Aran Ryan is definitely the best shown through animation. Even without him talking you know exactly what his personality is. The sporadic way he moves around combined with his facial expressions makes him hilarious to fight.
I never played Punch Out, but I’ve been watching videos of it recently. I watched a fight of Aran Ryan where he tried to hit you after he already got knocked down. The funny thing is, seeing how he was cocky and aggressive, I was thinking “He’s gonna pull some cheap move, isn’t he” before he even did it. Then I saw him swing a glove on a rope and I CALLED it! I gotta give credit, they really nailed the “Angry Irishman looking for a fight” stereotype with Aran.
Let us not ignore Ayan Ryan's everything. There's a few clips of him throughout the video and the one where he leaves his spot to mess with Little Mac makes me laugh every time. So much expression oozing out of one character. The animators did a fantastic job
Especially in his rematch when he gets the glove whip. They have a LOT of fun animating that thing, to the point where he even gets a cheeky hit when he gets downed.
I also loved how they played with 7. Mac has 7 stamina, Aran takes seven punches before recovering from his stun. 7 star punches end the match. He always get up off the mat on the count of 7. Nice touch.
Went from being completely forgettable in the original to one of the funniest characters in the game. With his psychotic mentality, his creepy grin after assaulting the ref, his hilarious taunts when knocked down, and of course, his "stanky leg" knockout pose, they went above and beyond with him. ME SISTER HITS HARDER THAN YOU BOYO! *gets hit by debris thrown by the crowd then goes into a frenzy* That never gets old.
SuperYoshiFan10090 Studios 3: these are not reasons to hate the console, if you’ll hate the console then hate it for its games or the way it functions or whether it can play games smoothly or not. The switch does all of these things. It’s a bummer that the virtual console isn’t in it but still... the console is the best Nintendo console. Not only that but the online is harmless. It’s only 20$ and gives you some retro games on the go. And don’t say “but they don’t have detected servers so the online sucks” cuz they never had any severs back when it was free and games still payed smoothly. You’re only paying 20$ not even half of play station’s price
@SuperYoshiFan10090 Studios ps4 and xbox is like 60 bucks for online doe switch is only 20 also virtual consle sucks if its from a previous generation i could just play it on an emulator for free Anyway mario oddessey and smash ultimate are worth the whole console by themselves same with zelda breath of the wild
SuperYoshiFan10090 Studios Again it’s power is powerful enough to run any game on its hardware. Not only that but ps 4 and Xbox charges 60$, for what? Games like over cook? Even if they somehow got you a game like god of war you still payed 60$! Might as well buy the game cuz it’s 60$ You saying the switch isn’t powerful isn’t anything at all, as long as it plays it’s own games like Zelda and doom smoothly then it’s powerful
reta It can be argued. Same with Mario. They thought going from left to right will be boring and they were right. Then Mario made a jump into 3D and stuff changed. Same can be done with punch, imagine WALKING around the ring, hitting your foes from the back and what not. Really all the punch out games have been 2d and not 3D. Plus, punch out has a formula, from the top their games seem to be the same, but just like Mario and Zelda it’s their enemies that makes each game different
Honestly if it got more love it would probably get a bigger development team assigned to it which would be less cohesive and we wouldn't get beautiful and clever gems of animation like this game. It takes a small team with a lot of love for the series and an un-pressured supervisor to make a game like this
Another thing I really love about this game is the sound design and effects. They not only managed to convey personality through gameplay, appearance, and animation, but also with the sound. Hearing pop fizz and cans opening when Soda Popinski winds up? Hearing a tree fall when Bear Hugger goes down? Hearing Train noises during Sandman's Dreamland Express? They even gave Glass Joe sound effects from the NES Punch-Out since he's the first fighter, and therefore one of the most memorable.
I love how the animations even go OVER the UI at the top. It gives so much more space on the screen for these well-done animations, and neither are intrusive of the other.
Something I love is how the opponents react to the star punch. In contender mode when you wind up they're confused because they don't know what your doing. In title defense mode, however, when you wind up they have a look of terror. They clearly now know what your doing and remember what happened the last time you did this. They even attempt to (if not actually) dodge it, which makes sense if you used a star punch on them before. (And alot of you probably have.) It adds so much realism and you can clearly see that they remember when you last did it by looking at them. Some of them even scream right before you punch but after you start winding up. (Example: glass Joe.)
Well... Everyone is terrified. EXCEPT ARAN RYAN, AS ALWAYS. He's just staring at you, like "YEAH, BABY, FINALLY". I'm starting to think that he picked up boxing because he's a masochist. :")
I've played Punch-Out so much for so long, but I've only JUST noticed that when Great Tiger splits into two, Little Mac looks directly at the real one and follows his movements.
I was thinking about this franchise lately, getting a new entry and stuff, but then it crossed my mind, how do you improve on this one game ? The game is pretty much flawless on what it sets out to do, and now, nearly a decade later, the game is still being praised; actually, even more so than it used to. Everything was done right and it aged incredibly. I think a re release with maybe some extra content is the way to go.
The only two minor complaints I have about Punch-Out for the Wii are: 1. No Classic Controller support (I hate having to point and click at menus) 2. The two-player mode is weak. It's not as smooth or intuitive as the normal game. Otherwise, it's pretty much PERFECT. I still enjoy playing it and my daughter (age 9) loves it too.
Fun fact: if you move the camera to the side of the fight using mods when Little Mac "Hits" his opponent you can see that Mac doesn't actually hit them he just stops his fist halfway to their face and the opponent is basically just doing the fakest selling ever.
I'd really love to see a segment on how to make idle animations actually seem natural and yet still also be so full of character. We can all think of those that are a bit... off, either the idle animation is too fast, the character holds too still, their breathing is off if they breath at all. Then there are those that surprise and delight with how much detail and thought was put into it (think Rick from Kirby Star Allies, Mario in Super Mario Odyssey, etc.). I mean, sometimes animations don't even need to be that impressive, like the monologues of characters in Borderlands 2 when the player stands still for too long. Or including a slew of optional emotes for MMORPGS so that you can choose how expressive you want to be while waiting for an event to start. Regardless, I think there's a lot their that you could unpack.
If you make this, consider Alice Liddell from good old American McGee's Alice, and from Alice: Madness Returns, too. She has some of the most amusing idle animations.
Or, how about the idle animations the Sonic games have? I know that technically doesn't fit here since those are more of waiting animations, but still.
So I spent about an hour just now looking for this video. I remembered it had a narrator with a high pitched voice, and it dealt with Wii Punch-Out, but that's all I could remember. I finally, finally found it!! I wonder why it was taken down off the Extra Credits channel? This video is one of my all time favorite break down type videos ever. This is great stuff.
I figured I remembered watching this in Extra Credits. The commentary was the exact same, so I went "Wait. Is this the same one with EC?" Regardless, best of luck in your future endeavours.
Or, you know, just make a new punch-out game. I was so disappointed with ARMS' reveal trailer cuz I thought it was going to be punch-out at the beginning

This video convinced me to buy this game off amazon. I’ve always been interested in punch out, watching gameplay of it both main games, asking my dad what he thought the first one, and now I’m just super into it.
I just bought the game too! Found it at GameStop for $25, with the manual and the original, non- Nintendo Selects release. GameStop is so iffy with that stuff. Last time I played this, I rented it from a Family Video in 2010. +Enchilordo, be sure to come back here and tell us what you think of the game after you've played it.
aran ryan is my favourite character simply because of the way he moves; its so smooth but somehow sudden and jerky at the same time! when he darts erratically across the ring and is always in a crouching position, and especially the way he recovers from punches by just kind of... jumping out of it and sliding back into that crouch. also him just screaming after the beginning cutscene. i love conveying character through movement its so good :)
So many characters in this game have so much personality but my favorite might b the opponent w/ the least amt, that being Mr. Sandman. He’s not a jokey caricature, there’s not much to his personality & his animations aren’t as showy as everyone else’s. What I love abt him is that he’s a force of nature and the animation conveys this perfectly. His intro in contender mode & Mr. Sandman’s theme itself shows that Mac is going into the biggest fight of his life and that fight is against the unstoppable force AND the immovable object. I also love how his animated intro shows that Sandman worked his way to the top w/o being gimmicky. Sheer, raw, intimidating power. And if Mac isn’t careful, it’s good night for him. What’s more, Mr. Sandman seems like a boxer that would actually exist, like your legendary icons of boxing such as Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Robinson. I also love his name, it gives him a sort of sports entertainment wrestler-like appeal what w/ like when Mac gets knocked down and is trying to get up & Sandman taunts him by faking being asleep and many of his lines in title defense This has become less abt the animation & more abt certain aspects of Mr. Sandman but I just think he’s super cool and the game’s animations RLY help sell the character and set him apart from everyone Mac fought before in the game leading up to him.
@@bluerious5475 Those two and Sly Cooper are literally the first things that come to mind when I think of shitty cell shading. Windwaker being one of the worst.
I sort of wish all of Mac's opponents in the Wii game were alternate skins for him in Super Smash Bros, like the Koopalings for Bowser Jr. Sadly, I don't think that would work, since they all move so differently and have wildly different body types, and you can't just shrink them down or speed them up.
What Next Level really needs to do Is to work their animation magic so another Punch-Out game can be released. And I'm not talking about a remake, I mean a new game with new Characters with new tells for each one, and different personalities for each of them.
Animators: Put their heart and soul into making the game visually pleasing and every character unique and filled with personality Speedrunners: “Hahah, what If we speed-run the game blindfolded?” Animators: “Am I a joke to you?”
That’s a kiss to the sound design team. The entire game is also based around sound cues, I have a good amount still memorized as someone that tried blindfold runs and haven’t gone back to it in 5 years, every sound is ingrained into my head.
I don't know. I think if the animation was ugly or forgettable people wouldn't do that. If you are blindfolded it's because you know them so well that with just the sound you can see the entire thing happening in your head. Those people have memorized every single frame of animation and can see them perfectly in their head.
Bruh, how did you not talk about the stitches and bruises that are originally inside the character's model and then clip outside so you can see them when they're hurt... that's technically animation... but 10\10 video nonetheless 😇
Nextlevel games also worked on the last two Luigis mansion games, and LM3 has some particularly spectacular animation. There are some really talented animators at next level games.
I would really love a bit of a deep dive into how animations are blended when transitioning from one to the next. It's fascinating to me that you can have a "walk" animation that slowly transitions into the run animation, and how a jump animation can be stitched into a "landing" animation.
I wonder how many of these techniques were properly employed in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which has a mechanically very similar combat system. I can’t imagine as much attention was given to each variety of enemy, since there are far more of them.
I almost teared up. I was wondering where ya went, man. After ya left Extra Credits, it just wasn't quite the same. I'm so glad i found this. This video happens to be one of my favorite from there, but now i can see it here, instead. Welcome back, Dan. :)
the little nerding out bits where you compare the NES version to the Wii version made me giggle and kick my feet like a schoolgirl because I LOVE FINDING PEOPLE AS PASSIONATE AS ME ABOUT THIS GAME
I think it's interesting how, if you throw a punch your opponent blocks, you can actually see Little Mac wiggle his hand a bit as if absorbing the unpleasant blow. Also if he's throwing out a high punch when the opponent is dodged away, he flails a little bit to regain his balance. Stuff like that is really pleasing if you pay close attention to it.
If you think about it , every ennemy only has star punches and the biggest advantage of mac is to have non star punch : *YOUR BIGGEST STRENGH IS TO HAVE WEAKS FAST JABS*
I'm surprised that people are still talking about this game after more than 10 years. My youngest likes it more than anything he can play on switch and we are always watching youtube on how to complete challenges.
I sometimes just rewatch this video to get a much needed injection of positivity. You sell the greatness of this so well, that it just makes the video entertaining on it's own, but there is also a lot of knowledge oozing from this piece.
Thanks for this video I became a punch out fan, something I wouldn’t even imagine and all thanks to one phrase of one of the characters...”as visto hombre? Como enamoro a las chicas?”
Punch Out is one of my favorite games, and I so badly want the Wii version, it has my favorite animation for a game. Everything about it is perfect to me.
There’s a glitch where you use a star punch during the Bull Charge’s windup and the camera ends up looking at the fight from the side. Mac’s animations look ridiculous and offputting, which really emphasizes just how useful having a fixed camera is for animation.
New Frame Plus, if you haven't already, I bet Splatoon would be amazing for animation analysis! The characters have so much personality, the tentacles move realistically, and the characters seem really loose-jointed, excited, and competitive at the same time, regardless of their action! (Except the jump...) I'd suggest looking at Splatoon 2 because not only are Pearl and Marina's animations spectacular, but there are so many character customizations, like more tentacles and Octolings, which may make it better to analyze than OG. Up to you though!
12:51 Round 1 Little Mac: 2 Knockdowns, almost no health left Bald Bull: no Knockdowns, almost all health left New Frame Plus: "BOOM! dOwN hE gOeS aGaIn!"
it makes me so happy seeing someone else geek out about the animation in this game! everything about it is brilliant, and i just LOVE this game for it. it turns a boxing game into a super fun romp just through the characters' personalities! you touched on everything i would have, and it's great. great video, great game, i LOVE THIS. edit: AND I LOVE THE LOVE FOR KING HIPPO HES SO GREAT
I never cared about Punch Out until I saw the game grumps (i think) play the Wii version and I kind of fell in love with it. The characters and animation are some of the most charming, fun, and interesting I've ever seen in a game, so much so that it gave me an appreciation for the original as well. It's really cool
Thanks so much for sharing your insight! I love how you articulate what makes some animations so much more satisfying than others. I would love to see you tackle the unique artwork & animation in the Borderlands series. I'm not really sure why I'm so drawn to it, but there is probably some super interesting logic (or perhaps voodoo) behind it that I'm unaware of!
If this was just about the nes game I would be happy (because gosh darn they did so much with so little [check out designing fors video after this one]), but you went in and did the Wii so I'm beyond thrilled.
Fantastic video. As someone who appreciates animation so much in video games, I’m glad someone noticed how great the animation was in this game as well. Great job man.
I wish they’d make a 3D Punch Out where you could move around the ring like keep the same fighting styles that punch out has including the star punches but unfortunately that won’t happen probably.
I am not really a fan of the punchout franchise as a whole for playing, but it is always fun to watch someone else play it and figure out all the strategies. This was a really fun and interesting video to watch, I'm glad you reminded me about this new channel in the Katamari videos because I had forgotten to subscribe. Have a good day.
I love how you can tell with this newer game that the animators are happy they can finally convey what they were trying to do with the old sprites in a way that actually makes sense

This has become less abt the animation & more abt certain aspects of Mr. Sandman but I just think he’s super cool and the game’s animations RLY help sell the character and set him apart from everyone Mac fought before in the game leading up to him.
My favorite part is that they took Cell Shading, which I normally can't stand, and made it look REALLY good.
JakeSnake07 And Nintendo has done that once again with BOTW. (And Windwaker too)
@@bluerious5475 Those two and Sly Cooper are literally the first things that come to mind when I think of shitty cell shading. Windwaker being one of the worst.
JakeSnake07
Why are they shitty, do you think it ruins the artstyle of models?
JakeSnake07 Windwaker and BOTW have some of the best styles I’ve seen in games. It’s extremely well done.
@@bluerious5475 *Laughs in Borderlands*
Other boxer: They have good animation, mechanics,...
Meanwhile King Hippo:
*He is just gud*
I sort of wish all of Mac's opponents in the Wii game were alternate skins for him in Super Smash Bros, like the Koopalings for Bowser Jr. Sadly, I don't think that would work, since they all move so differently and have wildly different body types, and you can't just shrink them down or speed them up.
Having his color palletes match the og line up would be neat tho. Ex: Orange hair and white and red shorts for glass joe
Well, lets be honest the koopalings are all different sizes, and that wasn't changed from bowser jr.'s size in smash.
What Next Level really needs to do Is to work their animation magic so another Punch-Out game can be released. And I'm not talking about a remake, I mean a new game with new Characters with new tells for each one, and different personalities for each of them.
@@vrthird5644 Yeah, but overall it's way easier to scale them for Bowser Jr's size then for someone like King Hippo to be downscaled to Mac's size.
WobblewokGaming next level has some amazing animation, examples such as Punch out and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon.
I love how happy you sound when you talk about this, can’t keep the smile off my face during this video
Animators: Put their heart and soul into making the game visually pleasing and every character unique and filled with personality
Speedrunners: “Hahah, what If we speed-run the game blindfolded?”
Animators: “Am I a joke to you?”
I'd love an episode on top-down, isometric, pixel-art animations, like old-school Zelda
Me three!
Zelda was never isometric though. Sonic was, but never Zelda.
@@BrickBreakerXX ? Isometric sonic? I assume your talking about 3d blast and labrynth and not the normal trilogy
**Glass joes theme plays in the background**
VIVE LA FRANCE
Bruh, how did you not talk about the stitches and bruises that are originally inside the character's model and then clip outside so you can see them when they're hurt... that's technically animation... but 10\10 video nonetheless 😇
That's modelling
Nextlevel games also worked on the last two Luigis mansion games, and LM3 has some particularly spectacular animation. There are some really talented animators at next level games.
I would really love a bit of a deep dive into how animations are blended when transitioning from one to the next. It's fascinating to me that you can have a "walk" animation that slowly transitions into the run animation, and how a jump animation can be stitched into a "landing" animation.
Glad to see this channel is finally up!! I can't wait to rewatch the rest of these things as a refresher before the new one comes out!!
Loved this episode in the extra frames series. Great to see you producing content again Dan!
Now I know why Luigis Mansion 3 had such charming cutscenes! It was made by these folks, and these guys are masters at game animation
2:54 "Adorable little battle grunts"
Gotta love those subtitles
I wonder how many of these techniques were properly employed in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which has a mechanically very similar combat system.
I can’t imagine as much attention was given to each variety of enemy, since there are far more of them.
I almost teared up. I was wondering where ya went, man. After ya left Extra Credits, it just wasn't quite the same. I'm so glad i found this. This video happens to be one of my favorite from there, but now i can see it here, instead. Welcome back, Dan. :)
Glad you found me!
This is one of my absolute favorite videos. Thank you so much for making it, Dan!
Did anyone realize that when little Mac dodges he leaves an after image confusing the fighters
We NEED a punch-out re-release for the switch, it would be AWESOME!
XD My speaker glitched at the perfect time at around 3:38, so it sounded like you said
"Every F*ker in the game.."
LOL
the little nerding out bits where you compare the NES version to the Wii version made me giggle and kick my feet like a schoolgirl because I LOVE FINDING PEOPLE AS PASSIONATE AS ME ABOUT THIS GAME
you were talking about King Hippo a lot, but are we just gonna ignore the sheer chaos coming from Aran Ryan?
15:36 Best part: "Yah! What? Oh no ow ow ow ow ow..."
The animation team didn't release the bogus, they released the beauty
I could not for the love of god i can’t time the bull rush punch
Definitely one of my favorite modern games, especially since I used to play the original one as a kid.
I always loved Punch Out Wii, it was a great way to reboot the series, hoping we get a new Punch Out for the Switch
This takes the franchise to the Next Level!
10:43 That moment is Vs mode!
"star punches."
o-oh, yeah, that too.
So would you say that these animators have "Next Level" skill?
9:13 “To really sell that impact of the punch.”
Show quite literally one of the only two moves in the entire game that isn’t a punch
Next Level also did a fantastic job with the animation in Luigi's Mansion 3.
I'm surprised that people are still talking about this game after more than 10 years. My youngest likes it more than anything he can play on switch and we are always watching youtube on how to complete challenges.
This game needs a remaster on the switch Punch out is literally one of my favorite games of all time
10:44 theres actually a second scenario where he gets a wind up animation. and thats in head to head mode where little mac behaves alot like an enemy
When you realize Glass Joe is more experienced than Mr.Sandman
i agree with everything you said. god its such an insane game. how could nintendo forget about this?!
I love this game's animation and especially the way this video explains it!
8:59 hmmm.....
So sorry
Let us grieve glass joe in the english captions
I always die of laughter when Von Kaiser peeks out and cowardly says “mommy”
I sometimes just rewatch this video to get a much needed injection of positivity. You sell the greatness of this so well, that it just makes the video entertaining on it's own, but there is also a lot of knowledge oozing from this piece.
Thanks for this video I became a punch out fan, something I wouldn’t even imagine and all thanks to one phrase of one of the characters...”as visto hombre? Como enamoro a las chicas?”
Never even played this game and I can feel how much of a masterpiece it is, great video
I remember another artist saying this about Punch-Out!!:
The animation makes me do naughty things.
I like how he gets how satisfying the punches are like me
I'd be really interested in a video on the original punch out for NES, and how they attempted detailed animation with such strict hardware limitations
New chips had to be used to allow for detailed large and dynamic sprites
15:45 I love how it takes Glass Joe a moment to process what’s happening compared to the others, like he’s been hit in the head one too many times
Punch Out is one of my favorite games, and I so badly want the Wii version, it has my favorite animation for a game. Everything about it is perfect to me.
my personal favorite knock down animation is soda popinski
a star punch makes it look amazing
I love the metal-sounding impact. Just THUNK!, not even the ring bouncing him a bit.
Excellent stuff, I'm sold! I know this was an older video that I just apparently missed out on before, but keep it up!
12:51
Round 1
Little Mac: 2 Knockdowns, almost no health left
Bald Bull: no Knockdowns, almost all health left
New Frame Plus: "BOOM! dOwN hE gOeS aGaIn!"
I just realized Little Mac’s head follows the real Great Tiger when he does his clone attack
I remember seeing this video on Extra Credits. Great to see it return.
it makes me so happy seeing someone else geek out about the animation in this game! everything about it is brilliant, and i just LOVE this game for it. it turns a boxing game into a super fun romp just through the characters' personalities! you touched on everything i would have, and it's great. great video, great game, i LOVE THIS. edit: AND I LOVE THE LOVE FOR KING HIPPO HES SO GREAT
Thanks to the subtitle guy for making it say *Glass Joe is NOT having a good day*
It's honestly amazing how characters with about 10 seconds of cutscenes each are some of the most expressive characters in gaming history
I just love how different their knockout animations are when you hit in the head or the gut
if a new punch out game comes out on switch i would pop off so hard
It's stuff like this and designing for's video that makes me so impressed on how much magic is in the punch out series
8:59 [Glass Joe is not having a good day]
I wish they’d make a 3D Punch Out where you could move around the ring like keep the same fighting styles that punch out has including the star punches but unfortunately that won’t happen probably.
