Thank you, Los Angeles Public Library, and Suzanne, for sharing a great performance and more. Contrary to comments below, I think Suzanne's return to modular synthesis helps bridge a gap between generations, and turns a whole new audience on to modular synths and quad sound. No need for cynicism here. It's a small, small pond that modular synthesists swim in - there is no need to pee in it. It will always be a tiny corner of musical expression that is enjoyed by relatively few, and there is nothing wrong with that, nor giving adoration where it is due, no matter how "deep" your knowledge of an artist or their music goes. a 6-y/o girl or boy who happened to be at the library seeing this for the first time might get a spark of inspiration that could last a lifetime, and have no prior knowledge of Suzanne or her extensive library. Quadraphonic audio tracks can readily be upmixed for playback on 5.1 surround sound systems. Low frequencies from all four quadraphonic channels are combined for playback over the 5.1 subwoofer channel. The Q4 left-front and right-front tracks are mapped directly into 5.1 left-center-right channels and the Q4 right-rear and left-rear tracks are sent to the 5.1 surround channels. Such an upmix will preserve all directional sources in the original quadraphonic tracks.

I love Ciani's work! Btw, to anyone who has been to one of Ciani's live show, I have a question about the experience of the quadraphonic setup. I have been intrigued by the idea of spatial audio, but after some research, I realize there is a divide on whether such spatial music/speaker setup is enjoyable by the audience. For me, I am especially thinking about implementing a similar spatial sound system in my club/venue, in order to truly showcase quadraphonic sound. what do you think of it from your experience with hearing it live?
Haven't been to a show by Ciani, but I have some experiences with spatial audio. I think a quadraphonic setup would be fine in a venue. When having a spatial audio setup with a lot of different channels, that's when it all falls apart in a space like a concert venue or club. Those big systems are generally calculated for "3D" audio on a specific location, most probably the sound engineer's one. When I tried walking around to find the best sounding spot, I noticed the sound varies wildly from place to place, but none of the places I tried had a satisfactory sound. Not to say these systems cannot sound great, I just mean they are better suited for an audience sitting close together in a specific location. So the variation in sound based on position is definitely something to look out for.
I saw Suzanne Ciani last night at EartH in Hackney (London, UK) and was blown away! Truly amazing, mesmerising performance. She is so at one with the Buchla (not surprisingly as she was pretty much there with Don Buchla in the early days) and as Robaire Beckwith (in this thread) said, she is so unpretentious and not in anyway self indulgent - just incredibly skilful. The quad sound system worked really well I thought and is an integral part of her performance on the Buchla. I have experienced quad before, in the dance tent at Roskilde Festival in Denmark, back in the late 90's and it was awesome! So yeah, go for it. Also go and see a Suzanne Ciani performance, you'll be blown away!
Presumably the performance was mixed to 4 channels for the audience. Would that the 2 channels here had been matrix encoded so that those with home theatre equipment could hear that. It’s not is it? (I get the feeling from the way some sounds come and go that it might even just be the front 2 channels & we can’t hear what was being bounced to the rear channels)I know the official release was matrixed 4 channel.

Radiohead are mediocre at best. She'd wipe the floor with them!
AWESOME geek Trance music!!! ♪♫♪ she really needs a band! lol she can create some very pleasing sounds ☺♥♥♥
I've always enjoyed her work. Happy to see her still doing it. What I don't need is the dopey light show. I haven't dropped acid in 50 years, and I'm more likely to have a seizure than be "turned on" by this! Thankfully I can just listen.
sounds like you should try it again ;)
Headphones and some shut eye baby
team her up with Fripp and Eno
Does somebody know the name of the book? (written by the interviewer)
