    Top notch. That parallel trick is genius. Thats why I like learning from experience.

    This is about the coolest thing I have ever seen on you tube. @Suburban Tool Inc , is there a video showing the radial tangent angle wheel dresser being taken apart like the Master "spindexer" thing? That tangent movement is really surprising smooth and seems so frictionless.

    Hello Don, Thank you for the videos! Do you have any recommendations/suggestions regarding surface grinders and brands. Two options are: DOALL 8" X 24" POWER FEED SURFACE GRINDER versus, BROWN & SHARPE 618 MICROMASTER HYDRAULIC SURFACE GRINDER? They are both used, and I am looking to purchase one for a garage shop. Thank you again.

    How do you ensure the distance between your two 45 degree bevels on the wheel? just touch on the side of the wheel, zero out, knock off to the bottom of the first bevel and subtract from the total wheel thickness?

  • @Tome4kkkk
    @Tome4kkkk 7 лет назад

    What's the frit of the wheel and what surface roughness it produces in Ra, roughly? (total noob to machining)

    when you move the body up at 7:15 doesn't that change the radius?

  • @daveat191
    @daveat191 7 лет назад +2

    Love your videos. Just to clarify.... you have a radius and (2) 45 degree angles-- fine. You do not have the angles tangent to the radius-- just to be clear. The wheel would not be wide enough anyway. That dresser should be able to do that but with a smaller radius. Angle, stop, radius, stop, angle.

    Hi Don,
    When grinding to a width on a feature with multiple faces how do you measure between them for the next plunge, like in the sine plate? How do you confirm the v-grooves are exactly 5 inches apart before you cut?
    Thanks,
    Mike

      We
      have a Digital Readout on the grinder, so after we do slot one we simply move
      over the 5.0000” and then cut slot 2.

      I would take a few passes maybe a thousandth or two (total depth) and check on a comparator from intersect to intersect.

    How did you center up the radius dresser on the wheel? Or did it not matter as much (just had to be close) since you adjusted the cross when you started the grind of the sine plate?

    • @SuburbanToolInc
      @SuburbanToolInc  8 лет назад +1

      +ILGopher You're correct. You just need to be close, I eyeballed it.

    I like this video but I still not getting how you pencil the radius I saw you give your starting dimension 3.400 them you loss your head and raise it up my question is how you get the dimension 1.000 radius since you move the head up later (Rafael Portland oregon)

      Andre Gross I will see what we can do. The factory is extremely busy and we have to make sure there are no disruptions. I send out pictures of parts in process on our Twitter feed all the time.

      Even if your employees are busy on the machines it's still would be great to have a look around.
      Great videos by the way, nobody else doing free grinding videos.
      Thanks!

      Andre Gross Thanks AndreWe will try.The factory is very loud and fork trucks are running everywhere. It is more of a logistical problem. We will give this some thought.

    After the radius dress was set by the height gage. It was move up just before setting it on the surface grinder. Did it change the radius?

    • @SuburbanToolInc
      @SuburbanToolInc  9 лет назад

      Farmer Frank No , it was moved from a flat surface plate to a flat magnetic chuck.

      I am curious about one thing, he spent the first half of the video setting up the diamond height then right before he moved it from the surface plate to the grinder he loosened up a setscrew or something that controls the height of the diamond. I assumed he was moving it to get clearance but, by raising the diamond from a known height to a unknown point for clearance wouldn't this change your radius from 1 inch to something new.? The higher you move up the smaller the swing or radius you will form perhaps?

    • @geraldgepes
      @geraldgepes 8 лет назад

      +Matt W.
      I think (not sure)that the tangent motion is adjusted in order to achieve the proper radius and the height is subjective to the set up. i.e. you can form a .4 inch radius by adjusting the tangent .2 inches in either direction.

    Can this tool be used to re-profile a 1.3 mm radius?

  • @Wehrmeyer1

    Here you ground 2 45 deg angles and a bottom surface all with the same setup.If you were grinding 2 90 deg angles and a bottom surface you would have side wheel ground that. So my question is "as long the radial surface is doing the grinding you are basically correct"? No grinding with the side of the wheel.

  • @imaadsaad9158
    @imaadsaad9158 7 лет назад

    why dont you use coolant while grinding the plate...i am sure there will be variation of around 10 to 20 microns as it is a plunging operation,as full wheel is plunged it easily gets heated resulting in dimensional variation.

    Don,
    Great videos! wouldn't miss them for the world.
    That said (and no, I am not a safety nazi!) we instil in the 'younglings' that they should NOT go near machinery with jewellery or wristwatches ...
    And yes, after all this time YOU know what you are doing. But every sixteen year old, taking shop classes, believes he knows better than you...until they deserve the nickname 'Stubby'...
    Cheers & thanks

    Great videos... very informative..
    .This is no criticism..but an optidress is a lot quicker, plus you have the ability to dress a rad tangential to an angle...I could dress the wheel with an optidress then grind the form before you have even started to dress your wheel...

  • @davidharte4703
    @davidharte4703 2 года назад

    An optidress attachment that fits to Jones and Shipman surface grinders is way quicker than this dresser....you can redress without having to disturb what your grinding....Also having a plunger type clock mounted with a magnet (with small plate fitted to it)..so you can zero where you are regarding depth....the hydraulic auto traverse is way too slow on your machine as well...
    Interesting to learn how you tackle different machining techniques though ..I'm from UK and use metric and imperial measurements....Tend to prefer metric as you have less digits to use....eg....0.002mm as opposed to 0.00007"..

      Yeah, it was like a bomb going off. Plus it was in a big cast iron grindzone that made it reverberate a good bit.

    this might sound like a stupid question but
    why not just mill out the slot in the piece instead of grinding it

    • @SuburbanToolInc
      @SuburbanToolInc  9 лет назад +1

      PLATINUMPOLAK Machining is the 1st step. If it needs to be a tighter tolerance than machining will allow then grinding is the next step. Then comes lapping.
