The fact that, if you sit on the title screen long enough, (22 minutes to be exact.) the stars slowly die out and the pieces of Wilds drift apart and become more and more broken is a sign that nothing was spared creatively with this game. Everything by design. Everything accounted for.

I never thought I would be that guy, but here we are. My brother-in-law had been bugging me to play this game for months, but I never really gave it a shot because the flight controls were a bit difficult to master. Jump back to October 2022. My wife and I had just had a miscarriage. We have two amazing boys, and didn't even know she was pregnant until she started bleeding...After an emergency surgery, we went home the next day and began to grieve the child we would never know. As a way to escape and cope, I picked up this game. I still don't know if that was a good idea or a bad one to be honest, but it was an amazing experience to play through this game with my wife watching, cheering me on, and screaming when an anglerfish popped up out of nowhere. Every night after we put our boys to sleep and our daily distractions were gone, we would pull this game up as a way to distract from our grief. It's been about a month and a half now, and we're getting better, but this game had a profound impact on me partially because, yes, it is an amazing game, but also because of the context of our playing it. I don't know why I keep coming back to this soundtrack. It makes me feel lots of things, but mostly it makes me sad...in a good way I guess. I know this is super long, and I don't expect anybody to really read this, but I wanted to get it out of my head at the very least. If you've read this far...thanks.

(Spoilers for the Game) You know a moment for me that really just sticks out every time I look back on this game. The Sun Station. I had been trying to for multiple time loops to get on that thing. I had firmly believed even before reading logs on the Ember Twin project, that the Sun Station would be the cause of this. Thus I tired everything to get there. Tried flying my ship on it multiple times. Failed every time. Once I had figured out the secret of the Ember Twins and finally made it to the sun station, doing the jump for your life, and making it there, finally ready to shut it down and save everyone. I found the truth. I was hit like a brick. As I read the writing and learned it had failed I didn't know what to do. After everything it turned out that this was simply the fate we were dealt with? I couldn't even leave the station. I went and stared out the window for the rest of that loop. Sitting next to a skeleton and letting the music play. Till it all reset once again. It was beautiful, for me to be lead to believe that there was this hope, this chance I could stop it and realizing, no. There wasn't a thing I could do to stop this. I could only sit and watch. That's when this game truly made it's mark on my heart. To make me feel that failure, yet I wasn't mad. I only wish I could've done something. 40:11

Same here--I thought that there has to be a way to stop everything from happening. Then you read on the vessel that the Nomai found a place to live where the sun isn't dead, and then you think "okay, somehow I'll make it there and bring everyone and it will be okay." it really took me aback when I realized that you can't/aren't supposed to save anyone. the game isn't about survival--it's about death and being okay with it.

The "Final End Times" scene is so special imo because for the first time in the entire story, the game revolves around you. Everything that happened so far has been out of your control, the whole game you have been just an observer, in fact this feeling of powerlessness is a big theme of the game. The Nomai died to something completely arbitrary, something they could've never predicted, let alone prevented, and similarly the player, alongside the whole universe, repeatedly dies because they were simply born at an unfortunate timing.
This powerlessness, being at the mercy of the mood of the cosmos (and finding peace with it), is the main theme of Outer Wilds, but the moment you pick up the warp core from the Ash Twin Project, suddenly you have agency. Suddenly, you have your own fate in your hands, and then the music sets in. The music that accompanied the grandest, most out-of-your-control moment that has ended your life over and over, plays as you try to maneuver your way back to the vessel to change the course of history. It creates this amazing feeling where you feel like you're in *way over your head*. It's such a unique moment.

So many games where key events all happened in the distant past fail to create any sense of urgency or immediacy (think of something like BOTW), but in Outer Wilds the very likable and human characters you read about through your investigations and their hopefulness in the face of repeated tragedy really make you care about them and their mission. Then at the end, things that were remote and ancient become incredibly tense and urgent. The raising of the stakes at the end of this game and the payoff of the story is masterfully done, taking perfect advantage of videogames as a storytelling medium to make YOU feel the knife's edge that the world is balancing on through the experience of play. The music was a huge part of that.

It took me two tries to actually play this game. I just didn't get it the first time I booted it up, and after the first loop I just didn't feel like starting it again. A year later, I was convinced to give it another go, and I'm glad I did. It was a wonderful experience.
At one point, after I had already explored most of the system but hadn't found the final pieces of the story, I flew out to the edge of the system at the end of a loop and lined my signal scope back up at the planets. I got them almost all perfectly aligned... and then listened as, one by one, the signals of the instruments vanished. First Chert's drums. Then Esker's whistle. Then Riebeck's banjo. Then Gabbro's flute. And finally Feldspar's whistle. All that was left was static. And then the loop ended, and I was standing at the campfire again.
    It was profoundly sad.
I had to spend a loop saying goodbye to everyone, before I finished the game.

    Comet Spoilers -
For me, the biggest moment was exploring the comet. I kept wondering, "How did this race of highly intelligent alien life just suddenly die? How did an entire species capable of manipulating a solar system wide contraption all suddenly perish? There's skeletal remains all throughout the planets, so many of them looked completely unaware, like their immediate death was only a unknown second away." And then you reach the center of the comet, through the midst of the invisible poisonous gas (which could be found all throughout the solar system similar to an environmental hazard VIDEOGAMEY thing). You learn this gas was so densely compacted in the comet that their thirst for exploration following a failure of the Sun Station cracked open the shell, and released a wave of instant death which blanketed the entire solar system, sparing only some animal aquatic lifeforms on one of the planets.
There's no spoken dialogue, only written text. The way the music kicked in as I read the final message of the Nomai who realized they were all going to die. The moment it clicked in my brain the cause was the moment the musical crescendo peaked. I was left speechless. What an absolutely amazing game experience that still haunts me to this day.

Whether the Nomai explored the comet or not, it would have ruptured. As per their notes (on the sun station, I think), this was the comet's first foray into the Outer Wilds solar system, and it was that first heat of the sun which caused its core's pressure to spike and rupture. The Nomai's actions weren't their own undoing... Their time had simply come.

I absolutely agree - it was at this moment that I knew that all the calming freedom of knowing that whatever happens it won't have any repercussions in 22 minutes, and suddenly you know this is your only shot. You've gone the whole game since your second loop (assuming you didn't know about it from the 1st loop) effectively consequence free - but now everything hinges on your performance to do what you will. From as many shots as you need to "this is it" is such a huge shift. One hell of a way to crank up the tension for the final loop and just another example of what makes this game so freakin special.

I remember when I did that I was so stressed, especially cause I wasn't going through the anglerfish nestt 100% reliably (I've gone to the vessel like 4 or 5 times before xD) so that moment was tense. And then I was at the vessel, thought "I did it" and get to the command panel. And it's only at this exact moment that I understood how the coordinate worked, and I rushed back to my ship not knowing how much time I had, taking notes of the code on a piece of paper and rushing back to the control panel.
Then when the ship warped I got to the eye of the universe and that was amazing!
I started exploring, taking my time, sending my scout through the black hole first, making sure it was safe, then going through it myself. Took a while to understand the layout and got worried about oxygen.
And then suddenly... I broke spacetime! I had entered the black hole from the project the loop before cause I wanted to try it, thought nothing really bad could come out of it and didn't even notice my duplicate. I was a bit confused as to why I didn't start that loop directly in the project but shrugged it off, today was finally the day I'd break the loop. And I broke spacetime.

This game for me was defined by a single moment. That moment when you realize that you have to take the core and replace the broken one with it. The whole hours of struggle and constant loops you go through, hours of floating endlessly through space knowing that time is stuck and you are stuck in it. That moment you solve that last riddle through context clues. That stunned me. And even after you take the core, the game playing that beautiful rendition of the end times because it's just as aware as you are that you are alone, in space, with one life and one shot. Just like real life.

Then after talking with them, I was heartbroken after learning that they themselves acknowledge that they are not exactly alive. The quantum signals that are throughout the solar system can also be heard underneath. Perhaps the Eye itself wishes to be found.
All that coupled with the End Times theme helps create a cohesive piece that nicely encompasses the steps most people had to take to reach the Ash Twin Project and take the core. It really feels as if it has all come to this moment.

My favorite moment when experiencing the game was when I stood on the quantum stone and teleported across the ember twin. I was shaken with the flashlight revelation. That night I lay in bed and thought about how this could be important. I realized that the “conscious observation” thing was very literal. That line-of-sight wasn’t just the path I was looking, but my literal observation of the object. I know it sounds obvious, but after that sank in I decided to experiment with my camera and sure enough, I figured out how to land on the Quantum Moon the very next morning. I was OVERJOYED when I touched down for the first time. After a few visits I realized the environment changed whenever I moved planets. So I played with the environments and ended up on the North Pole. I found Solanum and talked with him. The whole time I was gleefully smiling. That was the biggest moment for me besides the end of the game. Inviting Solanum into the campfire circle made that moment all the more meaningful for me in the end.
Hell of a game. It immediately shot to my top ten games of all time and I think it will remain their for many many years. I really hope this game gets a completely brand new sequel (not just the dope dlc) with a new solar system and mystery.

This game changed so much in the way I view video-games. A true piece of art, it’s soundtrack ties everything together, one that still takes my breath away months after finishing it. This is what games are all about, not empty soulless voids designed to suck up as much cash as possible, but masterpieces, designed to make you contemplate yourself and the world you live in, a game designed to bring joy and a sense of achievement from self-attained knowledge, not from a pretty new skin for your gun. I urge anyone who hasn’t to experienced this for themselves, to trust in all of us who have, and believe us when we say this game will make you cry, laugh, hide behind your covers and smile from ear to ear. Personally, no game I have ever played can come close to the feeling I got when finishing outer wilds, a feeling I had achieved something special. my game of the decade.
to the devs, I thank you for creating a true testament to what games should be. you deserve so much more than what you have probably got

(Minor spoilers) Getting to the sun station manually felt incredibly rewarding. Just the ludicrous idea of having to match up your position and speed with an object traveling so fast and so dangerously close to the sun made it memorable. I recall back to getting that ah-ha! moment when looking at the sun station (the last location for me to visit) and thinking: 'wait, we're in a vacuum, I could match up my speed and as long as my orbit is stable... I could totally get there!' It really made me feel like I was experiencing that scene from Interstellar when they dock with the spinning space station.

This fucking game man. The loop is such a genius mechanic that also ties into the storyline. Every time you hear End Times you know your time is up for this loop. But it's fine, there's always the next. You don't know why or how, but you know you'll come back. But eventually you learn whats behind it, and how it works, and what powers it. And when you pick up that warp core, you KNOW that's it. No more loops. If you fuck it up now you will not come back. And then 42:42 picks up. It's the same music again. But this time, it's more serious because you know it's for the last time. If you fail now, you fail forever. Never have I had such an OH SHIT moment in a game before. Absolutely brilliant 10/10

I'm not the best at puzzles, but threw everything I had into this game, taking notes about everything, but still finding a couple of times where I got completely stuck despite being confident that I found all the necessary clues. The community has a *dedication* against spoilers, thanks to knowing that simply using a walkthrough *isn't experiencing the game.* All I needed was a gentle nudge in the right direction a couple of times, like "hey, the symbol at the warp forge is important, remember what it looks like" to get those pieces to click together.

Final End Times...Wow, just...wow. This game was amazing. It's sense of exploration, of discovery, of those little a-ha moments you'd get, it was what made this game truly special. And when this song played, as I rushed to Dark Bramble, I had a realization. This was it, one way or another, I was leaving this place. There was no more to discover, no more to sift through, I would never experience it again. I almost cried, it was beautiful, yet so, so sad. As I was putting in the coordinates for the Eye, I heard the song again, but this time, it was the original. I panicked, realising that I needed to finish this now. I heard the sun explode, the wave of energy rushing towards me, I was terrified. I could pratically feel the heat as I dragged that orb to it's final spot. I was so close to death, but then, I was safe. I looked out and saw the Eye. It wasn't scary, like others had thought. In that moment, it was beautiful. As I made my way through the Eye, and into the dark forest, as I found Esker, and all the other explorers, as I realised that even Solanum was there, I smiled. I asked everyone to start playing, and it was stunning. I listened for a while before moving on, knowing this was the end. And when I finally worked up the courage to enter, and the ending theme played, and I saw the wave of energy rushing towards, I knew I was going to die. But this time, I wasn't scared, I was happy. I embraced the wave. And then I was gone. But I started something new. And it was beautiful.

Neither can the player ever experience the game for the first time again, and like the mc this world slips through our grasp. I barely made it 10 seconds before the tears starting flowing. This game came to me during one of the best and worst times of my life so far. I was still happy and could feel emotions. I felt the joy of discovery and the dread of failure so deeply while exploring that beutiful world, and the music was a huge part of the atmosphere and charm.
I was simultaneously in the early stages of losing myself to drugs and excess. Excess of stimulation, of stimulants, of the dopamine rush. Excess of hedonism and selfishness.
And now I am nothing but a hollow shell of the person I once was. Emotions amd memories have faded and now I simply float through life, barely existing. I've let all my friendships fall by the wayside. I've lost all zeal for learning and discovering. Even drugs are no longer a respite. They just don't hit the same way, and usually the wrong way.
I'm not entirely sure why this was recommended to me, but it brought me back like whiplash to that time in my life when I could discover an experience like The Outer Wilds and just fall headfirst into it. I played it so intently that i had dreams of being in the lander and taking off from Earth and our moon which were the size of the planets in the game. I began seeing the same sort of spiral patterns that the alien language was written in everywhere. Hell, I could even close my eyes while roasting a marshmallow and just see the campfire scene from the beginning of the loop, looking up at the stars like i was in the game.
God, I miss me. I miss who I was before I fucked around and found out. I'm truly afraid I'll never know that guy again.

I think my favorite one here atmospherically has to be sun station. It sounds so grand and cosmic while also sounding melancholy and tragic. It perfect accentuates the feeling of opening the emergency door and floating too the other side with the sun so close below you. Or discovering the nomais plans to blow up the sun without quite knowing why they would yet. It perfectly couples one of my favorite areas in the game and I love it for that.

After all the struggle and every trouble, in the end there's just a campfire, some friends, good music, and you lived an experience that makes you appreciate the scent of pines along the way. The only things that matters... I really wish that I could bring these feelings with me even after years, I'm so grateful to this game and to this beautiful soundtrack. (Spoilers) This game was such a simple yet beautifully executed concept. The feelings of discovery, wonder, and existential terror perfectly encapsulated in a simple game of finding bread crumbs around a galaxy slowly falling apart. The cherry on top for this entire game is the music. What you think is just subtle ambience is really the rope that binds the whole game together with the emotions they make you feel. The sense of haste you get at the end times when the sun goes supernova as you desperately try to get the last clue in before your next loop. The sense of calm and being at home that you get from Timber Hearth and the Main Menu, the place you constantly begin your journey at. The unease and terror you get from trying to navigate the Dark Bramble, the somber yet joyful tune that plays when you unify all the travelers as you take comfort in each other's song whilst you restart the universe. This game and its music is a perfect synopsis for this beautiful thing we call life, it's a journey, it's a struggle, it can be wonderful, it can be a scary. We each have been given a chance to participate in this extraordinary event we call existence.
