other hand. That way the controller moves against the finger on the button and the button is pressed far quicker than you could press it using only one finger. Average person can tap 2-3 times a second with one finger, but tap using all your fingers in a sweeping motion and you get 9-10 taps a second, or something like that.

      Rolling is a technique that's been recently introduced to allow for piece movement speeds of ~20-30hz (the previous technique of hypertapping would only reach top speeds of 15-20hz). aGameScout has a great video detailing it here: ruclips.net/video/LMQHUL203rs/видео.html

    I think they should cap the length of the game, not the levels. The average tetris game with a level 18 start lasts around 8 minutes to kill screen. Cap the game for tournament play at around 8 minutes and then people still have an incentive to play clean but at higher speeds.

      I've proposed the idea of doing a sort of timer-based chasedown. So, when one of the two players tops out and their game ends, a timer starts, and the other player might only have 2 minutes to chase down the other score, where if time runs out before they do so, their opponent wins. The issue is that it's hard to implement in matches, especially when both players have stream delays for their game feed. Could be possible for in person tournaments though, but the scene as a whole is still discussing potential options.

      @@okCobalt What are our first principles? What makes Tetris, Tetris? The game is built around the idea of rewarding people who can stack very efficiently, and then challenging them to do it faster and faster until eventually they can't go any faster. We've learned how to break speed barriers by DAS, then hypertapping, and now rolling, but the core has always been: How can we stack to make Tetrises efficiently?
      You want to stack flawlessly to achieve Tetrises with minimal burning and you want to do it at faster and faster speeds. You want the person who wins to be the person who can attack the most efficiently at high speeds.
      The problem is, the pieces drop so fast that even with hypertapping you might squeeze out a few more points, but not much on average. Rolling changed two things dramatically. It enhanced what hypertapping already did, which was to let people play higher and more efficiently, and survive very high digs. But it also let people change their strategy from efficient Tetrising to long term killscreen survival.
      I don't think you want to discourage people from innovating in the speed department, but you shouldn't let that take over the hand and totally alter the core of the game.

      That's exacly the thing that has been done to Classic Score Attack mode in Tetris Effect: Connected. After one player tops out - his enemy has only 2 minutes to chase him

      @@okCobalt Changing the rules of the game because people put effort, experimented, and became "too good" at it sounds extremely discouraging and a terrible idea imo. I don't even think it's anywhere near becoming a problem yet.

      He probably scored some 1.1's and possibly 1.2's well before Harry Hong scored the first official maxout
      But to him the WR wasn't that big a deal.

      I disagree in the sense where he doesn't owe us anything. If he wants to keep WRs to himself, he's more than entitled to it. In the end, it only affects him anyway as it means that he loses out on the bragging right of WRs. Maybe he's at a stage where there are other things that are worth more to him than just uploading WRs.
      Not only that, it's refreshing to have a gamer who is so nonchalant about his own abilities. It's a charm. Like - "I'm damn good at this game and I don't care to brag about it".
