  • This is the Hospital de Sant Pau (also known as Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau) located in the neighborhood of El Guinardo Barcelona, Catalonia Spain. Hospital de Sant Paul is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered one of the most gorgeous modernist buildings in Barcelona.
This hospital was formed at the beginning of the 1400's due to a financial strain on the city's hospital funds. It was a combination of 6 hospitals, that were all founded or funded by mostly religious orders or persons... with most of the funding coming from donations. The decision to stop using the previous 6 hospitals and create a new site for a new hospital was finalized by Pope Benedict the 13th. The original hospital stood for 500 years before the need to construct a new hospital became dyre. In 1896 Pau Gil I Serra, a wealthy banker died with his will stating that his estate be donated to build a new hospital in Barcelona. This was Hospital de Sant Pau. There was an agreement between Hospital de la Santa Creu and the will of PAul Gil I Serra that made this vision possible.
The project was originally headed by Domenech I Montaner, a great architect who focused on the beauty of modern hospitals across Europe, originally planned for 48 buildings. Each building was build to focus on something different. It had natural lighting, the courtyard styling gave good ventilation, it was truly a model hospital. When the original architect died, his son, Pere Domenech I Roura finalized his father's work and it was opened as Hospital de la Santa Creu I Sant Paul in 1930.

Do you think this is worth 17 euros? Most of pavilions seem to be closed.

I would go there if you love taking pictures of the architectural styles of the buildings but it is true they were renovating a lot when I was there. This was filmed in May of 2023 so hopefully, they finished most of it.
