Versus Strikezone: Darth Malak Vs. Darth Malgus (The Treacherous Butchers)

  • Darth Malak, the traitorous apprentice to Darth Revan, the scourge of the galaxy during the Jedi Civil War; and Darth Malgus, the Betrayer of the Empire, the harbinger of death during the Great Galactic War. Two powerful Sith Warriors, seperated by centuries, but inextricably linked by the roles they played in the schemes of the immortal Emperor Vitiate.
    If these two scourges of the Old Republic ever met on the battlefield, who would win?

    Malak is Malgus Lite.
    They each have similar Force powers, neither having much of an advantage in terms of "special moves".
    Malak is by no means unable to take a hit, but Malgus has been shown to tank far, far more damage and still keep coming. The same type of damage would flat out kill Malak.
    Malak's lightsaber skills are indeed superior to Malgus', but Malgus makes up for it with a stronger defense, as well as more overall combat field experience.
    In short, Malgus would have a fight on his hands, but the odds of him winning are stacked in his favor. If I had to quantify it, I'd say Malgus wins every 6 or 7 fights out of 10.

      More combat experience? Malak fought a war against the mandalorians followed by a Jedi civil war. Malgus has been in a few battles yeah he sacked the temple but that was hardly a solo effort

      Actually I’d argue that Malgus and Malak are far from comparable. A Fencer vs Brawler in all categories. Malak is a Jedi Guardian who is in the process of becoming a Sith Inquisitor, Malgus is a Sith Warrior through and through. Malak by far is the more powerful force user, if Malgus slips up and leaves himself open to Malak’s lightning Malgus would be FRIED. His force defenses are carrying him in the fight, Malak is a very complex and skilled swordsman but leaves himself open to counters. Although I do want to mention that NO ONE, has been shown defending Malak’s lightning with lightsabers. He usually just overpowers opponents with immense energy. Though I think Malgus wouldn’t be one shot, he is still fighting an opponent on the level of Emperor Palpatine. Malak is BETTER than Malgus in all areas excluding physicality, however a direct comparison between their overall performances lends Malgus an ever so slight advantage. If Malak didn’t sacrifice defense for offense and was more balanced in his blade work like Revan or Kao Sen Durach, Malgus would be completely outclassed. Malgus could contend but nothing more, in reality neither one is “the other”-lite as they are VERY different people and this matchup should have made that PAINFULLY clear.

    • @austinkersey2445
      @austinkersey2445 2 года назад +11

      I am mega-late, but Malak would win by a country mile. One, he's in his physical prime. Two, he is a more potent lightsaber duelist (Drew Karpyshyn, the lead writer for KOTOR stated Malak was a better duelist than Darth Revan) with a more layered and developed technique with Form II Makashi, Form IV Ataru, and Form VII Juyo to boot. Three, he is a more powerful Force wielder than Qui-Gon with more powers and more powerful abilities, as well as a greater willingness to use them. And four, he is a better strategist and tactician, as he basically stage-managed the duel between him, Revan, Bastila, and Carth on the Leviathan (similarly to Maul against Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan). Malak is a major threat on par with Council Masters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Shaak Ti, and Plo-Koon. Hell, he might even be a Tier 1.5 like Dooku or Exar Kun. If we're high-balling him. There is a reason that no one challenged him after Revan's death. Hell, while I would say he is just slightly below Revan overall, I think he is a definite overall superior to the villains of KOTOR II. Sion is over-reliant on his immortality, Nihilus has little besides Force Drain (moderately skilled in lightsaber combat and above-average telekinesis and lightning, butblittle else), and Kreia is too general purpose to defeat him in a fight on even ground. He's pretty damn scary.

Though that would require a lot of comparisons and contrasting between their abilities, skills, and other statistics and logistics to come to a decent answer. I think Malak is a better duelist, as he actually mastered his skillset, whereas Exar Kun used a nifty tool to make up for his lack of skill when compared to other fighters in his weight-class. But, I think Kun wins with Force abilities. It could go either way. I can honestly say. The only Force advantage I can definitively say Malak has is his telekinetic defenses and his ingenuity in his use of the Force when compared to Kun's more sledgehammer approach. On second thought, I think that match would be around 6/10 in Malak's favor.

    That's one of those fights that every Classic EU fan has thought about at some point. I really enjoyed this video and agree with the verdict, but there is some commentary I'd like to add.
    While Malgus is definately going to win if both fighters are dropped into battle cold, Malak is definately the greater strategist and politico. When Malak has the opportunity to plan ahead and strategize around his opponent's skill set and logistics he has utterly dominated combat. (With the exception of his last duel with Revan) Malgus, while by no means stupid, is still a bloodthirsty attack dog with a messiah complex. It is my personal belief that if Darth Malak were suddenly dropped into Malgus's era or vice versa that Malak would use his political knowledge, esoteric research, and power in the Force to quickly climb the ladder and surpass Malgus.
    It's likely, if not inevitable, that these two would eventually go at it. But Malak will have seen the writing on the wall and prepared for such a battle in advance, selecting a prepared battleground or taking down Malgus through political maneuvering.

    Darth Plagueis VS Emperor Valkorian/Vitiate
    Both have strangely similar backstories: bastard child, upper class father, low class mother, really messed up childhood, appointed by the ruling dark lord, solitary scholar, obsessed with immortality, etc. (all in spite of their major differences)
    Both also represent ancient and modern archetypes: the dark sorcerer/god king and the pragmatic schemer/mad scientist.

  • @TinyTorah
    @TinyTorah 7 лет назад +22

    Jensaarai, you make the argument that it was Malgus' cybernetics that allowed him to accomplish many of his feats of durability, but just shortly after his fight with Satele, in which he was severely injured, he wrecked a nameless (though by no means not powerful) Jedi and his apprentice, and during said fight was able to prevent several tons of rubble from crushing him, then exploded said several tons of rubble up and away from him... again, while severally injured. This would have been before needing his cybernetics by the way.
    You mistakenly paint Malgus as basically just a very efficient brute/brawler kind of fighter, when in False Emperor, the HoT, who was the best duelist of The Order at that time, claimed Malgus' form was flawless. In other words, you sell Malgus short; while he packs a punch, he's far more skilled than you make him out to be in your analysis.
    You're also incorrect about Vader being weak against lightning. In fact, he had built-in insulators that mitigated the effects of electricity to where his natural resistance to it would be above that of any average force-user.
    Your verdict however was good. XD

    • @TinyTorah
      @TinyTorah 7 лет назад

      Would you mind sourcing/quoting where it's stated that Malgus was eventually more or less reliant on his cybernetics?
      Thank you for clarifying what you meant on Malgus' skill as a fighter.
      Not exactly. In I think a new Vader comic, it shows Palpatine electrifying Vader with lightning (not his most powerful lightning obviously, but it was by no means not powerful (Sidious looked like he was putting some umph behind it)), and Vader takes it, and gets back up afterward, essentially uninjured.
      The Vader being weak to force lightning belief is just about as fallacious as the belief that orbalisk Bane is weak to lightning.

    • @corymccarty8603
      @corymccarty8603 5 лет назад +4

      Tiny Torah I have to disagree with you about Vader. Insulators dampened the effects of Force Lighting but he was still vulnerable to it. That WAS after all his ultimate undoing. When he cast aside the shroud of the DarkSide and became Anakin Skywalker again, throwing Palpatine down the shaft he took a torrent of Force Lighting that fried his life support system. That.might have been something he could overcome in the past due to him being on the DarkSide and allowing rage and the DarkSide to sustain him until he could get medical attention and repairs to his life support systems. As someone who had just cast off the shroud of the DarkSide Anakin Skywalker could no longer expect the DarkSide to sustain him and he succumbed to the injuries to his lungs he recieved so many years ago on Mustafar. Yes... Vader was indeed quite vulnerable to Force Lightning. The insulators just made him somewhat less vulnerable... he was still quite vulnerable. It was because of this that he didn't use Force Lighting himself. Doing so would harm himself by trying his life support systems.

      Darth Vader has:

      3. Been torched with a flamethrower
      4. Been buried alive
      5. Outweighed Maul's own dexterity, surviving an impalement of his own lightsaber through him and Maul, and while the latter croaked, Vader was still standing. Keep in mind, the first time Maul ever flinched was when he got cut in half.

    Jensaarai, you should watch into the badlands, not only is it a good show, but it has great visual references for Star Wars character; Quinn is Vader in his prime (his style shows precision, strength, and just enough ruthlessness), Sunny is Exar Kun (he is more than capable of defeating most opponents by conventional means, but when challenged he pulls out the truly unorthodox), the widow is non-tcw Ventress (a capable combatant who favors dual-wielding and shock and awe tactics), and there are other, less useful similarities of fighting style (the other baron shown is similar to Dooku, zephyr seems similar to darth talon, etc.).

Omg is this a brain scratcher. Maybe Greivous because mult blades is well optimized to deal with saberstaffs? idk about that one. Kun vs Dooku on the hand seems pretty simple. Kun's shock and awe would throw Dooku off and stomps in terms of force abilities.

    Malgus really is one of the most refined duelists in Star Wars. He supplements his duels with the force as if they were one and the same, rather than most force users who would use one or the other in most situations. Not to mention how many other skills he has to make him just that much more adaptable to any situation. He could compete with many Counsel level duelists, but capping out at the true masters of combat

    +Jensarrai1 Time for thoughts +critiques. This is an interesting matchup that Ive given thought to a couple of times and I'm glad that you did it. I used to think Malak would win because of his force abilities. He would just dance circles around Malgus, posses greater skill, slightly greater force power, and has more angels of attack to work with(like force whirwind, and force stun). I know that Malgus vs Zallow indicates that Malgus can deal with an offensive speed fencer like Malak, but I'm to sure how well that carriers over to Malak due to his greater level of skill, and variety of forms giving him more attack options to work with. The idea of Malgus been a "freestyle" fighter on the other hand is brilliant and I greatly like this idea. Given Malgus's sensibities, he's the type of guy who cares about learning the absolute basics techniques and then improving them through extensive live combat experience. A shining example of a combat pragmatist in Star Wars. He might be less technically skilled, but his experience makes it so his performance level puts him on par with the other great sword masters of his era. I do feel you sold Malgus's physical capabilities a tad short though. His cybernetics and muscular physic means he has a greater level of Output than Malak (albeit in a very diff way). Overall, this was a very solid video though I was enjoyed Greivous vs Anakin a lot more. Like always, great presentation, and delivery. As for some future matchups. Kyle Katarn vs Darth Vader, Liam the Padawan vs Emperor Vitiate, and Exar Kun vs Darth Krayt. Thank you so much for your work!

      Rob George It appears that, for once, we are in disagreement, mate.
      In a pure duel, I can agree that Malgus > Malak. Malak's style is more sophisticated and elaborate, Malgus' is more balanced and practical. Combined with his superior physicality, Malgus should win, though Malak would give him a hell of a fight, much better than Ven Zalow, thanks to his more varied skill set.
      Also, the whole argument about Malak's weak defense and durability is based around a single scan from a time period where Malak was years before his prime. And in terms of durability, he survived Demagol's experiments.
      I fail to see how Malak's Force abilities (mainly Force stun) would be simply shrugged off by Malgus. If Valentine Farfalla was able to put RoT Darth Bane in stasis, I don't understand how Malak, someone much more powerful than Farfalla, couldn't be at least as successful against Malgus, who is weaker than Bane. And the suggestion that Satele Shan is more powerful than Malak...
      So overall, I would still give Malak a small majority.

    • @robgeorge4581
      @robgeorge4581 7 лет назад

      +Maciek Cieply Actually we are not in as much as a disagreement as you would think. I used to say Malak, now I'm undecided. The dueling situation is whats got me confused. The comparison to Ven Zallow is a solid indication that Malgus can do just fine against offensive speed Fencers like Malak, but the 2 are very diff in skill sets. Malgus defends and powers through so I can see why you and Jensarrai are saying Malgus>Malak I'm just a tad hesitant about agreeing with it. The idea of Malak's weak def isn't totally unreasonable due to nature of Juyo itself and nearly all fights Ive seen him in, make him the aggressor hammering on a persons def. As for durability, wouldn't the survival of Demagol's experiments not = high durability but a very high pain threshold instead. Malak can def cope with injury well but it still takes him the same amount of dmg to injure him. As for force abilities, the idea of Malgus powering through Malak's force stun is a viable thing to say, but it would def stagger him and could open him or up, or serve as an excellent distraction tool. Need to check my fp chart to remember where I place Satele and Malak, I do remember that Satele>Malgus. Idk Jensarrai1's argument made me re-think my initial argument, and now I'm undecided.

    Malgus' style seems very similar to Qui Gon's (mostly) grounded form IV of heavy hits - every move he makes is a devastating strike. The only difference is his physical attacks are even more powerful. He also clearly has a form V defense and counter attack. And he expertly uses force attacks when he can although never subtly. You won't beat him by brawling or with cheap parlor tricks. I knew he would win this one before I hit play. I have to agree with your assessment entirely.

    • @DarthWill3

      I wouldn't say they were below Malgus' level. There were certainly challenging opponents in his time: Kao Cen Darach, Jedi Battlemaster; Satele Shan, who later became Grand Master of the Jedi Order; and Ven Zallow, a Jedi whom Malgus believed to have shared his views on improvement through combat.

Straight 1v1 duels with force users of or above his level would have been a relative rarity.

This video replaces the repeated information with fantastic transitions between the different comparison sections, and research has shown that 20 minutes is an excellent target time for videos. That is, people are more likely to watch 20 minute videos than longer videos in many cases. Anyway, great stuff!

  • @seanrea550

    unrelated and probably better with another video, but it seems to me that the lightsaber combat forms are not complete in them selves and that they build off each other in order. form one provides the basics and tunes one to the currents of the force. form two takes the fundamentals of form one and refines them in to more controlled and measured techniques using only the minimal action required. form three takes the prior two forms and forms a defensive measure to be applied with them. with these three you already have a complete yet simple form using the basics of form one applied through 2 and 3 in tandem. the remaining 4 forms build on them. form 4 sets a more dynamic style to work with the field for more complex battles. form 5 takes the basics of 2 and 3 and works in active counters. form 6 seeks to take all of the prior disciplines as one and work in non lightsaber elements like physical or force attacks. and form 7 seeks to complete the personal style by breaking with form restrictions and applying them as needed by a complete fighter. i find it strange that forms are taken in independently from each other and that the jedi or sith for that matter would not focus on learning all the forms rather than just select forms. rather there personnel styles exhibit the tendency's from select forms that fit their style best. if i were in charge of setting the training regimens of the jedi i would have the trainees learn them each in order up to 6 with form 7 being reserved for the advanced trainees who chose to focus on combat primarily.

    I feel as though taking Malak as Akaya leaving himself open to counterattack and repeating the same move over and over again is a bit of a reach. It’s an issue with turn-based games, and I imagine a more recently-depicted Malak would be far less passive. I know there’s very little material to consult with him, but I do feel that weakness was more made-up than genuinely evidenced.
    Even though we’re taking him as a Juyo specialist, that almost necessitates mastery over very other form, and I think it would be a disservice to Malak, as a war veteran against Mandalorians at a time when vibroblades could contend with lightsabers, and later against Jedi, to think he didn’t have a capable defence.
