    You make everything effortless - I guess that’s what years of experience gives! I’m so glad I found your channel a month or so back. Now I’ve got decent lessons in plastering, a decent Chippy - Robin Clevett, and James, the plumber., all from YT and you’re all excellent at explaining the shit parts of the job rather than glossing over it. Now all I need is an electrician. All the best Kirk and keep up the brilliant videos.

    If you fasten the screws below the surface of the existing wall. Then plaster over them as normal. Then when you're finished run a magnet over the area to find the screws and just expose them with a screwdriver. This way there are no screws to work around.

    Watched a lot of your great videos as I was wanting to have a go at plastering my garden room ...... Thanks for all the great tips, I'm never going to be a professional plasterer, just an enthusiastic diy person!
    When I use the trowel I leave lines on the toe and the heal... Drop plaster all over the shop and struggle to work quick enough to get it all on the wall before it starts going off
    I'm on my 6th wall now so getting the hang of it better than my first super stressful wall.
    A few items that you didn't mention and I haven't seen you use are an old table cloth to but under the wall that's being plastered to catch the large amount of dropped plaster and a mop and bucket to tidy up the aftermath!!!
    Also next time I attempt a ceiling I'm wearing a hat as 4 walls in my first ceiling was challenging with plaster all over me, in my hair and over my arms. The floor looked like 6am at a festival rave because of all the plaster I had stepped in on the floor!
    Anyway I'm not doing a ceiling again until I have done a lot more walls and i would wear a hat!
    Couldn't have done what I have done without your videos and superb advice though.
    Thanks 👍

      That's it Jamie, you just get a feel for it with the water, every job is different and depending how much you've got on the wall, sometimes you might find it easier with a bit of water on the 2nd and 3rd... sometimes you don't need it.
      I just go with how it feels.
      If you ever need water when you're flattening in then that's a sign that your in a but of trouble and need to speed the hell up.

    1st flatten (no water) - when it leaves imprints but doesn't stick to your fingers.
    2nd flatten (water) - when just about leaves imprints and is firmer.
    Polish (no water) - when it's firmed up.

    Hi Kirk, regarding the timing of when to put the second on. Will it make a huge difference if you left it too long before the second coat? I remember the first wall I plastered, and it took me soo long by the time I put it all on, flattened it and cleaned out my bucket that an hour and a half had already passed and it was close to two hours before I put my second coat on lol. I painted it all myself as well. Three years on and the wall is completely fine. So I was thinking what is the major issue if one were to apply their second after the recommended time you advised in the video. I’ve done this several times (leaving it way after the recommended time) until I got faster and have never had an issue. Please can you elaborate on what the negatives are when you do leave it too long before the second coat?
    Thanks
    Bee

    • @Onthetrowel
      @Onthetrowel  2 года назад +1

      Just depends, if your just starting out then probably best to mix up fresh, I personally just knock the old stuff up with a splash of water but it sets faster this way

    Subscribed! Perfect Video...could watch you plaster all day. I'm relatively new to it all but have looked up alot of video's and also laboured once before for my mate who plasters Daily so looking forward to giving my flat a go as it's stripped to a shell so perfect time to make a mess lol. Liked the tip about the bottom skirting area about it being higher suction making plaster at the brick area dry quicker so will pay attention to that in future. Had a Question...the first and second coat of plaster are these the same batch but just thinned down with more water on second coat? Or are they two completely separate batches of plaster?
    Thanks in advance mate, Aidan.

    • @Onthetrowel
      @Onthetrowel  2 года назад +2

      Aiden whilst you are learning you would be better doing a fresh mix.
      When you wet the same stuff up it sets faster so you might struggle.
      P.s. Little bonus tip for you mate. It roughly takes exactly half the amount to second coat as what it does to first coat 👍👍

    I have a qestion! why do only decorators use drop sheets to save on mess while working? In my job as a handyman, I do all sorts of work but I always get a little miffed at the mess I have to clean up from the traders who were in before me. Having watched a lot of your video's, I'll exclude you from the comment as I see you take pride in your work but a lot of traders including plasterers, elckies and plumbers leave the job half finished and a load of mess thinking the deckies will fix it. Moan over 😂🤣😅😁. Love the channel and depth of explaination. Best plastering channel on youtube.

    Nice video mate, when you were doing above the door. Would you ever get a smaller trowel and flatten sideways as well as up and down? I always seem to put too much plaster on when applying that way, and end up with more at the bottom and top than at the middle. Anyways keep the videos coming. Love how you make it sound and look so easy haha.

    • @Onthetrowel
      @Onthetrowel  2 года назад +2

      Yes, if you can get something smaller to go across the top of the door then definitely. I usually put on quite tight so don't really struggle with it but it's a very good point, I'll include it in the next skimming video.
      Appreciate the feedback mate an cheers for the nice comments 👍👍

      @@Louisthesaxman1 you only plaster corners and joints, way faster, and easier.but Depends on pov, multi finish plaster takes 2-3 days to dry plus a day to plaster a room B4 you can paint, tape and joint takes 2 days and u can paint it straight away after you sand, plasterboard is a finished surface, no need to skim, it saves loads of ££ on materials.
