- Learn how to make your own double extract medicinal mushroom tincture using a few bits of simple equipment at home.
We show you step-by-step how to make a dual extraction tincture using water and alcohol. The medicinal mushrooms used in this video include:
- Reishi
- Maitake
- Turkey Tail
- Shiitake
- Cordyceps
First we soak the mushrooms in alcohol for 3 weeks, then we boil them in a hot water decoction. Finally, we combine the two extracts together to make a dual extraction for a full range of health benefits.

Thanks.i have 20 lbs of dried wild reishi from pacific NW. They grow amongst the huckleberries in August. A few different varieties grow out here.also I find agaricon rarely.

When I double extract with turkey tail, the water part curdles in the alcohol. Any tips on how mix them?

I have one question: I read somewhere that doing a triple extraction is the optimal way to go: according to this article, some compounds need to be extracted on cold water, some hot water and of course, some on alcohol. Medicinal mushrooms are rarely gourmet except Shiitake or Maitake and some others. So the main thing is getting the most benefit from the ingredience by extracting.

Not sure if its coincidence, or if it's even possible, but I've been drinking chaga tea 2 times a day for about 1 month now,and it seems like I'm tolerating gluten better.i dont have celiac, just intolerance, but now ican have some bread ,amd dont feel bloated or really gassy! Mushrooms are amazing

After you pulverized the dehydrated mushrooms in the blender or coffee grinder, can I make capsules from that powder or does the powder/mushroom needs to be cooked first?... how do I make the capsules?

I wonder if one could potentially save some compounds by letting the mixture sit and evaporate rather than boil it down. (although that would take a long time)

It definitely won't harm them, and would ensure you've got out all of the bioactive compounds - if you have the time then yes, we would recommend that!

Presentation. I was so blessed to find a giant reishi growing this fall, and I’ve had some of it soaking in 80 proof for two months now.
I’m hesitant to use the alcohol soaked reishi for my water extraction, because I heard that the alcohol may break down the very components that are to be extracted by the water.
What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Joshua, as far as I understand it (I'm not a herbalist so perhaps worth checking with one as well), most of the water soluable compounds will be remain intact and can still be extracted after soaking in alcohol.

Is 2 hours the correct time to leaving them simmering? & also is is OK to simmer them in a Stainless steel pan or best to not use metal at all & stick to Pyrex?? Many Thanks Héloïse

Does the order matter? Can you or have you tried doing it together? Why not boil the alcohol off? Using a coffee filter with a vacuum pump would filter it better?
