I love how you incorporate some of the less obvious elements of hygge. If anyone out there is thinking that hygge is just a concept and that no one in Denmark really lives like that, you are so wrong! I'm Danish and have practically been raised with live candles, blankets and a cup of tea. We have books in most rooms along with live plants. (Nature is really important). I also love how you mention the personal artwork. Some of my favorite decorative items in our home are made by my husband, kids or other friends or family. (The backdrop to our channel trailer is made by my husband for example). We haven't made a video on hygge (yet) but we did just make one today on how we set up our bedroom "Scandinavian style". I think one of my favorite things about our bedroom is the lighting. A lot of natural light (no blinds and only curtains at night) and then quite a few side lights. I also really like the wooden element that is in Danish design. There is something really cozy about wooden furniture and wooden accents here and there without it being a log cabin (those are really cozy too though, but in a different way. Thanks for a good video. You are so cute.
I definitely agree with side lighting. When I was younger, my dad had one of those lamps that is tall and bowl-shaped at the top that casts light up and outward, and it had this nice, warm, yellow light. This was in the corner of his living room next to shelves he made himself that had books and interesting rocks that he and I would find while hiking.
I think it's interesting that this has a name. We do all of this in Canada, I think it's just natural to want a cozy home in northern countries given our long winters. Nothing beats wool socks, warm drinks, biscuits or coffee cake, a crackling fire, candles and books.
I know this video is 6 months old, but I just found it and I wanted to say that one item that’s helped me feel more hygge that I bought this past year has been smart bulbs. I can easily dim them/change the hue through either my phone or my google home, and I also set them to automatically turn on 5 minutes before my alarm in the morning so I wake up more slowly 😊
Ahh I love this video! 😊❤️ I’m all about creating a cozy space. I love curling up under a blanket with some tea and a good book while cookies bake in the oven. So relaxing and cozy!
What a beautiful video that you've created! Your energy and love pops from the screen into our space. I only recently learned about this concept in fact. Your point that resonated so highly with me was bringing nature in. I've decorated this way subconsciously because it just made me feel so at peace. Before I took the time to learn about seed to sow, I would use artificial plants in our home. While there is nothing wrong with that, it was only the season that I was in, now i'm slowly transitioning these plants out for living plants that I have a memory of being a seed under my grow light only a short while ago. It makes my heart so full!
So often people underestimate the impact of our environment and the vibes it can release. Love ideas like Hygge and Ikigai and those ideas we don't necessarily have words for in English but we can all cultivate the feel of
Did not know there was a name for it! Just the way I like to have my Cottage. Lots of interesting lovely things, my hand made stuff, gifts from friends etc and lots of interesting reading material, for reading and not there just to look interesting or clever! I find cats an essential part, snuggled up with my cats on sofa with a good book and a hot chocolate is perfect, just where I want to be.
Just watching this video was calming! I've been using warm side lighting and blankets as a way to make the apartment feel cozier at night for a while :) I'll start incorporating some candles too...thanks for the tips!
I love the being at home and having a candle on and some music and two blankets to cuddle and watch movies, or shows. My very last would be having a clean house♡♡♡♡♡♡
Thank you for such a great video ! I also love essential oils to aromatize and bring even more cozzyness to our home ... UV lights keep all indoor plants gorgeous even in strong winters, 4 hours a day is more then enough to have fresh tomatoes in dec/jan (ha !) Regards from Denmark
Actually, it's not a u-sound. It's a Danish y-sound that doesn't exist in English so everyone sounds really silly trying to be stylish and modern with our old words from our impossible language.
Y in scandinavia is pronounced like a german u with dots on top. So if you know how to prononce that, than you're on it. The way she's pronouncing it (hooggah) sounds like our word for chopping something. And it's really bad haha.
@@yumyumkitty2104 make your lips like you’re saying whooo and then make them tighter in the direction of whistling then add the H whoooogeh. I would add an aquarium to the last point - bringing nature and life into your home. Obviously fish tank requires more time and work than pot plants, but it's absolutely worth it! My fresh water tropical tank is one of the most calming things ever! With live plants and beautiful fish, it has such a green depth, lovely! So I encourage anyone to look into this hobby ;) and I'm not talking about owning the fish bowl, because they're bad for fish!
Hi ! Candle safety 101 - ALWAYS use votives or glasses to put your tealight or candle in if it doesnt have one! I've worked at a candle store before and I've also been in a fire as a result of a tealight candle - And I witnessed a tealight candle on top of a laminate desk flick into a curtain because it had made the glue melt beneath the laminate and become detached! Flying candles is not safe! Please consider where you are putting your candles and look up candle safety if you are unsure! It doesn't take much to put a tealight into a glass or votive and definitely worth it to prevent a terrible accident or god forbid something worse! Get your hygge on but be safe about it !
The whole lighting thing I never have underestimated because I have really sensitive eyes sometimes too bright of light or the wrong color of light when I walk into certain spaces I have to put on sunglasses or squint
Everybody: Commenting on the right pronunciation. Me: I will never not call it Higgie, b/c I enjoy singing 'Gettin Higgie w/ it... nah nah nah nah nah=nah'.
Colour is very important as it has deep psychological effects. Warm calm colours soothe and ease the mind, not too much of any one colour. Random as possible, avoid looking like you have tried to hard to chase a look, just relax and let it happen, colour matching is so not important!. Don't have any two mugs, cups or plates matching, life is too important to. Sweat the small stuff!
Your pronounciation isn't that far off. Just imagine the Y pronounced like you would if you had to pronounce the letter "e" with your lips rounded. The sound is similar to the wovel the French "une" sound (just without the n-sound, obviously). The last wovel is said with less of an a-sound than the e-sound you make when you say "the". What is your favorite way to hygge?
Tea+blanket+candles+movie=amazing feeling!❤️ xoxo
Yes!! Love this!
Fake candes, tea, and a salt lamp. Been in 2 apt fires. Both caused by candles. Real candles are too much.
Hot cocoa or tea, fuzzy socks and blankets, face masks, baths, salt lamps, plants, essential oil diffuser. 😊💖
Lighting is a big one

Yes!! 🙌 I think being originally from Canada myself, I was immediately drawn to this concept because it gave a name to something I was already doing!
In Canada, we call it chilling out at home!
I like your correct pronounciation of hygge^^

Well I had been doping Hygge all my life, because I`m from Denmark, but it is so much fun to see this type of videoes - learn how others sees hygge😊
That’s so awesome!!
For those of us that aren't great with crafts. One idea is to put up pics from places your been that bring back fond memories.

Love it!! Music totally sets the mood ☺️

Loved the evergreen tree forest painting. 🌻
Hi! I love your lamp, can you please tell me where I can buy it?
I just read this book. They even have one for Hygge recipes. : ) My favorite way to add Hygge is candles during the day. Great video!
That’s awesome! And totally agree with you on the candles!
It’s hUga not hugA 😂 (in hermiones voice)

English doesnt have any specific word for this ambience other than coziness but In French we have a word very close to hygge. It's "chaleureusité".

Sorry!! ☺️ I hear so many conflicting views on how it’s said. I need a danish person to teach me :)
