*Update: We did make a few small errors. Our pinned comment has the corrections.
Ever wonder what Glass Joe says? Or that Great Tiger said something not family friendly? Find out as we translate what the fighters from Punch out have been saying!
Sorry about the delay guys, both Nik and my computer had issues (my OS corrupted and Nik's power supply died.) So imagine having the video done two weeks ago, on a hard drive neither of us could gain access to. Thank you for your patience.

In Japanese sports events such as this, it’s actually customary to look your opponent in the eye while bowing when you’re in very close proximity. Partially for the reason of - they can literally just punch you as hard as they can if they were an asshole. If you were on opposite sides of the ring, or the fight hasn’t started as we saw in his intro cutscene, you would bow without looking them in the eye.

If I recall, the "mother's milk" line is used colloquially as "you have the strength of a child, and should eat like one". I am Japanese.🇯🇵
Piston hondo says Japanese proverbs at intermissions.
    I will try to explain.
    ①「心頭滅却すれば、火もまた涼し」
(If your head and your heart are at peace , even a fire stays cool. )
One way of holding one's mind is to stop feeling any pain.
    ②「肉を斬らせて骨を断つ」
(Let your enemy cut your flesh and you will break his bone.)
A metaphor for inflicting a greater blow on an opponent while being prepared to hurt yourself.
    ③「虎穴に入らずんば虎児を得ず」
(If you do not enter the tiger's den , you won't catch his cubs.)
It means that in order to acquire a tiger cub, you have to take a risk in the cave where a tiger lives, so unless you take a risk, you cannot achieve great success or achievement.
It is a proverb of similar meaning to 『Nothing ventured, nothing gained.』
    ④「勝って兜の緒を締めよ」
(Keep the helmet of victory fastened.)
It means that if you win a battle and take off your helmet with a sigh of relief, the enemy will not always attack you, so even if you win, don't let your guard down and be more careful.
It is a proverb of similar meaning to
『Don't halloo till you are out of the wood.』
I hope it will be helpful to you.
    Thank you for reading.

3:38 I actually have an Idea for why he yells "Combat Boots!". The german word for glove is Handschuh. A compound word, meaning "hand shoe/boot". So this line would be a genius pun, because he is wearing two different types of combat boots.

    • @overlordalfredo
      @overlordalfredo 5 лет назад +138

Neat idea but I don't think this is the case.
German military combat boots are famous for excellent quality and a lot of German soldiers define prestige and discipline over the shape and model of the combat boots they are wearing.
*Literally you spend about 1/4 of your base military training in germany cleaning your boots!* - especially infantry units need to have shiny boots even when having an inspection in the middle of a combat training... ridiculous, but no joke!
So the reason for this battle cry is most likely just the pure pride for having nice and clean high value combat boots.

I am German and Von Kaiser always made me laugh :) Every time he says "bums" I lose it.
Edit: "Tantenkaffee" refers to coffee with your aunt, not tea. It refers to a practice we call "Kaffee und Kuchen" which means having coffee and cake with your relatives or friends. Older people love it and talk for a million hours and younger people are mostly bored when the relatives won't shut up about stuff that you weren't alive for. It can take from 5 to a billion hours and don't believe your mom when she says they're wrapping up. That's code for another hour at least :)

7:00: THERE I am. (I know, it didn't make sense to me either.)
7:01: Heh, you're just a wet kitty. (metaphor for a scared person) You're going to fight a tiger?
    7:05: No problems here.
7:11: Actually as accurate as it can get. gg Google Translate, gg.
7:22: Where's are you paying attention?
    7:24: What's this?!
7:26: From the left! Oh, betrayed...
    7:28: Trapped!
7:30: I'm not sure what he exactly says, but I think he's saying "Hosh me reh" which means he's telling himself to stay conscious.
    7:35: Oh, where am I?
    7:41: Tiger's Grasp!
7:43: Hey, where did he go?!
    7:44: Your memory's sharp, right?
    7:46: What's your favorite color?
    7:58: Charge! Charge!
8:05: Now lick the dust off my soles. (I'm not kidding, this phrase isn't used normally here in India either. More on this ahead.)
8:13: Accurate, but it's actually a commonly used mini-insult here. I get why people not familiar with local Hindi would be surprised.
Now the thing is, most of the lines he uses sound very forced and unnatural. Some phrases, like the dust off the soles thing, is something you'd hear probably in the 1900's. Others, like the "Oh, betrayed", don't even make sense even in the context of Hindi.
Either way, can I get a pin? :3
