I see people squirrel hunting quite a bit in certain public areas around my neck of the woods and always have a hard time. I feel it’s because they are always grouped up, talking/ lots of noise, and they just keep moving. My grandfather taught me to find some oak trees, sit down and don’t make a noise. After a while the squirrels will come out and if your around oaks that are falling acorns(especially white oaks), there will be tons of squirrels 🐿. It’s all about finding their homes and food sources, then staying still and making no noise. Most people I see are loud and always moving. Same for deer, find the beds, sit still and make no noise.
Squirrel hunting does definitely make you a better hunter. Also: When you are in the tree stand deer hunting, keep your eye on squirrels. They can hear far better than you can and will alert you to approaching deer.
Iv been preaching this for years to my hunting partners. Everyone says those exact same things. They don’t understand how good it is for all aspects of hunting. It hones all your skills, it’s hell of a good time, and they are damn good eating! Cheers from a Canadian squirrel hunter 🍻🇨🇦👍🏻
So was I, and it was more of an insult to come home empty handed because a head shot on a squirrel is not the best way to kill them. Best way to miss them. And must not have been poor enough to have been taught that the rib meat is the only place to shoot them. Because you ain’t makin no squirrel head stew with shot up heads. Squirrel ribs always been dog feed never waste a head. A lot of good fat in a brain.
I have hunted my whole life. Learned how to hunt by hunting squirrels, taught my son how to hunt same way, its a great intoduction to hunting, learning to traverse and navigate the woods, helps create healthy and successful methods of hunting. I will be a hunter until the day i die and squirrel hunting will always be a part of that and if i am lucky enough one day to have grandchildren i will take them hunting!
And do it with a .22. I’ve done a lot of targets shooting, but sitting at a bench shooting paper doesn’t fully prepare you for taking an accurate shot on an animal when adrenaline hits. My dad and I went three weekends in a row, and we missed several. By the third outing, I fired seven shots and only missed two. Hunting squirrels with a rifle will make you not just a better hunter, but a better shooter under stress. It’s especially wild when the leaves are still on in the summer.
I've hunted many deer and bird leases all over the state of Texas meeting many people. Getting asked many times what's my favorite animal to hunt or my most memorable hunts. Replying with squirrel hunting or things/animals encountered while squirrel hunting. Sharing stories and to what I believe is most captivating about squirrel hunting. Ive had a many a young guy scoff and give the same old debates. Comparing City squirrels to wild squirrels as if squirrel hunting is just target practice and not much to it. All the while having older guys join in and share many old story of their favorite squirrel woods. Squirrel hunting use to be a time honored tradition! I've spent a many of opening day of deer season chasing cat squirrels though old growth bottoms full of hickory nuts and water oaks. Stumbling into massive bucks, flushing snipe or woodcock near soggy pools, watching 100s of migrate ducks flood the timber at daylight after a front has passed! Learning to slip through the woods toe to heel, honing skills through trial and error, using ALL your scenes comparable to no other animal pursuit! For me squirrel hunting is the most thrilling yet peaceful pursuit. Bringing the hunter very close and in tune with the "wild" and a very primitive hunter vs prey experience.
my first deer encounters were squirrel hunting with my dad when I was 6. Our hunting dog died so dad had to find the squirrels and all I did was gather them up. and of course as we were sneaking around we came up on two majestic looking bucks. looking back, probably 2yr olds but they looked booners in the moment
Just from hunting squirrels alone, your eyes will become more accurate and sensitive to small movements. Discerning between just the wind moving a branch or a squirrel.
Just left Arkansas hunting bushy tails…much harder than people think, they are smart, quick, and small. Disappear quick and if you’re not careful you’ll follow it down a tree and put other hunters in danger. Not easy at all!
I leave the squirrels alone and I will tell you why. They do not bark at me on my way to my stand. I sit in my tree and when I hear them bark I know a deer, or coyote or something else is near by.
Not always some times they bark at each other but what he is say is a very good point to how many ppl do you no that can get a limit squirrel just about every time
Well setting at a good tree with acorns will help you improve on hunting squirrel but if you don't listen to how the squirrels talk to each other or the way they throw there tells back and forth all I'm saying is learning behavior of the animal before you it will improve you to being a better Hunter
@@mrglock2313same, it’s actually easy. Most people can’t sit still and be quiet these days. If any white oaks are falling tons of acorns, there will be way more than a limit around.
@DDHONLINE pressured squirrel area, be prepared to leave the woods with empty handed if you don't know what your doing. THEY ARE TOUGH HUNTING FOR SURE!
And if anyone doesn't want to be wasteful I grew up in a middle income house hold and my father brought back a clean roadkilled squirrel and we all ate it and it was way better than it should have been
I have to respectfully disagree. Although I think squirrels are a great way to improve as a hunter. 😂 I have to say, “IMHO” for myself and multiple friends and acquaintances of all ages and backgrounds. Trapping is unequivocally the best/fastest way for a bow hunter to level up. It makes you reevaluate everything you thought you knew. And re-think most everything, i.e.-scout,setup,hunt,recovery,etc. . With no negative side effects that I’m aware of. Certainly less intimidating if your blessed with a successful trapper to follow around. But easily obtainable to anyone with enuf “want to” and maybe a few how to vids. Again just IMO. 😂
I disagree, I can’t tell you how many I could have taken by just sitting in my deer stand. Patience and being quiet and still are key to getting any game animal.
Damn I’m not allowed to eat squirrel (religious purposes), so I’ve never went out and squirrel hunted cuz what’s the point if I can’t eat it. But if it’s gonna make me a better deer hunter I’m for sure gonna do it and just donate the meat
The most tedious and sneaky hunting you can do is squirrel hunting. If you can become a good squirrel hunter you can hunt just abt anything.

100% agree, you learn to be a better shot, more quiet, pay attention to your surroundings, identify trees and more.
Love me some eastern Kentucky squirrel hunting ,you learn how to stalk and good trigger control, aim for the eyeball only.
No reason to take head shots on a squirrel other than preference. They die just fine with a vital shot.
@ZeddicusTheMage I was raised poor and it was a serious insult to bring in damaged meat from a poorly made shot..

Yep alot of fat on the brain. It was always a skill game to test one's accuracy, I never failed to limit out with all head shots.
By far the best way to learn. Nobody can do it anymore and they are everywhere
Helps with buck fever too. In my experience, small game in general helps with buck fever.

As a small kid I'll bet you I shot 40 22 rounds before got my first squirrel
As someone starting hunting at 28, I’m on about round 25 or so. So hopefully I’m be bagging one before spring season ends Saturday 😂
I agree wholeheartedly
Alot of time I would rather hunt squirrels. I find it peacefull

The easiest way to see squirrel is to go deer hunting. And vise versus.
Exactly 😂, I've taken a pellet gun out bow hunting with me just incase I decide I'm squirrel hunting now 😅

Rabbit hunting hands down

Don't really have squirrels around me. Spend my childhood shooting gophers though.
