  • Previously I did a video expressing concerns about the direction and longer term viabilty of Home Assistant. Now a year and a half later, not only has Home Assistant significanlty changed, a few major announcements were made at the recent State of the Open Home annual livestream.
    In this video, I'll review some of those major areas of concern and see how Home Assistant has been doing in those areas. This is strictly an opinion piece based on my own personal experiences. Like all things, your experiences may be different.

    Great information and encouraging new. HA has certainly come a very long way and as a new dedicated user, i am happy to hear the future looks bright. With the growing number of excellent content creators like yourself, i am sure HA will continue to move forward. Thanks for the update!

      Thanks! I'm pretty happy.... and a bit relieved... about the future of HA. Every time I invested time in new devices, automations or creation of dashboards, I always wondered if I'd have to start all over with a new system if HA was sold, acquired or took some other sort of commercial turn. But with the info shared, along with the longer term roadmap, I'm no longer fearful that I'll need to move to another system for at least a very long time.
      Thanks for the comment!

    Home Assistant's future is looking fantastic!
    One reason I love Home Assistant so much is the thriving RUclips community. So many talented creators make setting things up smooth sailing.
    So thanks for being part of that awesome group!

      I agree. For me, this was the biggest set of announcements since they introduced Lovelace dashboards! And the community is one of the primary reasons I selected Home Assistant many years ago over other platforms at the time (like Domoticz). Unlike my selections of Betamax and HD-DVD, I luckily got this one right the first time!
      Thanks for watching and the kind words!

    Very informative, thank you. In the past, I have worked with Human Machine Interface development systems that allowed point and click, but generated underlying code (in this case VBA) so you could work on the level of a user-developer and advanced developer if you so choose. To some degree this is available in some HA integrations, but perhaps a stronger effort towards this would make HA fit for home owners as well as those of us who tinker...

      You are welcome! Home Assistant currently does create the YAML when you use the UI for automations and scripts. The issue (at least for me) is that all the automations go into one big file and all the scripts into another. So you really can't segment or organize your YAML when everything is all in one big file. In addition, you cannot really directly edit or add any sort of comments to the generated YAML. If you edit the file, the UI editor may not work and any comments get overwritten the next time you add/edit another automation (or script).
      As someone with literally hundreds and hundreds of automations and scripts, keeping these organized and documented (within the code itself) is key for me. That's why I personally never use the UI editors. If there was a way to organize and document the generated code, then I might consider using the editors. Maybe this will happen some day.
      Thanks for watching and taking a few moments to share a comment!

    Yet another fantastic video my friend! Extremely informative. I saw an article about Home Assistant and Open Home, but had not had the time to read it and did not understand the connection until now. Very, very relieved! Thanks again sir, and keep'um com'n! Oh and I wanted to let you know that I took the lessons I learned from you on the LED controller as well as other things and extended off them to create a smart plantation blind actuator that leverages the D1 mini, it's SPST shield, ESP Home and more. Couldn't find anything on the market so I designed the circuit, designed the body in Tinkercad and printed it on a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon. I have you to thank for kick starting me in the right direction to get this far, so thank you very much again. I just shared this story yesterday with folks from UGA as well and gave them links to several of your videos. Very much looking forward to more of your videos - cheers!

      Thanks! It is much appreciated and I'm glad I could help out just a bit in your own DIY journey. Sometimes building your own is the only way to get exactly what you want. In fact, my next video will be a DIY version of something that you could easily buy, but personally I enjoy going the DIY route... I get something that exactly meets my needs, I usually learn a thing or two along the way and I get the satisfaction of building it myself.
      Thanks for the comment... I do appreciate it! And..... no, trust me, you wouldn't want to see my happy dance... that isn't meant for anyone's eyes!

    It was a superb livestream and update on the State of the Open Home. You should watch it. Well produced, lots on news announcement, roadmap directions and long-term sustainability commitment. All done by the actual developers of Home Assistant and not some marketing team. Great news and thanks for the update.

    • @ResinChemTech
      @ResinChemTech  Месяц назад

      Agreed. I watched the entire stream when it was being broadcast live... obviously since they used the question I posed regarding YAML... I was a bit surprised that they used it. But I was completely blindsided by the foundation announcement... and I pretty much did my own dance similar to what I show in the video!
      And as you mentioned, there was a lot of other good info in the presentation, including talking about the states of Zigbee, Z-Wave and Matter. But obviously I was focusing on updates from my original video so I selected to only include those segments that related to the original concerns. But the entire livestream is worth a watch.

    Hi, is MINIX Z100-0dB suitable for running Home Assistant on Proxmox, Linux?

      I cover both the required and recommended hardware specs in my video on moving Home Assistant to Proxmox: ruclips.net/video/w6uCJlhXf60/видео.html You might check out that video to see how the specs of the machine you list compare and whether it would work with Proxmox.

      Ha! A wig and maybe a gavel would have been great... wish I would have thought about it. But yes, I think knowing the roadmap/direction and the fact that Home Assistant can't be sold makes me much more confident that I can continue to invest in Home Assistant for at least the foreseeable future.
      Thanks for watching... and thanks for the comment. It did make me laugh!

    The commercialized aspect has been resolved, was always one of my main concerns. How many times have we seen this happen to open source developments.

    • @ResinChemTech
      @ResinChemTech  Месяц назад +2

      Agreed! While I sometimes grumble and don't always fully agree with some of the development decisions, my biggest concern by far was that Home Assistant would be sold or commercialized. I really did do a little "happy dance" when the announcement about the foundation was made. But I didn't film it for the video.... nobody wants to see that!
      Thanks for watching and the comment.

      Thanks. I was a bit surprised that they did pick my question... if you were watching the comments, there were a lot of them. And as I mentioned, this question has been asked repeatedly for years.... so I was shocked that it was brought up. But I'm glad it was.. and was pretty happy (for the most part) with the answer from Franck.
      Thanks for watching... and for the comment.
