I was drifting across the stars, lost in the deep space with no ship and nearly no oxygen left when I decided to listen one last time to that song. In a moment all the planets aligned. And there I was... Lost in the darkness of the space, with just asong to accompany me in my last moments. And I can tell you it was a magnificent last moment. The raw, terrifying panic I felt when I realized that my jetpack was practically useless was something only few games have made me feel.
The acceptance that, at least on that timeline, I would die alone, drifting through an empty space.
And then the almost comical relief that you feel the most united with all of these characters at once, when you are so, so far away.
It was way less terrifying than watching your oxygen bar slowly deplete would have been.
Holy hell what a wonderful game this is.

      @71tofu 3 года назад +35

I actually had a problem with the flute in that with my speakers there were times where it was literally too low a frequency for them to put out. I suspect that listening to the flute track with a woofer or speaker set designed to handle much lower frequencies might help flesh it out. I know it was too low because there was a point where it was flakey, cutting in and out with the natural resonance of the instrument. My regular headset seems to pick up more of the flute during the quiet lows where as, for example, I plugged in a set of ear buds that I know have about half the range my laptop speakers have (Cheap ear buds made in China, good laptop speakers made in Japan.) and the only time you could hear the flute was during its loudest and at the high points. This is absolutely a song that, to really appreciate it, needs to be approached with the mentality of a hobbyist audiophile. Otherwise the flute can, and absolutely will get lost in anything else. It's not a bad thing, as the depth of the flute in contrast with everything else brings a wholesome body to the music that can't be replicated by any of the other instruments besides the piano, and the piano is otherwise already occupied with the accompaniment to the present melody.
At least, I think that's the correct musical term. It has been a long while since I've been in a music class.
In the end though, I can't stress just how well put together the song is. I genuinely wound up sitting here the entire duration of the music, despite it essentially being the same simple melody with its accompaniments.

I love what they did with the piano. Solanum doesn’t always show up at the campfire. If they don’t, the ending isn’t the same, you don’t know everything you would have if they were there. Solanum’s presence signifies a complete shift in tone, it gives the ending a whole different meaning. And the music does the same. Solanum’s piano changes the whole song’s melody. The other instruments are still there, they still sound the same, but the song is different. It’s no longer just a congregation of a few rag-tag astronauts who barely got to see their own universe. It’s the final chorus of the nomai, the hearthians, the sky and stars.

This is why this song speaks to me. We just said good bye to our beloved dog. And this song kept playing in my mind & heart. All these individual pieces come together, beautiful on their own, but the interaction with each other creates something greater than the sum of its parts. The piano feels like the “good bye”. Separate, different, but beautiful, and it adds significance to the “song” by being outside of it but inside of it at the same time. A worth while piece of the composition, though not the main melody, it stands out so much that it brings new meaning and feeling to the main melody.

*spoiler warning*If you put garbo and solanum you can see that they complement each other changing rithms at the same time and with the same melancholic theme. That is curious because they are both very conected with the quantic stuff, you can see that other instumruments dont combine so well that is just what i think might be a way to comunicate that even if they arent related, their experience with the quantum objects has changed their undertandig of the world and allows them to comunicate in way that the others dont. Solanum saw quantic objects from a scientific way and tried to understand it + she went to the quantic moon / garbo understood the quantic objects he learned from them and made poems using quantum entanglement, that could explain a little bit why garbo is a little bit of a support instument, because he didnt know as much but he was on the same path following solanum (if he went to the quantum moon its a possibility that he could get to the north and go meet solanum). In my opinion its just beautifull how a simple 1:30 seconds can say so much about 2 persons by just playing a song.

OHH BOY I was wrong. This game is in a class of it's own. Now I am looking for an Outer Wilds subtitute.

While setting the course to a planet far away, you decided to read some of the ancient writings you have decoded, as you so often do.
Once again, you lost yourself in the old stories of an long gone civilization.
After a while you realize that you are speeding towards a tiny comet.
Filled with panic, you jump into the pilot seat.
    But you are to late.
Filled with panic, you try a crash landing,
    But you are to late.
Like a pinball, your starship ricochets off the comet, away from the starsystem you knew for your entire live.
The thrusters are failing, air is leaking out and blaring alarms warn you of fatal reactor damage.
Filled with panic, you dress into your sporadic space suit.
Filled with panic, you try to access the reactor.
    But you were to late.
The ship explodes, pushing you even faster away.
Filled with Terror, you see that you are traveling into space with dozens of miles per second.
Filled with fear, you realize your pathetic, rusty jetpack doesn't even change the direction you are flying.
    You give up.
You are drifting through an cold, empty and uncaring space.
Your fuel is running out, and so will your air.
After the terror comes the acceptance.
In an last attempt to not completely break down, you pull out your radio tool.
You point it into the general direction of all the planets that seem to be aligned now.
You don't really hear something new.
You know all these instruments already.
You know the people who play them, you have spent many evenings with campfires and marshmallows with them.
But you never heard them all at once. Finally, you start to cry.
Not because of fear, but because never before you felt so United with all these other travels and explorers.
You laugh about the Irony. Moments from death, as alone as one could be, you feel as United as you never have before.
For a while, you are happy.

it makes me so goddamn glad that the nomai did exist, at all. even if the hearthians could never truly meet them, their presence is appreciated and cherished well after their tragic end in the system.
makes me both glad we could experience them, even in the limited capicity we did, but also sad we missed them. could not live to fully experience what they did.

  • @HeartAce59
    @HeartAce59 3 года назад +74

I finally finished playing this beautiful game, and feel like wanting to spend my two cents on what the instruments mean according to what I've experienced about the characters.
    Spoilers below!
    .
    .
    .
    .
Banjo: the first instrument you hear, and the one that plays the most in outer space. It represents the whole game, a game full of excitement yet fear of the unknown, a dualism that kept Riebeck stuck in place, but pushed us to go forward. I feel you, Riebeck. I too would always tiptoe my way through the Hanging City.
Drums: Oh, Chert. You workaholic, you. His tapes are everywhere in the system. Would make sense his instrument is loud and clear, and the he really goes hard with the melody. He always does his studying, and he signs it too!
Harmonica: in media we usually associate it with jail prisoners. That's what Feldspar currently is. Ventured too deep in the most hostile of places, he crashed and now he's stranded there. But he seems happy about it. He always loved danger, didn't he?
Flute: at first it baffled me. Gabbro plays as much as five notes. Is he even trying? Then I talked to him and it hit me. He stopped trying. He's died enough times to give up. Now he just chills watching the whirlpools. Had I grown frustrated the game hazards, would have I ended just like him? But I can't hate him. How he doesn't even care anymore is endearing in a way.
Whistling. A simple melody. I visited the Attlerock first, and soon after I would have ended my first cycle. Esker is the closest to the home planet, but why does he feel like the loneliest? How many times has he waved at me, while I was going somewhere else, and I never cared to look and wave back?
Piano: the most advanced instrument, and the one associated with the Nomai. You can't hear it unless you met Solanum first. Piano in the right place always moves me to tears, and again, it did. We don't even know if Solanum is alive anymore, but they're part of the crew now because WE made them part of the crew. The piano melody is the one that makes the tune both a happy and melancholic one. It makes it become an elegy to the universe, and a welcome hymn to the new one. Even if we don't meet Solanum, we couldn't have made it without the Nomai. That's why the piano completes it all. And it gives it a new meaning.
    .
    .
    .
    .
Wow, this was a long one to write. Probably took a whole cycle. Thank you to all who arrived here and took the time to read this through the end, and thank you Mobius Digital and the composer Andrew Prahlow to have created one of the most memorable experiences in gaming ever.

I'd like to give you a new lens in which to view Gabbro. I think he might be my favorite character.
He says, around the campfire: "It makes you glad you stopped and smelled the pine trees along the way."
Gabbro DOES care. That's why he's not rushing anything. He's letting the universe be itself - Not trying to shape it, just observe it, respect it. Enjoy it.
We have a destination in mind... Gabbro has a journey in mind. He's not lazy. He's content. Relaxed. Out of all the travellers, Chert is harried, Riebeck is terrified, Feldspar is relieved, Esker is lonely, [redacted] is trapped, and Gabbro...
Well, yeah, he's got his head in the clouds. But I'm willing to bet that if he sat there long enough, he'd end up doing exactly what we did - He'd just take his time doing it, and appreciate the little things.
Like naps. I didn't say he didn't like naps.
Gabbro's tune is like him. He's not trying to crowd anyone out - He knows what the song needs, and everyone else is doing their part. His touch is subtle. You can't pick out most of the notes he plays - But he DOES fill out the song, in a few key moments. You almost don't notice he's there, but he's not in it for the glory, he's just in it to be there.

For the record 22:15 with only the whistling and harmonica is my personal favourite. Such an intimate and homely moment, like the pause at the end of a long journey. Setting down your backpack and just reflecting on everything that happened.

I love how you payed attention to the audio in the all instruments version of the song. Because it's not in the OST version of Travelers, a lot of people don't notice and simply don't know that there's a sort of "reprise" and a proper ending to the song instead of it just echoing back to just the banjo (the most noticeable indicator being the way the whistling is different throughout the whole thing and ends on one last note). Actually, now that I think about it, it makes a lot of sense that when listening to the soundtrack normally it just loops forever, where actually beating the game has the loop stop.

@@YodragonWasTaken After typing this out, I've come to appreciate the parallel between the literal gameplay loop and the OSTs looping song both stopping with the final loop, but having a version of the song with a proper ending is still very nice to hear for someone like me who listens to Travelers at least once a day.

This, this is what society can produce, an art not just in graphical design but it the storyline and music, that death is inevitable, but that it’s okay, it’s calming to the human brain but a reminder of a masterpiece and all the memories, while it’s just a game, it’s an inspiring and hopeful masterpiece that will make any man cry and appreciate life because in the end when everything and everyone dies, it starts over, this concept and this game shows us what mankind is capable of making and shows what a true memory is and this is why it’s a masterpiece, not just in the graphics or music but the experience and what you learn along the way, this game, this is the best thing humanity has produced and is a true masterpiece compared to anything, because it gives you this feeling, possibly sadness but also hope and that everything will work out in the end, it gives you a sense of security and of a game can do that this is the best god dam game ever to be created, the world is full of wonders and tragedy, but this game shows how beautiful life is and to appreciate every small detail, as I’m writing this I’m am crying, I’m sad but also happy that this game has put a new perspective and every time I hear this song, even when I’m 80 years old, I will still cry tears of sorrow and joy, and hope to look back on life and not to be afraid of death but look at it as if it’s a new beginning, one where everyone I have every loves is… This game is emotional and inspiring, and to anyone who plays it, some advice, it’s okay, everything will be fine, their not gone if they are still remembered, and don’t fear death, it will come sooner or later, but it’s just a whole new world, whether god is real or we recarnate or what ever you think, there is something beyond death, life…
