    Cool sprite rendering fact (at least I think so):
    Notice how Dan said that the sprite layer could only have 3 distinct colors per 8×8 sprite, but if you look at e.g. the black wizard, you'll notice some characters have 4 distinct colors in the overworld sprite? And actually, all the battle sprites have 4 distinct colors everywhere!
    Here's how that's done:
    - For the overworld sprites, the head and body are not part of the same 8×8 square, so the head can have a different color palette. You can notice in the black wizard sprite, one of the walking frames puts the yellow hat slightly below the head sprite and into the body sprite, so the closest matching color (the pink-ish color) is used for the lowest line of pixels (see 8:35).
    - For the battle sprites another trick is used! The background is black already, so there's no real point in drawing black pixels on top. So actually all the black pixels in the combat sprites are transparent instead of black! That leaves the 3 (non-transparent) pixels for 3 distinct colors. That's why the battle sprites look a little more fancy. You can see this at 7:14 when the black background is replaced by a blue background, and indeed the black pixels of the battle sprites (reused in this screen here) are blue instead. You can also see the black pixels flash yellow when the background of the battle arena flashes yellow later on.

    • @geneirai
      @geneirai 2 года назад +1

      the thing I like about this trick is you may notice the change but never quetion why the sprite does this because of where the transparent pixels are used, pixel art especially '8bit' pixel art looks easy to produce but there is actually a lot of artistry on display here!

    I've always kinda enjoyed the blank-slate cast of FF1 and 3. While yes, they don't have any character of their own, it allows for me to fill in the gaps with my own stuff. It's like my own personal dungeons and dragons party, and I can imagine how different characters would react in certain situations. This is further amplified by how you can name them whatever you want. So I usually name my party after a group of my friends. It's fun to imagine what classes each of them would be, and what they would say or do in the fairly open-ended scenarios the games put you in. While I enjoy the more in-depth stories and characters of the later games, I don't think we give enough appreciation to blank slates and how they can make you interact with the game in a unique way.

Through things like having to choose from a limited selection of spells or randomized stats and dice rolls just always seeming to succeed or fail, your own party really did become special with each play through. Man, though, hearing you explains just what lives on which layer in the battle was *incredible* - just imagining the sheer hoops a developer had to jump through to re-envision each layer and how the different effects would interact is pretty fascinating. Thank you for that.

    dragonquest 1, from around the same time. it was the same console, same limitations, still iconic!
    also, there were computer-based rpg's from that time period that inspired these games, so the origin of most of what you looked at in this video, is from there and not on nintendo consoles.

    "Didn't have much faith" - Wasn't this the game that they assumed was going to be the last game the studio ever made, due to financial trouble? Hence the name? Even if they had faith this roll of the dice would work they still didn't really have money to spend on it from my understanding.
    I've been looking forward to this series since you mentioned capturing footage for it back when you first took a break from capturing footage for Sonic games several years ago to capture footage for it :) And definitely agree that retro video game mechanics explained is a fun channel.

      I've heard that's the myth. They called it Final Fantasy because they actually wanted "Fighting Fantasy" but they couldn't get the rights to the name. If they had their first choice this wouldn't have been called "Final" at all, so the 'last chance' thing seems questionable.

    • @GeminiTasiri
      @GeminiTasiri 3 года назад +1

      The "It's called Final Fantasy because it was Square's last game" is kind of an urban legend. In actuality, according to Sakaguchi himself, the original title of the game was supposed to be "Fighting Fantasy" but then got changed over trademark concernes. Since they still wanted a nice catchy "FF" abreviation, they settled on Final Fantasy instead.
      That being said, it was a make-or-break situation for both Sakaguchi (he would've gone back to university if FF1 hadn't been successful) and the company, but according to the man himself, the "Final" part of the title was not chosen to reflect that, literally any word starting with F could've fit.

      @@GeminiTasiri Ah, yeah, that makes sense - I seem to recall hearing that the Fighting Fantasy game books were popular in Japan (complete with I think Puffin shipping Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson (the British Steve Jackson) to Japan to promote the line on at least one occasion?)

    Something pretty cool I noticed
    The walking frames, specifically down and up, only have the legs and arms move. What I think they did is draw the one walking pose, and then flip the bottom 4 tiles to give off the impression of walking. This reusage of tiles can be seen in the battle frames too, only the forward arm tile is changed when attacking, the walking pose just draws 2 tiles for the legs, etc
    Love old school tricks like that, so clever!

    My only complain is that you didn't mention that the game art was design to work in a CRT monitor. Using modern displays remove the extra detail that CRT gives. I would like to see that mentioned in the next videos.

    Oh, I thought the title was meant to be about for the FF series, not just FF1. The animation of FF seven or eight? (The one with Cloud Strife) convinced me to start playing the remade FF games. Damn it looks soooo good! Best stylized animation I've ever seen in a video game!

    RPGs that let you pick your own custom party of job classes and create all your own characters are honestly an underrated subgenre. They're obviously not for everyone, ya can't blame someone for wanting more *character* from their characters, but I feel that these blank slates can really spark the imagination.
    Maybe you base the characters on your family/friends, or your favorite characters from other media, or new original characters. Even if they're just names and simple 8-bit sprites on the screen, that story is now *your* story... as long as your imagination is willing to do some of the heavy lifting, of course.

  • @birdrun4246

    Does anyone know how the shaft of light animation at 13:25 works? Looks like some kind of transparency effect that should be well beyond the capabilities of the NES. I'm assuming it's using all the sprites to form the beam (hence the characters disappearing during the effect) and setting the priority flag to appear behind the tiles.

    something that people say a lot about old game protagonists, particularly silent protagonists, is that they're there to project personalities onto. i'm sure kids did quite a lot of that back in the day, and it's how i enjoyed my ff1 (gba) playthrough.

  • @keltzy

    It may be simple, but I still adore this game, more so than a lot of the later entries into the series, even. It may never be as good as a lot of the more character-driven stuff, but the lack of detail leaves a lot of room for imagination, so you wind up with the exact story and character personalities that suit you. A lot of the newer stuff loses me because, despite the gorgeous animation, I just can't connect with the characters they've given me.

    Thank you kindly Dan for the easily digestible information of my one of my favourite game series, I learned lots of great little trivia and gain new found appreciations for Final Fantasy I . The fond name for the NES , nostalgia box, was very endearing and thank you for the shout out recognition for spirit and pixel artist Shibuya Kazuko-san. Despite the limitation of the spirits, the key animation that Final Fantasy I had gave birth the very fun comic "8-bit theater"! Look forward to the next episode of New Frame Plus!

    Final Fantasy XIII characters:
    "According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Ooh, black and yellow! Let's shake it up a little. Barry! Breakfast is ready! Ooming! Hang on a second. Hello? - Barry? - Adam? - Oan you believe this is happening? - I can't. I'll pick you up. Looking sharp. Use the stairs. Your father paid good money for those. Sorry. I'm excited. Here's the graduate. We're very proud of you, son. A perfect report card, all B's. Very proud. Ma! I got a thing going here. - You got lint on your fuzz. - Ow! That's me! - Wave to us! We'll be in row 118,000. - Bye! Barry, I told you, stop flying in the house! - Hey, Adam. - Hey, Barry. - Is that fuzz gel? - A little. Special day, graduation. Never thought I'd make it. Three days grade school, three days high school. Those were awkward. Three days college. I'm glad I took a day and hitchhiked around the hive. You did come back different. - Hi, Barry. - Artie, growing a mustache? Looks good."

    "When we come back next time, we're talking about Final Fantasy 2."
    You mean 4? Or the actual 2 that took forever to come out in the West....I remember playing the GBA Final Fantasy 1 & 2 Dawn of Souls.... I think I beat 2 once...I beat 1 multiple times...and i could get NOWHERE in Dawn of Souls...because you were either grinding against things that gave so little EXP, or things that would kill your entire party in one hit until you got strong enough and good enough equipment to survive...
