Robert & Viewers, First THANK YOU Robert for your time and glad you enjoyed your time with us at the OSU Farm Science Review. A few notes. 1st I made some errors while trying to help Robert, while my cousin farms, I only help occasionally and did not always have the answer at the tip of my tongue and my wife noted a few errors I made, like calling a corn sheller a corn husker, not the same thing. I also mixed a few words and my wife said I used the word "thing" way too much, sorry. I am a Massey Ferguson fan and Robert would have made it to John Deere, but the day got away from us, just too much to do in one day. The grain rescue display is a demo of what can go wrong and how to do recoveries, it is for training fire departments across Ohio and other 1st responders mainly on grain entrapment rescues, but same practices works with other stock pile entrapments like sand, stone, etc. The big mis-conception is you can just pull a person from grain or sand, but you can not, the pressure is so much it would actually rip the person apart. Per my granddaughter Journey, if you have watched Robert's 2019 Ohio visit to PIB and the Columbus meetup, Journey was the little baby that Robert held, a very tiny girl that did not stay that way very long, at the time of this video she is 4 and her brother Ryder 2. They both love Robert very much. Per Liz, the older lady in the video, she is 94 in this video, still living on her own. She was the oldest at Robert's 2019 meetup. I encourage everyone to attend a farm show, ask questions, never assume and then also go out and visit farmers, almost all love to take time and teach others. Not mentioned in the video, beware, many relationships have started at the FSR. My daughter meet her husband at the FSR. The FSR farm manager (not seen in this video) was a former student worker at the FSR as was his now wife. Many other couples have met at the FSR. Robert, you will be operating equipment as soon as you get back to Ohio. Thank again Robert for your time and interest and for allowing me to overwhelm you once again, never enough time. I look forward to helping you delve deeper into the agriculture industry, from driving equipment, to seeing grain processed and seeing other aspects of agriculture, like the show manager Nick's farm, he grows hops used in many different beers in Ohio, you two could talk about beer for a day I am sure, along with trying the different types, lol. Some notes if interested, on grain heads for the combine, the small grains head (2nd one in video) is called a draper head (belt gathering to the throat instead of an auger like the corn head), this allows the head to drap aka hug unlevel ground a lot better than the old/traditional small grain head that also uses an auger like the corn head. Combine prices have increased even more since this was filmed just a short time ago. It is hard for smaller farmers to afford a new combine. My family has not had a brand new combine since the 1970's. As of today end of Jan 2024 the markets are lower than what farmers really need, corn is around $4 to $4.50 per bushel, far below what a farmer really needs. The modern equipment while a lot easier to operate, the tech can cause you headaches to, just like our home computers give us fits. But when it works, it works great, set things up for different outcomes, hit a button and it will lift/lower equipment, speed up/slow down and even do the turns for you without you having to do any more. Old equipment you had to do each step on it's own. If you have questions, reply to this comment and I will do my best to get you the answer(s). The Fendt class 10 combine at the field demo had a 60' draper head on it. When my granddad passed away in 1989 the family farm had a 20' and he thought my cousin was crazy wanting to get a 25'. He could not have imagined how large the equipment would continue to get.

I was the engineering managerfor all CNH America manufacturing plants. All Case, NewHolland, Farmall, and Kobelco were my responsibility. I love my brand. CNH America is a great place to work and they contribute so much for each community the plants are located at. Buy Red or Blue and you wont be disappointed. I also trained to drive their articulated dump trucks in the Chicago Thanksgiving parade. Employess could choose to drive a CNH product or be a balloon handler for their huge float you actually went to a couple of classes to learn how. Great fun, we also give back and build habitat houses in the summer.

Coming from a bit of farming heritage, this episode was enjoyable to watch. Love seeing the old tractors and trucks. So grateful that you got to see and learn up close about this incredibly modern and surprisingly advanced equipment… I always gain knowledge from your content, and this episode was no different.
Thanks to Jim and family for spending time to take you around so that you could indulge your curiosities while capturing it all. You obviously had fun, and did a terrific job of showing everything from an outsider’s perspective… which happens to be the perspective of most of us!
As part of our own RV trip this summer, we have two Harvest Host farm stays planned in Montana and Wyoming. Every trip should include at least one. They really add something special and different to an itinerary, and introduces you first hand to not just the how’s and why’s and what-nots of farm/ranch life, but you get to meet some pretty incredible people too. Thanks so much for jumping off the usual path and uploading something different. Thumbs up all the way.😉

Thank you for your comment. Sure hope others listen and do as you noted about farm stays, does not need to be a HH, could be a farmer you stopped and talked to and you might just get an invite to park there for the night. My cousin never turns down those asking to ride along, especially during harvest.

Hey Robert, I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed watching this video. When I left school and being around farming all my life I got a job at the local Massey-Ferguson dealership as an Apprentice Agricultural Engineer. I also worked on Balers, Potato harvesters, Sugar Beet Harvesters. In fact you name it I've repaired it, all makes too. That was all back in the day when IH was still International Harvester and Case was still Case. Thanks again, Tony.

Went to something like this event in Moultrie, Georgia back in 1995 with a "best buddy" (who died near 11 years ago - cancer) and I was impressed! But this event! Wow! Such technology increase in near 30 years since that event I went to!

A fantastic video! Thank you for sharing it. Farmers are quiet superheroes. They are the foundation of our food production. Getting a peek into the machinery used in the agricultural is one way to create a bond between the producer and consumer. The costs are enormous. I was amazed at the technology. The vintage machines reminds us how far we have come. What a fascinating behind the scenes look at the mechanics of agriculture. Awesome video.

If you're ever in Pa in January (brrr) you should check it out. It is all indoors though so not too cold. They have a winter RV show in the same farm show complex every year too.

Mornin' Robert! So you've taken us to RV shows and a farm equipment show...when is the boat show? The amount and sheer variety of farming equipment at that place is kind of overwhelming. The modern machinery with all the tech is fascinating, but I have a soft spot for the vintage stuff. (If you're ever in the Sacramento area, The California Ag Museum has a really impressive collection) "Farming is not as hard as it used to be..." Well, it all depends--have you seen Clarkson's Farm? 🙂
One thing those huge, million-dollar machines illustrates is the rise of corporate farming. The family farm in America isn't quite extinct, but it's definitely on the endangered species list. Until next time, happy farming!

    • @forry100
      @forry100 4 месяца назад

Per Corporate farming, depends on what qualifies as one. My cousin farms less than 2000 acres, yet to some is considered a Corp farm. We have neighbors that farm 6000 acres, under an LLC but still 100% family owned & managed. A few go even higher, yet still a family farm. Not sure what really makes a farm a corporate farm, but am afraid we may soon find out or worse they will all be government farms. Per equipment, it has gotten out of control. My cousin says he can no longer justify a 3 yr old machine like he use to. The only thing that helps justify spending the money is the efficiency in the newer machines. My cousin owns some old pieces and they smoke up the shop real fast, the newer you do not even know they are running, so clean. Planters and sprayers that are far more efficient, using less seed and chemicals helps justify them. But sadly unlike any other business, the farmer rarely gets to set his price for the harvested product, he must accept what the market will pay and right now it is down. Not sure how buying new can work, unless you timed the market just right.

I am sure Robert will get a chance to ride in the largest of the combines, like the Fendt 10 with the 60' draper head. But you can watch his video with my cousin back in 2021 in a smaller combine (small compared to the Class 10's with the 40' draper head. Btw Massey Ferguson & Fendt owned by same company AGCO, so a lot of shared technology.

Farming is a very hard, but honorable job. I would become a farmer if tomorrow I wasn't working on my 9 to 5.

I don't see a tractor in your future but I do see a zero turn mower

For Pelicamp a tractor with a loader would be best. Not much to mow. The backhoe attachment would be nice, but those always lead to trouble, always looking for something to dig, lol.

Robert, I realize that you are very very busy, but I recently sent a message via FB to you regarding an interesting historical story about a fire that happened on the same day as the Chicago Fire.

I’ve been around farm equipment all my live - it’s getting out of control with technology - soon a farm will just sit on the couch and monitor sh-t - haha

    • @forry100

Afraid that is the plan. Farmers like my cousin still love to operate equipment, but not going to be easy going forward. Sure hope I am wrong, but...

It is sad what is going on and why Robert & I feel it is so important for people to have a better understanding of what it really takes to farm and how important farmers are to us.

Too much government intervention in Europe- the farmers and truckers have had enough!

@@Floridiansince94 Sadly same thing here and it is growing. I worry about our future. We forgot the lesson Stalin taught us when the government takes away the ownership and control of farms, people starve. But those in power always think they know better than those doing the work.

WOW!!! What a show!!! But, I noticed you are very bad about overtalking people...they are trying to explain, and you talk over them. That was kind of annoying. But all in all, great show.
