Whereas Darth Nox was a psychopathic Sith Lord who used her sexuality like a weapon, despite being surprisingly strong in the force and incredibly devious.
Dr strange was kind of a dick for half the movie they made and his doctor title was like a symbol of his growth. He lead away from his harsh critique of what he didn’t agree with and became more open minded, his character began as a diligent skeptic. And for that his name is representative of his roots and how he’s ironically not like that anymore. It still represents the shittiest parts of his character.
I'm going to add a THIRD reminder that this is a reference to the 1960 film "Little Shop of Horrors" directed by Roger Corman. Although it is more popularly known for its 1982 musical remake by Frank Oz. In both versions, the main villain Orin Scrivello is a dentist. Just so we are absolutely clear.
Exactly what I thought when he said evil dudes are Dr Whatever,,, dentist's titles are 'Dr'. When I was a young child my parents insisted on taking me to a dentist named Dr Blood !!!! Needless to say I'm now traumatised & become paralyzed by fear whenever I hear anything that sounds vaguely similar to a dentist's drill !
I mean... to be fair, when you're such a powerful sorcerer you can survive having all of your blood turned to acid, all your bones turned to ash and your skin turned to stone and being thrown literally millions of years into the past, have visited thousands of universes, have managed to build robots comparable in computational power to Ultron (Who are still *less intelligent than you* ), and decided to go back to the dawn of sorcery and then just... lived through the time to the present, constantly studying either the mystic arts or some scientific phenomena. while simultaneously being the world's only chance at actual world peace as stated by a literal omniversal cat god... does it *really* matter if you got your doctorate from a university?
DekCheMc Yup, but considering how smart he is, I guess he gets a pass. Also, I noticed how a lot of characters in Marvel that are geniuses happen to have alliteration in their names. Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, Peter Parker (his intelligence is underrated for some reason, but his IQ is 250 or higher) Doctor Doom, Stephen Strange etc.
@@stanfordfeynman2796 It's not just geniuses. Stan Lee's memory was terrible, so he alliterated a lot of names to make them easier to remember. I mean... Bruce Banner's name was originally David until Stan Lee just sort of... forgot, and they had to retcon it saying "He goes by his middle name"
This video makes me want to write a short story with a hero called Dr Malachi Von Hammerschmidt and a villain called Captain Joseph Claymore. Just to show that it can be done. But something makes me think you might be right, and that going against the grain this hard might force me to unconsciously start writing in support of the villain.
Darth Maul is not just "kind of close" to being "Mal" but a maul is also another name for a hammer, which we're already come to accept is an "evil" weapon. So in a way it's a bit of a two-fer!
Disney's Atlantis: Commander Rourke - Bad guy, Doctor Sweet - Good guy James Cameron's Avatar: Colonel Quaritch - Bad guy, Doctor Augustine - Good guy Doctor Who: The Doctor BBCs Sherlock: Army Doctor John Watson - main protagonist Doctor Strange....Doctor Strange I could probably go on for a while. Doctors aren't always baddies and the military isn't a haven of goodness.
I tend to either name my hero after my self or use fives (the name i plan on using if a second kid with the same name as me starts going to my school (it is a small school)).
*Says doctors are evil characters and military are good* "Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who" *Doesn't mention the Doctor when telling of good doctors*
+Tenebris Signum OK! I spotted that too... But in Crack'd's Defence... While the Doctor has got a Doctorate (We don't know what it is but he has one...) - He does not actually have the Formal Title of "Doctor"... Quite early on and often repeated since the reboot - It is a Title he chose himself and not based on any form of education... In the same way The MASTER is not actually a Master of Anything... Its a Title he chose for himself... (Or now, Herself...)... Aha! Yup! I knew it was discussed in the Reboot.... David Tennat Era!!! The "Prime Minister Saxon" story... Saxon (The Master) asks Tennat to call him by his name... Its at this point they both reveal that they were names they CHOSE for themselves - They are not their actual Titles in anyway but Names they have adopted.
+Warren “Phoenix” Marris Actually the Doctor has admitted to having multiple doctorates, non of which actually qualify him to be a medical doctor though. Also since you mentioned the Master and "herself" she is not called the Master anymore. Her name is the Mistress or Missy for short because she felt she couldn't keep calling herself Master after regenerating into a woman. It should also be noted that it has been said at one point that we actually got the name for healer from The Doctor, so he didn't choose name because of what it meant, it's meaning didn't come into existence until after he chose it.
kinda surprised Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians wasn't mentioned in either the video or the comments (the ones I've read that is) since her name consists literally of the words cruel and devil
jedisalamander gaming while I understand the whole Jesus subplot and it makes sense. Like you said Commander Shepard was named after an astronaut with the names John and Jane are names they give to unidentified people.
So glad you asked. Ahem. "Mercy is the mark of a great man. {stabs him a little}. Guess I’m just a good one. {stabs him a little more}. Well I’m all right." :D
Mal can also mean "sick" in latin, which could refer to post-traumatic stress disorder from his time with the independents - or just a rotten personality. Damn, I hate it got cancelled.
+Nicholas Epsilon And where was Dr. Strange, I ask? And the Eye of Agamotto? He ultimately became the Sorcerer Supreme, for chrissakes. He must be honored. But I did like this.
Does that mean Mal from Firefly is a bad guy? But he's also a Captain, so good guy. Ah, I see what you did there Joss. The roguish starship captain with the heart of gold who's always looking out for a easy payload.
+gethsoftware And the name was decided way before the devs knew they would kill Shepard, then ressurect him, and then make him save the galaxy by "dying" again. (By the way, "dying" in red, blue or green. Get it, get it?)
+gethsoftware Says who? The developers, after hearing the Good Shepherd analogy, trying to cover themselves from being too cliche? +Gaius Baltar That may all be true, but very few heroic characters don't sacrifice something in their run. They made a heroic character, even if they didn't know about his Jesus-esque resurrection, they knew he would sacrifice something. Do something heroic. And I'm sure if you go down the hero list of JCs and Shepards, you'll find many among them didn't make a life sacrifice, but did make SOME sacrifice. It's in the very nature of the modern hero.
S Yeah but it was a bigger deal because he was literally like "any time you see a fictional character with *doctor* in their name, they're gonna be evil", and in literally the next sentence he mentions a character from *Doctor Who*, a show whose titular character is "The Doctor," the definitive article you might say.
yeah, "Doctor" and "Doc" don't count, because they don't abbreviate. Dr. Who or Dr. Brown? looks evil. oh! it's Doctor Who and Doc Brown. that's better.
I don't recall him doing anything that could plainly be evil. He only stole from people who could afford to be stolen from, and looked out for his crew even when it was hard to.
There are some exceptions. Dr. Manhattan is a hero (even though a rather questionable one - then again, he still drives the 'technology is evil' message), while Thor uses a hammer (or a MAL-let) as a weapon (Then again, Thor is based on super-old mythology and would probably get a sword if they were to re-write him). By the way, "Captain" Jack Sparrow, anyone..?
***** The protagonist of the game Fable 2 who was a hero by birthright was named Sparrow at the start of the game (with nicknames you could latterly change this)
I'm not sure who Dr. Manhattan is but I'm sure even if he is a good guy he has done some questionable stuff like Dr Bruce Banner did as Hulk. Anyway Thor was a total dick like Victor Van Doom Jr. said, until he was banished to earth where he couldn't lift his hammer until he learned not to be a dick. On Captain Jack Sparrows case he was never really the villain, but cracked is talking about captain as military captains not captains of a ship when someone is captain of a ship the rule doesn't apply this is shown with Captain Hook, the main bad guy in peter pan, and I'm sure their are more i'm not thinking of.
Andrew Phillips Wasnt it Fox that pulled the plug because the ratings were low? Firefly only became a hit like five years after it was aired. Whedon has repeatedly said that he wants to continue the series but cant because of his schedule with Marvel and Fox owning the rights to Firefly
Really? With a Star Wars "Mal" name you went with "Maul" instead of "Malak"? I mean it's literally 3/5 of the guy's name. The dude literally (spoiler) bombed an entire planet trying to kill one enemy.
There's also Dr. Nemesis; I'm a bit fuzzy on his full backstory, but he was a science whiz for the X-Men for a while. There's also Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen. On a similar note? Nobility. Bad guys are usually dukes or counts. Good guys tend to be princes, if they're nobility at all. Empires are nearly always evil, while kingdoms are good.
Darth Maul? I'll see your, "Mauling, like what bears do," and raise you one maul, a heavy hammer or club. How did you guys miss that? I know, because you came at him from the the "mal" angle rather than the "hammer" side. Interesting, how the brain works, is it not?
+Gene Rybarczyk Thought the exact same. I never leaped to Maul being named "almost Mal", I could only think of the heavy hammer contraption. Which is weird since he has that kung fu/twin blade light saber which barely resemble an actual maul but I'll let that slide.
+Ethan Stadel - Thanks for the interesting comment. ~ An incisive translation, though one I am unable to find any evidence to support. In German (auf Deutsch), Vater means "father," as I learned in high school, way too many years ago. And I can't find any translation for dahr or darh from German (with the assistance of Google Translate), though darh is translated as "one and a half" in Hindi. "Faded" in German (auf Deutsch) is verblichen or verblüht, nor could I find anything even remotely close for fade, shadow, dark or shade. ~ And so, kind sir, I must beg to differ, though I would be glad to be schooled further.
Peter Parker (Spider Man), John Jones (Martian Manhunter), Bruce Banner (Hulk),Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Scott Summers,(Cyclops) Wally West, (Flash) Stephan Strange,(*Dr* Strange; yeah, that one's in there for YOU, Danny old pal) Richard Ryder (Nova), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) and of course, the iconic Clark Kent... Yeah, I'm just being a bit of a know it all d*ck and pointing out that *you missed a whole section* on this video of the fact that an absurd amount of heroic characters have alliterative names, too. You're very welcome, dude.
That doesn't really assign any ATTRIBUTE to them, does it? Not like JC or Shepard. It just shit comic book Authors picked up, and rolled with. It doesn't pop-up that much anywhere else. I blame Stan Lee.
Helltamirre Not sure, mire. Maybe there's some kind of subconscious desire to reinforce the positive aspects by making the name sound lyrically pleasing in some way. Still an interesting name trope
Shenruss It does make them easier to remember. Alliteration is popular mnemonic device. I remember most names you listed and I never read comics and didn't watch most of the recent torrent of comic book movies.
..Completely ignoring good guys who are doctors, like Doc Savage, Doctor Who, Doctor Strange, Doc Samson, etc... Also I can't help but notice they didn't catch on to the fact that a maul is a type of hammer. Get a thesaurus, Cracked.
+Owen Oulton Bruce Banner also introduces himself as Dr. Bruce Banner. That of course is because he wants to remind people that he's a doctor and not just a rage monster. But still, he's a doctor and calls himself a doctor and he's a good guy.
Thor is a kind of exception as he's based on the Norse god so had to have a hammer. As for the doctor; comic book villains are PhDs - scientists. The doctor has that title because he 'heals' the universe, his name is supposed to make you think of a medical doctor curing the sick, not a scientist in the lab.
I see you there, Doctor Logic, hidden behind the guise of this RUclips commenter! Curses, my plan for an entertaining yet uninformed comment have been spoiled again!
Well, if you're still looking for a bit of lampooning fun, you could make the argument that while not _evil_, both Thor and The Doctor have several attributes/misdeeds that blemish their otherwise noble character. Thor is the God of Thunder, but he's also a proud berserker fighter in the Norse legends, meaning he gets into a crazy unrepentant nigh unstoppable rage murder bloodlust in the heat of intense battle. Hardly the attributes of a good person. In fact, even in the MCU Thor has a knack for giving in to his pride and temper, a trait he even _lost_ his hammer over. After h's banishment, he's sorta better, but in Avengers, he's still a hothead, content to rip his kid bro out of government custody without hearing the charges and instigate fights with people in parks, and in AoU, when Tony made Ultron, Thor literally lifted Tony, the oldest, most vulnerable/mortal Avenger (outside his suit) by the neck and bitched him out for his stupidity over using the Tesseract. Also, he comes across as very proud and holier-than-thou, though that could just be because he's the spoiled crown prince to an alien kingdom nicknamed "The Realm Eternal." The ego on this guy makes sense, at least. The Doctor is responsible for the genocide of his entire race in the Time War, and pays "penance" by meddling in the affairs of human history. Through his meddling, he's brought ridiculous consequences with his abuse of time travel, and even enlists human companions despite the fact that he's ruining their time stream with his double dipping. Honestly, I don't know if he's just naive or willfully ignorant. Either way, I sincerely doubt his altruism. I mean, his TARDIS must be stolen, for crying out loud! He certainly didn't build a dimension traveling spaceship with a freaking screwdriver, and who in their right minds after the Time War would entrust him with the means to evade capture for his crimes? He's a fugitive. Repentant, perhaps, but still a fugitive. As for the Doctor title, I'm pretty sure he (11th) told Clara about some promise he made someone about never giving up or something. Like I said, paying penance for crimes, e.g. a doctor who violated his Hippocratic Oath.
That's a little scary. I'm in the middle of writing a book and one of the main characters' initials are J.C. and I plan on him sacrificing himself. The sub-conscience works in mysterious ways....
That first one is very old...John Carter from the "Mars" books, for example. Marvel Hero "Doctor Strange", while he has a PHD, he doesn't do surgery anymore because his hands are messed up. "Maul" is actually the name of a medieval weapon (a great big hammer)
"Maul" generally refers to a large hammer used as a tool or weapon in modern times as well as medieval. I can't believe he brought up "Darth Maul" after saying hammers are evil and didn't make that connection.
animefn . Of course he didn't bring up Thor, since Thor is a hero and refutes the thesis that hammers are evil. OTOH, Darth Maul is a villain and named for a hammer and therefore supports the thesis.
NarfBLAST The main point of the video was naming of characters, but he also states that pop culture has decided that "hammers are villainous dickheads," which is a principle incompatible with Thor being a hero. Of course the idea that Thor wields a hammer is much older than the idea that hammers are evil.
TheNeonugget don't get me wrong I see where you're coming from but the point I'm trying to make is that just because someone breaks the laws set by an evil repressive government does not necessarily make them evil
I know you're from the Renaissance, but that guy was named Alan Shepard. He was the first American in space. America refers to the United States of America which is a country in the "New World". Fuck, talking to you is harder that is seems. You've missed out on a lot since 1524.
Shepard died in Mass Effect 3. He got resurrected in Mass Effect 2. He got resurrected after chocking in space. He didn't get resurrected after giving his life for humanity. Great research Cracked
Dear Sir in the video, You are very goood in your delivery on this subject which then makes me think you're good at delivering, "it", in every other video. What you shouldn't show is you begging for people to subscribe. It takes away from your intensity as a good actor. I believe you are good enough as an actor or entertainer, that you need not to beg for attention. It will come to you because you deserve it by the hard work you put in to it. End the begging! You're to far above that now. Good luck in following your dreams.
Skuld Urdr Mind your business....unless your the person from the video....then I would fell sad for you. If you're not the person in the video, then,.... piss off! Wasn't talking to you, and I'm sure, I do not care what you think I may need or not need, to do! Zip it. Go "skuld" soneone else!
DuckieThirteen That's part of the joke dude, it's like the end of College Humor's videos. Do you post comments on all of College Humor's videos telling them not to tell people to subscribe?
How do you not realize that Cracked is a company, not an individual? And you can "believe" that view traffic will magically appear all you want, but it's not true. Marketing is essential on RUclips, deal with it.
I've never done that with my characters and have never noticed this in other characters, like John Connor for instance. I'm a Christian and I LOVE the Terminator series and never got that. this was all very entertaining 😊
Mal is an anti-hero. I think it's quite likely the writers consciously used both heroic and villainous identifiers to express his moral ambiguity. River specifically mentions that "mal" means "bad" in Latin so they were certainly quite aware of that.
I know he's an anti-hero. I was trying to make fun of the rules, so they wouldn't be so boringly black and white. Of course I did a very bad job. I promise I'll stop commenting my stupid thoughts. :) Starting now.
Jonathan Rogers Soon as he starts talking about "Mal", I was expecting him to quote River. Of course, Firefly isn't a story about good vs evil, it's about lawful vs chaotic; the crew of Serenity are all on the chaotic side (except Simon, who's LG but being dragged chaotic through the series), but they span the whole range of good and evil. Jayne? Chaotic evil, no question about it. Mal? Chaotic Good but pretends to be Chaotic Neutral, loudly and as often as possible. Inara and Kaylee are CG, too. River's straight-up CN, complete with the insanity. Book is CN, claiming to be CG.
Chris Angelico I can see you're a big D&D fan. In real life as well as the world of the show, I don't think things break down into such convenient categories. Even D&D doesn't seem to have maintained a very clear idea of what Law, Neutrality, Chaos, Good and Evil are and how they relate to each other throughout its history. Another way to describe Mal is that he's fiercely loyal to and protective of the people nearest him and doesn't care as much for those farther away. This is perfectly normal human behavior and is why we have families, tribes and nations. You also can't claim he is against all authority since he was part of the of Browncoats.
Here's a villainous name for you, 'Voldemort' - 'volde' from old Scandinavian roots meaning 'violence' and 'mort' from French meaning 'death'. On the opposing side you have Harry Potter. A short form of Harold; who was considered the last just king of England by many. And Potter; someone who takes earth and forms it (through harsh fire) into something useful, beautiful or both. Subtle Ms. Rowling, very subtle.
Perhaps it's worth noting that heroic doctors like Marvel's Dr. Strange and DC's Dr, Fate are associated with magic and mysticism, rather than science or medicine.
Minjun Kim is also pretty near to the evil stuff,I mean he once sold his soul to kill someone who was just protecting his own planet filled with innocent beings.
Also of more note than the tiny mention at the end is the reason swords are portrayed as the weapon of good guys is because of the cross shape the hilt forms.
He is, but remember he's also not a fully hero: he's a pirate/bandit/smuggler anti-hero who slowly is brought back to the side of good because of influence from the crewmember he picks up who happens to be named Sheppard.
Morec0 Who also sacrifices himself for other's and inspires Mal to be a Hero. Then again Mal was heroic, he was a browncoat, a noble volunteer solider that fought for freedom and his ideals.
Cruella De Vil is the least subtle villain name.
then we get Dragon Ball who has a ''hero'' named Satan.
+Legendary Detective Wobbaffet hail mr satan, savior of the earth, 3 times now

to bad. you're gonna have to give up your life to become John Cena
I shall now have my name legally changed to Captain John C Shepherd-Christ.
And then earn the rank of Captain so you can be Captain Captain?
That’s still basically John Cena 😂
So by this logic, Captain Mal Reynolds is both heroic and nefarious... seems quite accurate actually.
Works even better. His given name is Malcolm, but he goes by just Mal. He's also deeply a good guy who presents himself as a troublemaker.

I thought 'maul' was something a rabid animal does to someone
Michael Price 'Maul' comes from 'Mal', which that word means Evil, and Darth Maul is evil, sooooo
There's mauls and mauling A maul is a big ass fucking hammer and mauling is when an animal veraciously attacks you with its claws.
It works on a few levels.
Darth Maul is not just "kind of close" to being "Mal" but a maul is also another name for a hammer, which we're already come to accept is an "evil" weapon. So in a way it's a bit of a two-fer!
Michael Hicks Its a three-fer! Mal (French for sick), Maul, (to tear apart), Maul, (like a sledge hammer)
Oh-ho! Nicely put!
***** mal is french for bad
Dusty McTits which is even worse! cause that means that the moment they become evil they get a name that is obviously evil!
***** But is "Malak" just the same as any other "Mal" or is there another meaning? I always assumed "Revan" was short for Revenent.
Disney's Atlantis: Commander Rourke - Bad guy, Doctor Sweet - Good guy
James Cameron's Avatar: Colonel Quaritch - Bad guy, Doctor Augustine - Good guy
Doctor Who: The Doctor
BBCs Sherlock: Army Doctor John Watson - main protagonist
Doctor Strange....Doctor Strange
I could probably go on for a while. Doctors aren't always baddies and the military isn't a haven of goodness.
he was saying captains were almost always the good guys
Nick Cameron
I didn't mention Captains...?
+Nojuan Especial
no you mentioned general military people, who are more akin to the dr title then the captain one
Nick Cameron
Commander Rourke is more like a doctor than a captain? Colonel Quaritch? _REALLY_?
Yes, just like how Admirals in Star Trek were nearly always bad guys.
All of my passwords are the names of various "Friends" characters. Except for Ross. I've never used Ross. Not after what he did to Rachel.
they were on a break
thick MclargeHuge
no no no.
THEY WERE ON A BREAK!!!!
And... he was a Dr. ...Coincidence?
Obligatory, "God damnit, Ross..."
I tend to either name my hero after my self or use fives (the name i plan on using if a second kid with the same name as me starts going to my school (it is a small school)).
*Says doctors are evil characters and military are good*
"Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who"
*Doesn't mention the Doctor when telling of good doctors*
RialVestro Realise all those points... :) And again it always beings me back to my Theory regarding "Ashiler" in the Series Finale...
***** This was highlighted back in the David Tenant Era... The Worlds End story arc...
***** The Master has regenerated to a Female so is now The Mistress... :)
Fun Fact: Draco Malfoy's name translates to bad little dragon.
Your welcome
But Bad Dragons™ are famously large, though.
kinda surprised Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians wasn't mentioned in either the video or the comments (the ones I've read that is) since her name consists literally of the words cruel and devil
She's also called Devil
Baldwhite mcwhitewhite? I know what to name my kids now
Corbin Cavitt ( calls cps )
Commander Shepard was named after a real life astronaut
jedisalamander gaming while I understand the whole Jesus subplot and it makes sense. Like you said Commander Shepard was named after an astronaut with the names John and Jane are names they give to unidentified people.
Holy crap. In the show Lucifer, the bad guys name is Malcolm.
Did... Did he say "Doctor whom"?
+David McClune I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught that! I thought I was going nuts or something.
+SANS The Skelebro oh thank god me too!!
Doctor Whom’s’tve’ed’ing’
but what about captain mal from firefly
So glad you asked. Ahem.
"Mercy is the mark of a great man. {stabs him a little}. Guess I’m just a good one. {stabs him a little more}. Well I’m all right."
:D
I'm pretty sure River also points out that his name is bad...
"Mal, bad... in the Latin" XD
Maybe they were gonna do something with that but then it got cancelled
Mal can also mean "sick" in latin, which could refer to post-traumatic stress disorder from his time with the independents - or just a rotten personality. Damn, I hate it got cancelled.
was waiting for him to say, "Dr. Evil"
Nicholas Epsilon it never came
***** and still waiting :(
Nicholas Epsilon that and it sounds like he says Dr. Whom instead of Dr. Who.
+Nicholas Epsilon And where was Dr. Strange, I ask? And the Eye of Agamotto? He ultimately became the Sorcerer Supreme, for chrissakes. He must be honored.
But I did like this.
+Nicholas Epsilon same here
Does that mean Mal from Firefly is a bad guy? But he's also a Captain, so good guy. Ah, I see what you did there Joss. The roguish starship captain with the heart of gold who's always looking out for a easy payload.
Diane Underhill considering the brown coats are basically a scifi version of the south from the 1860's...
No, they were fighting against being annexed, not secessionists.
jackie chan... lol
There is at least one doctor who is not a villain. He's not just any doctor. He's The Doctor!
Also Doc Brown, no one should forget Doc Brown.
Gina Wiebe also Doctor Strange, Doctor Zhivago, Doctor Dolittle...
Dr. Seuss. Lol!
Not a fictional character, but okay.
Gina Wiebe doc martin. only doctor with a fear of blood! XD
Um, actually Commander Shepard is named after Alan Shepard, the first american Astronaut in space.
+gethsoftware Right? Major facepalm right off the bat.
+Sugarwolf I'm not sure that's a great idea to name your protagonist "Major Facepalm".
but Alan Shepherd was chosen for this very same reason!
6:22 As an added bonus, a maul is a type of hammer lol
Did you seriously just say that everyone with "Doctor" in their name is evil, and then in the next breath mention a Doctor Who character?
and there is Dr. Manhattan
+MasterFhyl Doctor Strange is also a protagonist.
S Yeah but it was a bigger deal because he was literally like "any time you see a fictional character with *doctor* in their name, they're gonna be evil", and in literally the next sentence he mentions a character from *Doctor Who*, a show whose titular character is "The Doctor," the definitive article you might say.
+MasterFhyl I concur.
yeah, "Doctor" and "Doc" don't count, because they don't abbreviate. Dr. Who or Dr. Brown? looks evil. oh! it's Doctor Who and Doc Brown. that's better.
The villain of Princess and the Frog is called doctor because he's a witch-doctor.
I am your father
What about Dr. Strange??
What if there's a guy called Captain Malcolm? How am I to know if he's good or evil?
+Resetti's Robot Wars Replicas That was the point of his character, as I recall. He toed the line between good and evil
I don't recall him doing anything that could plainly be evil. He only stole from people who could afford to be stolen from, and looked out for his crew even when it was hard to.
I want to fall asleep on Daniel's chest.
Mad Monkee I will fight you! Fight you!
I spaced out so many times with this video.
Pirates of the Caribbean never existed, its was all just a terrible dream.
***** The protagonist of the game Fable 2 who was a hero by birthright was named Sparrow at the start of the game (with nicknames you could latterly change this)
I don't think The Watchman was trying to say that technology was evil, just progress. Actually, I don't there were any truly evil characters.
***** Also, his alter ego was called Dr. Donald Blake
Wait, what about Mal from Firefly? He was a good guy.
probably wasnt going to be for long..
hmmm, stupid fox for cancelling it
Azivegu Nope it was Joss Whedon
He was given a choice, Firefly or a second season of Dollhouse
He choice poorly
Andrew Phillips Wasnt it Fox that pulled the plug because the ratings were low? Firefly only became a hit like five years after it was aired. Whedon has repeatedly said that he wants to continue the series but cant because of his schedule with Marvel and Fox owning the rights to Firefly
nope, even though it was shown out of order, jumping timeslots etc it came down to Joss
Honest!
Really? With a Star Wars "Mal" name you went with "Maul" instead of "Malak"? I mean it's literally 3/5 of the guy's name. The dude literally (spoiler) bombed an entire planet trying to kill one enemy.
Lol you forgot dr strange who actually fucking throws his doctorness in everyone's face
He is Doctor Strange, bitches better recognise!
He said Hugo Strange, is that not Dr. Strange?
AmyD
Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange, PhD. Neurosurgeon, Master of the Mystic Arts and Sorcerer Supreme!
There is always exceptions to the rule.
+KarstenOkk That'd be awesome if he had a maul shapped lightsaber. A lightmaul? Crushing his ennemies under lasers.
+Gene Rybarczyk Darh means dark in german and vater meens fader so darh vater meens dark fader
+Ethan Stadel - Thanks for the interesting comment.
~
An incisive translation, though one I am unable to find any evidence to support.
~
And so, kind sir, I must beg to differ, though I would be glad to be schooled further.
+KarstenOkk maybe him being used LIKE a maul? By the emperor? He was pretty blunt/lacking subtlety.
"More recently, the Malfoys from Harry Potter, who are, we're all adults here, fucking wizard nazis, wizard fucking nazis"
Omg I can't
Isn't the villain from "The Princess and the Frog" called a Doctor because he is a "Witch Doctor"?
+El Rocky Raccoon and he had doctorates in hoodoo and voodoo.
GarBear7G And he's got a bachelors in thing's he's never tried!
Yes.
Morec0 and a GED for friends on the other side
Funniest comment chain ever XD
So that's why Malcolm McDowell plays villains.
Best fictional villain name ever: Casanova Frankenstein, from Mystery Men.
you had a Dr. evil joke that you didn't used
Ikr, I was expecting him to mention that in the bit about 'mal'
Shenruss Yeah, I was expecting that to be in the video, but I guess not.
Helltamirre ...and people want their heroes memorable. So you see my point then?
The antagonist of Inception was named Mal
..Completely ignoring good guys who are doctors, like Doc Savage, Doctor Who, Doctor Strange, Doc Samson, etc... Also I can't help but notice they didn't catch on to the fact that a maul is a type of hammer. Get a thesaurus, Cracked.
You forgot Dr. Who and Dr. Strange.
+Owen Oulton Bruce Banner also introduces himself as Dr. Bruce Banner. That of course is because he wants to remind people that he's a doctor and not just a rage monster. But still, he's a doctor and calls himself a doctor and he's a good guy.
+Owen Oulton Also Dr. Fate.
+Jason Heavensrun You took the name right out of my mouth.
Sweetie, it's just The Doctor.
On the bright side of the whole doctor thing, Doctor Strange both has a doctorate and uses "doctor" in his title.
+Isabelle Pinkamena And when Hank Pym decided that a costume wasn't he thing for him, he started calling himself Doctor Pym.
It's still Strange's legitimate title and name.
When he brought up the antagonists named Shephard, I instantly thought of General Shephard from MW2
But, but, what about Thor and his Hammer?
+Évelyne Lachance And in the last point, what about The Doctor??? :P
+PhoenixLegionaire He does have a physical PhD.
so is john cena jesus ?
+the haunting stares of iraqi children LOL! He likes to think he is!
+the haunting stares of iraqi children yes
+the haunting stares of iraqi children
God, I hope not...
definetly
lulz i tought that to
The first rule: did anyone else think of Jesus from the Walking Dead? 😂
That's a little scary. I'm in the middle of writing a book and one of the main characters' initials are J.C. and I plan on him sacrificing himself. The sub-conscience works in mysterious ways....
Nice fuckin spoiler on yourself bro haha
Rafe Vacca Well now if you want that "Spoiler" to work, you'll have to read every single book until you find the one s/he wrote.
Best of luck with your book mate, from one writer to another.
Jonathan Rogers I can't believe he brought up the hammer thing without mentioning Thor at all.
animefn . Of course he didn't bring up Thor, since Thor is a hero and refutes the thesis that hammers are evil. OTOH, Darth Maul is a villain and named for a hammer and therefore supports the thesis.
Jonathan Rogers Thor uses a hammer, he doesn't have hammer in his name.
NarfBLAST The main point of the video was naming of characters, but he also states that pop culture has decided that "hammers are villainous dickheads," which is a principle incompatible with Thor being a hero. Of course the idea that Thor wields a hammer is much older than the idea that hammers are evil.
Derek Shepard from Grey's Anatomy sacrifices himself to save a bunch of people.
One of the greatest heroes in TV name is Doctor
Who???
LOL
Izeqa ah I see what you did there
william gaunce You mean the guy who was branded "the destroyer of worlds"?
The Sqoou Batman isn't exactly a saint
what about Firefly if I'm not mistaken the hero was named Mal
To be fair, he is a criminal.
TheNeonugget does not matter he's still the hero he is no more the villain than Robin Hood
Malcolm Houston
Never claimed he wasn't.
TheNeonugget don't get me wrong I see where you're coming from but the point I'm trying to make is that just because someone breaks the laws set by an evil repressive government does not necessarily make them evil
Malcolm Houston
Never claimed that either.
Oh wait... I thought Commander Sheppard was named after Alan Shepard
I'm now worried James Cameron is gonna pull some kind of rebirth stunt...
Shepard was named after a real guy who was involved with space, last name being Shepard. It wasn't to relate to the "holy shepherd."
I know you're from the Renaissance, but that guy was named Alan Shepard. He was the first American in space. America refers to the United States of America which is a country in the "New World".
Fuck, talking to you is harder that is seems. You've missed out on a lot since 1524.
I'll disregard that insult.
***** What insult? Are you really not Ezio Auditore? I'm really Joey Gladstone.
"Fuck, talking to you is harder that is seems."
***** Yeah because you've missed out on so much since 1524 that I have to explain a lot of stuff.
I'm loving the naming information but the Hammer dance is what got u my like 😂🤣😂
Dr Strange you goober
Shepard died in Mass Effect 3.
He got resurrected in Mass Effect 2.
He got resurrected after chocking in space.
He didn't get resurrected after giving his life for humanity.
Great research Cracked
Mass Effect 4: surprise, I'm back.
Joshua Figueroa
Bioware is dead to me he will never be back.
To be fair, Jesus died twice too...
I guess you didn't pick the Destroy ending with 4000+ EMS in ME3...
Don't you mean *she*? ;-)
Is Mal Levolent Darkness a good villain name?? I put a pun in there :D
Santenoturtle its actually pretty good
Yay!
We could make like an rpg that's so bad its good.
Aaron altringer I was thinking a 2D platformer and I'd give him horribly unfair attacks
Santenoturtle ya and when you think you've beat the villian the game is like i have 9000000 more forms
A maul is a style of hammer, going back to the hammers are evil rule.
Dear Sir in the video,
You are very goood in your delivery on this subject which then makes me think you're good at delivering, "it", in every other video.
DuckieThirteen grow up
dude, the end part is comedy. Its at the end of all of the videos. Also, this is RUclips, sometimes you gotta beg to be noticed amongst the crap.
DuckieThirteen
That's part of the joke dude, it's like the end of College Humor's videos. Do you post comments on all of College Humor's videos telling them not to tell people to subscribe?
How do you not realize that Cracked is a company, not an individual? And you can "believe" that view traffic will magically appear all you want, but it's not true. Marketing is essential on RUclips, deal with it.
2:00 actuly I think it would be like an actual Shepard, leading people to doing bad stuff, masterminding somethig, etc..
I now know what to call my very evil character in my swtor play-trough.
Mark HamMalek, PhD?
CraigMetalHead
that is Dr. Mark HamMalek
Darth Revan = DR = Dr = Doctor. Shit...
I've never done that with my characters and have never noticed this in other characters, like John Connor for instance. I'm a Christian and I LOVE the Terminator series and never got that. this was all very entertaining 😊
I didn't realize it either...does that make us terrible people?
+Legendary Detective Wobbaffet only if you're Christian
This was so fuckin funny I almost spit coffee all over my keyboard several times,...thanks.
I'm a Dr. I only did my PhD so I could be a super villain.
Neeeeerd-omg did i just bully myself? lol
Daniel dancing like MC Hammer, cutest thing ever
What about Dr Strange or Dr Fate? And Thor uses a hammer.
Fix it Felix from Wreck it Ralph also uses a hammer.
& Doc Samson from Marvel is also a hero.
Best villain name - Cruella Deville
redmarvel I'm sorry but you're wrong... "Dr. Evil"
redmarvel Though Fix it Felix is kind of a competitor of the protagonist for most of the movie..
LowestoftheDead But isn't he supposed to be based loosely off of Jump Man? Who also uses a hammer, btw
redmarvel
Well... Doc Samson is both a hero and a villain... Sometimes he makes bad decisions that aren't very... good.
How about Captain Malcom Reynolds? He's what, a balance hero, he's evil and good?
Mal is an anti-hero. I think it's quite likely the writers consciously used both heroic and villainous identifiers to express his moral ambiguity. River specifically mentions that "mal" means "bad" in Latin so they were certainly quite aware of that.
I know he's an anti-hero. I was trying to make fun of the rules, so they wouldn't be so boringly black and white. Of course I did a very bad job. I promise I'll stop commenting my stupid thoughts. :)
Starting now.
But Jayne Cobb is JC, isn't it because of the whole Jaynestown storyline? I think it is :)
Most obvious "Mal"... "Mal" from Inception!
What about Dr. Strange?
Dr Strange started out as a douche and if I'm not mistaken no longer practices medicine after his accident.
Perhaps it's worth noting that heroic doctors like Marvel's Dr. Strange and DC's Dr, Fate are associated with magic and mysticism, rather than science or medicine.
Or the Doctor (Who)?
Or Doc Savage?
or every Heroic doctor on every TV show ever?
SaiyanHeretic Dr. Strange was a neurosurgeon before he became the Sorcerer Supreme.
plucas1 The BBC don't cares about rules. They're the friggin' BBC!
I rarely lol at these, but "Get over it, you're dead" really did it for me!
The real "JC" ? Try "Jimmy Carter"
They called Bruce Banner (Incredible Hulk) most often by his title Dr. Banner or Dr. Bruce Banner.
+Jena Minton well to be fair he is the one that could easily loose his shit and destroy a whole city
Minjun Kim is also pretty near to the evil stuff,I mean he once sold his soul to kill someone who was just protecting his own planet filled with innocent beings.
+Jena Minton The Hulk/Bruce Banner is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde only is this one the Doctor is the good guy .... or is he????
Also of more note than the tiny mention at the end is the reason swords are portrayed as the weapon of good guys is because of the cross shape the hilt forms.
2:52 John Cena? Joanna Ceddia?
1 it's doctor who
And what about the doctor from doctor who
Who?
Doctor who google it
Dolton Fell
What? I asked you, I obviously don't know so don't ask me.
wtf i asked you nothing
Dolton Fell
You're not very perceptive are you ?
The awkward moment when I remember that my nerdy, pure adorable OC is named Malcolm
And he is really afraid of bears too!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Whom"
"from Doctor Whom"
"Doctor Whom"
"WHOM"
So I guess Malcolm Reynolds doesn't real?
no he doesn't real, not at all
Flintstone vitamins
