    The problem with 360 videos is thats massive work and noone serious without some geeks use realy a headset It needs more professional skills to make 360 videos and it works. The producers of the hardware have just no ideas. Look to japan there are good producers with the professional skills to make videos that you can use without headset.

    Reframing 360 video is absolutely a game changer in the field of action cam but still some improvement to protect lenses and battery life. For 360 video it needs a specific scenario and it is just a beginning for this new way of filming. I see opportunity for 360 video in training purpose, I am working in partnership with a company that is doing this kind of software and needs short 360 video production or training for their customers

    360 cameras would make unboxings alot easier, it would make filming alot easier.
    But saying 360 will fade away is like saying 3D will fade away, 3D never fades away, it goes away for a limited time but comes back even better than ever.
    Love my new 3dsxl.

    Your comments mirror my experience, esp. wrt 360 photos. I color correct the 360 version before making tiny planets, then post both to FB. For video, the the freecaptures are where its at, plus they're editable on the phone - again easy workflow. And for the vids I want to preserve at 5.7k, I just put em thru the desktop Insta Studio, then PowerDirector. Hey, you want a used Sony AS200V action cam? hehe

  • @lk5515
    @lk5515 5 лет назад +1

    agree 100%!!!
    i have one concern, video stitching is really not working and very hard to solve. 5.7K is making it ok, but once we are getting higher resolution in future - the problem with stitching will show up more. it is ok if all objects far away, but if you have close and far away objects, we have a problem!

    I really enjoy 360 video, but you're right, I don't necessarily love long form 360 content. I follow several channels that upload 30 min or longer tours of interesting places, and I typically jump around. However, shorter 360 videos (12 min or less) can usually keep my attention for the whole thing. I don't have a VR headset, but I use youtube on my laptop and really enjoy it. I think the marketplace shows that most people are using mobile devices so I'm probably not the standard person, but yes I do enjoy 360 content. I also like reframed stuff too. Especially if the videographer can make it look like standard video.

    Agree, re-framed 360 as action cam opens great opportunities. I’m using a 360 to add that extra amazing shoot but very sparse - relying on 3-4 other “traditional “ camera for the main narrative.

      It'll continue to grow. I suggest that most people now have no clue about 360. But over time as talented people produce great videos with it- it'll catch on. I show some I've made and most people say, "what the hell?"- whether it's an actual 360 or an overcapture video. Some, the smarter ones, will say, "how did you do that?" but when I try to explain they don't get it. So, the talented folks like yourself are helping a lot by blowing people's minds with great stuff!
      But, got a question- do you have any concern about the safety of the LIPO batteries? I've read some horror stories about them. But, it may be that these very small LIPO batteries aren't so dangerous as the much larger ones for larger products. I'm led to believe we should use LIPO safe pouches to charge/store them- and the best of all is an ammo box. But that might look suspicious at a customs check. :)

      @@JoeZorzin I agree with your comments. Some of my viewers are now asking me how I did that and with what. I am enrolled in both One X FB user groups. I see a ton of 360 stuff posted each day. Some is extraordinarily talented work, but a lot is beginners trying to get something posted. As they get better so will the acceptance of the 360 environment because they will go beyond posting it to just dedicated FB user groups.

    I mostly reframe when breaking out my dual lenses, however some videos require 360 to get the best results, for these I post just that one segment as an independent 360 just like you mentioned about the photos, it gives the viewer more time to explore the space on their own.

  • @izzyrazzbuffnik2326

    I'm into 360 for the versatility of being able to re frame my shots without having to worry about gimbals, tripods and other bulky gear. What we are seeing here is the beginning of the end of large DSLRs. In probably less than 10 years sensors will be much bigger and cheaper, plus computer processing power so much more powerful. Which will allow over capture that will enable a much higher resolution edited and re framed result that we're currently seeing.
    BTW, Iceland rocks! You're going to love it! Have you read any of the sagas?

    Always been curious about your reasoning on this; especially before your branding change. I completely agree 360 cameras are quickly becoming the action cams of today. Reframing 360 footage is such a great use and adds some extra fun into editing. Cant wait for the Fusion 2!!
    Now, even with all your good reasoning I will also still be publishing 360º vids along side the Reframed vids. I feel like it's on us 360 content creators to help improve and evolve the format wether the super numbers are there or not.

    Great to see you are traveling Ben and great video. I love the re framing ability of the One X and found this a fantastic way to share great looking video. How ever photos I do tend to share the 360 versions, so doing very much like you have said. I have the Oculus GO and Quest as well as Rift and they all have benefits and specific uses. VR 180 is not too bad to watch but I agree with the 360 as you get lost trying to follow and can make you feel a little nauseous!

  • @MarkHarveyArt
    @MarkHarveyArt 5 лет назад +1

    Just started re-framing and agree it's far easier to share and watch, but nothing gets away from that 360 experience when you have the appropriate head gear. I think thats why I started using the VUZE XR. The ability to see behind in 360 was something I got over pretty quickly.

    I bought my first 360 camera about a year and a half ago for one purpose only-to try to capture the northern lights (which can be an all-sky phenonmenon) from places like Iceland, and then reframing the output into a standard video. The new Insta360 reframing software really has changed the game. It was so tedious to get a smooth, level tracking shot using traditional video software. I agree, the appeal of full 360 video will be limited for now (I don't watch it either).

  • @DavidAddis

    Good points, Ben! I'm using reframed 360 (and sometimes even my VR180 footage) more and more as well. I do find the colours and dynamic range not a patch on my full-frame mirrorless camera, but it's certainly useful in a pinch.

    I recently received a GoPro Max for my birthday a few days ago. I’ve already learned how to reframe and uploaded my first reframed 360 video of a hayride with the family. As I watched my video I wished I was able to rotate around the screen to view the surroundings. The reason I want to do that is so that when my wife and I are long gone, my children and grandchildren can be able to watch these videos in virtual 360. I’m having a very difficult time with uploading a virtual 360 video onto RUclips. Would you please show how one would go about doing that?

  • @TiaanKruger
    @TiaanKruger 5 лет назад +1

    I dont think I will really use my insta360 one x for 360 videos, or even really photos (obviously there will be cases). But the whole overCapture/reframe thing is where it comes in for me. Especially with my interests being eboarding, hiking, sight seeing, etc.
    It allows me to focus less on the framing of shots, and more on enjoying the actual activity. Which is what it is really all about.
    I know that I am not even doing it to really make a living from it, but enjoy making videos for family and friends, but even then, having framing off on videos destroys it.
    360 cameras just removes that whole part. Add to that the relative ease with which you can make vids with insta360, and it is all just a no brainer for the casual video maker (vs other cams)

    I think 360 long-form works best in an immersive environment where there is an event with continuous interest. I shot a reenactment battle all in 360 where the viewers could follow the action from whichever side the attackers came from. I then took the same video, flattened it to 16:9 and added the attackers viewpoint as a PIP shot from my Sony FDR AX-33 (BOSS stabilized). Both were posted to YT. I do not get a massive viewer count since I am not monetized, but the viewership between the two was not that far off since yet thy ran approximately the same length. In my opinion if you use 360 for long-form you've got to pick and choose the appropriate scenario. BTW I am 'thumbs up 20'. Your videos do much to promote and legitimatize the incorporation of 360s into the world of videography. Most of us are still students of this technology and you make a heck of a teacher.

    Ah soo good and glad you mentioned it! Yup definitely agree that 360 camera are moving into action cam space. I've noticed I've hardly picked up my go Pros anymore, the only use cases I might take them out are chest mounted shots, underwater or longer Tim lapses. But mannn none of that compares to having the ability to reframe 360 footage... It's like shooting in RAW you can recover so much. Although it technically does increase the post production time and not for casual market yet I would say, the workflow with normal gopro video is still great for that audience I say because it's a familiar to normal phones and point and shoot. Anyways! Cheers again for sharing Ben! Always love the content and your travels look awesome! Glad you're ticketing off some bucket list countries as well keen to visit Iceland one day 😀 don't forget about us all in Australia 🇦🇺!

    Having just bought a insta360 one for $70, I would say this is absolutely true. Not having worry about framing, stabilization, or post-process editing is really liberating when you travel on vacation. You can just hold it and enjoy the sights instead of wasting time on filming. It's also great when traveling with multiple people because it's 360 and wide angle even if you crop the video. The only downside is the cost. I would have loved to get the one x or one r but I'm not shelling out $400 for a new camera right now but I was able get a great deal for the insta360 one. I personally don't use it for 360 vr which for now I think is a gimmick.

    Thank you Ben for bringing this up. I planned to do a 360 video on my hike in Mt. Kinabalu in Feb 2019. Then I found it really hard to put all the footage together as one video project without Premier (One X app is good at editing one shot only, and Adobe's monthly system...). Massive upgrade is needed on hardware to let the video run smoothly (even I know you made a video about the tricks on Preimer). The final output is extraordinary huge leads to size related issues - disk space, super long upload time, limited bandwidth, pool video quality for viewers. The New York Times 360 coverage in Iraq two years ago still giving me hope. May be one day there will be a game changing solution that make everything smooth and easy. I can bring everyone onto the mountain by wearing a goggle.

    Thanks Ben👍, I was a 360 sceptic🤨, please forgive me man... Cos I have seen the light💫😂I ride an electric skateboard and have used various action cams, phones, mirrorless cam + gimbal. And then I saw a 360 video re-edited flat that a friend had shot🤯 It was a no brainer, res is a bit low but for Instagram it’s fine... at the moment😉 I bought the instaoneX. It gives me so much more freedom to ride and not constantly think about the ‘shot’ and then chose the angle later in a pretty awesome mobile app. Which is great cos I can then upload to video editor and treat the 360 footage I’ve just had the best fun reframing ‘hands on’ in my iPad, like normal footage. Totally concur, re RUclips and 360. I would like to add similarly posting to Instagram in 16:9 will hurt your numbers, big time. I also have my suspicion that shorter 10-15 secs engaging content reap bigger numbers than an equally engaging 59 sec video. I’m enjoying working my way through your videos👍 And now you’ve got me looking at the Ricoh Z1. I think I might be hitting the 360 virtual tour trail quite soon. Thanks again. Doug

    Can't agree more...I'm lost for traditional action cameras to the 360. I wasn't tempted in any way by the new Osmo Action, because it gives no extra value. I have the OneX, a mini tripod and a small selfie stick in the pocket of my trousers, virtually all the time, you never know, when a good shot comes around the next corner 😉
    Also I leave it running while I shoot with my FZ200 bridge, lately on a Corpus Christi procession. Got a great mix of stills and unusual angle vids out of that, I've put a series of the overcapture result on my channel (not an edit, just the clips in chronological order and some music), following a debate, if a 360 is usable for weddings. Sure, classical (action) cams have more resolution, but the framing always outweighs resolution imho, a dead on reframed 360 shot will win against a crystal clear highres bad framed pic everytime.

Can I use the software that comes from the camera company of do I need specific one. I post edit in power director, is that now a needless program?

    Seeing this video is 3 years old, I was hoping for 360 videos to perform better on RUclips now on 2022. But NO.
    It's a bummer to see myself investing time editing a 360 video and later see it getting very few views.
    I'm at a point where I'll keep posting 360 because it's still fun, but I think I'll also upload a "plain" reframed version of them.
    Anybody has similar experience with their 360 performing shitty on yt? If so, is there a better platform to share 360 videos (specially of travel)?

    I was just watching the 6th season of "Comedians in Cars" with Jerry Seinfeld on Netflix. This episode is with Jamie Fox. All of the shows have GoPro cameras mounted on the windshield to record their driving around. At the end of this episode- for a few seconds- you can see them playing around with a mounted One X camera on the selfie stick! It's nice to think that these pros are using it. First time I've ever seen the camera being used outside of the online community.

    I believe 360 videos work great for tours as it lets people see all around a location, unlike a regular video where they are stuck with one view, and with a VR headseat they can feel as if they were there. It can help people plan better for a trip as they can see if a certain place is worth visiting or not, and also for people that can't travel for whatever reason it takes them to places that they always wanted to visit and makes them feel as if they were there with a vr headset.
    That is why I made my channel so that people can explore different locations and enjoy them even if they can't leave home. It does take a whole lot of time to edit the videos but I believe is worth, and will continue doing it for as long as I can.😀

    Hey Ben, I didn't really get your reason for not posting 360 videos. Too long? Isn't it possible to edit them to be shorter and keep only the interesting parts? I find the possibilities interesting. Shoot everything and just take the angle you need for normal video - never miss a shot. Also not sure I understood the part about stabilization being better either. When the camera is shaking or bobbing up and down, the angles change no matter what, don't they? There may not be any need to crop anything since it's 360 but the change in angles will always make it impossible to really be 6-axis, wouldn't it? PS. I bought a Theta 4 years ago and sadly ditched it after shooting just a handful of videos. I loved the concept but the image quality was too bad to enjoy. Now it looks like it's getting good enough on affordable cameras to take a 2nd look.

    I don't think the reframed videos are going away, of course. But I do think 360 video is going to come into its own a bit more over the next few years. As more and more people adopt VR headsets now that the Oculus Quest 2 is out, I'm predicting a sort of renaissance in immersive video experiences. I don't think people are ever going to take to watching vlogs that way, but I do think there are specific types and genres of video that lend themselves to the format, and as the technologies and techniques evolve, I think the audiences are going to start looking for them.
    I also think, though the camera market hasn't really reflected my prediction yet, that VR 180 is going to become a popular video format because it combines the immersive feel of 360 with the convenience of being able to sit in your chair and not worry about spinning all the way around with your headset on all the time.
    For instance, it would be a pretty rare feature film I'd want to watch in 360. But there are a LOT of short films I'd love to watch in 180.

    I agree with most of the statements in the video. RUclips consumers don't hang around with 3D headsets and they rarely are engaged enough to even bother if they do. For that 2D is still suitable.
    Regarding the place of 360: I already prefer them as action cameras. Functionally they are superb in every way. But we need higher resolution as mentioned in the video. Much higher. 360 cameras will kill action cameras when they will have reached the point, when casual viewer won't be able to tell the difference based on sharpness between 2D and 360 reframed videos. 360 reframed is already great, and usable. We are not there yet, when 360 reframed could be anywhere near on par with 2D. Certainly 2D will always have the edge by nature. But the difference could be - and will be - reduced enough that it won't be disturbing. It still is.
