I have to say that you have shown me how to plaster from watching your videos to a level that is pretty much professional so buy your self a drink your worth every penny
Great video dude. Laid out the layers quite well , what yer looking for before each new trowelling begins, and why the paint roller slips. Gold dust information and takes the mystery out of the processes and steps. Cheers
Done level 3 plastering course, been plastering for 7 years though I knew everything. Sometimes had scrim tape left sticking out, and I left it like that. Telling customers when it drys put lighter onto it, and it burns off 😆. Thanks again for the tip on scrim tape.
Very good tips... Good one for you all.. Mark the back of your trowel with a marker pen then you can see your overlapping ..when you get more used to it..
Started plastering years ago with a stailess steel tyzack..loved it One for floating and a well worn one for skimming The edge was like a razor blade slice off the scrim when scrimming up Fliat and skim the old days
Very very cool tips!! The broken-in trowel info is GOLD! Unfortunately I had to learn this the hard way 2yrs ago when I started renovating my newly purchased home and took my hand to some small bits of plastering (brick wall, mind you). I guess the scientist in me told me to break in the trowel so I did. And voilà! SOOOOO much easier!!!
Man I'm really liking the frequent videos you put out. Tip #2 is a right eye opener for me as a new plasterer. Always been told to overlap my work but never considered that the overlap doesn't need to be 50% which it almost always is for me. Im on site tomorrow and ill be trying this out! Cheers fella, this is really helpful
Nice one Jeff, glad your enjoying them mate, to be fair I'm quite enjoying making them, I'll just keep trying to get them to better quality. Nice one for the support though pal. Cheers 👍
Hi Kirk, we always worked from the mixing tub (as opposed to a spot board) and used a gauger/bucket trowel to load our hand board up, each load = 3 x scoops of the trowel into the bucket. A plasterer called “johnno” from Preston gave us a plastic “horse feed scoop” (a few £s off eBay) never looked back one scoop perfect to fill hand board cut loading it by two thirds! Still need a gauger to scrape bucket. Believe me well worth a try! Great channel bud👍
Cheers martyn, I've started a little series on tips and tricks. Will be doing another episode soon. Here's the first one mate ruclips.net/video/CAAj_un4HbA/видео.html
They’re great but they can ruin your work, yesterday I was giving my work a flick over with the plazi which unknowingly had a dink in it, scratches and gouges everywhere. Luckily I had some gear left over so was able to fill them in. Sanded the plazi quickly and was fine after
@nikthegreekcypriot yes your right and it doesn't take much for them to get damaged so I've switched to a Ox suplerflex which also gives a great finish.
I’m a plumber by trade but do multi trade, I spent hours wearing in a trowel with a sharpening block for chisels. Was great till a corner got bent on the van when I shoved a sheet of 18mm ply on top 😭
Your made for it m8 doing brilliant videos, the overlapping you see it all the time on RUclips 18” trowels and overlapping half over crazy wats the point of the larger trowel, great tip on the scrim it’s unreal the simple things you never think to try, can’t wait for next one👍
Hi mate hope your well just a quick question as I've watched a few of your vids .I decided to use sbr as you rate it . Anyway I had a tiny lump in the plaster so as usual tried to remove which then ended peeling most of the wall off .nightmare the sbr basically just peeled off
Your corners are nice but a corner trowel is perfection, my corner trowel does not leave marks on either wall and defo doesn’t slow me down because more time I’m waiting for the wall to pick up, but that’s just my 2 cents
Hi kirk.great tips. It won't save as much time as you say though. Only time saved is applying the plaster. It takes the same time to mix, finish and clean up. As you can see my Missus says I'm an argumentative twat 😂😂😂. Keep up the great work 👍
Hi Kirk, A star trek fan? You definitely the Capitan of the trowel. Its good to see your subscribers number are climbing. I said in another comment that your channel is destined to be a success! I liked your PVA vs SBR video and will give it a go at some point. Your tips and tricks from your years of experience are like gold dust. You really have got something to offer everyone from the keen DIYer to the experienced trades person. Hopefully these uploads don't take up too much of your time as I can imagine you are a very busy person. I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to upload straight forward, educational and entertaining content. Also can I be the first to wish you and your family a very happy Christmas and new year. What part of the country are you from? I'm from Wolverhampton West Mids. Your accent does not sound like too far away. What's your top break in Snooker?
Hey up Wayne, I have been reading every comment and I know you have been supporting my channel since the very beginning, it's really really appreciated mate. My mums family were originally from Wolverhampton and they came up the canal on the barges in the 1920's I think. I'm in ellesmere port. Merry Christmas to you and yours mate. P.s. highest brake is 61 Oh an apparently u was named after Kirk Douglas 🤣 I've just had a boy myself, he's 3 months old now and we called him kirk aswell 😉👌
Great video. Do you use sbr most of the time? Does it dry the same time as pva Does and what ratio do you use please? How is it better than pva? Thanks mate, Gav

the secrets in the mix, they start at the bottom so it don't end up on the floor, these are not beginner's strokes, you are good, but you've been at it years.
Great vid Kirk. I can’t imagine even trying to do 100 metres a day, that’s insane. Is that two coats and 3 trowels still? Domestic wise I’m normally prep in the morning and a hit in the afternoon. Second day when set up it’s back to two mixes. I’d say I average 30 meters a day on domestics
@@Onthetrowel still a phenomenal amount mate! I reckon I could do 60 max to a good standard. Yeah domestic is a different kettle of fish. I’m a one man band so everything takes longer. I’ve actually been employed now as a multi trader, start the 4th march so guaranteed good money every month, less stress, lovely
I have seen guys with 18 or 20 inch trowels....and using a 14 inch boards / hawks...the max plaster on the trowel is the size of the hawk..and your wrist is paying the price...reduce the trowel size guys,,,and overlap like Kirk.
You’re the 1st spread on a lot videos I’ve seen to tie in the ceiling with the wall. The right way to do it. 👌 Thanks for the scrim tip, that does my mallet in, I’d usually grab a knife and cut most it off with steam coming out of my ears. 😂
Thanks for the videos mate good stuff. A quick question Is it true you shouldn’t scrim between wall and ceiling if wall is masonry and ceiling is plasterboard as the two opposing surfaces pulling against each other would cause the plaster to tear on the edge of the scrim rather than in the corner. In these cases I was told it was best to just caulk the corner without scrim. Cheers again mate and let us all know your Christian name
Hi malcolm, cheers for the nice comment mate. No I would definitely put scrim there. That's the whole point of scrim. To reinforce the weak joints between two separate backgrounds. Hope that helps mate.
I could tell you are from the Wirral (gay scouse lilt😉) I have a few comments about your tips lad! 1. It appears you don’t use a twitcher properly. When you do corners or ceiling lines you pull the finish out with one stroke and then run the trowel horizontally left to right and leave it. Close in the wall/ceiling and do the same on the other wall/ceiling. You then run your twitcher along the corner making all nice like. 😜and you never go past the line until it’s picked up (no lines now with the new corner trowels) obvs you will take lines out left to right so lay on close in then twitcher first trowel second trowel cross trowel done lad😊 0:04
2. The trowel half on method is for laying on as the finish goes on tight at the heel and thicker at the toe so it is layered to keep flat. Closing in uses much less finish and flattens and fills (only 1cm overlap there) I used to go a quarter of a trowel when laying on. You should also lay on and close in, in a letter C not straight up and down (obvs not in corners) as you take the finish with you and ensure that there is no gathering at skirting level or snots.
I used to board and float a room in sand and cement lay on and close in the ceiling/boards with twitcher and window soffs /reveals if stud wall. Lay on and close in the three Floated walls with twitcher trowel boards trowel walls
Hey mate, thanks for taking the time to write all that out, some great advice. Thanks for following my channel. Looking forward to getting your thoughts on other video's in the future
Guys am i not listening right or just being stupid. He said a broken in trowel is better than brand new , you want the trowel edge to be razor sharp. Surely a brand new trowel is sharper than a used one ? Feel free to let me know if I’m being a tool !😂
New trowels are blunt an still have a square edge, takes a couple of weeks or even months depending on how much plastering you do to break a trowel in. The more you use it the sharper it gets. The older the trowel the better it is
