Thanks! Exactly the issues I was looking for an answer to. Made my mind up to which controller to get. Shame O3 and O4 transmission types are incompatible 😢
Both controllers are great the 1 advantage i like with the rm330 is pan and zooming at the same time while the rcn1 is much more versatile for certain circumstances
I just returned the RC after two days. The signal strength is weaker than the N1. I’ve found a way to keep my iPhone highest brightness level on for a long time.
The only thing I can add is that your mobile needs to be fully charged when used with the N1 - the phone battery does seem to drain faster than 'normal' phone use
@@GAVINHR What??? I didn't know that. The whole reason for the RC for me was the fact that I'm contemplating buying a drone. Since I'm a complete newbie my idea was to get a mini with a RC to practice and later eventually buy a bigger one like the Mavic 3 Classic. Now, after watching your video I'm left with this conundrum. Do the whole starter drone ==> advanced drone thing just to avoid crashing a brand new expensive drone or just go ahead with the Mavic 3 classic. For comparison; the mini 3 or mini3 pro would be the starter drone. Prices are between €350-€499 (depending on the controller of choice). The mavic 3 classic (including RC-N1) is currently on sale for €895. Would love to hear your opinion.
@@HarryOsirian in a weird way, the more expensive the drone the less likely you are to crash it, the bigger ones like the mavic 3 have film obstacle avoidance, take DJI care refresh and you’re covered, just seen your other comment, for me the rc-n1 /N2 is the better option all round most people have high end phones which are much more powerful than these controllers. The external antennas of the RC2 was just for visual affect, the real issue with the mini 3 pro range (RC) was the antenna placement in the drone. I’d also not buy the mavic 3 classic, get the Air 3 or 3S 👍
@@GAVINHR Hey Gavin, thanks for your response! I understand that more expensive drones have more features to prevent crashes, which is definitely important for a beginner like me. The larger drones seem to have all the sensors I need, and I like the idea of turning them off once I'm more confident with flying. Some people suggested starting with a smaller drone to practice, but I'm not sure if that's the best option, as it would mean additional costs and having to manage two drones. I'm considering getting a bigger drone with DJI Care refresh for extra security. I checked out the Air3 / 3S models, but I'm not a fan of the fixed aperture. Having to buy and use ND filters seems like an extra hassle. The DJI Air 3 with DJI RC-N2 controller is priced at €879, while the Air 3S with DJI RC-N3 controller is €1099. The Mavic 3 Classic is €895. What do you think about these options? You seem to prefer the Air3 or Air3S. Any indications as to why? Is it the zoom lens or other features? Do you have any other suggestions or advice for me?
Hi there long time no see! Sadly it’s not possible to do that test reliably and fairly, ami did write this in another comment but when the drone acquires the sat lock they are cached on the drone therefore if you switch battery or turn the drone off you will see you get sat lock straight away, for example on this test I did the RC first, it got a full sat lock and updated home point message even indoors. However when I repeated it with the RCN1 moments later if you look at the still it already had sat lock because it had already saved them in short to test it fairly they would have to be done in different locations with time between so any results wouldn’t be representative.
haha! good man, Gavin! You have challenged an over-arching opinion! A choice between controllers still has many sides to it... I'm an N1 man myself and I'm anyways clove to, using it with both the M2 and M3, a tablet, and Litchi. Not quick but then "haste" maybe shouldn't be common a requisite with aircraft anyways?
Thank you, exactly my point, I simply cannot understand those that claim that the RC controller is quicker - like in any stretch! obviously this video was just to basically prove a point that surely the benefits of live maps, updates, and all the rest surely outway the tiny amount of effort it takes to open a phone holder and plug a cable in? I often like to challenge the narrative just to give a different perspective than the usual fan boys that tell you everything is brilliant. Totally agree, this should be a careful operation and haste has no place really! I appreciate your comment and watching!
I was going to go with the RC2 controller. But I think using the other controller with my phone is going to be a lot better. My phone is A LOT more powerful, has a better screen then the RC2 controller.
While this test shows te RC-N1 is faster to the camera on, can you do a real life test of actually getting the drone to take off? My RC-N1 with an Androind phone takes longer than 16s to get into the air, maybe because i wait for good sat count before flying.
Unfortunately that is a nearly impossible test to do fairly - here’s why, each time the drone establishes its gps location in a new area it will take some time to establish the satellite’s however when you switch controller the location is still stored on the drone which is why the sat lock will come quickly if you power things down and restart. This is why if you look closely to r rcn1 controller already had full sats straight away
Similar test on you tube but Mini3 Pro vs Mini2, looks like Mni 3 connection via phone is quicker then the 2. But in an ideal world with the RC its press on off it goes with the N1 its not always that smooth in fact not! more than often, i.e. drop the phone, cable doesn't connect to the phone correctly, the app doesn't launch. In my view the RC is a more reliable quick setup.
I have both. And actually want both for different reasons. 15 sec, even a minute, is not enough of a difference for me to say one is better. But a nice try and a good comparison.
This is such a basic concept of a video but I'm glad you actually did it Everyone always said "DJI RC is a faster set up" well this video proves them wrong. rc n1 all the way
It only took me 10 months or so to make this. I have no idea why people think it’s a faster set up, I’m not knocking the controller it’s a good bit of kit but it takes a while to boot up and as shown is placing a phone in s holder and plugging in a simple cable that much of a chore for all the benefits it brings? Most modern mobile phones cost 1000+ they are superior in every way to a £255 android controller
@@GAVINHR people are lazy as all hell... everyone carries a phone and many have brighter screens and better nits and custom software and all that jazz 100%with you man its great to see how quick RC N1 really is
Good job as always Gav. Myself I have both of course and I tend to like the N1 better with my phone or I-Pad. With the DJI RC I must have that shade on first of all. With the other not so much. Time to get to flying really doesn't matter to me because I first go up and orbit to get my camera setting right with what filter and etc. Takes time. Also Gav I've got 2 Dial filters (1-5 and 6 - 9) which cuts down on changing filter time. Some time I just use the regular filters. So you see I have things to do first. I know you understand this. Thank you as always for being here for us
Of course ! And thank you for the detailed reply ! Getting up in the air isn’t the most important thing but it’s more those that say the RC is more convenient and faster - but from my experience as people carry a phone with them anyway it just makes sense to use the N1
I was thinking about getting RC controller, but after watching your video I am gona buy RCN1 and use that money to get 2TB ssd instead. Thanks for the video!!!!!
Nice comparison, thanks for doing this Gavin. I like using both: the RC for vid/photos in a compact package and the RC-N1 for geospatial modelling and using third-party apps such as DroneLink. One add-on comment/question would also be how quickly they each lock onto satellites? Might be worth doing a quick outdoor side-by-side comparison to see if there are any diferences in the flying field. Keep it up and keep em coming!
I have the Mavic 3 with the RC N1 and the Tripltek 8 pro. I love the larger brighter screen and not ready to jump into the new RC's. Thanks for the comparison!
Phone moisture issues on port. Screen glare going dark randomly Getting pop ups and calls sometimes Lesser radio strength Are some of the issues i experienced. Practicality of the screen is better… But i have both.. use what you got to earn some $ to get the other one.
RC N1 everytime for me, use it with a quality phone that has a high screen rating in nits and it is far better display than the RC which just isn't bright enough if you ask me.
Interesting and nice video. Really thank you. But the truth is, that one of my friends, had a difficult situation with the standard controller. As he was flying, the application crashed with no reason. Fortunately the drone did not go very far and reconnected. But a lot of capture unique moments, never taken. So i would not like, to be dependent on an application. Personally, for that reason alone, I prefer RC.
Hey that’s absolutely fine ! Nothing wrong with the RC it’s still a great piece of kit, it has itself been known to crash when it first launched just like the DJI fly app did on a phone a year or so ago but right now I have to say both seem to work well
I prefer the DJI RC over the DJI RC N1, 13 seconds longer is not significant to me, what I like is the convenience of just pressing a button rather than having to plug in a phone, and while flying our phones are free to use for other things, in my opinion it's not a matter of which one faster, whichever should be easier to use.
In a real life situation or action situation where your climbing a mountain , riding a bike or on a hike etc it would actually be alot fasted as you'd have to locate both phone and controller then assemble both on the move without an ideal surface to place them on , cause let's be honest , nobody is flying a drone from their kitchen table or office desk
I've got both but the RC is better for me as my phone is very poor for how bright I can get the screen. So have problems seeing it on a bright sunny day.
I think mobile phones are faster due to their hardware inside, cpu, ram etc Rc Pro can't compare in that regard.. Pulling that phone holder/antenna out and plugging it in really isn't a big deal, nor does it take long.
new rc is faster as you press on then unfold drone gimbal cover off its then ready you cant unfold the drone and fiddle with cables and phones at same time ,however theres not much difference over all but the new controller is worth the extra for clarity and extra dial and function buttons if you can stretch to it get it .
Lets end the argument now. The RC-N1 has one major drawback, DJI has a list of phones that are compatible with the controller. My Pixel 6 Pro was on it when I got the drone and controller. That changed this month and one day I had could fly and the next day I had a white screen. The list now has only one Pixel phone and that is the Pixel 8 Pro. A new (used) DJI RC is enroute.
Even then, most people have a mobile phone with them anyway don’t they? I mean I’ll always support my viewers choice on controller and provide support but I agree with the fact using a phone is better in pretty much every way
This comparison worth hitting like button. Thanks for this much needed info.
Thank you kindly
This was just the video I needed to dissuade me from second-guessing my RCN1 purchase and returning or selling it for the screen one. Cheers!

Is the RC screen controller durable? Is a screen protector needed? Thanks.
I’m quite careful with my equipment and never really dropped it to be able to test the theory but it’s pretty solid, I do have a screen protector on mine yep just to be safe. Skyreat do one cheap enough :)
in case the RC screen does not work, can I still connect the RC to my phone ?
One of the other things to mention , instead of using a mobile phone I prefer to use a 12 inch tablet with a Sim card in it, gives you the same functionality as the mobile phone but with a much larger screen, you also benefit with no system lag like you do with a smart controller .... 👍👍
Indeed using a tablet is also a great option !
I honestly believe they used the cheapest Chipset for the first RC that's why its so damn slow
I have the RC-n1, and don’t have any problems tbh. The only reason why I would get the other one is I can fly the drone further away and it stays connected
There is no difference in signal strength between the two controllers?
I thought there was@@GAVINHR
hi I would just like some advice about my dji mavic mini 1 the camera gimble keeps shaking and gimble wheel does not work so can't do videos or pictures. Could you know the reason please. Paul
Hi there that does seem a bit odd, I would place it on the ground and complete an imu and gimbal calibration and see if thah works
Try to tap it gently. It works with other mini drones with the same problem.
Hi again I tried what you suggested about calibrate imu on my mavi mini. It did not work. When you put the drone to your ear you can here like a rumbling sound have you ever herd anyone say this before. Really buging me . Thanks Paul.
Do we need wi-fi to use the rc-n1 qirh the phone?
Can the remote with the screen connect to my phone wifi to get latest map details, firmware updates and use third party apps?
You can hotspot the rc to get live maps and updates yes 👍
How do they compare in flight distance?
is the smart controller compatible with mavic mini 1st generation ?
Thank you! Helped me as well!
As I do not have a smart phone then it is a no brainer which controller I chose,
Indeed!
How to take vertical shoot with old rc remote controller
I use the RC-N1 with an ipod mini
Thanks for creating and sharing! Exactly the answer I was looking for.
All the best to you.
Dan
what he said :)
The only thing I can add is that your mobile needs to be fully charged when used with the N1 - the phone battery does seem to drain faster than 'normal' phone use
The rc-n1 can charge your phone so it will actually gain power :)
@@GAVINHR Oh I wish I knew this last week!
Ive downloaded the dji fly app for my ipad mini, do you think the screen will work just fine?
Interesting,. Good one mate!
I would love to see the same test with home point updated as the finish
My phone is A LOT more powerful, has a better screen then the RC2 controller.
bonus: you can install 3rd party apps on your phone. Something which you can not do with the RC version.
Can i use rc n1 controller with dji mini 2 and mini 3 pro ???
Sure can.
@@GAVINHR thank u
But I don't really know if I like it so I will probably stick to the n-1 controller.
Lovely job. Thanks for that
While this test shows te RC-N1 is faster to the camera on, can you do a real life test of actually getting the drone to take off? My RC-N1 with an Androind phone takes longer than 16s to get into the air, maybe because i wait for good sat count before flying.
Unfortunately that is a nearly impossible test to do fairly - here’s why, each time the drone establishes its gps location in a new area it will take some time to establish the satellite’s however when you switch controller the location is still stored on the drone which is why the sat lock will come quickly if you power things down and restart. This is why if you look closely to r rcn1 controller already had full sats straight away
@@GAVINHR Ah i didn't know that, thanks for pointing it out 👍👍
Haha i love the clock on your hand, very appropriate lol
Hi, does it work for DJI mini 2 se?
i read that it does not work with the mini se 2.
Yeah that’s a fair comment :) the DJI app and seems much better than it used to be I have to say
I was dead set on getting the remote with the screen.
You sir just ruined that😂
I have both. And actually want both for different reasons. 15 sec, even a minute, is not enough of a difference for me to say one is better. But a nice try and a good comparison.
This is such a basic concept of a video but I'm glad you actually did it
Everyone always said "DJI RC is a faster set up" well this video proves them wrong. rc n1 all the way
It only took me 10 months or so to make this.
@@GAVINHR people are lazy as all hell... everyone carries a phone and many have brighter screens and better nits and custom software and all that jazz
100%with you man its great to see how quick RC N1 really is
Good job as always Gav.
Don’t you just love an expert?
I was thinking about getting RC controller, but after watching your video I am gona buy RCN1 and use that money to get 2TB ssd instead. Thanks for the video!!!!!
You’re welcome!
Ha ha i bet a few folk were surprised by that mate good stuff.
I bet they were also mate!
Screen glare going dark randomly
Getting pop ups and calls sometimes
Lesser radio strength
Are some of the issues i experienced.
Practicality of the screen is better…
But i have both.. use what you got to earn some $ to get the other one.
Great video that helped me decide. Fast and informative video. Thank you.
That was a suprise. Great video :)
Thank you!
Welcome!
Very informative, I appreciate this comparison, thanks!
Make a video RC2 vs RCN2 which is faster 😄
Haha yes!
Incredible results
Thanks mate. I just saved some money with your video
I've got both but the RC is better for me as my phone is very poor for how bright I can get the screen. So have problems seeing it on a bright sunny day.
Me too, and my phone overheats and gets worse (100 degree day), the RC didn't fade like that, I could see fine.
Just remember that is an iPhone issue specifically and a lot of users this won’t be an issue
Thanks , it saved me some money!
You’re welcome !
For me, N1 is better for several reasons. Larger screen (with my phone), hands not in the way, map updates.
I think mobile phones are faster due to their hardware inside, cpu, ram etc Rc Pro can't compare in that regard.. Pulling that phone holder/antenna out and plugging it in really isn't a big deal, nor does it take long.
Exactly 🙂 that’s my entire point
Thank you
new rc is faster as you press on then unfold drone gimbal cover off its then ready you cant unfold the drone and fiddle with cables and phones at same time ,however theres not much difference over all but the new controller is worth the extra for clarity and extra dial and function buttons if you can stretch to it get it .
Thankyou...
thank you!
I love the background suits the video well 😏
Lets end the argument now.
The DJI-RC only has 1 advantage... it's Convenient!! Period.! Everything else falls short.
Even then, most people have a mobile phone with them anyway don’t they? I mean I’ll always support my viewers choice on controller and provide support but I agree with the fact using a phone is better in pretty much every way
