Frequency separation uses an inverse blur to achieve the appearance of sharpening, ( gaussian, bilateral (which is the best), median). I have been using a macro i created that uses inverted bilateral blur for years. This work better than the high pass that just looks at high frequency components ( edges are a facet of high frequency). High pass can soften edges, however, the algorithm for bilateral blur preserves edges so the appearance of sharpening is more evident.

That's interesting. How would I replicate your macro in AP? Thanks!

Thanks Mate; another interesting video that I will certainly be trying .
I use the Unsharp Mask but only with the Radius slider . Factor is at default setting .
My start up Macro has radius 100% and Opacity 50% so it's easy to decrease or increase the effect , or mask in/out as you suggested
But have never tried blend modes .
Personally; I feel sharpening and noise reduction is a little over worried about by too many .

Great tip! Is there any way to take this technique further by only affecting the highlights, mid-tones, or shadows specifically? I am new to Affinity Photo and am trying to see if it is possible to create something like the "Dynamic Contrast" filter found in On1 Photo Raw. It also lets you add the micro contrast to just small, medium, or large edges as well. I sure there is a way to select only the, say, highlights and apply the contrast to it...I just don't know how yet!

You can apply it separately to each value and target it with the help of blend ranges, luminosity mask or tonal range selections.

Hi Olivio. What screen recording software do you use. I am looking for one to use for my future videos. Loving all your tutorials by the way. There are so many amazing features on Affinity you are highlighting, I have a job to keep up with them all, LOL. 😂

Just get OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). Everyone uses it, Olivio too (you can actually see the icon on the bar at the bottom)
