Otaku Evolution Episode 258 - Akira

In the future, in the aftermath of a world war, the city of Neo Tokyo teeters on the edge of chaos and destruction, as the political situation explodes and rogue teen biker gangs take to the streets in search of fun. One such gang, led by Kaneda, combats another, leading to one of his friends, Tetsuo just narrowly avoiding crashing into a strange child. The military takes the child, and Tetsuo, into custody, to experiment on. In the process, Tetsuo begins to exhibit psychic powers, which the inferiority complex-driven teenager uses to lash out. Can Kaneda stop his friend from destroying everything? The power-hungry Tetsuo seeks the being Akira, the cause of the war, and power beyond him.
Akira is a classic Katsuhiro Otomo film based on his own manga. But is the distilled story enough to do the premise justice? I examine to find out.
