  • After 30 years and only one major break in that span, the original run of Power Rangers comes to it's end with the newest release on Netflix, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.
Not only is it the final season, it's the shortest and relies little on existing footage borrowed from the Japanese Super Sentai (outside of zord/megazord footage from Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger). There are a couple firsts, nods to other seasons, returning characters, as well as tweaks to the storytelling that had been an issue in the past few years.
Does Cosmic Fury serve as a good bookend to a 30 year legacy? Or is it too little, too late?

I did read something, not sure how accurate this is, but apparently the actor playing Ollie was committed to another project, so his being evil again for most of the season was so they could shoot around his other commitments. Take that with a grain of salt though.

One weird implication of evil not being a personality or a choice, it's just a state you have if you get sprayed with something, is that there is probably a formula that would turn Zed and all the other monsters not-evil.
Since the Rangers know this is how evil works in their universe, and they choose not to make an anti-evil spray, the Rangers are just constantly murdering aliens for no good reason. Rangers just love killing.

I've gotta say that acting wise, Ollie was probably my favorite ranger actor in the season. Evil Ollie was as standout and can we talk about how his 'evil ranger' suit was WAY better than the Cosmic Fury suits?! When he finally got his Cosmic Fury Blue suit in the finale, I was disappointed because his evil suit was WAY better in comparison.

I don’t like Cosmic Fury not because it is a bad season, because it is harmless and jam packed with nostalgia for me. But I don’t like it because of what it represents it was supposed to be an end of an era, the end of the current continuity. And this is what we get?
Instead of going out with a bang, it goes out with a whimper. It feels rushed other than the over arching narrative, almost nothing is allowed to breathe, I’m fine with a 10 episode structure but make the episodes longer that way we have time to take in what is happening before we have to move on. Then there were plot points that took way too long to have their pay off. Fern said it best when she said she was a ranger for five minutes. The relationship with Izzy and Fern often feels forced, like in today’s climate they have to have a homosexual couple but rather than having be natural it feels a little like let’s gawk at the lesbians, now the LGBTQ+ community can’t complain at us. This is more a complaint against DF than CF perhaps I just got used to it. Oh and if I hear the word “Babe” again I’ll lose my mind.
The design of the suits were terrible and you know the only reason they look that way was so they can save money on toy production. But to me they would be a hard sell because they are boring. Even 5 y/o me would say the same thing. The felony is compounded by the fact that Kyuuranger has some of the most interesting suit designs for quite some time.
While the season was teeming nostalgic references for the most part I found myself feeling that I’d rather be watching the episodes they referenced than what I was watching.
The acting while much better than Dino Fury still feels a little wooden.
The constant presence of other ranger teams in the background (sometimes literally) was aggravating. If it isn’t necessary, don’t mention it. But teasing me with possibly seeing other teams fighting only to show me nothing? Honestly while it was cool to see Billy, Heckyl, Mick and Minh (sort of) again I felt cheated when they would constantly make mention of the other teams. You didn’t have to show their faces but they could have given us the ranger war we should have gotten with super Megaforce (that’s a whole other conversation). It was kinda cool to see some of the past megazords but same thing as with the other teams. There is an old adage when it comes to storytelling and that is, show don’t tell. There is not a show that exists that exemplifies that more than CF.
It left too many questions unanswered and left it too open ended. which going back say 15 years ago I would have said is fine but now I’m a little sick of it but this more a commentary on the state of media in general rather than a commentary on Power Rangers itself.
There were some things I did like about CF though.
Amelia as red I felt while a little forced initially it didn’t seem too far removed from the character that it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. She was caring but tough and she knew her priorities. This was demonstrated with her desire to Ollie back, she didn’t let her love for Ollie take away from the fact that they were fighting for the fate of the universe and she only went for Ollie when the mission allowed. She was also her own person and she didn’t need Ollie to validate her, which gave her a strength which is refreshing to see, this in turn made her way more attractive, to me anyway. I know that’s not the point but that’s just how I feel about it and I’m not apologising for it either. Also did I imagine it or did the chest area on her suit seem more pronounced than that of Izzy’s or Fern’s?
The relationship between Ollie and Zedd I thought was well done and definitely had either a father/son or master/apprentice vibe about it but given how short the season is probably went on too long.
Zordon is still “alive” and well. I will admit that I got wide eyed and misty eyed at that revelation. Also I could see Russell Curry’s head being used if they made further MMPR specials that would have Zordon return.
I did like how there was an over arching story that every episode then stemmed from rather than feeling like each episode is it’s own self contained thing and could take place almost at any point in that season’s timeline.
In summary it feels rushed, tried too hard to make things nostalgic and what it did do well it did way too little way way way too late. Now this is all my personal opinion, if you liked or even loved CF more power to you but for me personally this is NOT how you end 30 years of history, and I really wanted to love it because I have been with Power Rangers since it’s very beginning but I just couldn’t.

I thought Amelia was a bit forced as the leader. I did however like chasing after the evil boyfriend thing wish it had more time to be that. They kinda made Ayion a bit softer then I remembered him being. Zayto was down graded even tho they tried to pretend he was off to better things. I liked Izzy being the over protective gf. Just wish it could have got planned into better

I'm black and I didn't mind Zayto getting replaced as Red Ranger by a white woman. He was the team leader for TWO SEASONS of Dino Fury!
On top of that, dude scored a higher title than Red Ranger as the Zenith Ranger kinda like how Tommy became the new leader instead of Jason after becoming the White Ranger (yeah, IMO Jason was still lead until his character was written off the show).
My main issue is that dude kept fainting within 2 mins whenever he was onscreen. Amelia was a pretty good Red Ranger. I can't say GREAT because we only really saw her as a Red Ranger for what 7 out of 10 episodes. She showed some real leadership qualities that I wish could've been showcased more in a longer season/series.

Story decisions that feel contradictory or wasted opportunities. Filler characters who add nothing to the plot. And a finale with no real stakes. This is how you end a 30 year legacy? I really enjoyed CF. It’s easily the most fun I’ve had watching a new season for the first time since RPM. I do have my issues with it, like the Zords were really underused and underwhelming. Also it was a shame to not have all seven rangers morph together because Ollie spent most of the season brainwashed (I don’t even remember if he piloted a Zord or not). Setting complaints aside, this season does give me hope for whatever Hasbro/Netflix has planned for the reboot universe….I just hope they don’t cancel it after two season only because it didn’t get Stranger Things ratings…..

  • @conmanay4563
    @conmanay4563 9 месяцев назад +6

My main issue was the ending.
We spent the entire season building up to Master Zedd, he fights for about a minute, then gets cheap shot by the random new villian. While it admittedly was nice to see she wasn’t so stupid as to just back zed for no reason, the fact that she suddenly acts on DBZ cell regeneration rules just so she can show up out of nowhere only to get splattered then not come back is very frustrating
The thing that bothers me the most was definitely how Zedd ended. They wanted it to be more of a moral victory of Zedd giving up willingly but the fact that he did so only for survival really robs anything that could have been interesting about it
I have no issues with the main villains no being defeated but this just wasn’t satisfying. If you want an awesome ending that didn’t kill off the villian, look to Time Force.
After my favorite fight in the franchise, Ransik is wounded and limping, and accidentally injures his daughter, then Jen shoots him. A common misconception is that they only won because Ransik gave up, but Jen’s blaster knocked him down and there was nothing stopping her from shooting him again and again until he was knocked out or dead.
This ending has the best of both, the rangers just barley managed to beat Ransik and you get the more sophisticated ending of Ransik feeling remorse and surrendering, completing the them about how people can change their own destiny

As a standalone season I thought it was fine. Not bad, but not special.
As the last season of a 30 year ongoing story, it was disappointing. I think it would of been better if they had at least 20 episode. I personally think they trimmed too much to avoid no filler (something i didnt actually mind).

But I still wished they continued to more Super Sentai Series into the next Power Rangers Series like Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger, Mashin Sentai Kiramager and Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger because I always wanted to see the version adapted into the next Power Rangers series storyline.

I realize how ethnocentric that sounds out loud, but beginning in season 2 of Power Rangers they did make Sentai teams around what they thought would cross over well in other countries. That's likely why they skipped so many seasons before settling on Dino fury's footage

This season feels like labor of love and accounted for some of the poor optics of prior seasons after RPM:
Megaforce didn't even mention the morphin grid. Dino charge had Riley coded as gay, but didn't commit. Ninja Steel coded Sarah as white despite her actress being Brazilian, which suggested that they weren't willing to have more than one race on a team unless they were white. Samurai regressed on the maturity the prior seasons established, and was whitewashed given the Japanese theme. Beast Morphers was a step in the right direction, but they fell into the trap of giving the main female heroine no real story arc outside of dating another Ranger, who was also coded as gay until he became the Gold Ranger.
In some ways Cosmic Fury was even more mature than RPM, so I appreciate and love this season all around despite its imperfections.

As someone who didnt even watch Dino Fury before watching Cosmic Fury and I just havent in general watched PR since Super Megaforce, I still found the show to be.....okay
I think my biggest problem was how....empty it felt by the end, I dont know whats the problem with Hasbro snd building up to epic climaxes and then delivering....nothing, the fact we didnt get even a single full 7 members team morph and rolecall on the final season is just depressing, and in general, there was no climax, the closest was maybe the past megazords sequence, the scene with Zordon's return was very heartfelt but it can't and shouldn't carry the end by itself, the resolution with Zedd felt weird, I genuinely think that it was Power Ranger's attempt to do something like Zenkaiger's ending, but without actually understanding what made that ending so strong and impactful, thinking that just because it deviates from not having a huge final fight is the reason it hits hard.
I also do agree on the references...kinda, I think some of the details are very cool, the more subdued cameos and things like the start on Zordnia are great, but the random appearance of past rangers is such a bother, specially because they could have been handled so much better.

Yeah, as much as I hate to be that fan that's kinda why I tend to prefer sentai. It's just the energy there.
I really wished CF did a big dramatic full team morph like seasons tend to do at the end, I wish zords had more granduer and not "Oh they're here oh they're gone".
Idk if this is me expecting too much but the lack of energy kind of made it harder to care. Like I kinda wish Ollie getting his CF suit had more dramatics because he's finally a good guy again. Yeah, I mention the comic in the comic so what's your point? Even if you read it, it has no bearing on how Heckyl came to be involved in this, why Tarrick knew him, and what the stakes are/importance is for him to be there.

Agreed. It would be fine if it were inconsequential or was purposefully leading the audience to read the comic. But this feels more like a random drop to appeal to the fans than serve to expand any of the content, either show or comic.

The season is overall bad but not as bad as dino furry
Amillia becames a red ranger for no reason at all than just have a red ranger, they didn't trainer her to be a leader, and there should be more episodes to fleshed out as a leader
Zaito was just written out of the show as much as we belive that he got upgrated is still fell like he shown less in the show
Izzy and fern's relationsgip is boring as much as there is "representation" like what is the point of their relationship if you show nothing in the show? Fern becames orange ranger for no reason at all because the writers would not allower for them to be a normal relationshop
Olliver was just an Asshole this entier season, like the dude just got his joker arc
As for the black and the gold they where just there
The two squid villains where bad, zed was good but overall he was just been defeated way to quickly, as much as i love the returning character it fells like way to much fanservice rather than build something upon it, i get that they try to make a lore of it but still it fells like a mess
The blue mighty morther and the black dino charge ranger where just there with no substance
The Morpin master are just bad concept entierly that breaks the show since you rely on them for anything and they fell like a deus ex machina for most of the time, and they fell useless
Overall the season was pretty much bad, the costumes and the zords do not help AT ALL

There were some good things about Cosmic Fury, but overall I felt that it was a convoluted dumpster fire. It was not a nice end to 30 years of Power Rangers, it was a sad, quiet disappointment.
Power Rangers really should’ve ended with Countdown to Destruction, because it was high quality (for Power Rangers) and it wrapped things up nicely. Sure, the show would’ve been much shorter, but it would’ve gone out with a satisfying bang, while a lot more people witnessed its end, many of whom would’ve been original fans who made it into a worldwide hit back in 1993.
Now, 30 years later, Power Rangers ends with 1/6th the number of episodes it had in the 1st Season, with very little marketing, on a streaming service that not everyone has, instead of on free, broadcast television nationwide. Who’s watching it anymore, other than hardcore fans who wanted to see it through to the very end, even if just out of morbid curiosity?

@@JerimemeI think they should've ditched the Dino Fury cast and gone full send with a new cast and fully adapt Kyuranger especially given Kyuranger was made with American Audiences in mind and thus made a translatable plot with room for inclusion as well as 48 EPISODES which can be a perfect 24 episode split with 2 seasons. Plus the over all vibes really harnessed some of the great dark themes from Power Rangers such as Merrick bleeding before he was freed in Wild Force. It's a shame they just now decided to make an "Original Series" by desecrating a really good show that was made to be a Power Rangers Show as well as Super Sentai. I'd also like to reinforce my point by stating that Cosmic Fury wasn't easy to set down, each episode didn't have a "Conclusion" it was just a cliff hanger making you feel obligated to binge it. Kyuranger advances the plot while having: Conflict, a Monster of the Week and also finish the episode nicely, it makes you want to binge it without the guilt of missing out, you aren't obligated to keep watching and can stop at any episode and feel fulfilled watching it, unlike Cosmic Fury which sacrifices that for a 10 Episode time frame, barely any marketing and a lack luster plot with unexplained holes and Zord Footage that doesn't work.

I think it's rough, genuinely I actually kind of thought it was the worst season... It feels so soulless and just shoved out. It does all these callbacks to years past, but then never integrates them. If this was supposed to be the end of a 30 year run the season should have been a decent length and feel actually integrated. Like- I'm all for the cosmic zords not matching the theme of the suits, BUT why not have had some of those zords unlocked by rangers of the past i.e. Billy unlocks the use of the blue wolf zord initially? And while Billy works within the story to me, it really, really felt like their original plan had been for Tommy to fill his role or at the least maybe even Jason. The CGI zords at the end felt kind of like a slap in the face if you ask me, like Billy says they can't spare anyone for this massive threat, but then when like it's down to the wire FINALLY people show? Like- had rangers from years past been sprinkled within through the whole thing the ending wouldn't have felt as insulting, but as is it kind of just feels like, "here, you can have this, now shut up." Sucks we don't get to see Zayto in his new threads outside one episode, also found the muscle padding just so bad in the new suits. Overall I think there was a lot of great ideas, but not nearly enough time dedicated to them. Zedd was handled really well, but yeah the squids felt so tacked on, Heckyl while great to see and would have been a FANTASTIC rep to have for his season throughout this new one again, just feels like the barest minimum. To me this feels just so shit coming off Once and Always. Like the acting is fine for what it is, but it's just so much wasted potential, why not have Tarric become the purple ranger? Be the key to unlocking at zord? Like- they could have had the team hopping through space trying to locate Zedd to save Ollie and stop him picking up new zords a long the way and liberating planets without rangers, maybe teaming up with one on a handful who are doing the same? Would have done some really cool shit that way to help further the brand, bring in the Purple Solar ranger maybe, or one of the Hyperforce Rangers, like- this is supposed to be the final send off of PR as we know it and again it just feels like a super rushed slapped together thing that imo respects itself much less than you give it credit for. First proper female red ranger, and she gets 10 ep. First gay couple who are BOTH rangers, 10 ep. First amputee 10 episodes and they barely address it, it's almost like it never even really happened. I don't know, I feel like you're overly praising it personally, but hey that's just my two pennies. To me it's even a weaker season compared to the previous two, just- again my opinion. I think what it does right feels like such the bare minimum imo I can't even register them as praise worthy? Or like they don't stand out to me as much as they seemed to, to you. But admittedly I don't actively watch the show either. I don't know, the mediocre and bad I guess just far outweighed the little good imo.

My only thing against cosmic fury (and I understand why it didn’t happen but still) is that Amelia did not get a battlizer besides TJ (and technically Jason kinda as well as Marv from Hyperforce) she is the only red ranger to not get a battlizer and it kinda takes away part of her being red especially when adapting a season like Kyuranger where they had two red rangers so they had the perfect opportunity to give her a Phoenix themed power up and give her the Pheonix zord. I understand why it didn’t happen because it was only 10 episodes and Hasbro only wanted 10 zords but it still feels like something was taken away from that opportunity. Especially since every red ranger (except for the other two female red rangers) since I’m Space has gotten a battlizer. Beast Morphers is already tied into Dino Fury and is in the same universe. It'll give them something to do, and it's not outside the realm of possibility that Tarrick/the Dino Fury gang knows them considering Coral Harbor and Pine Ridge are neighboring cities. Only issue is Scrozzle recognizing them but they could just stay on Squillia's squidrill and avoid Zedd's.

My interpretation was that Billy couldn't let go of Zordon and after seeing the consequences of attempting to bring him back (Rita coming back and Trini dying), he finally moves on and accepts he's gone. It's sort of in parallel to Minh having revenge after the death of Trini and even Billy's own guilt over it. It's about accepting what's reality and going forward, rather than letting the past control your actions and feelings. I think Cosmic Fury kinda walks that back as it just places Billy in a situation where he's tempted to explore that possibility again. It's like waving drugs in front of a recovering addict. They don't have to take it but simple exposure is how many relapses start.

He knows he can’t bring him back but he’s still given his closure in knowing he doesn’t NEED to bring him back. He’s okay.

It was rushed much like MegaForce/Super MegaForce, and just like 10 years ago, it adds another inconsistency to the lore. Notably dinosaurs and constellations, that reeks of stupidity in the writers' room. The evil Ollie subplot was pointless so they added in honor of the "Jesus" David Frank to appease his die-hard fanbase. The generals from unadapted seasons: Zyuohger's Naria and Bangrey; KyuRanger's Ikargen, Scorpio, Kukuruga and Quervo, were served as both cannon fodder and flipping the bird to the Sentai fans. The CGI MegaZords at the final episode were an eyesore compared to the 199 Hero Great Battle's climax. The final scene is just an imitation from Samurai's He Ain't Heavy Metal, He's My Brother. I kinda don't like that they're not adapting the Sentai suits. I get why, some fans want Power Rangers to be a bit more mature but (again in my opinion), i think this season managed to strike that Perfect Balance between Serious Tones and Silly moments despite not having much.
The Show itself was pretty good, the character development across the board was pretty good (excluding Billy, I'm sorry i love the fact he was here, infact I was Squealing whenever he got involved and even said "Get Billy" when they were Stranded on that Sandworm planet but he kinda had no development)
I was kinda mad they revisited the Evil Ollie plot but it grew on me once saw the new suit and the fact he still used the Old Morphing Call, like a Literal and Metaphorical Corruption of their powers through Ollie.
As for the overall Vibe of it yes it was more mature especially with the arm loss (i genuinely wasn't expecting that) but it felt a bit... Unnatural to me. Again my opinion but I never liked the idea of making power rangers Mature but who knows maybe it'll change when the next project comes.
As a whole this being end of Power Rangers, it went off with a Decent Bang. The Fireworks didn't work properly but after finagling with the wires the bang was worth it. Terrible metaphor but you get the idea. Not THE BEST but absolutely far from the worst they could've done.

One thing people keep missing is that power rangers as we know it is not going to change, sure the reboot is happening but that's going to coincide with season 31, it will take a while granted but we already know that since zayto said see you next time, as well as Billy having new motivation because zordon is out there, as well as apparent interest in adapting king ohger that we will get more seasons, it makes no sense to throw away 30 seasons of lore that has nowhere near been sufficiently exploed to make a reboot that most likely won't succeed especially since the TV show is a cash cow, is there full idea, kind of like how they planned a movie universe in 2017 along with the show, cosmic fury was ok on its own but not good at all as a finale to the series, however it was enjoyable enough but heckle and ninja steel red were underutilized, especially heckle, he appears then disappears both with no explanation, and ninja steel red didn't even have a proper ground battle. I enjoyed it though it's just there's a lot of negative stuff around it that need to be addressed, however it's definitely not better than samurai or dino charge, that's kind of overhyping but I definitely respect the opinion, also a nice goodbye to 30 years of the power rangers legacy this is not. If this does end up being the last season, it's definitely a letdown and a face-plant in the mud

You must be living in a alternate universe. Nowhere did Hasbro or Simon say that a Season 31 will councide with the Reboot. This is definitely the end if the prime universe for now. Maybe if the reboot flops they'd return back for more, but from what we can tell the reboot is Hasbro's main priority for PR.

They make him a backup dancer who is easily killed. As a longtime Power Rangers fan, Cosmic Fury was awesome, great story, great motivations, the Megazord is exceptional. Now one thing that irritated me a little was the appearances, because it was the closing of the franchise, important Rangers from this franchise were supposed to appear and another thing that irritates me is how Hasbro simply erases the Disney era from existence. due to not having a visible explanation about the S.P.D. Saban stepped in around 2010 to buy Power Rangers back from Disney, which is what lead to Shinkenger being adapted into Samurai/Super Samurai.

Oh man, I've been holding onto this. I have a few points.
Shoving Ollie to the villain after JUST establishing a relationship gives nothing to the stakes since the show ended with then just getting there
It's weird that they had a dino theme based on.. the helmets alone? The Zords are disregarded completely. We have so many different themes and zord animal types that aren't even acknowledged, like the zodiac. You see Fern using this Solonasaurus but in a zord with a scorpion symbol.
I think not having a monster become a ranger is a waste lf the sentai footage. It feels like Slyther and Mucus were brought back and were this post credit in dino fury for nothing but plot exposition. If anything, make that sequence worth it by making them worth it. Using aliens (or sporix) to become rangers introduces such a nuanced layer to Power Rangers even if they are cheesy. I would have liked someone else to fill this role but we have to work with what we have.
Also, using Tarrick as a purple ranger could disregard Heckyl's poor rushed story here.
Also disregarding Ollie in a 10 episode series as a finale is just disrespectful. He's a main character with less screen time.
Also i think ending Cosmic with Zayto dying and pink becoming Red id buy it to leave the future more vague

That aside the season itself was fun. Id much rather a shorter season of like 10 to 15 episodes. Not sure if i could dive into a 20+ episode season again unless its broken into particular narrative arcs like some anime do.

    • @mintbari

Apparently the suits were at least partly designed for easier toy manufacturing... which is hilarious given that we don't appear to be getting any Cosmic Fury toys at all outside of the Megazord, morpher, and Zenith Ranger role play set.
Also, length doesn't really matter to me (insert joke here). A season could be 10 episodes, or it could be 40 episodes. What matters is what they do in that time span. I'd rather get a short, more focused season like this if it can get through a proper storyline without excessive filler. For longer seasons, definitely do arcs (which isn't just an anime thing).

Why Billy couldn't have entered the morphin grid and the possible Zordon talk to Billy instead and give closure to his ex student and power ranger. Thus would have finished the genre nicely. I thought Cosmic Fury was pretty good. Where I think it could have been better is by having more cameos. I don't mean just from earlier episodes of Dino Fury. And I don't consider a cameo someone that is in the show as a regular. The reason I wanted more cameos is because, well, this is supposed to be the end of the franchise as we know it. Besides that, the more cameos in the show means it would give the Power Ranger fans more to talk about and see who saw this And who missed that. Which would have forced fans to rewatch the show or episodes so they could then see what they heard about but missed before. But anyway, as a whole, I thought they did pretty good.
