- Emilia Pérez is a new film from Netflix that is garnering serious awards consideration... and a fair share of backlash. Claimed as not just one of the worst films of the year, but one of the worst films ever made, I decide to check it out for myself. Does the film really stick the landing? Or does it fail? Is it truly a terrible movie? Or is there something good to be found here?

I saw this movie in a sneak preview with some friends and we left the theater with varying levels of shock lmao. While the beginning act almost seems like a fever dream, the rest suddenly tries to be more on par with its subject matter tonewise and it all ends in a film that shouldve been edited down at least half an hour and didnt feel congruent in the slightest. It makes a lot of sense to me that the director apparently doesnt show interest in musical theatre since nothing about the movie screamed incompetence more than the weird placement and quality of the musical numbers. Thank you for your well crafted review!!
Agreed. Nothing is worse than a musical that is terrible at being just that. Thanks for watching!
After this, I’m starting to think Madame Web has a chance of winning an Oscar
@@allanfranklins Normally I would laugh, but after this entire situation, it seems like anything’s possible at this point lol
The amount of nominations this film has garnered should hopefully point out just how pointless, venal and mercenary the Academy Awards and those of its ilk truly are. It is high time that audiences and film critics alike started turning our backs on them.
The movie is beyond bad in my opinion, but the worst thing is Hollywood "high-level" personalities are saying it's amazing, hell even James Cameron said it. I can't believe how fake and manufactured the space feels.
I don't think they are fake. They are just out of touch.
James Cameron is an equivalent of Mcdonald. He makes technology impressive movies that sell
18% in Rotten Tomatoes!! 😂😂
Really good video, my dude. Concise & convincing 👌
Thank you so much!
I’ve only seen bad reviews about this movie. Now it keeps popping up articles about how the actress Karla is receiving hate from the Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, her team and Brazilians in general (I think it’s probably a lie to mask the real criticism they’re receiving), but she’s not talking about how all the Mexicans felt offended with this movie.
This film seems so painful to watch I’m actually looking forward to!!!
If there are two films from 2024 that left me with a "wtf did I just watch" feeling, it was Emilia Pérez and The Substance. One of them was the best film of the year.
Imagine a terrible movie musical made by Russians, with French and German actors speaking bad English, filmed in China, about US American school shooters being redeemed.
That's what this movie feels like for Latin Americans.
No, but in all seriousness, the way Mexico is represented is just appalling. I'm sure they didn't intend it, but it seems purposeful how terrible it is. It's just insulting. The disconnect between the film makers and the award giving people, on one hand, and the actual people of Mexico and all of Latin America, on the other hand, is so stark, I just have to believe it's willful ignorance.
Also, thank you for pointing out it's also just bad. It would be harder to hate on this movie's bad Mexican and trans representation if it wasn't such an incompetent movie in general. The plot, broadly, would actually be really interesting if made correctly. It's compelling.
But it's so poorly written and put together, and so incompetently directed and edited. The music was so surprisingly poorly mixed, why did they voices sound so separate from the music? Why was the instrumental so sparse?
Also, I don't know any of these characters Only Zoe Saldaña's interiority is sort of explored. Everyone else you never really get to understand their motivations or internal thought processes at all. So much of this info would have been better served by good dialogue, but they used these extremely poorly written songs that are so, so bad, and superficial, and obvious. It's just a bad movie.
I keep hearing praise for the acting of Zoe and Karla, and while I agree that they are not to blame for a bad script, I really do think they did a very bad job.
The issue here is the language, the script they were given is horrendous, but also, they keep switching between different accents (anything but Mexican ones), Karla uses words from Spain that us Mexicans never use or even know, there's to much swearing (they sound like middle school kids, not adults). It's to much and I just can't take them seriously.
And that's just the acting, this movie is horrible in so many ways.
I don't remember any film in history getting this much negative attention for it's Oscar nominations. But there's still some hope, since the academy can vote up to February 18th and might be susceptible to overwhelming criticism...? Maybe...?
