Thank you for putting out this huge list! It was a lot of fun to go through the whole series, your banter and interactions are truly what kept me coming back. It made me do my own list and realize I need to get some of my favourites out to play again. Now I feel I need to dust off Forbidden stars and give it another go. Oh and Devon you really need to check out Level Up Advanced 5th edition for D&D, it completely revamped the game I already loved. Thanks again!

After finishing this series this year, I'd be curious in hearing a discussion (if there's an interesting one to be had) about the games that are on the top 50 of BGGs popularity list, but not on any one of your top 100 lists. I'm going based off memory (so I might include games that were on lists), but games like Gaia Project / Terra Mystic, Eclipse 2nd Dawn, Twilight Struggle, Great Western Trail, Puerto Rico, Pax Pamir, Wingspan, Orleans, Barrage, Agricola, Underwater Cities, Maracaibo, On Mars.

A lot of those I haven’t played so it’s not necessarily preference (though it still might be once played) but more lack of opportunity to play them 🙂

Sanity & Mythos made the Call of Cthulhu RPG, much the same with Elric/Stormbringer having order/chaos mechanism, same with WHFRP (1s ed), Kult, Vampire, Unknown Armies, Alien.. and other titles. Having a metaphysic and psychological system mechanism tied into the paradigm of the setting and its theme really accentuates the system mechanical roleplaying game experience (any other rpg mechanisms comes across as pointless in comparison). Mechanisms like these are so inspirational for ones roleplaying.

Awesome lists everyone! Really no content creator fits my gaming tastes perfectly and Alex has been close often - but I don't get to play much area control due to my gaming groups so obviously this list felt a lot less that way. Glad to still see TfM and CDMD. Also, Devon wins for me with putting Dune Imperium about where I place it. Arnak so far is a fantastic solo game to me and I'd probably have sold it if not for that - so I'm very excited for the expansion. Also, Dwellings is really fantastic.

Cool that you got into Gloomhaven, Alex! I remember you wanted to get rid of it in the past years. ^^ glad u had fun with it.
I haven't played it since I concluded it back in 2020-2021 NYE.
This year I finished Oathsworn and I was debating which one I like best. I'm inclined to think Oathsworn, bc I'm way into narrative and theme. While the cooldown mechanics are awesome too.
For 2023, another humongous game might dethrone them all, Aeon's Trespass: Odyssey. It is very early to say, but it has A LOT going on for it, the narrative is great so far, the encounters, the secrecy, the challenge, the exploration. It is ticking many many boxes. The only negative atm is that I prefer card to dice, but so far it isn't bothering me nearly as much as I thought it could. It's actually exciting to crit and be rewarded xD plus there's lots of mitigation.

Gloomhaven with great mechanics can be so much better if it was 1/3 the length.
I much prefer each scenario bring a new mechanic and meaningful reward. The mentality to plan and set aside 2 hours and possibly get a team together and go through the setup just to have a repetitive mission is quite a mood killer.
There should be zero grind for boardgames.
I keep comparing this to video games which is “fine” to have some grind since sometimes you get home from a long day and just want some mindless gaming. You just turn on the console and mash the buttons.

207hrs into Gloomhaven as BG stats tells me.. :-O (played through the base game and halfway through Forgotten Circles) by far my most played game of all.. it's got to be my number one right now, probably will be dethroned by Frosthaven soon.. ^^ almost played another 45 hours of jaws of the lion.. ^^ (a lot of GH plays were on TTS, though, as covid did quite interrupt our live meetings..)

1:02:06 Dune: Imperium was the game which, for me, produced my worst gaming experience of my life… However, I know that it had nothing to do with the game itself - and everything to do with the people who I was playing it with, some of who are very cutthroat players. Also, the game took longer - because we were playing with the new expansion (at the time) Rise of Ix - for the first time - and one player was over-analyzing all the possible (new) decisions.
Many people would have stopped playing Dune: Imperium after that occurrence. I am happy to say that I am not one of them, because I can disassociate that gaming experience from the game itself.

I really struggle to understand how Cthulhu DMD is consistently challenging for you Alex. I’ve played it two times and it never was a question whether we win or not - we were not even under threat of losing anytime during these plays 😢 I’ve double checked the rules and asked some people and we did everything right. It hurts me because I adore the madness track in this game and it is almost the only concern I have that ruins the game for me. The other one from the last play was a strange scenario design in which we had a quiet big monster in an area of the map that we could ignore for the entire game and literally didn’t affect our experience at all.

Woooo! What a ride fwends. The final stats tracking my games I played (P), games I own (O), and games I want to play (W) compared to the games mentioned by the hosts. Overall connections had Devon and Prof. Meg tied for the lead at 29, Alex just behind at 24. For the illustrious top 10 segment, Devon comes out on top with 4 connections, Prof. Meg and Alex both with 3. For the categories Prof. Meg takes (W)7, Devon lands (O)8, and Devon and Alex share (P)20. Totals break down as such:
    Devon (P)20, (O)8, (W)5 = 33
    Prof. Meg (P)19, (O)6, (W)7 = 32
    Alex (P)20, (O)3, (W)4 = 27
So we will meet at Devon's place, Prof. Meg will bring the (W), followed by a Devon (O), and lastly finish with an Alex (P).
    Other interesting bits:
    Devon: Top section 100-91, 60-51 (5) each; Lowest 80-71 (1); Of note 90-81, 40-31, 10-1 (4) each; Visually like a sound wave (?).
Prof. Meg: Top section 90-81 (5); Lowest 80-71, 70-61, 60-51 (2) each; Of note 50-41, 30-21, 20-11 (4) each; Visually a high early peak, low valley, middle plateau.
    Alex: Top section 30-21 (5); Lowest 90-81 (1); Of note 40-31 and 20-11 (4) each, 50-41 and 10-1 (3) each creating a typical upward bell curve from 50-1.
Of my top 10, Devon has 4 (Catan, TM, Everdell, Santorini), Prof. Meg and Alex 2 (Everdell, TM).
On my list of games to play with you if we ever meet will be:
Devon: Catan Cities & Knights, Santorini (w/god powers), Star Wars Rebellion
Prof. Meg: Betrayal at House On The Hill, Merchants of The Dark Road, Stardew Valley
Alex: Castles of Burgundy, Everdell, TM
Thanks for the list. What a fun ride. Can't wait to see what's next....AFTER THIS! HaHa Bye!

@@BoardGameCo Yeah, Devon landed a sleeper with D&D, I don't play hardly ever, I have played a couple one shots so technically I've played. Plus having SW Rebellion, Dwellings as unique to his list helped. Come to think of it I should have totaled games unique to each list and see where the gains actually came from. TM and Everdell are a wash if everyone has them. I'll look into it.

    • @robertcrist6059
      @robertcrist6059 Год назад

In a shocking twist, Prof. Meg had the most unique games on her list with 17, Devon 16, Alex, 15.
In another bit of interesting analysis I looked at this unique games and marked them green to say "I'll always play it", and red to say "I don't ever want to play this again/I don't need to play this again", blue to say "they're from the I want to play category and won't know till then", and white to say "I'll play it if its what gets tabled". Of these Alex, 2 green, 4 red, 6 blue, 4 white; Devon 5 green, 7 red, 3 blue, 1 white; Prof. Meg 2 green, 8 red, 4 blue, 3 white. So this to me says, take those games out and Alex clearly wins by having more quality picks. But these were just the unique to you games. Inis for example, Alex and Prof. Meg, never want to play that again; Viticulture, same. So numbers could keep dropping. There you go, maybe a more quality controlled list, not many misses. Devon has some of my all time favorites. Meg has more wider range of connections, but could be one and dones easily.

And to be honest Alex you talked up Tak, an abstract I haven't seen before. I dig abstracts, Santorini being one. Curious if you have played any of the GIPF series? I own 5 of the series and they rock. If you haven't played, maybe they go on my short list to play with you sometime. That will score you points for 2023 haha

If I may critisize the production of your video a bit, It really lacks some image of the game you are talking about but most importantly, write the name of the game ! I'm not the best in English and even if I understand like 90% of everything you say, for the Alex 7th ... took me like 20 minute on google to find Crokinole ... even google subtitle told me coconuts ... crocodile ... man that's super super painful and hardd to follow you.

24:15 Well, I am a Euro person and I really enjoy it. That’s one game in which I don’t really mind the dice combat - because it is quick, simple and fun - and also because most of the factions incentivize you to go into battle, by rewarding you with some benefit for losing your battle. Therefore, you either win your battle and get to go up the glory track and gain 3 victory points, etc… Or you lose your battle but you get your unit back into your ready area immediately instead of having that unit have to stay in the Underworld, etc.

I think when you make a list of the top 10 board games, you first need to set out and define what a board game is, set parameters and then there is a logic there. Not to be pedantic, but D&D is a game. D&D is a roll playing game, but D&D is not a board game. It is typically a pen and paper, dice rolling roll playing game. I am happy Devon was being himself here, but I respectfully disagree the inclusion of D&D on this list. To, me, there really isn't any fight to be had here.

    • @npckse8508
      @npckse8508 Год назад

Why I think they should just say the top ten games list. If you see no difference between D&D or TTRPGs, well I am not here to convince you otherwise. Same goes with discussions about whether PC or digital app versions of board games should be logged and counted as playing the board game.

Not to be pedantic, but the title of the video does say "Top 100 Games of All Time", and each one has done since the very first video. Also, "role playing game" not "roll playing game".
Hence, yes, I agree, there's really isn't any fight to be had here.
